It is based solely on how your skin (and to a lesser extent hair and eyes) react to proximity with different wavelengths of light, aka colours. I know that some people are left in doubt after their draping if they did not have a competent analyst but if you are draped by a true pro you will NEVER need another colour system and you will never be typed in any other season by any other pro either. This is an excellent. The only thing I don't completely agree is with bordeau outfits and velvet clothes in deep color. I think for SOME women with high contrast coloring (such as deep autumns and deep winters) it can look amazing for a bolder look when they really want to make a statement. It's still a strong look but for these specific women it can make them look incredible on certain occasions. For everyone else it's definitely a no though, specially for women with low contrast or very light coloring
I agree with you. High contrast works amazing with this. It doesn’t bring to life though, it doesn’t age either. It looks almost natural, because high contrast coloring is so vibrant.
I also agree with you. I am deep winter and Bordeaux red is one of the most beautiful color on me. Mij whole complexion is glowing/ a life, when I wear a Bordeaux red scarf or hat. It's complements mij natural colors.
I don't know if you've already heard of her, but I strongly recommend Lisa Eldridge. She's a fantastic make-up artist with a really natural looking approach to makeup.
Your example at 18:00 is quite interesting, because Zooey Deschanel (bottom left) is actually a natural blonde but never felt like herself in the color, and with your description you can really see why! So interesting to see how sometimes people's natural coloring is not necessarily the most flattering🤔I feel like that's usually the exception though, but maybe I'm wrong about that
Based on her sister, I'm going to guess that she has very ashy blonde hair naturally, which would mean she would look less good in that very warm golden brassy blonde. I'm guessing the blonde picture is not her natural color.
I learned to switch up from dewy foundation to Matte and it’s changed the game for me, I don’t have sharp features and i would always look so sweaty. Wish this video had come sooner for me 😭
I just want to say that after watching Aly's channel for a couple years, I now get compliments on my style all the time.....I have realized that I am a soft dramatic and should quite trying to dress like a romantic or gamine. Once I embraced my bolder lines and essence, adding contrast to my look, I feel so much more confident in my style
I never knew how to articulate when trying to fix someone's makeup what was making it look puffy or swollen, especially trying to keep the center face matte, THANK YOU!
Lol my favorite palette is the Modern Renaissance, which is a bunch of wine reds. The other day I went to work with only my shadow done (no mascara or concealer) and my coworker immediately said "wow you look tired!" Lolol
The highlights one is so true. I got expensive highlights and looked so sick and tired. I dyed my hair jet black and my features and brown eyes especially now shine. Thank you Aly
Are you a winter too? I am looking to go back to my natural very dark brown (or I may take the plunge and go black) from my current ginger hair. It has aged me, all the red on my skin is showing and I look pale, rather than “porcelain “. May I ask if you went for a blue-black or a faded type of black?
Hi! I’m theatrical romantic and deep winter. My skin is fair too and my natural hair color is dark brown. I went with a “soft black” shade because I don’t want to wear heavy makeup to make unnatural blue black work. (Also dye your eyebrows to match and you’ll only need mascara to look your best!)
@@Staci.Gonzalez I’m a TR too! That’s a common combination it seems, and the best one too! Ok, I’ll do that! Did you go to a salon? I was planning on doing it at home, which I’ve done many times before.
TR and winter are the best lol! After a $300 disaster, I did my hair myself, but I don’t know too much about hair coloring. Definitely do your research since you're covering up ginger/warm undertones. The black I used (garnier olia 2.0 soft black) had a green tint which nicely neutralized the red/orange highlights. Going from the least flattering color (warm&light), to the best hair color for TR/DW (cool&dark) brought back my confidence instantly. I wish you good luck!!!
I was surprised to see velvet on the list. I can see how that could be true for most people, but some women look very lifted and at-home in rich, dark fabrics! ~like a winter-colored Kibbe Soft Dramatic! :)
Some things just depends on the type of person. For example I feel like a queen in Bordeaux and velvet. I love it so much. Even without make up. Although I know people who absolutely cannot wear it. 😁
Thank you Aly. Now I understand why these very light, matte and shimmery eyshadows never works for me! I stopped using all eyeshadow because I don't like what happens (my eyes look dry, tired and very aged and my upper eyelid skin suddenly looks very old and wrinkly(by at least +15 yrs! 😭) when I apply any eye shadow after I reached the age of 43, even when putting a wing to try to create lift. Wearing almost no make-up now, because makeup makes me look old and tired, accentuating every single sign of ageing, ageing me by at least +15yrs when I apply makeup. My natural moisturiser skin condition is very good, so now I look better With only soft eyeliner with a lifting wing and properly heavier applied mascara in lifting awake technique like you explained in another video. Why is foundation and eyeshadow so accentuating ageing? Please point to your video about very awake fresh looking daytime minimalist make up for older women (age 45-55) with very light cool skin tone and blonde hair. Thank you for all the years of awesome advice!
The honey tone was done on someone I recently and she looks sooo nice, better than when she was brunette. The “brassy” tones can be sooo pretty sometimes
I really think it depends on your complexion. Also the colour you had when you were a child may play a role. Those who were honey blonde in childhood may be able to pull off a brassy, caramel colour later if they're not high contrast
Omg you knocked me out right away on the first point. This is my go to shadow color and I always put it on carelessly w my finger lol! I think it looks good on me but I also think I might subconsciously be trying to look a little dead/tired on the outside because I kinda feel that way on the inside smh
Time for some experimentation with your technique and look and hopefully it works the other way around, you look great...and it gives you a little lift. Hope things get better.
I have been there before, and you are right, life can be really hard at times. I have figured out that if I am feeling like this, and I take a little bit of time to care for myself (to do something kind for myself that helps to rejuvenate me and that brings me joy) then that really helps! ❤ I hope you will do that for yourself too...you are worth caring about!!
Do you have high contrast, olive skin? I do, and I find that red on my “green” skin is lovely, and purple pulls out the coloring in my eyes. I don’t think this advice fits all shades- it’s like just its own weird thing that probably applies to many- enough to be a thing. Could be that it does look good on you, so you do you!!!
I love the idea of this video, but I think anything to do with color (for example, bordeaux eyeshadow or warm blonde hair) depends on the complexion/hair/eyes of the individual. It's impossible to make blanket statements about color, as one color will make some people glow and other people look dull, ill, or tired.
Same for me. Like her examples for the eyeshadow placement on the lower outer V. Most of the ladies have droopy downturned eyes to begin with. And Debbie Harry certainly does not fit Aly's description at all! The look with the drapping of her purple blush makes her look fresh imo. It's iconic. So Idk where this comes from. For me personally grungy greens, muddy beiges and warm yellows make me look unwell. But there are so many people that look extra suave and chic in them. It just doesn't make sense to give out universal rules on colors that will fit everybody. It doesn't work that way.
Sheesh. Trends really interfere with finding the particular styles that work for you. We feel like we have to wear what's trendy to be stylish and fit in, when no trend will work for everyone (and some trends work for almost no one).
plus trends usually wear off pretty quickly. I learned way to late that you should dress for the body that you have and not for the body that you want (=find out what suits YOU and don't follow trends because they usually don't even work for you and they always end and you'd have to run after the next one). same goes for your hair. if you got fine straight hair I'm sorry but L'oreal just will not give you a lion's mane.
High quality content, put together with with intelligence and taste. Professional stylists could learn from you, Aly. Carry on for all of the womankind!😊👍
Thanks for touching on the eyebrows. Sometimes I have a hard time listening to woman who have those eyebrows or the "hook" eyebrows because I am mentally fixing them the whole time
I disagree about the velvet fabric and the burgundy color.. it depends on the style of the dress or the outfit, i mean velvet has been in style since ages for a reason, it gives that classic timeless look and has nothing to do with tiredness. It actually makes anyone who wears it look more preppy and elegant. The burgundy color as well, depends on the skin tone, some colors complement skin tones more than others so it’s really not a general rule to avoid it
This made me think a lot. I'm a romantic with oily dehydrated skin and because of the video of makeup for romantics I started to use less matte base like tinted sunscreen or base in general, but my skin is puffy and nothing tight and I always noticed how saggy can make me look this shine in incorrect places like in all the face. Now I think that something more suitable for my face it's a matte one but not too thick and cakey
You're so right about the brow starting line. I have furrows between my brows . much more flattering to make sure the brow line starts nearer to the number 1 diagram point . Great tips as usual , especially for us more mature ladies.
Your advice years ago about making your eyes bigger with makeup changed the way I look at makeup. You are an artist with good eye and great understanding of visuals. Thank you so much for your continued tips! Love from Finland xxx
also very bleached/white hair color can make you age a lot if you have slight aging skin, if the skin is not tight the white bleached hair will accentuate all signs of age
Thank you for this video. I discovered Kibbe from you a couple years ago, and I feel like sometimes I can get a little tunnel visioned with it. I think, why do I look bad? Maybe it's because I am not actually XYZ type or I don't understand the lines properly. Sometimes you just need some common sense reminders. A little bit of a reminder that I could just be looking sleepy because my eyebrows need some love is good for preventing some sort of identity crisis whenever I leave the house looking like a zombie 🧟♀
For my coloring I actually look more alive in any kind of blue red tone but I look washed out and sickly tired if I wear eggplant. I wouldn't be surprised if everyone doesn't have a slightly different color that does it to them based on your undertones and contrasts and stuff.
You are really a very gifted person!

Just like I learned (a VERY long time ago) to choose hairstylists whose hair I like, I'm learning to trust make-up and style advice only from those whose own style I'm comfortable with. Aly's personal style is great, both lovely and classy; and her advice is ALWAYS good, and always makes sense to me. Thank you so much, Alyona! 😍❤
Reasonable, helpful tips! The only disagreement I'd offer is to say I think it *really* depends on how our eyebrow shape starts, whether it's reasonable to 'end' brows at the same horizontal level as where they start. My own brows start out essentially horizontal (though I can create a minor lifted angle by plucking), and then the 'arch' curves down from the horizontal. If I were to end my brows before they curve down, they would end far too soon, and that would look bizarre. Some of us just have natural features that involve brows ending lower than they begin, and that's okay! :) I'm often told I look young, anyhow. Maybe features with this natural trait are just suited to it.
Thank Heavens for your channel, Aly! 🥰💗💗💗 Can you make please more videos about brown ( greyish) haircolor. I ’ ve just started my new journey of getting my natural haircolor, but I am not sure if it’s good decision, I see all beautiful models with brown hair saying that thay don’t color their hair but in my case ( I had before blond highlights) I am worried that it looks to heavy and boring with my natural brown color.
I really like this idea of the video! Regarding bordeau in make up, especially te eyeshadow - what I've noticed on myself (neutral-warm olive, light-medium) is that its usually not the colour itself that ages, but its the blended bordeau which looks wierd on the skin. Based on my experience and if you really want to wear it, try blending the bordeau eyeshadow into the skin with neutral brown (neutral to your complexion) or taupe (personally, i prefer the taupe, since brown might turn too red). Also, I like to mix it with pastel-pink inner corner highlight to lighten the overall appearance of the bordeau. Hope it helps some of you! :)
Amazing video, Aly! I've learned soooo much from you throughout the years! Алена, я смотрю твои видео уже лет пять! Более того, была на твоем концерте в Москве несколько лет назад, но постеснялась подойти) Большое тебе спасибо за твой труд! Ты изменила мой взгляд на красоту и стиль!
But I do understand where she’s coming from, rounder faces (not tight as she described) like mine already make me seem younger than I am, hence the dewy complexion would make me look like a sweaty kid 😂😭
I never understood why people used pale blue shadow. It is not a shadow, it makes everything stand out.A lot of blue eyed blondes used frosted white or blue when I was a teen back back in the day.
I tried a new palette that had those purplish/reddish browns and kind of peachy lighter shades. Did a whole eye look that I saw a tutorial for on RUclips. Looked good on girl on the video, however, she had a completely different skin tone than me. I am very fair with dark strawberry blonde hair and freckles whereas they girl in the video had a much darker skin tone. Went grocery shopping and ran into my dad at the store. He says to me, "what's wrong with your eyes? Are you sick or something? Are you having bad allergies?" 😆😆😆 I haven't used that palette since. Lol
I am a dramatic classic with brown hair and medium skin. Clothes in bordeaux or burgundy colour looks really wonderful on me. In order to make it look fresh, I usually combine it with a lipstick in a light red or a vivid rosewood.
Ive taken your advice/tips and so happy with how my eyebrows turned out. Ive been to professional places to get my brows done and they never looked “right”. I took the time and did them myself the other day. ❤️ I feel more “me” now! Thank you for your videos
Totally forgot to keep up with your videos.. so I’m very happy to be able to go back and binge them all. Thank you. Your eye for detail is the THE BEST 🥰
Totally agree with most of these. My two exceptions would be the Bordeaux-colored clothing (which really makes people with deep complexions and strong contrast pop! ie. bright winters ) and drop shoulders. As a soft natural who does not wear very open or deep necklines, I actually find that drop shoulders and dolman sleeves complement my blunt, wide shoulders and drape quite naturally. They also complement my softer coloring. Standard shoulder seams tend to make me look heavier, uncomfortable broad, and like my clothing doesn't quite fit. I think the effect of these features (and the velvet, or other heavy fabrics, like satin) depends more on a person's body type.
Wow! This was soooo good/helpful. Idk why I clicked I was so over these types of vids it's always pointless info or someone advertising but i'm sooo glad I clicked on yours cuz this is the FIRST makeup video I actually learned from/learned A LOT. Thank you, girl! Subscribed💕
You are amazing thank you. Just reshaped my eyebrows while watching this video and they have never looked better 😭 I agree with Ophelia - you are truly gifted.
Oooh, Bordeaux red is kinda my power color tho! I have a muted warm medium/deep skin tone and Bordeaux red is deep/rich enough to resonate with my coloring but not so bold as to overpower me. Even on the eyes!!
The "too much makeup" is quite true. For my sisters wedding, the makeup artist overdid my face with every product possible. Bronzer, lashes, blood red lips, blush, smokey eye....The photos in her wedding album of me look terrible, I look yes, older. It's alright, I didn't freak out or anything no biggie. But I learned, especially now in a high cosmetic consumerism society, less is more. For me. Fantastic topic!
I purposely twist the brow rule and draw the front slightly lower than the tail, because I have a younger looking face and I want people to take me more seriously at work 😂
I love how you just jump into the video. Zero introduction, just good, solid advice that we haven’t heard before 500 times. Thank you Aly!

Can’t believe you’re the same person who does the best covers on my favorite songs. Your talent is beyond measure
You know what you’re talking about ! It amazes me how much you know, even when you’re commenting on features which are clearly not like yours.
Wow! Spot on with the Bordeaux color. That color along with burgundy makes the shadows of my face look like bruises.
It's pretty heavy, like Aly said, not fresh looking colour, not for everyone. It works on Dark Autumn, Dark Winter, Warm Autumn.
MCR circa 2006 vibe
I have been there before, and you are right, life can be really hard at times. I have figured out that if I am feeling like this, and I take a little bit of time to care for myself (to do something kind for myself that helps to rejuvenate me and that brings me joy) then that really helps! ❤ I hope you will do that for yourself too...you are worth caring about!!
Omg thank you for your responses. So kind of you xoxoxo
Yes, I usually enjoy her videos but this one was a miss for me. She has a great eye for style and shapes but maybe not for color...
@@claudis.4015 Yeah, 3/4 of the ladies looked great with the makeup, it's just a different look.
She just exposed 20 years of my cosmetology/ stylist learning in under 20 minutes!!! 🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼
I wish I had your channel back in 2002 !!
It took you 20 years just to learn those easy things?
I've never heard some of these tips, like the one about eye shadow under the eyes, but it makes so much sense! Thanks for sharing.
The burgundy color as well, depends on the skin tone, some colors complement skin tones more than others so it’s really not a general rule to avoid it
I paid Aly to give me a body and face and hair consultation and she was so spot on!
I am curious about this, do you mind sharing more specifics?
This made me think a lot. I'm a romantic with oily dehydrated skin and because of the video of makeup for romantics I started to use less matte base like tinted sunscreen or base in general, but my skin is puffy and nothing tight and I always noticed how saggy can make me look this shine in incorrect places like in all the face. Now I think that something more suitable for my face it's a matte one but not too thick and cakey
Me too! Everyone seems to looove dewy foundation but I always hated how it looks on my face, this really explains why!
You're so right about the brow starting line. I have furrows between my brows . much more flattering to make sure the brow line starts nearer to the number 1 diagram point . Great tips as usual , especially for us more mature ladies.
I finally understand why I never look good in liquid foundation, it's because of the puffiness! Thank you, Aly, for making that clear to me!
Your cool toned soft smokey eye looks gorgeous. I want whatever eyeshadow that is
Agreed. A tutorial on this look would be great.
I love how she went straight to the point without making long intro ❤️
I love your videos! The pic of Jaime French when you were talking about light eyeshadows absolutely cracked me up 🤣🤣🤣
15 things that make you look tired
Instantly in my head: My lifestyle 💀
For my coloring I actually look more alive in any kind of blue red tone but I look washed out and sickly tired if I wear eggplant. I wouldn't be surprised if everyone doesn't have a slightly different color that does it to them based on your undertones and contrasts and stuff.
Thank you for calling it like you see it. Your honest and genuine tips are refreshing & appreciated! Thanks for sharing ♥️.
You are really a very gifted person!
I have one of those fleshy Slavonic faces and I always mattify it to high heavens, bc the fashionable "dewy" finish makes me look like a wedding guest after four hours of partying. Now I know exactly why. Thanks Aliona, you're a lifesaver!
Great video 🙌🏼 On a non related topic, I really don’t think highlighting the tip of the nose is ever flattering 🙈
I have olive light skin (on the cooler side) ashy highlights look fantastic with my skin tone. I have to avoid brassiness at all costs!
You are intelligent, well studied about your subjects of interests and observant. You also style yourself uniquely and well. This all makes it a pleasure to watch your videos! God bless🌹
1:29 the girl on the bottom left is a makeup artist. She's actually very good. That pic came from a video she made making fun of the makeup trends in the 90s. 😆
Your channel is so high quality. Always top tier and not basic advice. THANK YOU.
Hazel eyes benefit a lot from bordeau!
I live Bordeaux eye shadow, I have green eyes.
I do need to tone it down, sometimes we all need an Aly3to tell us plain lol
Just like I learned (a VERY long time ago) to choose hairstylists whose hair I like, I'm learning to trust make-up and style advice only from those whose own style I'm comfortable with. Aly's personal style is great, both lovely and classy; and her advice is ALWAYS good, and always makes sense to me. Thank you so much, Alyona! 😍❤
Bordo color looks very refreshing on cold olive skin 👌🏻
Can you please make a video for olive skin tone. Sometimes my olive skin can look lively but sometimes I can easily look tired.
I love how you get straight to the point!
Have applied the recommendaion for the tails of the brow and it looks good! Thank you
Thank Heavens for your channel, Aly!
You are SUCH a good teacher. Very helpful for a woman pushing 60!
Can you do a part 2 Aly. Very informative
I agree with most everything but I think dewy skin looks much younger
Lol
Thanks Aly for all these tips! Would you consider making a video about tips to achieve timeless hair and make-up for a wedding?
Omg everything you said makes so sense. Thank you so much
I am a dramatic classic with brown hair and medium skin. Clothes in bordeaux or burgundy colour looks really wonderful on me. In order to make it look fresh, I usually combine it with a lipstick in a light red or a vivid rosewood.
Love your makeup today! Could you do a tutorial?
Ive taken your advice/tips and so happy with how my eyebrows turned out. Ive been to professional places to get my brows done and they never looked “right”. I took the time and did them myself the other day. ❤️ I feel more “me” now! Thank you for your videos
Yep. This lady really knows her stuff! Awesome.
I'm still so confused about the body type videos, so I'm happy to see this subject featured. It reminds me of the old makeup videos I love so much!
Fantastic example photos for each of your examples. I knew instantly what you were talking about.
Totally forgot to keep up with your videos.. so I’m very happy to be able to go back and binge them all. Thank you. Your eye for detail is the THE BEST 🥰
You really understand and master this topics. Thanks
More simple videos like this please. It was very informative and helpful
You are a highly underrated channel. Thank you!
Great tips, and Jaime French at 1:20 ❤ You've won my heart.
You and your videos are fantastic, thank you for sharing your self education! 🤟😘💞🕊
I think the effect of these features (and the velvet, or other heavy fabrics, like satin) depends more on a person's body type.
sitting in the front of class taking notes, thank u professor aly❤️❤️
Omg your videos are so fresh and with lots of information nobody says. It is so helpful! Thank you 😌
you are so right about bordeaux colour. Most people can't get away with it.
Any suggestions for camoflouging bags or puffiness under eyes?
You are always so helpful in your videos. Thank you!😊
Oooh, Bordeaux red is kinda my power color tho!
#1. Being tired! In all seriousness, thank you for the great video. You are a true professional.
I purposely twist the brow rule and draw the front slightly lower than the tail, because I have a younger looking face and I want people to take me more seriously at work 😂
