I just love watching your videos!! You encourage me every time. ❤️
Thank you so much!!
I used to use the Purple Thang until I discovered sharp-nosed angle-tipped tweezers. They can be used as tweezers, a stiletto, an awl, thread cutter, point turner with thick fabric, to pull cord or ribbon through casings, and the sharp nose easily fits under the presser foot too so you can continue to grip fabric when getting really close to the needle (which is sometimes needed).
Instead of using plastic totes or baskets for kitting projects, I used some favorite fabrics to make collapsible bins.
I will have to give that a try. Always be a student! Never stop learning or experimenting 🥰
I love pre-cuts because of arthritis in my hands and someone else does the cutting.
I'm so glad that the precuts allow you to still do what you love to do 🤩
Those clips saved my hands from holding the binding and getting carpel tunnel while hand binding. Saves a ton of time not having to readjust the binding all the time as well.
These tools are great. I love my clips, especially for binding. I stuck myself too many times, no more. They actually hold better than I thought.
Me too! no time for pokey pins! 😂
Loved this video. Great information.
Glad you enjoyed it!
I just found you today and I’m all in!!!
Awe, that is so so sweet.
Thank you for your videos!!
You were so refreshing. I am a new quilter and just love doing it. You were so informing. Thank you
You are so welcome! Thank you for watching. If there is anything I can do for you, please let me know
My sister and I have made hundreds (mostly baby sized) of quilts and never knew about the Seam Fix seam ripper. It is AMAZING! Thanks for sharing that tool.
You're so welcome! Thank you for watching! 😘
Thank you for sharing! I am a newbie to the quilt world and need all the tips I can find😄. I do make handbags and find that using hair clips the cheap metal ones (alligator mouth look) that ladies used to use for pin curls. They are easy and do not damage your fab and as you are sewing they pop off without pulling your fab when removing.
Awesome tip of using what you have on hand! 🥰 welcome to the quilting world!
Yay for precuts! I have fallen in love with those!
I have too now. They are amazing!
Looking forward to your jelly roll videos!
Did you join my Jelly Roll Party later this month?? stitch.academy/jellyrollrace-7739 You should come!
Thank you so much for your tips. I will try the boxes for projects. Love that idea.
Also looking forward to April 6 bed scarf sew along. And now a jelly roll sew along! I'm in heaven!
I know! me too! I love having the fun things on the calendar!!
I love my Accuquilt machine. Cutting strips and all other things is great!
Thanks for the box idea. I usually have a project or two left on my sewing table and sometimes pieces get all over. Such a simple but awesome idea!
the simple ideas are usually the best ones 😘 Glad you can use it!
Amazing, I totally agree, but I do love Tula’s scalpel and or the white handled Clover to get seams!
Thank you for showing the viewers the seam ripper that you love. I too bought one and love the seam ripper but didn't know why the rubber end was that way. Now I know!! I'll be using it every day now. Thanks again!! Sew neat!!
Right?! I think they're missing a superb marking opportunity 🥰 Glad you found it helpful!
I truly gained info from this video! Thank you so much
You are so welcome! I'm glad it was helpful!
Just found your video, I got away from quilting nearly 20 yrs first time then about 10 years been sewing up a storm! Am amazed at all the new tools, love the clips and thang, I was so happy I bought a ton of rulers , squares , circle, turntable many years ago ! I’ve a lot everyone bought on 40 or 50% sale was in financial better times , prices are so high now ! But worth it!
My nightmare has been markers ! I’ve bought a lot ! Ones on tv didn’t work for me ! Anyway every one I’m sure has their favorite I usually end up using the good old original purple ! I am just going to try precuts I’ve used jelly rolls a lot in past !
But not many blocks precut , fat quarters I collected ! I agree about boxes, I always use a container for what I need for each project ! Thread? I’ve a lot of cones for my serger , but I have used coats and Clark’s cotton white /black thread forever! But first time I ordered cones !
My best tip is shop around, look for sale items, use Amazon , I’m still relearning ! Im making a TShirt quilt for grandson double sided ! 32 blocks ! Have done a photograph block, but it’s been the hardest quilt I’ve done so far ! Never again !
I didn’t realize most people do 9 or 12 blocks ! Anyway I’m starting to quilt blocks before joining them …. On tv everyone uses 15 inch block, the tshirts I got barely made 12 1/2 inch and eventually they might all be trimmed to 11 1/2 Lol
It’s been a hard one for me ! Best thing is to have fun !! Im trying to get out of bad mood I’ve had for past week working on it LOL …I dearly love my grandson ! I have other s I love as much but they didn’t save shirts ! Thank God ! so be a regular quilt for them I have 8 grandkids 4 more to do quilt for !.
I will try out the Juki quilting machine I bought! I’ve always used the long arm quilter but being on fixed income, I would love to be able to do my own … sorry for the book!
I loved reading about your quilts~ Tshirt quilts aren't the easiest to work with. It has a whole new set of challenges but hopefully will be a very cherished quilt. 🥰 Good luck and remember you can take a break when you need to!
You have such usable/helpful tutorials!!
So happy that you love them, Linda! 😘😘
I appreciate your advice. I am a newer quilter and I love learning how to make life easier. Great 💡 ideas. This was very helpful. Thank you for sharing this with us 😊💖🪡🧵✂️🦓❣️
Glad it was helpful!
You are the most amazing (talkative) person to watch, because you’re a terrific teacher!!!
Aw thank you for watching! 🥰 I'm happy my videos are helpful!
Hi there. Great tips. I love my rotary cutters (have several), purple thang (have two) and just bought the metal thread stand (have two plastic ones). I do love my jelly rolls, too. Just subscribed.
~Rochelle
That is awesome! I'm glad that you're finding the tools that you really love using 🥰
Hi Christen, I’m a new subscriber. I love your way of explaining, and I’m just getting back to quilting after a three-month break so I look forward to seeing you regularly. My aunt, and godmother, has just gone into assisted living, and her children have given me her enormous stash of fabric, so I now have all kinds of fresh inspiration. I’m with you on the project boxes, too. I’ve been using (new) pizza boxes mainly because they are big enough to hold finished blocks. Peace from Ohio …
Welcome back to quilting 🥰ok pizza boxes... this is mind blowing for me. I absolutely love how that would work for projects and I'm going to be going on amazon right now to check them out.
I just ask for one when we go out for pizza. The local places around here have been happy to give me an unused one to take home. I always offer to buy one, but they don’t charge me. Peace …
Wow. Good idea w pizza boxes. Where do you stack them? I don't have a lot as I do one project at a time. I get storage containers at dollar tree. In fact, they have so many items that make quilting easier.
@@grandmalovesmebest I have several in use right now, with two of them just sitting on top of my small fabric cabinet so they’re handy as I cut and sew the blocks for those quilts. A third one is for a UFO that has been stagnant for a few years, and I think it’s in a closet now. Hope this helpful!
I love this! Thank you!!!
You are so welcome! Thank you for watching!
I love precuts!!! And your tips! I already ordered the seam ripper/eraserhead. Thank you for the video 😊👍💕
You're going to love it! I'm glad you enjoyed the video 🥰🥰
I would add Quilt Cut's Starter kit of rulers... They are great rulers: High quality, non slip and easy to read. Their starter kit is amazing at less than $40. I bought one of their rulers to check it out, and I was very impressed (and I have very nice rulers) and find myself reaching for it often. It has the best 1/8th marks on it.
I also like Havel's UltraPro seam ripper and highly recommend. It has a scythe-like replaceable blade so you always have a sharp blade. It is so thin and flexible the smallest of stitches can be removed. Another essential tool is a pair of precision eagle beak tweezers. It will help with machine threading (forget the clumsy serger offsets), handling fabric and seam ripping: Tip: cut every 5-8 threads on one side with Havel and take your eagle beak tweezers to grab the thread and remove.
I love fat quarter bundles and jelly rolls (I look for closeouts on beautiful ones). Would never buy precut background as it is not a good value.
Wow! Great advice! Thank you for sharing it with us quilters!
@@ISeeStarsQuilting Of course you know how I became an expert at seam ripping! (Will say that garment sewing (unsewing) was the crossover insight)
New subscriber here. Love your videos. I am a fairly new quilter I started quilting in January 2020. I was supposed to take classes March 2020 and the big C hit. They canceled all the classes, so everything I have learned has been from YT and the internet. I am a Texas girl too. Right outside of Fort Worth. I homeschool my last three kiddos. So I see when I can. Blessings!!
Thank you for subscribing! I'm glad you found me. If you're still looking for a full quilt class. i do have a class that is going to be opening up in a few weeks. Its start to finish everything quilting related and on your own time. You can get your name on the waitlist and check out more information here: iseestarsquilting.shop/mqmewaitlist-5782
You are just the cutest! Loved the video. I’m a fairly new quilter. I belong to my local quilt guild. All of the ladies have so much knowledge to share. They are all amazing sewers/quilters in different ways. New subscriber 😉
Aw thank you so much! Welcome to the quilting world! You're going ot learn that we have some of the best people here! If you have any questions, feel free to reach out!
Yes, precuts is the way to go!!!!
I have ordered several of the items mentioned in this video. I agree wholeheartedly with project boxes. Once I got a bunch, I organized my fabric and supplies. I can’t agree more that it keeps the sewing room neater, and makes cleanup at the end of the session so much more efficient. I suggest getting a method of labeling the project boxes that helps you locate necessities when working on projects. I find that I only have one project out at a time when using this organization method.
Thanks for sharing!! I totally agree
Just bought these clips love them !
Glad you like them! I use them everywhere in my projects and I love the fun colors they come in!
YES, to the project boxes/basket.
So glad you agree! 🥳
U have a great personality, love it. I’ll be back. Thank you for the advice. I’m starting out and need all the advice on tools before I take the journey.
Welcome to the quilting world!! 🥰🥰
Very good explanation. You know your stuff.
I'm so glad it was helpful! 🥰🥰
Thank you. I had no idea the rubber end of the seam ripper was for removing threads.
You are welcome!
I just discovered you! You're great! Thanks for the awesome tips.
You are so welcome! I'm glad that you enjoyed them!
yeah! more jelly roll SA!
I'm SO looking forward to it too!
I'm a starter and don't know much yet about quilting. You spoke about lacer and I had no idea what you were talking about.
I'm so excited to hear you have started quilting!!! Welcome!
Instead of a spool stand, I use a binder cllip on the spool holder on top of the machine. Usually, the cone will stand on the sewing table behind the machine and the thread easily goes through the handles of the clip. It works perfectly and if money is tight (it is) a binder clip works well an doesn't cost as much as the stand.
That Is a really handy tip. Thank you for sharing
Love ❤️ precuts
Me too, girl. I am so happy I jumped on board!
Great list but I would suggest the Creative Grids Rulers because they have the grippy stuff on the backs and won’t slip around. I first bought whatever was on sale but I wish I had invested in CG.
I do love the creative grids rulers. They're phenomenal! Thanks for bringing them up!
If you have older rulers and templates use the sandpaper dots . I use them on the back of my rulers and templates. Will not let ruler slip.
I have started replacing the omni grid rulers with all creative grid rulers
Aaaaaand I'm seeing this on May 1st. LOL Missed the event but sounds super fun. Thanks for the tips!
Hey! I'll do another event sometime soon. 🤩 You can still catch the replay on my channel video page! It was a fun party
I really need to get some precuts!! I am excited to try jelly rolls! You have definitely inspired me to get some and try a few quilts!! 🥰 thanks for the list of stuff to get/have! I have most but now I must go watch the laser video!! 🥰
Hi Mary! Make sure you sign up for my Jelly Roll Sewalong! I would love to have you there!
@@ISeeStarsQuilting I definitely would love to!! I will check my calendar!
When I first started quilting, I was excited to put pre-cuts together, but learned that they all don't go straight together, because of the seam allowances. So to go with a full 10" layer cake square, a 5" charm square, needs to be cut at 5 1/2", and the 2 1/2" needs to be 3", or you need to trim the larger ones down. I still like the idea of two 2 1/2" square 4-patches (finishes at 4 1/2"), in a 4-patch with 2× 5" squares (they finish at 9 1/2"), alternated with the 10" squares, but the waste gets to me. Have fun with them all, I do.
Fab video. I’m from the uk and pre cuts are really pricey here. I only found u tonight, so I will now binge watch ur videos xx
Awesome! I'm so glad that you found me. 🥰Thank you for watching!
Love these tips. What are the things you bought that weren’t as good as you were hoping? The things you’d tell people to skip if they are doing general quilting.
Great question. I hate to put down a products simply because it didn't work for me... it may work great for someone else! But I'll see if I can make a video sometime of the ones that I feel didn't live up to the hype!
@@ISeeStarsQuilting I understand that. I think sometimes there are tools that are good tools but maybe aren’t some thing a beginner needs. I have a little hand roller presser, that I never use because I always finger press and then press with an iron. Or certain rulers I bought and then found out I could do the same thing with something else. They aren’t bad products, I just didn’t need to spend money on them as a beginner.
Just found you tonight.... Always excited to learn from fellow Texan 💜
Yay more Texas girls!! 🥰🥰
Great video
Glad you enjoyed it! Thank you!
Check the Martelli rotary cutter. I found it gives me better control when cutting fabric, is very easy on my wrist and I rarely use my traditional rotary cutter now. They have great quilting accessories.
Thanks for the tip! I'll check it out!
I have severe rheumatoid arthritis and using the Martello cutters has saved me so much in pain!! Highly recommend.
I love precuts also
Hello from Qaqortoq, Greenland. Enjoyed what you shared for notions! ;)
Hello there! Thanks so much!!!
I bought expensive martelli cutters and they were great, until my hands began to misalign from old age arthritis. Eventually they made my hands hurt trying to grip, hold, extend an index finger, and cut. Finally, I was doing acrobatics to get into a cutting position!
Now I have a very light, straight Westcott cutter ($8 at walmart) and, btw, those blades last for ages & cut easily.
So you are right. Try several types and don't be surprised if you need a different type along the way.
Thanks for the info. Subbed.🙋
YES! That is exactly what I was talking about. So glad you have one that works well for you!
I would add as an invaluable tool is that size Irina you have. I have one with a wool mat at my sewing machine when I'm doing paper pricing. Quick and just the right size for the job.
Oh my gosh yes! If I had made my list 11 things instead of 10... my tiny iron would have been in this video! I love that thing, but choices had to me made to fit it into a list of 10!
So many people are making quilting/sewing videos these days and when I first clicked on to yours I thought it would be another “same old, same old”. You know what, though? I have been quilting and making clothes for over 50 years and I learn some truly helpful ideas from you every time! For one thing, new ideas from younger sewists are a way for us (of a certain age) to get out of sewing ruts. I appreciate the content and presentation in your videos so thank you!
P.S. I LOVE ❤️ THE PURPLE THANG!
You're so welcome. Thank you for sharing this with me. I really appreciate the feedback. I feel like I still have so much to learn out there too 😘 Thank you for watching!
I have several purple thangs - one at each sewing machine (Singer 66, Kenmore 158, Montgomery Ward 1964, Brother CS6000i) and I did not realize the 1/4" aspect at the square end until now. LOL
Hey! Glad you learned something new today! 🥰🥰
Do you use the hole in your purple thang? It would be great to put draw cords into casings, or elastic into waistbands etc?
Stop. Omg. I NEVER thought of that before. I didn't know what the hole was for..... thank you for sharing Kathleen!
As a new quilter I love Pre-cuts. Where I live most fabric stores don’t carry jelly rolls, but do carry charm packs and fat quarters. I have to buy jelly rolls on line, which is a bummer because I’d like to see the actual fabric before purchasing. ☹️
OH boo, that is a bummer, but still glad you can get other things.
Hi, great video! I just bought my first sewing machine this week to start. Silly question. Can you use the aurifil 1,000 ish yard thread on the on the machine? Or do you need a special piece for this? I have the 500 yard coats but thinking I should try this instead. Didn’t know if I could put it on the same spool holder.
There is a thread stand that you can buy for less than $15 that will hold the larger threads! I use one all the time next to my machine and skip the little holder on the top of the machine.
@@ISeeStarsQuilting would love to see a tutorial on how you use that. I bought the long medal spool holder but never used it. I have Juki 2010Q and a Juki NHXZ something
@@LawandaFinch Hi I have a Juki as well. It came with two places for thread. One is much taller with different size holders for different size spools. If that makes sense? I'm a color nut so I have all different sizes except the 6000 yd. I have no place storage wise to put those...lol. If the one that is talked about here pls let me know. Mine seems to do the job for now. Thx🌼
Rather than expensive clips, I just use mini binder clips. Many to a pack for not much $.
I use a coffee cup to hold the thread cones.
I saw in another video your design board. What do you use for that?
My current design board is my bed lol. I'm moving all of my crafting stuff into its own room.
Another question: How much adhesive interfacing do you need for a standard 40 piece jelly roll quilt? I've made my own clothing in the past, but quilting is new on the playing field. Thank you for your help!
Congratulations on getting your sewing/crafting space! woohoo!
I don't use adhesive interfacing my jelly roll quilts... what method or pattern are you using? I do have a tutorial video for a Jelly roll quilt that is great for beginners. You can check that out here: ruclips.net/video/JxGFOixu6wA/видео.html Let me know if you have any questions
You're so cute! I really enjoy your channel!
Thank you for watching 😘😘
I'm a fetus quilter and attempting my first baby quilt, (im still cutting pieces and i get my sewing machine tomorrow) Thanks for you video. 💜
You're so welcome :) Let me know if you have any questions! Good luck to you!
Have you seen the video from Harbors Freight for quilting? She shows things that áre a great price for items that we can use.... Like a magnet dish for screws ( quilting pins).
Yes I do love some of the suggestions!
I use ziplock bags to organize my projects, that way you can see what is the project about
Wonderful tip, I love that idea.
Hi! I'd like to know about the small iron you use. The one that fits in the palm of your hand. The big clunky ones I have are just too heavy. I think I found it but would like to know which one you use. Looks perfect for my arthritic hands. Second, about jelly rolls. I just bought my first ones. When I started quilting they were non-existent. Looking forward to seeing how they work. I always think a bigger piece of fabric is better bcz I may want to use the leftovers on another quilt. Fabric patterns change so much I am afraid I'll never find it again. Third I'd like to know which ironing mat/ board you use. I have 3 different kinds. The new wool mats are nice but are they better than just a small table top board? My space is small. Quilting is expensive and I'd rather buy fabric. Thank you so much. You are very helpful. I taught myself to quilt a long time ago and you are so right. Everyone needs to make their own mistakes and learn from them. Such is life🤷 Happy quilting 🧵
This is the iron I own: amzn.to/3PchF4G I've had it since 2017 and its amazing. My absolute fave and yes, very easy on the wrists! 😍😍
Is that the same thread you have. The one on Amazon appear smaller than the white one you showed
The one I showed in the video is a 3,000 yard one. (Oops) That color is actually Signature brand thread - Color: Azure. Its really a very light mint color. The white I buy is this one here that has 6,000 yards on it - amzn.to/3wRt9oe
What’s your opinion poly vs 100 cotton thread, for me I worry the cotton thread just makes too much dust in my machine, a pfaff I cannot do any self maintenance on except but dust out my bobbin carriage etc… but it’s not suggested to ever use air to blow out the inside crevices in the machine itself and any areas imho …feel would be beneficial to blow out. out. My quilt shop where I purchased my machine charges $200 a yr to clean and service it. Poly being less dusty I’m considering switching to. What do you think?
I think a mix is a good solution to your situation. maybe alike an 80/20 mix? (80 cotton/20 poly) you'd get the benefits of cotton with the cleanliness of poly. Just be careful not to go to the cheap cheap thread route because they have a wax coating that feels nice and doesn't shed but will add buildup to your machine and I've seen it ruin a perfectly good machine before! test out a white spool or 2 and see what you think! try it out.
Seam ripping thread pieces... I use stainless steel tweezers. You're going to need to pick those pieces up anyway, use a nice set of tweezers to pluck the threads, lift them from the fabric, and deposit them in the waste bin.
Thanks for the tips!
I like precuts but I very much dislike pinked edges. Much prefer clean straight edges for accuracy. So, I only buy precuts that do not have pinked edges.
Pinked edges are the craft glitter of the quilting world 🤩🤩🤩
ISeeStarsQuilting Yes, and “all that glitters isn’t gold” 😊
You can make your own pre-cuts with your project scraps, or cut a jelly roll strip off the end of each fabric you buy, or cut 13" (×2fat 16ths)/ 20", to get the same area as a fq, (you can cut ×2 fqs from 20" ×wof, and swap or share with a quilty friend, to get more variety) while you have it out. Fat quarters can make 2 half jelly roll strips, a 10" square, 2 or more charm squares and a bunch of 2 1/2" squares, easily. You can cut up your scraps, leftover fqs or ones you don't like much. You can leave 10" squares together, and re-cut them down to 5" or 2 1/2" later. Pre-cut packs have 42 pieces, you can wait until you have enough cut, or make things that don't use a whole pack. The possibilities are endless. All the best.
Purple thank is also bodkin,, ie inserting elastic
Thanks for sharing! That is good to know
What thread brands and weights do you recommend?
I've never had an issue with Aurofil thread - it can run more expensive than your craft store brands. Geuterman has been around forever and is found in most craft stores. I like the 50 weight for use in my sewing machine.
Thank you
For all who struggles with weight, please look into an intermittent fasting plus low carb. It is the only thing that worked for me. Stay healthy and keep us inspired 🎉😊❤
Had never heard of lazer for sewing
What did you think of it? Were you impressed with the idea?
magic clips, specifically? or are the 100 clips for $7 just as good? those brand name ones are super expensive for just like 12 of them, so before i take the plunge, please help! ty!
The cheap ones work fine for me! You will be needing lots of them 🥰
I just missed your party
only by just a little bit. I'll be doing another event soon. 🤩 You can still catch the replay on my channel video page! It was a fun party
What is the name/brand of the seam ripper?
It is a Seam Fix seam ripper and thread remover. There is also a link under the video that has all of my favorite tools 🥰
I bought a purple thang a couple years ago and didn’t like it because it seems so flimsy... I use a stiletto awl or a bone folder for those jobs
My fave tool is a long overlocker threader (I think Dritz make them in the US)... much more sturdy than those tiny silver sewing needle ones and I use a million times a session for threading lol.... and my XL Stripology ruler I just bought is my newest tool ... I’m a ruler freak and have almost all sizes of any type of quilting ruler lol
YES to all the rulers! lol me too! I'll have to look up the theading tool. I don't think I have that one (must try out all the tools, you know LOL)
@@ISeeStarsQuilting please do... it changed my life! (I do have an industrial machine for bagmaking I use it mainly on too since they are threaded right to left, rather than back to front). I think it’s called an overlocker/serger/looper threader as well, it has a blue plastic bit on the bottom of a long needle with threading loop at the top end!
Where do we sign up for the party at?!? 😊
This is an old video... But it was such a fun time! I may consider doing another one soon 🥰
I wish you would have demonstrated as you showed each tool. But love your RUclips
Don't have a seam ripper with a rubber tip? Wrap a rubberband around the en of the seam ripper you have. You will be able to "erase" loose threads.
... I am a little upset that I didn't think about this tip sooner. That is brilliant and I will be using this 🤩 Thank you for sharing!
Very cool.
What about running out of bobbin thread constantly?
There are prewound bobbins that you can buy in bulk! These are super handy for people who do A LOT of sewing. They mostly are available in white or black but I have seen some options with colors. Check them out on Amazon here: amzn.to/3LSr3cg
I have been looking at lasers but available ones have poor reviews
Oh no. That is not good.
good tips though
Thank you ❤️glad they were helpful!
Brenda sent me.
Welcome!!
Small clips or large?
I have a combination of both... but I probably go more towards the bigger size for binding
I do wish you would have demonstrated each tool…but thanks for your list.
That is a great suggestion. I will take that into consideration for another video 😘😘
Where's the event link?
Here you go. It was in the description box below the video. JELLY ROLL PARTY REGISTRATION - stitch.academy/jellyrollrace-7739
What are layers?
Check out this video. 🌟 it is a review on a quilt laser light I did: ruclips.net/video/6ay199K9ixo/видео.html
Be sure to put that thread stand behind the machine rather than by the fly wheel. Thread can catch and wrap around the fly wheel. Asked me how I know.
I'm so afraid to ask 😬 I will make note of that when I sew. Thanks for sharing
I meant lazers
Are you going to have another jelly roll month in 2024 ?
.... I hadn't thought about it yet, but I certainly am now! 🥳🤩 Thanks for the suggestion. I'll get right on that!
Why don’t you sell some of these things -- like laser light and LED light……..
I have links below my videos where you can find the products that I use in my videos 🥰
Please don’t talk so quickly .
There is a gear icon on the bottom right of all youtube videos. You can control how fast the play back is if that makes it easier for you to follow tutorial videos 😘 I hope that helps!
