I used to feel guilty going out for lunch because everyone ate at their desk, but I needed that midday break to get some fresh air and enjoy my lunch away from my work 😁 I love that about Singapore work culture. Although I think they would be frustrated because I take more than a day to reply back to my emails haha thanks for this video! Loving the twice a week🥰

It's true we Singaporeans don't draw between work and life. I was traveling solo in the US for holidays and got a phone call in the middle of the night from colleagues in Singapore. I told her that I am in the US and is going to sleep. She said Ok and proceeded to discuss whatever she wanted to say. After that, she just hung up without even wishing me a happy vacation ...
The phone displays the caller name ... so it is your decision to reject, accept or move it into VM. We have so many scam calls in the US so I always divert calls from unknown callers to VM.
In India also there is lunch break. . I think life and work are inseparable. " But l have promises to keep, And miles to go before I sleep, And miles to go before I sleep". Enjoyed your video. When will you upload your next one?
Singapore can be exciting if you're doing business in ASEAN market, which is something you can't really do in the US easily. There's a lot of interesting work in e-commerce, logistics, Internet of Things, real estate development with very interesting problems to solve there

This is an awesome vid. Enjoyed your role playing. It was entertaining. I agree regarding WhatsApp. Medical offices use it to confirm appointments unlike in the U.S. where they tend to call and leave a voicemail. Voicemail is rarely used here and considered outdated. =). Go Niners!......I noticed your plastic container with the Niners logo.
oh hahaha thank you for enjoying this video. from time to time, i make some comedies LOL.... oh i don't think i have any 49ers . you mean the blue containers? that's US election sticker, after we voted, we were given a sticker LOL
Omg, yes! When I first started working at 21, I didn't understand why my ex-colleagues had to call me or walk over to me after they have sent me an email (no Whatsapp back then) literally minutes ago! I used to get really annoyed about it but I have since gotten used to it. Now, I try not to do that to younger colleagues! Even with Whatsapp messages just to "follow up"!
As for the vacation, it really depends on your company and your role in the company... I have seen both, the company assigned someone to take over while u are absent. I also saw the other, my friend working in the hotel toilet (don't wanna disturb his partner sleeping) at night in Taipei while he is on vacation. Lol.

On lunch hour, it really depends on the type of industry, position and company culture you are in. On email and WhatsApp, that just because many wants to get decision or action done very fast. With regards to leave, that is again depending on the industry, company culture and position. I have known many foreign high position executives that frequently attend to matter while on leave. Your video is light hearted and nice to watch. However, as you mention Singapore, I can't help but to clarify that the comparison is only from the experience you have working in a specific environment, company size and culture dealing with a specific group of people.
Hehe thank you for your comments. Feel free to clarify anything you’d like. We are all here sharing our experiences and everyone is different. And it’s not possible to talk about every single industry in my short video :) just for entertainment 😊 SG video up soon again in half a day
Well I'm travelling on holiday with my laptop. Has always been the case for any trip longer that 1 week. Laptop means work trip. Balance has a silver lining 😁
The last part is like a cassette player playing with the tape off the tape guide Anyway, back to the topic. I think how we look at our working culture depends on how you view the term "work" personally. For me, I'm teaching elementary school kids. No doubt, many times I have to resist the temptation to take off my shoe and throw it right at the kids' faces, but I don't because that will be the end of my career. Bringing work home to be completed is a common thing. Waking up 6am in the morning is also a common thing. If you were in my exact same shoes, will you continue your trek on this career path? If your reply is a "no", then most probably you do not have the passion for handling young kids or in the education sector. But my reply is a "yes" because I love what I am doing despite what I mentioned above. It is because I find this passion very fulfilling to be around with kids and seeing them learn new things from time to time. This gives me a great real sense of satisfaction. So bringing home papers to mark? I'll gladly do it, even if I'm overseas on a holiday. The reason is that I love my job, and I do not wake up every morning to drag myself to work. If you are happy working even if it is past your knock-off time, you do not hold this sense of lament in you. Something to ponder ;)
Thank you for your sharing. that's very detailed. I can totally see how passionate you are about your job. kudos to you and for us having such a passionate teacher! I think you may enjoy this video. Check it out! ruclips.net/video/54zcMaoG28U/видео.html

US & HK working cultures are good and I love it to cooperate with two separate time zone plus BD time zone since 1994 but SG system is a bit soft and less hardworking environment in Asia compare to US, HK, SZ etc busy places. Still I love Singapore a lot always compare to all these places due to gun control and other safety measures strictly 24/7

I believe from what you said means in America the boss will not blame on you for the job not being done if you had already sent the email to inform the other party. But here, the boss may question you: why you didn't remind the other side to read the email? Or check if the job is on process? If you answer had done the duty to send email, the boss may not happy: you means the matter does not related to you any more once you sent the email? Another reason: here, WhatsApp also consider official message like email
@@TheKrazyKoala it means sometimes sending message in WhatsApp also consider officailly informed or a 'contract'. if a person in the right position confirmed or promised something in WhatsApp it can be see as an officially deal between 2 companies.
I really enjoyed your video . I also use whats app but sparingly. Many of my Mexican friends prefer it so I use it some . Interesting that individuals phone numbers in Singapore aren’t very private or at least as private as in the U.S.. I’ve owned my own business for years and never had a problem with my customers having it or calling me day or night . I always felt like I need and want their business so I always included office and personal cell as contact on my emails .
Hi Craig! Thanks for your comment and happy that you enjoyed it! I haven't worked with Mexicans so i didnt know they also like whatsapp haha... Wow everyone can get your phone numbers :) I think in the US, we have biz number and also personal number separately :)
@@TheKrazyKoala Sharing to everyone the way I do is probably not the best idea but a few years back my customer called at 9:00 pm put me on speaker phone with several board members that were trying to make a decision on the type product we sell after the call the next morning they placed a several thousand dollar order with my shop . Sometimes it’s a distraction and sometimes it’s a big plus

Haha your role play was very similar to what I have experienced. However I have worst scenario. Give u an example. When people tends to email u for some query, in the morning, they will send u 1st email for some queries. Less than few hours before lunch, they will drop 2nd email reminders in the email header, after lunch they will send 3rd email as reminder and before going home they will send a final (4th email reminder) for the queries they asked. The next day, they will start to escalate the email to your boss mentioning that they has been chasing you for updates multiple times at least 4 times. (Didn’t stated that the 4 reminder actually was in one single day), giving your boss the impression that people email u multiple times how could u not replying back to others 😅😅😅
interesting video! the work culture in Singapore, in my humble view, is influenced by many factors including and not limited to for instance, type of industry, the peers, the boss, what is permissible and what is not. The experience you have in regards to the extended lunch hours is my mind and own experience and a privilege. Cheers!
Will you said about text message emails all that stuff it's true we don't mind when it takes forever for somebody to respond back because we like to think why is it taking forever maybe they're busy with somebody maybe they haven't got my message yet or maybe they're driving that is why we don't mind waiting for somebody to respond back
The only thing i enjoy about work is having lunch break. If i were to sit at my own desk eating tabao food or reheated food bought outside for quite some days, i would feel quite sad, dry and boring. Because all the time my body is facing my desk with work items around me and I rarely move my butt at all. I like it when my colleague has a car or when we are taking bus out for longer lunch break cuz i get to move out and it would really seem like a break to me 😊 . Tabao food is usually all the same to me , there is no variety.

this was kind of funny.. sending an email and then whatsapp-ing you the email and then going over to tell you in-person about the whatsapp message regarding the email. its the kiasu culture.

Yup no lunch time in the US! We’re lucky that there’s even time to eat for 10 minutes!
Lol
R u kidding? That's unimaginable 🤪
It's true we Singaporeans don't draw between work and life. I was traveling solo in the US for holidays and got a phone call in the middle of the night from colleagues in Singapore. I told her that I am in the US and is going to sleep. She said Ok and proceeded to discuss whatever she wanted to say. After that, she just hung up without even wishing me a happy vacation ...
haha yes hahahha poor you
The phone displays the caller name ... so it is your decision to reject, accept or move it into VM. We have so many scam calls in the US so I always divert calls from unknown callers to VM.
I am thinking of studying there
In India also there is lunch break.

Well I'm travelling on holiday with my laptop. Has always been the case for any trip longer that 1 week. Laptop means work trip. Balance has a silver lining 😁
👍👍
The last part is like a cassette player playing with the tape off the tape guide
Anyway, back to the topic.

What is so difficult? I Separate a work phone and a personal phone both with WhatsApp. When you're out of work just turn off the work phone period !
Hahaha 🤣 I only hv 1 phone
@@TheKrazyKoala Then you're mixing your personal stuffs with your work stuffs. You get messages from your mum & colleagues at the same time, not a good idea
In Singapore, you can’t turn off your phone, not even when you’re on leave or if you’re sick. We get a respite only if we’re out of Singapore and are traveling in a different time zone, and we claim there’s limited internet and mobile coverage.

US & HK working cultures are good and I love it to cooperate with two separate time zone plus BD time zone since 1994 but SG system is a bit soft and less hardworking environment in Asia compare to US, HK, SZ etc busy places.
Wow. Official email? Haha
@@TheKrazyKoala it means sometimes sending message in WhatsApp also consider officailly informed or a 'contract'. if a person in the right position confirmed or promised something in WhatsApp it can be see as an officially deal between 2 companies.
