    I'd say the only good things about this movie are how it handled the "Steamies" vs Diesels conflict a lot better than in later seasons and movies, and the scenes where the bridge collapse and the "Steamies" and Diesels fight each other. That was clear proof that the crew were having fun torturing their own models.

      Though I am not too surprised Michael Brandon did not get to narrate that part. Probably HiT did not have enough time to count it as a deleted scene for the US just like the other two scenes for the UK DVD. If anything, I really do not get why that deleted scene was not dubbed. Maybe kids or parents from the US would not like it if they see a destroyed windmill onscreen. Kind of understandable? But I remember watching that deleted scene on RUclips as a kid, and even I did not act like a major wuss about it.

    Watching this review made me realize, the best scenes in the movie (the dreams of what would happen to the engines without the railway, and the Lady - Rusty scene) are the ones that aren't actually real. I guess that goes to show how boring the special is when the dream scenes are the most interesting ones.

    This review was actually really good. You are right and you do have a few good points. To me, Calling all Engines is nostalgic, but it’s kind of a mixed bag, you’ll get some good or bad stuff with it. The learning segments are pointless and should've been added as bonus features like The Great Discovery. If they kept the deleted scene with the windmill and the dream song then they definitely would’ve taken advantage of the runtime. And Jakey was right, if Britt and David, heck if Andrew Brenner wrote this special it would’ve been better and would’ve been a great substitute for Magic Railroad. If this movie was consistent with the Steamies vs Diesels trope and stuck with it to where all Steamies and Diesels are nice to each other, then it would’ve been decent. But that’s the problem, none of the character arcs stick. All in all, Calling all Engines is a mixed bag. You’ll get some good stuff, but you’ll also get some bad stuff as well. This could be enjoyed on a toddler level, but not on a teenager or adult level. It’s not terrible by any means and it’s definitely not the best, it’s just mediocre. I can’t wait till you get to The Great Discovery, to me, it’s the better model series special, despite it being written by Sharon Miller, but it’s still a fun watch and has some unique and fast paced scenes, but I shouldn’t say too much about it, you just need to rewatch it. But, have a happy new year and I can’t wait to see what’s in store for 2022.

      Well, the rivalry is a great part of the show so it's fine in the film. Also, evil is part of Diesel 10's character as a villain which should be kept in the TV show' canon regardless of Magic Railroad non canon. At least the film shows how Emily becomes part of the Steam Team and lives at Tidmouth Sheds. Even if Britt, Andrew and David wrote Calling All Engines, they would still created Diesel 10 to be a evil diesel villain with plans to take over Sodor and get rid of steam engines whom he loathes.

    • @jordenfilmz
      @jordenfilmz 2 года назад

      @@DavidBContentExtravaganza3967 Yeah true. I know they would keep Diesel 10 as a villain because he's supposed to be intimidating. Yeah, Calling All Engines is kinda fun to watch, but it's fun to also make fun of it because there could be many things they could've improved on. Yeah, seeing the rivalry between the steamies and the diesels is fun, but nowadays it's getting clique and overused. But bottom line, Calling All Engines is a fun watch, but it's not the strongest special and the characters or both Michaels couldn't save it. But it's an ok movie and has a good moral. Overall, it gets a C-.

      I actually agree with them cutting it out. Obviously it's a powerful narrative device, but seeing that scene for the first time sorta made my heart drop, and I can imagine it could've been a bit unsettling for the kids watching, especially the age range this is aimed at.
      To note, this is not me saying children should be talked down to. I just think that the windmill scene sorta clashed with the tone of the rest of the movie and thus would've felt more jarring. This is different than the dragon float in Thomas and the Chinese dragon, for example, which has sort of a creepy vibe to the entire episode.

    10:31 This scene is brilliant. I think it also fits with the current state of the Thomas franchise now. The windmill is broke. It’s fixable, but it’s going to take a real effort to do it. @@TheTimurdempire Facepalm. Let me explain it. Both Elmo's World: The Street We Live on and Calling All Engines were both specials that celebrated their respective franchises anniversaries. The former to celebrate Sesame Street's 35th Anniversary and the latter to celebrate Thomas' 60th Anniversary. Both of them were of course really poor attempts at celebrating their respective franchises anniversaries HOWEVER the former special celebrates Sesame Street's anniversary more than the latter special did for Thomas. Since despite the fact that the former is basically a hour long Elmo's World episode, it pays more respect to Sesame Street's History than CAE did for Thomas. Since the special adds in Classic moments or sketches from the shows' early years. Alongside it they also add in two timelines in the special that each highlight Sesame Street's BIGGEST events. The first timeline when Elmo and Grover drive a Taxi back in time to a couple of moments from the show's history follow by Another timeline that plays at the end credits in which it's absent in the home video version and so you have to watch the broadcast version to see it for yourself.

      Now to the topic that I'm very fascinated to talk about the furry red monster himself Elmo one of Sesame Street's most controversial and Divisive Characters. As you don't know I grew up with Elmo since I was little alongside watching A LOT of the original Elmo's World. However little did I know that the furry red monster himself is one of the most hated, controversial, and most divided Sesame Street Characters in the show's history and I REALLY mean it. Some people absolutely love him (like me) or they absolutely HATE HIM. The reason for the hate against Elmo is because of the exact same reason that both Barney and the Teletubbies for the same reason Overexposure and that all started with the ever so infamous craze in 1996 with a toy called Tickle Me Elmo. Due to the toy becoming a massive Phenomenon it lead to Elmo getting WAY to overexposed, alongside it Elmo got two segments dedicated to him. Elmo's World and Elmo the Musical, along with him getting his own movie, The Adventures of Elmo in Grouchland. Due to all things I mentioned it caused a lot of people to HATE the furry red monster, not only all of things I mentioned but also he was taking WAY to much screen time from the other characters on Sesame Street and even calling him names like The Little Red Menace and the Scrappy Doo of Sesame Street. Down to the point that some people also went as far as to saying that he killed Sesame Street and even go as far as to say that Elmo Killed any educational values that Sesame Street had. And after learning all of that it really and I mean REALLY broke my heart that a character that I ever loved so dearly when I was a child the most divisive (if not the most hated) character from Sesame Street. Especially how that again he WAS my childhood character alongside Thomas and Bear from Bear in the Big Blue House. I think that just like Hit Entertainment on what they did with Thomas during there time people should MASSIVELY blame Sesame Workshop overexposing Elmo and NOT the character himself because it's Sesame Workshop that should be blame. Seriously if we can blame Hit Entertainment, Mattel and Disney for their Stupid decisions they make then we should blame Sesame Workshop as well since it's THEIR FAULT.

    The diesels vs steamies conflict was so much more serious up to Thomas And The Magic Railroad. The diesels were murderous and sadistic: Diesel, the diesels on the other railway (British Rail), Class 40, Arry and Bert, Dodge and Splatter and especially Diesel 10. They seriously want to rid the World's railways of the out of date kettles. But from Season 6 onwards they're just portrayed as regular bullies and it just has a more downgraded and dull vibe to it. And I agree with the HiT era as a whole being dull. All of it is still better than BWBA though. But it is still a rough patch. All episodes feel the same. "It was a sunny day on the Island of Sodor and all the engines were working hard.", a character is given a job, screws up three times before realising their mistake, puffs their way through the trees and grass on the railway carved through it, gets their job done in the end and everyone ends up happy. Rinse, repeat, **yawn.**
    Compare this to the classic era. "Thomas was waiting at a junction when a bus arrived." "Gordon was feeling grumpy. This was making James cross." "The little engines were busy clearing their railway of leaves and broken branches."
    "Diesels never gallabant off to breakfast in stationmaster's houses." "NOOOOooooOOOOO!! I'm asleep!!! And he opened his eyes just to make sure they were still there." "So I did help. But, by accident you might say." "I wonder if Rusty is right. Don't you?"
    Look at how creative and different these openings and endings are from each other. A lot of the stories begin right in the middle of the action that will continue throughout the episode and some episodes are cleverly left inconclusive and are very different in tone from one another. We aren't even told if the ghost engine Duncan saw was real or not and it's left for us to decide and a lot of them go much more in depth with different emotions and intentions of the characters than just wanting to be really useful. There are very few if any, times in the HiT era where the whole story evolves around a character plotting revenge on another or where any major worldbuilding is done like Kirkronan station or an engine being rescued from being scrapped by scary diesels. The era feels mostly the same with tone, payoffs and plot. This makes the era a slog to sit through.

It's still a dull movie, but it still has some good things about it and it does have nostalgia, 3.5/10. 1 point for the Bridge collapsing, 1 point for the Steamies and Diesels conflict being well here, (especially the fight scene, the songs and the working together scene to get the runway and airport completed), 1 point for the Good bonus features on on DVD, half a point for the CAE Engine roll call, the return of Diesels 10, Lady, Derek,, and Rusty's Season 4 Model. Without a doubt, I would rather watch this rather than Misty Island! This is way better than Misty Island!

The special itself is mid but the Original and Lionsgate DVD releases have amazing bonus features including deleted scenes. The Universal Reprint removes all of that and all of the cool bells and whistles that the DVD had. The Universal Reprint only has 3 major menus, all still images (the animated cutscenes were removed in the Universal reprint) with music playing. The Universal Reprint is just awful. If anyone wants Calling All Engines on DVD, I suggest an earlier release because the Universal one is just streaming with extra steps.

    Diesel 10 should've never been shown with a normal "passive" smile.
    Also, for anyone watching this before Magic Railroad, they would've had no idea who Diesel 10 is or what he's done in the past. This man did NOT need redemption, he was a psychopathic criminal with a murderous mentality and should've been kept as such. For the entire movie since his arrival he terrified the other engines and almost scrapped James by making him back up beyond the buffers in the smelters shed.
    This movie was the first blow to changing his character and the CGI series just hammered the nail further into the coffin. As someone who grew up on the model series and with that objectively "bad" movie, I would've much preferred to see Diesel 10 keep his demonic gremlin status and be a constant, if minor, threat to the main cast.
    Diesel 10 almost KILLED Mr. Conductor and Junior, two human characters from the movie, but in the CGI series he cowers like a toddler when confronted by Sir Topham Hatt like he couldn't just grab and throw him like everyone else or force his authority onto the others. Diesel 10 was and IS a menace and depicting him as anything but is a disgrace to his villainous title. His motive for helping the others repair the island and the airport should've had an ulterior motive like:
    MWAH HA HA! By the time I'm finished showing up these old kettles, the holiday makers will finally see diesel engines as the premier engine and finally scrap these old tin pots in favor of others like me. It's only a matter of time.

    • @darkstone_official_2427
      @darkstone_official_2427 4 месяца назад

      The Diesel 10 retcon should've never happened. They should've given him some actual backstory. If they intended to ruin his character from Magic Railroad they should've at LEAST gave us a brief flashback as to why he's back again. A possible idea:
      Narrator: Diesel 10 was a big, mean, and strong engine who came to the island a long time ago. Back then he was the rudest and most vile of them all but was humbled before being sent away. Due to the increased workload Sir Topham Hatt gave him another chance to prove himself by clearing away scrap in the junk yards. Though still quite rude and grumpy he's learned to be more approachable and cooperative. But Thomas and Percy didn't know this and they ran off, shaking in fear.

      @bradleyhauertheedtruncanfa5020 2 месяца назад

      Well I have a theory that changes that.
      Diesel 10 only agreed to help so that, offscreen, he could use Pinchy to destroy that plane filled with passengers along with everyone on that plane, causing him to get exiled and sent to the Dieselworks for committing mass murder, which set the events for Day of the Diesels.

    • @darkstone_official_2427
      @darkstone_official_2427 2 месяца назад

      @@bradleyhauertheedtruncanfa5020 Someone actually came up with a little like headcanon episode or something that filled in that retcon of why he was so helpful in Calling all Engines.
      In the fanon episode it happens shortly after the events of The Magic Railroad when Sir Topham Hatt gets back from his vacation and sees Diesel 10 being mended at the works.
      He scolds him obviously but since his fall was so drastic and life threatening (at least for a train in this episode) he had lost his memory after suffering such extensive damage and couldn't recall much of his past as an evil diesel.
      He then spends a long time getting hateful glares and words spit at him from the other engines and is dumbfounded as to why. That's about where it ended for the time being if memory servers ME correctly, but I feel like if that story was expanded at all beyond that it would have him slowly gaining their trust or finding out what he had done previously and being sickened by his past actions.
      Sometimes a good bout of amnesia is a really good helper for changing a person. Once they've lost all that previous prejudice and bias they see with a clearer mind and realize how gross or appalling it was and change. Unless of course they're just built evil from the beginning and go right back to being a sadistic prick from the start, memory or not.
