Oh happy days. This franchise had toys that warped my imagination. I basically started at the bottom and worked my way up. I had ERTL, that was probably my starting point, I had the Wooden set (I even remember breaking the cab on Gordon when I accidentally dropped him from a balcony), I even had those TOMY toys that barely looked like the characters, especially in the wheel department. Then I went Hornby and Bachmann and never went back. The ERTL and Wooden stuff were out the door by 2006 I think. They were under the bed, just gathering dust, then they said I could donate them to the local charity shop, and I gave them up. I was done with them at that point.
Actually, I may have talked about it in a video at one point, but the coolest thing I remember seeing when I was young was a jigsaw puzzle my primary school had. It was a giant puzzle of The Railway Series. It had, I believe, the first 8 book covers as the image. That may actually have been my introduction to the books. Absolutely loved it, although to be fair, I was 5 years old at the time... I remember this vividly. First time I found the puzzle, there was a piece missing from James' segment. I tore apart the classroom to find that last bit, and I remember being overjoyed when James was no longer missing a part of his boiler 🤣

The Hornby models definitely give off a very RWS vibe, and that's why Hornby has become one of my favourite Thomas merch lines. They are good runners, providing you don't make the mistake I made when I was 5 and get the mechanisms clogged with carpet fuzz.

Finally. Take Along (and Take n' Play) get the recognition they deserve. I had like, three different versions of the Die-Cast James' growing up (cuz I kept losing him). The die casts are definitely my bread and butter when it comes to collecting. I do think the best ERTL toys ever were the diesels and road vehicles (EVERY single ERTL diesel loco slapped, except Diesel 10, I guess) so I like to collect ERTL Diesels, Road Vehicles, and rolling stock alongside Take Along's steam locomotives. If only I could find ERTL Bear and Salty, my life could be complete...

2 other things I hate about Trackmaster Revolution besides the removal of the free-railing are:
      1. The spiky wheels. If the engine is still powered on, a little kid could put that in a dangerous area like their lips (this 100% never happened to me), or um... *other* areas.
      2. The body mold proportions... Good lord, where do I begin? I feel like some of the most painful examples are Edward, Gordon and Henry. Edward got chopped 'n' screwed so bad, he got turned into an 0-6-0 with a "leading wheel" molded to his running board so now he looks like a fake 'Mogul', Gordon looks like an ACTUAL sausage, and Henry looks like a rejected prototype of BCE. Plus, everyone is just so... FAT.

  • @WiiMan25
    @WiiMan25 Год назад +1

As a late 90s era Thomas kid, ERTL was my main toyline, but I also had some Wooden Railway and a single Plarail set: A Thomas, Annie, and Clarabel set, which I still have.
If I wanted to just play Thomas, I would play ERTL. But I could easily crossover Wooden Railway with my other wooden trains like Brio, and I also had some non-Thomas Plarail like Japanese bullet trains, which I'd cross them over with. I guess Thomas decided to go to Japan or something.
I loved ERTL because I thought they looked the best and most accurate at the time. Even my dad genuinely loved their aesthetic, and when he'd buy them for me, it really felt like he was enjoying the toy hunt as much as I was. But in retrospect, their wheels felt flimsy, their paint chipped easily, and their couplers were crap and broke easily. I still have my entire childhood collection, but a good chunk of them have broken or decayed couplers, and my Douglas has been missing a tender wheel since I was a kid.
Wooden Railway was the easiest to find and the most versatile, so I liked it a lot too. My favorite was the Flying Scotsman and his two tenders. I don't have these anymore, though, I gave them away to my dad's friend's son years ago. I hope he enjoyed them.
As a current collector/enjoyer/appreciator of Japanese toys (mainly action figures, though), I actually appreciate Plarail more now than I did as a kid. As a kid, I did like my Plarail but I felt they looked a bit kiddie and off compared to the others, so I never went out of my way for them.
After I outgrew Thomas, I was out with the family and we came across some Take Along in a store. I remember my dad actually lamenting that the designs, molds, proportions, etc. were no longer on the same realistic level as ERTL, and called them something along the lines of "those ugly babies".
Now, I don't care to collect Thomas generally, but I've seen Minis in stores and have been tempted to collect them. I get that they just sort of exist, but I see charm in them, and might start doing just that.

This video was great, I laughed at Jakey’s part, but he does make a few points. But I love this video. Definitely a great video because this is what Thomas was kinda known for. I for sure agree with your number one, Tomy/Plarail/trackmaster. They are definitely iconic and bring the magic of the show to life with the accuracy of the faces and bodies and the fact they can move on their own with the help of a battery and a switch *insert Nintendo Switch click here* is certainly a smart and a commendable one. It’s sad that the quality Thomas toys took a major drop, with the exception of 2022 Wooden Railway. We’ll possibly never have a great Thomas toy line ever again, but OMG when 90s and the 2000s came around, haha what a time for Thomas and his fans. As those two decades were the best years for Thomas merchandise, and we’ll always remember the glory days of Thomas merchandise.

If you say take along is a very good range, i agree with you, here are my reasons:
    1. Closed wheels; they sound good on touch (even if early take n play characters have them, the sounds of touching them are not as good)
    2. Character faces; all of them refer to the model series faces (i think)
    3. The cubic magnets; they take less space
    4. Character cards, i dont know why
    5. Wheels from some characters, notably the wheel color, such as duncan's white wheels
    6. Faces for characters like donald and douglas are just AMAZING
    7. Metallic characters, there shouldve been a metallic donald and douglas
    8. Varieties of characters; Splatter, Dodge Victor, Boco and Bertram shouldve existed
But i will still stay with any good opinion i have; my favortie type of merch is the motorized characters

I can hardly agree with all of this. I super love classic tomy/hit/Trackmaster toys, wooden railway, take a long/play, they're my favorite merchandise that I grew up with, and yes I remember playing that Thomas and friends website long time ago as a kid

For trackmaster push along, they should’ve made the narrow gauge engines
Enlarge them a little cause they’ll still be scale to the trackmaster trains

I owned Golden Bear, Brio and Ertl ones. Never knew about the talking Golden Bear ones until later, but I remember being upset that James's wheels weren't black that I actually colored them black with a sharpie. Ertl ones couldn't even turn properly as they were all rigid and didn't have any moving side rods. I had the old Brio, the ones with the more spoked wheels. Had quite a few of them too. I also had two giant ones where in Percy you could put shapes in the top and the eyes moved as the toy was pushed. Thomas came with Annie and Clarabel where you could remove the coach roofs and put things inside.

The best era of Thomas & Friends toys is the 2000s to early 2010s. The mid 2010s is when the brand begins to crumble.

Also I adore Tomy/Plarail/Hit Toys to the max, especially with their massive variety of characters and rolling stock. Although the flaws without a doubt are that most of the engines don't have a front coupling which is obviously noticeable, and whenever they do have a front coupling it just mostly the Ringing in Tekero models also made by Plarail, however they made one exception with the motorized Thomas which managed to have a front coupling and not only that but had the ability to move backwards and forwards, which that Thomas was released to co-inside the movie we don't talk about for good reasons. Anyways the set is the search and rescue set from Plarail which this exclusive Thomas was released in, however as of now it's pretty hard to obtain especially for a reasonable price due to how rare it is and also because of the fact it's the only time they ever released a motorized engine with not only a front coupling but also has a backwards forwards feature hence it makes that Thomas famous for what it is and hopefully I can get it one day if I do get lucky, but that won't be for god knows how long so yeah, that's one of the flaws, I apologize if this is too long but you get the idea. Anyways my other flaw with this range is how the way they released most twin characters, mainly of how Tomy did it, like for instance they make the first twin easily obtainable for a good price but make the other only exlusive in 1 set in Japan and nowadays will cost you a lot in the aftermarket, so yeah it's just rather frustrating but thankfully I managed to get lucky ordering a Tomy Douglas for a good price a while back and he was in near mint condition so yeah that is neat, but I still need to get Tomy Bill because he is on the same category as Douglas, like granted they were finally released in 2006 though via the Motor Road and Rail Range (both in the UK and US wise) 8 years after Donald and 5 years after Ben, yeah pretty ridiculous but otherwise though solid twin characters. So yeah those are my main gripes but other than that Tomy still did well in nearly every area imaginable but nowadays they are just kinda slumping but oh well just is what it is so yeah, with that being said this is my ted talk and me signing out.
