Hi Christine. I'm Sandy from Idaho. I'm 73 yrs young and I've been quilting for 35+ years. I just watched and subscribed to your channel. I've never made a jelly roll race quilt. After watching your delightful and enthusiastic video I can't wait to make one. I love learning new quilt projects to try. Great job! And thank you. Sandy
There is a Thrift store near me that sells strip of fabric scraps. I choose them 2 1/2" or wider.for $1 a paper grocery bag stuffed full. This would be a great way to make a quilt with them. Super video!
Yay! So glad you'll be joining me for the party! Jelly roll quilts are really great projects and I think sometimes as quilters we tend of overcomplicate things!
This is the easiest looking quilt I've seen, I think even I could do it as a total beginner! I love your relaxed easy going way of explaining things. Thank you so much!
You can absolutely do this as a beginner! I'm hosting another jelly roll party next week. I would love to invite you to hang out with us! Sign up for your free ticket here: stitch.academy/jellyrollrace-7739 🥰🥰
I found this video by accident and now you have me wanting to make my first quilt! I love your presentation and personality which also added to the desire of wanting to follow you. I went out and purchased my first set of jelly rolls. Instinct told me they were very small so I bought three. I was right they were only 20 pieces each. I’m watching the video for a second time before I start to sew. I just realized that I now have to learn how to finish the quilt. It needs a backing LOL so I’m going to hunt down your videos and that’s the next thing I need to learn. Thank you so much, I appreciate you.
I know this video is a year old, but I sure wish I had found it before I made my first jelly roll race quilt. Thank you very much for the concise instructions and images!!
My first one yrs ago didn’t turn out so good, I cut it up and made it into something else 👏🏻. After seeing your video on Saturday, a jelly roll was staring at me on Sunday, so I did it! I threw all the strips in a pile behind me, grabbed without looking, sewed my strips on the diagonal AND I love it! It turned out so good! Thank you for your direction 🌻
Yessss! You can totally do this! This is a great start that isn't a huge time or skill requirement! You're welcome to contact me if you have any questions! www.iseestarsquilting.com
I made a couple of jelly roll quilts for my husband & daughter; they love them. I posted the result on a FB group I'm in. I have NEVER gotten so many comments & likes ever.
I just discovered your channel last night and spent pretty much the whole night binge watching your videos!! I am going to make this jelly roll quilt!!….SOOOOO much easier than some of the other ones that I was looking at. Thanks for the great video.
Hi Peggy! Yes! You can totally do this! :) I have a live video on youtube (well, was live) Called a jelly roll party. You can sew along with me while you work!
I've wanted to make this quilt top for ages and after watching this, I finally made my first one. Thank you for a a very helpful and encouraging video! I'd love to hear your ideas and methods of quilting it, now.
This is so wonderful to hear!! Congratulations on jumping in there and making it! - as far as quilting, I usually just use a meander pattern or figure out a curvy line pattern to contradict all of the straight lines in the jelly rolls. It just adds something a little different to it
I'm so glad you posted this tutorial for the jelly roll race quilt! I'm new to quilting so your "easy to follow steps" are spot on! I made my quilt top overnight using 1 jelly roll of 20 strips, plus I cut the other 20 strips from my fabric stash! This was so fun & effortless...even for this newbie 😊 ❤ So excited for my next quilting adventure!
This is just the help I need to get back to sewing. Things have changed in the past >30 years that I was sewing very little. Thanks for making it simple and beautiful at the same time.
My co-worker got me a huge jelly roll and backing fabric for Christmas this year. She told me about the race quilt as a beginner project. I am so excited to do this.
I have just found your channel and am so happy I did. I am a self taught sewer ans have wanted to do a jelly roll quilt for a while. So easy to understand and I've watched lots of videos.
❤thank you for showing the jelly roll quilt. I used to quilt a lot, then got Covid so I have forgotten most of my quilting. Going to classes now to get my head around quilting again. Thank you for your lovely videos 😊
This just looks so fun! I’m very new to quilting but this I can do. I have some beautiful jelly rolls I wasn’t quite sure yet what I was going to use them for. You just gave me the perfect project for them! So excited to get started.
Ohhhhh girl... you said it perfectly!!! Of course I've always known about the 'race'... but youre right!!! Palate cleanser!!! Ive had health issues and haven't sewn in a bit, and I'm gonna do one as a warm up! Love it and your enthusiasm!
What a fun project. I am going to try this, but I am going to put a little white square between each strip in step one. If I am thinking about this correctly, this would space the little white blocks all over the quilt. Just some added fun. Thanks for the direction!
Yes! I love that idea. I have a few other projects that I wanted to show during the Jelly roll party of some ideas that you can make your unique but definitely the white squares is a great one! It does help to give your eyes continuity to look at all over the quilt!
Wow, I just found your channel & I love love love watching You!! I'm getting ready to start my first quilt, Because of You, Thank You!!😊 I look forward to watching & learning more from you! Please make more videos❤ I love your energy, positive sweet fun attitude!!
Like many, quilts have been in my life forever - my Czechoslovakian grandmother and her adorable old-world toothless quilting bee friends churned out the most amazing heirlooms - we still have many. I'm now 64 and only now have had time (and space) to try my hand at this lifelong desire to make even a modest quilt. Recently I made 2 rag quilts that turned out shockingly amazing and (self-imposed) took a LOT of planning, more than I expected. I'm motivated to progress, but still very much a beginner and that's how I found you. I didn't even know what a jelly roll was - neither did the first place I went (Hobby Lobby), but had success at JoAnn, bought 4 rolls, 2 x $9 and 2 x $35 rolls. Got home, combined a roll and a half, tossed like a salad, closed my eyes to chose next fabric to create the giant long strip*, doubled, doubled, etc and now we have the coolest little random happy quilt top! Took longer than an hour, but the process was quickly gratifying and produced fun results after combining each strip. Thank you for being so cute and thorough with instruction and great editing. Keep it up! You are the first RUclips I've subscribed to :) Best of luck and thank you again for your fun instruction :) * this was as tough as 'you know' it is for some of us, but it was delightfully fun, exciting and freeing to release the control - and good for my mental health at the moment!
Thank you so much for subscribing, for your sweet words and being so uplifting. I love that you have such wonderful quilts with memories, how special!!!
🎉❤🎉OMG. You LITERALLY MADE MY YEAR! Fond8ng ypur channel is a GIFT t9 me for Christmas 😂I wanted to find an easy way to make a quikt for each of my grands. I always loved jelly rolls but couldn't figure out an easy way to get it done. Your approach, your instruction and easy fun demeanor are all bonuses!
I’ve just found your channel and have watched this and your quilt around the world quilt, you make it look so easy and such fun, I have just ordered my first jelly roll 😊
Yay! Congratulations! Thats wonderful! Feel free to reach out to me if you have any questions along the way or if you need any help! I'm cheering you on! 🥳🥳🥳
I am going to make a jelly roll quilt with various black and white fabric designs, and thinking of spacing the strips with a grey, and a white, and a black square. Just contemplating if i put a grey one touching each of the jelly roll strips, so maybe 4 little squares between each strip - a grey, a white, a black, and a grey
This is my very first quilt. I have tried before but I was doing triangles and couldn't get them to stay square, and that was years ago. I also took a regular blanket and used it for batting, a length of fabric that had a steam engine going through the snow and I think 3 or 4 yards of navy blue fabric. I didn't know how to do any quilting and we didn't have RUclips back then. I sewed about 2-foot section at the top of the train material and the rest on the bottom and then pinned it to the blanket and then decided to get more of the blue for the back. It didn't stand up very well because I didn't know how to quilt but my ex loved it at the time. Mine won't look as random as yours because I only have 5 patterns on my strips. I bought mine at Walmart and they came in a bag of 20 strips 2.5"x42. I bought 2 bags that matched. But so far, besides the fact that I wish I had more variation, I am liking how it's going so far. It's definitely helping me learn to sew straight. Thank you so much!!
Im a new member....that saw this tutorial the other day and wrote that I was inspired by great tutorial. I literally just completed my First ever jellyroll quilt because of your lesson. It came out so so good...I sublimated photos on the front to gift to my granddaughter. I wish I could email ya a photo. 😂
I bought a few jelly rolls and I’m about to do my first jelly roll race,I’ve been sewing since I was 7 but quilting has never felt attainable until watching you and a couple other ladies on here!
Because of you and your marvelous videos, I have now bought my machine and all my supplies and I’ve saved a few of your jelly roll videos and this weekend…..I’m going to have fun and make a quilt or two. Thank you for being amazing and taking the time to share your many talents. Your videos are by far my favorites!! ❤️❤️❤️
I just found your tutorials, I know where have I been anyway I’m new at all this my biggest issue right now is I’m afraid open a jelly roll. Thanks 😊 I’m so glad I found your place.
Well!!! I found you not too long ago and you are the best to start out my day with. Your Jelly Roll Race quilt is so colorful and easy to give us a start into quilting. Keep the ideas coming!!
Now I know what to do with the material I kept from my mother “bless her heart” she did love fabric-maybe that’s where I get my love of fabric from❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Great video!!! As a begninner these tutorials are really brilliant! Thank you from Barcelona, It is lovely that you have taken the time to share your knowledge!!
I'm in no way a quilter or sew person but I find your channel to be so relaxing. You're a joy to watch and a natural on camera. Thanks for taking me along. Love from Jersey.
I'm so tickled that my guild is using jelly roll quilts in a couple of different patterns for their charity quilt theme this year. I made a few jelly roll race quilts a couple of years ago and remember how much fun they are to sew. After checking out the guild's link (they used the MSQC video) YT has very kindly offered me all kinds of jelly roll videos and yours is one, yay!
I did a Jello Roll Race Quilt top in a class, at a Quilt Show many years ago. The fabric was already cut into strips; and, it was inside sealed clear plastic bags. You picked out your bag. We were then given instructions. Then the race began. When all my strips were sewed together, I wanted to see how long it was. We were in a very long room with movable walls. My connected strings went all the way across the long end of the room and part way up the wall. There was no way to guess how long the whole string would be; because, some of the strips were cut a little shorter than some of the others; and, no two strips were of the same color or print. Most of us finished at about the same time. However, there were two speed demons in the room. This class was a lot of fun.
I'm about to start my first ever jelly roll quilt because you've inspired me! I'm just not sure about how to finish it....as far as self binding or regular binding or what to put as the backing or if I even need to something in between the quilt and backing? I love your channel you make it so easy to follow along and explain everything so well! You have won me over! Thank you!
Thank you and congratulations on starting your first jelly roll quilt! Hooray! I do have a whole quilting course in my quilt classes stitch.academy I don't have a specific youtube video to point you too but you can find some that go over each step of the quilting process. IF you have any specific questions, you're welcome to email me!
I'm recovering from a shoulder surgery right now but that has been a very popular request lately. I'll see if I can put one together as soon as I'm cleared to begin working like that again 😘
Thank-you very much for sharing. I am very new to quilting. I have made 5 jelly roll Christmas cushions and I have nearly finished a charm pack table runner. Guess what I am going to do next?? Your cool 🎉 quilt. Thank-you. Waving from New Zealand.
You are an amazing teacher, Christen! I love your enthusiasm and warmth! I'm counting the days until October 28 when Quilt Retreat arrives. Can you guess what I'll be sewing on? Yep! Jelly Roll Race...Here I come!
I, too, have wanted to make one of these quilts for ages. I would have attempted it using my own method with no instruction. I'm glad I found your tutorial. At least now I'll be assured that it will turn out without guesswork. Thanks so much.
I am new to quilting. You are so good at explaining everything! I am going to try to get a jelly roll and try this. Thank you for making it look so easy! I just subscribed!!
Oh Thank you. I'm so glad that you found it helpful! I'm hosting another online Jelly Roll party. You should join me! It's free and I would love to have you! stitch.academy/jellyrollrace-7739
I've often thought of making one of these, but I never have. Yours is the best tutorial I've seen on the jelly roll race, and what a GREAT idea to use it for the back - I never thought of that!!
@@ISeeStarsQuilting Christen, I'm fairly new to your channel, so I've been catching up on your videos. I just wanted to say how much I enjoy them, and your enthusiasm and joy of quilting really comes through, which in turn makes them a joy to watch!
A really comprehensive tutorial on the jelly roll race quilt. I haven’t made one yet, but I won a jelly roll with red and green strips that someone had made. I may add more colorful strips to it and try this method. I haven’t known what to do with it. I really liked your suggestion on using these for the back of quilts as well as the front. Thanks for this tutorial. I just found your page.
I am a self taught sewer who has a very, very basic Brother mechanical sewing machine. Thanks to you, I was able to make a jelly roll race quilt top and to my great surprise, it turned out beautifully. Now comes the hard part... quilting it. 😰 Think I need to upgrade my machine first! Thanks for your easy to follow video!
Just found your channel. This was so informative and it looks so easy. I have a half jelly roll from Joann’s (20 strips) of bright, cheerful florals in 10 different fabrics with red, black, pink, aqua, and purple. I shopped my stash to add 10 more fabrics to coordinate so it’s not too repetitive. Can’t wait to start in on it.
It took me 4 hours, but even that impressed me 😂 I'm not sure if I like it but I know why. I just ran to the store and the only thing they had were mini jelly rolls so I needed 2, and there was only 10 prints total. Because of the random construction, the prints ended up bunching up in the same areas. I think I still like it though, and I believe if I used a regular size jelly roll with more prints that I would really enjoy the result. Thank you! I'm new here :)
Brooke, I'm so glad you gave it a try anyways! Yes, having a bigger selection of fabrics does help... but even if you're not in LOVE with it for a quilt top, you could totally use it for a backing! If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out :)
Omg!! I did this as my first quilt top ever TODAY out of 3 half jelly rolls from Dollar Tree. My husband has requested a king size 😂
I guess it's official then - you are a quilter!!! 🤩🤩🤩 Congratulations on your quilt top!
Dollar Tree sells jelly rolls ? I wish mine did.
@@utubeuser775I don't think I've ever seen them things at my Dollar tree or anywhere either

What a delightful thrift store you have!
I did this as one of my first quilts! Someone suggested to cut the jelly roll strips in half first so it scattered the colors more. So easy and fun!
I'm so glad you are pleased with how yours turned out! 🥳🥳
I also cut some of the printed strips and added White Kona cotton 2,5 " occasionally. Came out nice.
Finally someone who shows and tells at the same time and explains everything clearly. Great work! I am sub-ing.

Awesome! It's such a fun project!
Yay for RUclips for suggesting my video and thank you for watching 😘😘 Have fun with your Jelly roll Projects!
OH my goodness that sounds like a blast. I would love to do that.
I must say, stumbled upon this channel and you are just fabulous!!!! Thank you so much!

Thanks. That was very clear and helpful! I’d love a video on putting the backing on 👍🏻
I'm recovering from a shoulder surgery right now but that has been a very popular request lately.

I, too, have wanted to make one of these quilts for ages. I would have attempted it using my own method with no instruction. I'm glad I found your tutorial. At least now I'll be assured that it will turn out without guesswork. Thanks so much.
You should absolutely make one! Sometimes just getting started is half the battle :)
I love how easy you made the process

I've often thought of making one of these, but I never have. Yours is the best tutorial I've seen on the jelly roll race, and what a GREAT idea to use it for the back - I never thought of that!!
You totally should make one! It's so fun and so satisfying to see it come together so quickly!! 🥰
@@ISeeStarsQuilting Christen, I'm fairly new to your channel, so I've been catching up on your videos. I just wanted to say how much I enjoy them, and your enthusiasm and joy of quilting really comes through, which in turn makes them a joy to watch!
love ur down 2 earth teachings [sewing ways] ty
Thank you so much for watching! 😘😘
You are so welcome Marcie. That is so great to hear you were able to make your quilt and I am so so glad you loved it. That makes my day!
Thank you for this excellent tutorial! Very beginner friendly!
Glad it was helpful!
I've never even heard of a jelly roll.......🎉❤
Just found your channel. This was so informative and it looks so easy. I have a half jelly roll from Joann’s (20 strips) of bright, cheerful florals in 10 different fabrics with red, black, pink, aqua, and purple. I shopped my stash to add 10 more fabrics to coordinate so it’s not too repetitive. Can’t wait to start in on it.
That is so amazing! Yes! I love making my own additions to a jelly roll quilt too!
@@ISeeStarsQuilting thank you!! I still think I'm going to quilt it 😁
You're to much fun Ty !! I did do a small jelly roll.... made a tiny baby blanket but learned alot. Ty
