  • Rattlegram is a free smartphone app where you can send text messages over radio, independent of the mobile phone network. All you need is an FM transceiver, mobile phone and the app. In this video I give it a try.

One of the things I like is that it can work over any radio system not just ham radio.

I wonder whether it culd work over those old handy talkies?.....like meshtastic but old school

The "strong protection" doesn't refer to encryption or scrambling, it is just the amount of parity that is included. A shorter message contains more parity data and thus more corrupted bits can be corrected.

Thanks for showing me another text message system. I am currently waiting for a small Mestastick (spelling) boards for the license free system in either 800 MHZ or 980 MHZ even 433 MHz, will know more when I receive equipment.

Great video Peter. I made one a bit back, showing it over non licensed US bands.
Their goal of emergency response comms is growing. The non emergency uses are as well.

This reminded me of my playing around with packet radio years ago. Electronics Australia had a lengthy article by a ham from Tasmania. I can't remember his name, but I still have the magazine. It was about a packet radio modem kit he had produced and was selling. I bought one. Assembled on the board it was about half the size of a cigarette pack. It had a connector on one end of the rectangular size board that plugged into the serial port of a desktop or laptop. It was the small size serial port, and it drew it's power from there. A ham building this could be completely portable. The article had photo's of him outdoors high up somewhere with packet decoded on the screen. The project was also aimed at non hams too. To just listen in. Packet was in its heyday. In the article he talked about the Baycom software that would come with the kit. When the kit came through, it had different software. From Germany I think. Baycom had asked him to stop sending out their software with his kit. They apparently made a similar packet modem kit. The ham from Tasmania explained all this, and said there's nothing stopping you downloading Baycom. It was freely available. I did. This was from a BBS.
Would you believe, it was years before I ever got that modem working. Using my scanner I would hear the packet on the 2 metre ham band, but I never got anything on the screen. I checked that board over so many times. I didn't know if it was the modem, the software, or maybe the quality of the packet audio. Years later when there was software to work with a soundcard for packet, I made some recordings of text messages in packet. I had that on an MP3 player and going to the modem. I had Baycom running on the desktop. I had the player repeating, but nothing on the screen. The kit has two little potentiometers needing a philip screwdriver to adjust. As I turned one the text appeared on the screen and kept repeating. I sat looking at it in amazement. There was nothing wrong with it all along. All those years of it being kept in a safe place, and looked at occasionally. It turned out the other potentiometer adjustment wasn't critical. The one that was, needed to be within quarter of a turn. I never did go back to the article to see what was written about that. I would go on to do a fair bit with that modem on a laptop, running DOS from the smaller size floppy and the Baycom software. I would run packet BBS software on a desktop with a soundcard. I did longer range experiments using two cheap UHF CB handhelds. I also tried setting up a short range BBS I could log into and transfer files. Using a couple of low power FM transmitters I built, and a couple if cheap transistor radio. The transmitters would be sending a carrier all the time, and on different frequencies. So no fast switching was required. It worked, but was all a bit flaky and I eventually moved on to something else.

👍Thanks for video Peter. I didn't know about Rattlegram. It reminds me of Digital Radio Mondiale and programs such as EasyPal. Of course Rattlegram is providing text only function. I wonder if people have been using this on HF and how it compares to other HF digi modes.

What about using a cable from the sound output of the radio to the mic input of the phone, resulting in a much clearer pickup of the sound by the app?

It's very cool, and I downloaded and tested the app. But I'm having a hard time imagining a use case for it. If you can hear my radio, I'll just talk, not text.

After watching your video I’ve tried sending Rattlegram. If I play the message over the computer speakers and have the smartphone listening in the room I get 100% decodes. But if I send the audio via 2m FM the received audio sounds distorted and I get almost 0% decodes. I’ve tried altering the audio levels, always sounds distorted over the air. More investigations needed!

Thanks for this. Very interesting app which reminds me of one of my uni projects where I was using MATLAB and Gnu Radio Companion to send and receive data, music and pictures using ofdm and other modulation schemes . I think it will open up excellent ideas for students to play around with, Will bedoing so myself too.

It's interesting, but I'm not sure about the "why" of this.
If the application is doing a text broadcast, then why wouldn't you just use straight RTTY?
If the application is point to point messaging, why not use WinLink or APRS messaging?
If the application is beaconing, why not use APRS or FT8?
What's the problem that Rattlegram is trying to solve that we don't already have a solution for?

I was wondering the same thing. I am going to install on an old phone then put both in airplane mode and disable Wi-Fi. Im assuming the app contains the programming needed to decode some simple audio sounds

    • @edahan
      @edahan 5 месяцев назад +3

it just sends the data into an audio stream on the speaker. So you can simply place your phones speaker on your HT MIC ..hit PTT and SEND at the same time. Very easy.

I found that both radios must be on the same settings either wide band or narrow band audio settings for this to work properly.

Of course, if you're using a repeater, get the control ops permission.

  • @w8lvradio

It looks really really good. But I'm not certain that it's permitted by US or Canadian regs. By the way, I did try Vegemite on a whim as a solder paste, that didn't go well. I also tried Vaseline, that went better. Not as good as real Rosin flux though. The Vegemite is conductive. I think that it's good to have alternatives when it comes to chemicals. And? Rosin really irritates my eyes. Am I the only one? I also use "brakekleen" to clean boards, my guess it's it not the best thing environmentally though.. How to make boards and processes as green as possible is a challenge. 73 DE W8LV BILL

    Interesting.
I suspect that in utrasonic mode you could converse with another who was in range such as another in a room full of people while being off the cellular network and without anyone hearing a sound.
This opens up new oppertunities for cheating the Casino out of cheating you via their connstructing the game with engineered odds that are regardless of the player's scheme.
It will be interesting to someday know if this was tried... but no, I am not interested, because its too dangerous to try where I am well past tempting fate.
