      This is so wonderful to hear!! Congratulations on jumping in there and making it! - as far as quilting, I usually just use a meander pattern or figure out a curvy line pattern to contradict all of the straight lines in the jelly rolls. It just adds something a little different to it

      Hi Donna, You start by sewing allll of your jelly roll strips together, end to end to make a really long ribbon that is 2.5 inches wide. Then you take both of your ends (most of my jelly roll strips are over 1600" long) and sew them together making another long strip that is 4.5" wide and half as long as the original long pieced ribbon. then you continue. You can do it! you're welcome to email me if you have any questions

    I did a Jello Roll Race Quilt top in a class, at a Quilt Show many years ago. The fabric was already cut into strips; and, it was inside sealed clear plastic bags. You picked out your bag. We were then given instructions. Then the race began. When all my strips were sewed together, I wanted to see how long it was. We were in a very long room with movable walls. My connected strings went all the way across the long end of the room and part way up the wall. There was no way to guess how long the whole string would be; because, some of the strips were cut a little shorter than some of the others; and, no two strips were of the same color or print. Most of us finished at about the same time. However, there were two speed demons in the room. This class was a lot of fun.

  • @Heather_Krystene
    @Heather_Krystene 2 месяца назад

    This is my very first quilt. I have tried before but I was doing triangles and couldn't get them to stay square, and that was years ago. I also took a regular blanket and used it for batting, a length of fabric that had a steam engine going through the snow and I think 3 or 4 yards of navy blue fabric. I didn't know how to do any quilting and we didn't have RUclips back then. I sewed about 2-foot section at the top of the train material and the rest on the bottom and then pinned it to the blanket and then decided to get more of the blue for the back. It didn't stand up very well because I didn't know how to quilt but my ex loved it at the time. Mine won't look as random as yours because I only have 5 patterns on my strips. I bought mine at Walmart and they came in a bag of 20 strips 2.5"x42. I bought 2 bags that matched. But so far, besides the fact that I wish I had more variation, I am liking how it's going so far. It's definitely helping me learn to sew straight. Thank you so much!!

    • @ISeeStarsQuilting
      @ISeeStarsQuilting  Год назад +1

      Not too much. The strips come precut at 40"... but some of the selvedge edges make for a little more trimming to make sure you're getting just the pretty fabrics.

    • @ISeeStarsQuilting
      @ISeeStarsQuilting  Год назад

      I usually off set at least 1/2 of a strip... it depends on what you size strips you're working with, but if they are all the same size, offset 1/2 of the first strip and you should be good to go!

    • @ISeeStarsQuilting
      @ISeeStarsQuilting  2 года назад

      oh no! Puckers are such a pesky quilt problem! I'm sorry you have one. It is part of the learning process... I will say that in the past, and if you can disguise it (depending on what backing fabric you have) I have used seam tape (I like this kind: amzn.to/3NjwHo3 ) You might have to cut the fabric and then tuck in your raw edges and then fuse it back together with the seam tap and your iron. If done nicely you might be the only one who knows it is there. Being your first quilt, I wouldn't be too hard on yourself. There are somethings and skills that you will only learn by doing things incorrectly the first time! I'm happy to help or offer specific suggestions if you want to email me me photos of the project ❤😘

    Hi. First time finding you. How many strips and the length in your jelly roll? Thanks! Beautiful quilt!

    • @ISeeStarsQuilting
      @ISeeStarsQuilting  Год назад

      Typical Jelly Roll Packs come with 42-44 strips that are 40" in length 🥳

  • @lauralee8614
    @lauralee8614 2 года назад

    Well I trimmed my ends and pressed them. Then I started sewing the 20" strips together after watching this video again. Yes, I sewed them together wrong. So, out came the seam ripper and I started over again from the beginning . Now that I'm ready for the next step, I came back to this video to hear that the verbal instructions are not correct. At 8:42 seconds in you say to put the right side down. I believe you meant, the right side up. This way we are sewing right sides together. I think that's why I goofed up. Either that or I don''t understand the lingo.

      Oh no! I'll double check that - I apologize if my wording was confusing. I'm glad that you got it figured out and hopefully made a beautiful quilt top!

  • @marleneruby-suarez4342
    @marleneruby-suarez4342 Год назад

    When are you supposed to press? I just made a lap quilt and never pressed so I'm going to do that before I put the border on. I used 20 strips and stopped when I got to 8 strips wide. Then I cut it into 3 sections 35" each and sewed together. So easy. Thanks for the great video. I am a very novice quilter and was able to finish the top in just a few hours.

    • @ISeeStarsQuilting
      @ISeeStarsQuilting  Год назад +1

      Pressing allows the quilt top to lay flatter on the quilt sandwich. I usually press my jelly roll quilt it at the end to make sure all the seams lay flat before quilting

I made a few jelly roll race quilts a couple of years ago and remember how much fun they are to sew. I'm thinking I could start and end with different lengths of the strips, to offset the seams. I just watched another video on this a few minutes ago, and that person did theirs differently but with the same end result. I like both ways of doing it, so I'm thinking I'll blend the two.

      I have a blog post on doing the quilt match for Jelly Roll quilts - you can read it here: iseestarsquilting.com/jelly-roll-quilt-size-guide/ The "baby" size (32.5″ x 50″) that I have on here is very very close to what you're looking for, you may have to adjust just slightly depending on just how picky your organization is or do a little fun border adding down one side just to bring the width up a little bit. I love that you're working on donation quilts 😘 Please let me know if you have any questions!

    beginner question: Why aren't you back stitching? Also, the presser foot that you're using with the guide on the edge of it, what kind of presser foot is that?

    • @ISeeStarsQuilting
      @ISeeStarsQuilting  2 года назад

      Very good question! For this project - most of the stitching isn't going to endure a lot of tugging or pulling that would make it come apart. Sewing the loooong strips and then cutting them anyways still leaves pieces without secured threads. If you find that your ends start to unravel or come unsewn, try using a shorter stitch length. I usually sew with a 1.8-2 stitch length for stronger seams. It provides more stitch security.
      The foot that I have on my sewing machine is a 1/4" foot. It is a wonderfully handy one to have!

    It took me 4 hours, but even that impressed me 😂 I'm not sure if I like it but I know why. I just ran to the store and the only thing they had were mini jelly rolls so I needed 2, and there was only 10 prints total. Because of the random construction, the prints ended up bunching up in the same areas. I think I still like it though, and I believe if I used a regular size jelly roll with more prints that I would really enjoy the result. Thank you! I'm new here :)
