I have listened to porcupine tree for 5 years now. Still so bloody brilliant.
No artists will ever top them. Ever.... Sorry but it aint happening. xD
The triple layered lyrics, the drumming, the outro. This album. How can something be so immaculate. This album is a ride I will never ever ever ever forget. Holy fuck man.

5:53 A snippet that shows Gavin Harrison is phenomenal. The melody on guitar stayed the same, but Gavin changed time signature from 8/8 to 6/8 with such a smooth transition, so smooth that you probably would not notice if you don't listen closely. This transition really is something.

    • @charlesberkeley168

+Xiyu Yang is it Gavin that comes up with this? or is it steven?

    • @charlesberkeley168

+Kerwin Tsang actually it sounds like the guitar is in 3 the whole time- just in polyrhythm with the drums.

    • @rhinehartd
      @rhinehartd 8 лет назад +8

+Charles Berkeley From what I've read from interviews with Steven, he writes demos of the songs with very basic drum patterns, and then Gavin would spice them up. So I'm pretty sure that the changing time signature was Gavin's idea.

Charles Berkeley You're right, the guitar is always in 3, but Gavin's polyrhythm made the first half of it sounds like in 4.

By this time, he had a band comprised of Gavin Harrison on drums, Richard Barberi on synths, and Colin Edwin on bass. A tiny flame inside my hand
    A compromise I never planned
    Unravel out the finer strands
And I'm looking at a blank page now
Should I fill it up with words somehow?
I whispered something in her ear
I bare my soul but she don't hear
    The scratching of a mellotron
It always seemed to make her cry
    Well maybe she remembers us
Collecting space up in the sky
Nothing rises from my feet of clay, but it's OK
Red mist spreads across my fingertips, ardour slips
I lay her gently on my clothes
She will leave me yes I know
And I'm looking at a blank page now
Should I fill it up with words somehow?
    The scratching of a mellotron
It always seemed to make her cry
    Well maybe she remembers us
Collecting space up in the sky
Nothing rises from my feet of clay, but it's OK
Red mist spreads across my fingertips, ardour slips
Don't look at me with your mother's eyes or your killer smile
    Sing a lullaby
    Don't look back into black
Don't let the memory of sound drag you down
To end as friends so painful
    Don't look down

I first heard this on a mixtape an old friend of mine made me decades ago, of the bands we'd seen together in a tiny LA music venue I have sadly forgotten the name of. This was the last track, and I thought I would never hear it again. I've tried and tried to remember even half of the song names on that tape, and all of a sudden out of nowhere, "Mellotron Scratch" popped into my head. I had no idea what it was, until I clicked this video and it all came flooding back.
This song will always represent that cherished time in my youth. The venue may be gone and I lost touch with that friend many years ago, but at least I will always have song echoing through my memory.

Interesting fact: The drums in that part is playing a steady 4/4 beat even though the guitar is playing in 6/8. 6/8 is basicly 3/4, but in a fast tempo. Another band that used this in the idea was for example "Led Zeppelin with "Kasmir".

From 5:06 on the guitar gives a feeling of counting in 3 while the drums plays a simple 4. Almost every time whenever the drums goes into a new 4 the guitar will change the chord slightly even though it will keep it's counting of 3. To make this easier to understand I will put it down like this (Every "///" is a completed 4 on the drums.): 12312312///31231231///23123123///12312312. Let me know if you have any questions, because I saw that some people talking about this.

CUDOS! IT'S COLLOQUIAL MUSICAL TERMONOLOGY IS "A ROUND," aka a "PERPETUAL CANON" [CANON PERPETUUS in ITALIAN, THE PEFERRED LANGUAGE OF MUSICAL DIRECTION) AND... "AN INFINTE CANON" IN RECORDING TERMINOLOGY... HOWEVER, IN EARLIEST COLOQUIAL MUSICAL TERMINOLOGY, IT IS REFFERED TO AS "A ROUND," DEMOSTRATED TO EARLY MUSICAL SCHOLARS WITH THE SONG: "ROW ROW ROW YOUR BOAT, GENTLY DOWN THE STREAM," WITH EACH PART THEN BEGINNING (& REPEATING) IN STRICT MUSICAL PROGRESSION: ONE AFTER THE OTHER, AS THE FIRST PHRASE COMPLETES ITSELF. THEREFORE, BECOMING ENDLESS. NOT UNLIKE THE DREADED CIRCUMFRENCE OF A CIRCLE IN MATHEMATICS; IT THEREFORE BECOMES "ENDLESS." BUT AS AN ENDING, ALTHOUGH PLEASING TO THE EAR IN A RECORDING ENVORONMENT, TO END A PIECE/SONG "LIVE", THEREFORE PRESENTS A CHALLENGE TO MUSICIANS... BUT, ALTHOUGH THEORETICALLY IMPOSSIBLE TO PERFORM, IT CAN INDEED BE DONE FOOLING THE EAR BOTH EFFECTIVELY & QUITE DRAMATICALLY.

I hope the new album has something close to this song specially the end of it

I came back here because the new song didn't quite click with me. I don't think the new album is going to have a song in the vein of anything from Deadwing though I hope I get proven wrong.

    OverviewLyricsVideos
A tiny flame inside my head
    A compromise I never planned
    Unravel out the finest trends
And I'm looking at a blank page now
Should have filled it up with words somehow
I whispered something in her ear
I'd bear my soul but she don't hear
    The scratching of a mellotron
It always seemed to make her cry
Well maybe she remembers us collecting space up in the sky
    The scratching of a mellotron
It always seemed to make her cry
(Nothing rises from ? fingertips, heart it slips)
I lay her gently on my clove
She will leave me, yes I know
And I'm looking at a blank page now
Should have filled it up with words somehow
    The scratching of a mellotron
It always seemed to make her cry
Well maybe she remembers us collecting space up in the sky

The chorus of this song is incredibly weird to me. Kind of like if there was some altenate version of it that i heard first and now i get confused when i listen to the song normally. Still good though.

Yeah, but it is sampled, not a real one. Steven Wilson bought a real mellotron in 2014 though!

I always thought the guitar riff @4:30 should have lasted a little longer. Great song nevertheless.
