IT’S ALL NEW THOMAS AT ACTION CANYON!
Jokes aside, this is a great review. You and Jay are pretty funny, you two don’t choose to be funny at the wrong time, you two instead made pure comedy gold, I love it! We need more reviews like this!
This movie is a bit underrated, every engine is in their most matured forms except Thomas and it truly does feel like a Finale, the narration is perfect and Pierce Brosnan does a spectacular job at voicing for all the characters, and even though it uses a trope used in a lot of Thomas movies i think it works here, the music is some of the best in the Hit Era and it all feels like it’s big movie for Thomas The Tank Engine! Sure it does use the same intro and doesn’t do anything too big but it adds to the movie being about a show about a Railway about Steam Engines and because of that it’s my favorite Thomas movie!
Thomas You’re The Leader is a bop. Change my mind.
I cry when I hear that song 😭
I can't
YES, IT IS GOOD, AND I'M TIRED OF PRETENDING IT'S NOT!
Tru
For some reason, the line: “…and he felt he was no longer wanted”, really hit hard for me.
My brother loved this as a kid and I sorta did too. The hit era was in its boom when I was little so naturally I watched the Great Discovery a lot. Since I’ve become a Bond fan in recent years, hearing Brosnan’s narration feels strange but oddly soothing. I loved the sets for the mine and Great Waterton (specifically the tower) and the sequences of various characters passing on a message to each other felt so grand and satisfying.
Glad I’m not the only one who actually likes the engine rollcall. I heard it just as much as the main theme as a kid and it’s engrained in memory.
The Great Discovery is a masterpiece. It's not an easy job to write a finale as good as Miller did, considering it was her first special was a writer. But man, they got it totally right. All of the characters are in their true personas, the sets are gorgeous, the soundtrack is excellent and of course, I love the narration from Pierce Brosnan.
I do like all of the songs too. Especially Thomas You're the Leader. For a finale to the model era, this was a damn good one and easily The Great Discovery is one of my favorite Thomas movies
The Great Discovery is one of my favorite Thomas movies growing up
Me too
I..... love The Great Discovery. This film was definitely an improvement over Calling All Engines! hands down.
Pierce Brosnan's narration was really good and was definitely a nice change from Angelis' downgraded narration (even though he was decent at best).
The songs were nice and catchy. And do I even need to say anything about Thomas, You're the Leader? I don't. Other than it's a masterpiece of a song. Yes, even more than Mike and Junior's songs.
And I guess you can....... WELCOME, STANLEY!!!
So in my opinion, this film is amazing and it gets a 9 out of 10.
Yeah
10/10 for me as I have the dvd version of the movie
It's my favourite Thomas film
I adore the Great Discovery, it is my favorite special of the franchise, the visuals, the music, the sets, the overall story, the songs, thomas’ character arc, Pirce Brosnans decent performance, as the unlucky tug said, this really feels like a finale to the model series, they had the overt unity too slap this in and then called it a day, but no, they toke this as a opertunity to expane the island of sodor even though it was at the very end, I also love it’s huge variety of characters, it has potential of some unique character interactions, my only gripe is the scene where Stanley passes Thomas with a big smile on his face, but that’s it, I don’t hate anything else about this movie, it really feels like a finale, they really should have ended the model series here and made season 12 full cgi
I grew up with The Great Discovery.
I personally think that it’s a GREAT closeup to the model era (1984-2008). The narration from Pierce Brosnan (James Bond HIMSELF) is pretty decent. Not the best, but is better than Michael Brandon (he SUCKS at narration in the HiT era), but NO WHERE better than Michael Angelis.
The writing of the film, being by Sharon Miller, is absolutely awesome! It’s perfectly executed and it’s NOT poorly executed unlike other Thomas films.
Being the final film after the model/CGI hybrid (by Nitrogen Studios; it’s DATED AF), it’s really good for a sendoff to the model series.
Great Waterton as part of worldbuilding is really good, though not completely necessary, as the model era was ABOUT to end after the film.
The songs SLAP HARD. “Thomas and James Are Racing” is an upbeat song for the beginning of the film, and “Jobs A Plenty” is also a bop as a symbol of worldbuilding. The Engine Roll Call addition with Stanley is not gonna grow on me. The original Roll Call is the nostalgia for me.
Stanley himself. Oh, geez. He’s kind of a standout engine in the film, but Thomas has a rivalry with him. Thomas thinks that Stanley is to be friends with the other engines, e.g. Percy and James, and to make Thomas not appeal to the other engines.
Overall, it’s a GREAT film. A great film. It’s not the best film, unlike Hero of the Rails (aka the movie before Season 13, a shit season). Brosnan’s narration is okay, though it is not that good. As I said already, it’s decent.
Overall rating: 7/10
Hero of the rails is incredible I’m glad someone else agrees I feel like mark morghan would be a better Us narrator though.
Season 13 was incredible too.
@@noahsalsberg9915 Season 13 blows balls actually
Michael Angelis was mid in the HiT Era. Not as bad as Michael Brandon, but still pretty bad.
Thomas' final line at the end "Leader of The Track" was going to be the tittle but was changed during production.
Tittle? You mean that lil dot atop the lowercase j and i?
Does anyone know why they changed it
I can't help but go in hysterics at some parts of this video, especially when you and Jakey we're shouting about Thomas in the Sodor Island intro, and how you played in denial about Seasons 8-24 existing (even though I can tell that was just a joke). 😆
Oh my god, I freaking LOVE this special! From the narration, to the music, to the songs, to "THE ACTION!", this special hits so hard! But honestly, the part that hits the most hard, is the very end with the "Leader of The Track" line, the roll call, and then Thomas, You're the Leader. I swear every single time that song comes on, I get goosebumps and I start tearing up cuz GOOD LORD this special brings back so many memories!
This is a great way to send off the models in my humble opinion. Plus, it closes perfectly with the song “Thomas, You’re the Leader”.
6:10 my headcanon is that the bridge and tracks is getting upgrade overtime because idk
Imo The Great Discovery is the best model series special and it’s very nostalgic. I had a great time watching it and getting the Action Canyon. And I agree, that the movie has flaws, but doesn’t almost every movie have flaws, but the good outshines the bad. It’s definitely a huge improvement over Calling All Engines and I give it a pass, especially for not having pointless learning segments in the middle of the special to drag it down further and it pays an homage to Classic Series Thomas with its characters and scenery. The Great Discovery is a love letter to model series Thomas and it marked the end of an era to Thomas The Tank Engine, it holds a special place in my heart as it marked a final farewell to the models, especially with bringing old and new characters imaginable. I say any fan of Thomas should give this a watch, it’s a harmless, laidback, and fun special that definitely deserves some praise. it’s not Legend of the Lost Treasure tier or Adventure Begins tier, or Blue Mountain Mystery tier, but it’s definitely up there. As it marks the end to an important part of Thomas’ life.
That comment is really big
@@carolmckenna5567 yes I know, out of all the HiT era and the stuff we got ranging from decent to horrible, this is definitely a breath of fresh air.
By far the most nostalgic T&F movie. 2008 is the most nostalgic year for me and I remember getting the movie for my birthday in oct of 2008 just a month after the movie came out.
I love this film. This was basically the final media of Thomas I remember watching and loving as a kid. It didn't really feel the same after that. I also like how you explain your gripes with the special and say how they could be fixed.
The last T&F DVD I ever bought... Beyond the end credits having the best piece of music the franchise ever had, I thought the movie was OK. Pierce is a great actor but his narration didn't do much for me. I think I was just done with T&F at that point...
The End Credits Music is basically T&F Life is a Highway.
I agree Pierce Brosnan's narration just ruins the movie for me 5/10
My recent headcanon for Stanley is that he was built by Sir Topham Hatt making him the youngest engine in the series making Thomas jealous.
Yes this movie did spawn the best toys (I love the Duplo Stanley)
I think this was filmed alongside the Series 11. Such evidences include the yellow lighting with the full models which was exclusive to that series. Some of the sets like the Main Line signalbox, Brendam Docks, Ffarquar Quarry, the Skarloey Railway, and Tidmouth Sheds are the same. This was also produced in 2007 like Season 11 rather than its release year of 2008. Pre-production on Series 12 began in June 2007 when HiT Entertainment consulted Stardust Pictures and Nitrogen Studios to add CGI Elements to Thomas. By the time the Great Discovery was released Series 12 had already finished production. Also the Narrow Gauge Engines song released for Series 11 released in 2007 featured scenes from the Great Discovery before it was officially released. This is my theory for why I think the Great Discovery and Series 11 were produced and filmed concurrently.
I Remember watching The Great Discovery on Netflix on the Family computer when I was a kid
(Yes All the Thomas specials were on Netflix at one point), and I’m glad It’s getting all the appreciation it deserves.
Thomas you're the
leader was gonna
play here but
copyright was like nah
If I was made the new owner of Thomas, I would:
- make sure seasons 1-5 are as widely available as possible (as originally aired, not those remasters!)
- make sure the inevitable reboot is as lovingly made as possible (maybe Adam Hills could be narrator?)
- have the Ertl and Brio toy lines relaunched (and have Tomy sell their motorized toys worldwide)
- make sure the franchise has a brighter future overall
A few other things I’d do: I’d have Adam Hills re-narrate The Great Discovery, replacing Pierce Brosnan’s not-so-enthusiastic narration, the season 2 DVD rerelease would include The Twin Engines book, read (again) by Adam Hills, to make up for the lack of a Missing Coach TV adaptation, and alongside the new classic series DVDs, I’d rerelease season 9 so those affected by the glitched 2010 release can easily get their discs replaced!
fun fact the original title for this movie was leader of the track that is probaly Why Thomas say it at the end and perise brosimen was originaly gonna narrate from seasons 12 to 14
1. I always had a soft spot for this movie
2. I would love to get Action Canyon
3. This is honestly a top 3 special for me. The only ones I find to be better are the 2015 specials.
4. Thomas, You’re the Leader slaps
5. 6:22 They probably overhauled the branch sometime in between Seasons 2 and 8
The Great Discovery was a fantastic! end & send off to the model series, a celebration featuring nearly every character prop we'll never see again. I already absolutely loved this special as a kid... and if The Unlucky Tug of all people thinks it's a damn good movie, that's good enough for me.
It’s about time we got a new episode of DVD reviews
Or Movie Reviews in this case lol
If this gets blocked in my country I will be so pissed
The Great Discovery was the first (and only) Thomas movie I ever saw in theaters. So it definitely holds a special place in my heart. And I think it's pretty good Thomas movie! BTW you and Jakey have great chemistry! Keep up the good work! 👍
13:50 I noticed that Edward was missing in this scene. I wonder why he didn’t appear a lot in the movie… Anyway, imagine that if Toby switched tracks when they were just getting back to work, Henry reversed a bit and then bumped Thomas in a “What have you done?! I hate you for this!” kind of way, hard enough to twist the blue guy’s buffers!
They pulled a TATMR on him lmao
That sounds awesome
THE ADRESS. I AM DYING HAHA.
i love this movie and i used to watch it a lot with my brother when we were younger, it's very nostalgic to us and it reminds me of when we used to play with our take and play trains :)
I grew up watching the great discovery when I was younger and I also grew up with Thomas and friends when I was younger and I still like watching it to this day and it’s still a every good show and Thomas is good for any age
😅🤣🤣😂😂😂😂what was with buzz falling with mario scream sound.
I remember watching this when I was younger I loved that movie it feels like I have not seen this for so long and the old old old old show
this movie is peak hit era
Can't wait for this video
Awesome can't wait to see this video
Jay sounds like a younger LS Mark
2:33-2:47 XD!
12:45-12:57 LOVE this bit!
20:05 "No. Don't. Not again." XD
Excuse me? How can anyone dislike Sonic X? Everytime I listen to that theme song, I'm pumped.
I noticed the color correction in this video. I wished that was actually used in the movie and S11 and 12
7:20 welcome Stanley!!!!
The best thing about this fim is the song, Thomas, You're The Leader.
You two are freaking hilarious! I couldn’t stop laughing at all your guys’ pokes throughout this film. But I agree, it has issues but it’s one of the better model Thomas films. I’m looking forward to when I can do my review on it. Great job guys!
The big engines have been visiting Brendam Docks since Season 3, it’s not really an issue in the show Jakey.
You mean season 5?
Brendam docks never appear in season 3.
The docks in season 3 was tidmouth.
I remember being a kid when this movie came out and it was my favorite Thomas movie ever my mom was telling me that I would watch this like everyday and my favorite scene was always Thomas in the mine lol this was the end of Thomas and ya know what they went out with a bang. great video you hit my nostalgia very well lol now I need to find it and watch it again.
6:13 in defense of Henry at the docks
Its been alot of years since Wrong Road and im pretty sure they upgraded the Bridges
In season 5 in cranky bugs and season 6
I liked how they used many characters in the film, since this was the last full model season maybe they did that on purpose y'know.
9:39 lol
it’s kinda sad how they managed to get everyone’s character accurate in this movie when the episode depict them as completely different people.
This is my favorite Thomas movie of all of them. I actually really dislike Pierce Brosnan's narration but I grew up with the Dutch narrator and he is the best narrator ever
YOOO ANOTHER DUTCH PERSON!!! And yeah erik de zwart really is a fucking awesome narrator
@@BanePlays134 agreed, I just wish he attempted more character voices because he barely did any
It's my favourite Thomas film too
Of course there are like 1 billion sonic references…
My good friend TywynWharf2002 once stated that Great Discovery could've felt like a true finale to Thomas had it not continue with CGI.
On the subject here, I felt that this film really is a true finale to Model Thomas (no S12 DOESN'T count here). The amount of world building like Great Waterton, the amount of characters used one final time, Thomas' character, Pierce Brosnan's narration, everything really made it all stand out. I never had the DVD, so I may plan to get it in the future sometime. For now, I did saw it a few times here on RUclips. And I agree that Calling All Engines does have a lot of boring kiddy-ish learning segments that drag the story (although it is still a bad film), but The Great Discovery really nailed the focus more on the story and I am so glad that even Sam Barlow pointed that out at the last minute and made the segments as separate bonus features.
For the music, absolutely fantastic. The songs, a few hit or miss, with Jobs-a-Plenty as a great bop and Thomas You're the Leader being my absolute jam of the movie. Even the last lines from Thomas and the narrator at the end really feels like a brilliant closure to a fantastic Classic children's show for both children and adults (and most of us who love it in childhood and we still do today growing up).
The fact that this movie has a better ending to the franchise then the way it actually ended is wild
fun fact: in the german instrumental of racing to the wharf the instruments are full of power and sound more energic than the english instrumental
Fun fact: I acctually thought Henry was female when I was younger
Me too I also thought the same about percy
My favorite Thomas movie is always switching between the Great Discovery and sodor's legend of the Lost treasure
Great movie in my opinion but there something missing duck and Oliver Donald Douglas and Daisy and boco Murdoch Neville toad and old slow slow coach Caroline. They could of put them in a scene that didn't have a character on that track.
Plus Derek, Duke, Fergus and the remaking pack members.
@@joshuaW5621Duke as well
I'm sure if they knew that this was the last model thomas movie, they would've wanted to end the model series with a bang. And my god did they do that!
I Think The Great Discovery is a Underrated Gem !
I love this movie, when I was young and smol. I remember having two DVD movies of Thomas Hero of the Rails, and the Great discovery, I had day of the diesels and misty island but I liked the former two more. My Mom also grew up on season 4 and 5 and she showed some episodes on RUclips, but I also grew up on the miller era. Anyways the Great discovery was my only other experience with model Thomas season 4 and 5, and Great Discovery was like finding treasure, something new, and exciting for me since I didn't have the experience.
I absolutely adore this movie! It would've been a great finale
Watching the great discovery without the yellow tint effect is very cursed lol
Btw, what do y'all think of Thomas, You're the Leader? Y'all didn't talk about it.
18:26 *yeah, piss yellow?*
I have an explanation for Henry being at Brendam fun fact Henry has a smaller loading gauge than BoCo which means wrong road was wrong.
I think the branch has a bigger loading gauge in the show than in the books, so BoCo probably was wrong.
@@joshuaW5621 I know in the show it’s a different loading gauge but still BoCo has A larger load gauge than Henry in real life.
I love this movie. 8/10 best send off to the model series.
i like the colour you made
The great discovery is more enjoyable than CAE, it has some decent narration from Pierce Brosnan's for his one and only film which made a nice change from hearing both Michaels bland narrations from S8-11 prior to TGD.
It has a story that doesn't shove the message down our throats, and it's a much better flowing story without the learning segments which thank god us UK brits didn't have on the UK DVD bonus features.
For Sharon Millar's first film that she written was pretty good, I would say this movie, Hero of the Rails and Blue Mountain Mystery were some of her best written (please don't hate me).
Thomas being in character and the main protagonist actually works for once as it's basically going back to basics with his personality being similar to his personality in the classic series.
Thomas and Stanley's rivalry is similar to Woody and Buzz's rivalry in the first Toy Story movie.
Yeah, Thomas hating the new engine trope was used to death by this point but I think that it works in The Great Discovery because Thomas' motivation are somewhat justified here unlike the seasons that came before it where his motivation makes no sense whatsoever
The sets were just amazing and they continue to world build right at the tale end of the model era.
And do I need to say anything about TYTL, it's just a bop to listen to and just brings the model era to a close (even though S12 shouldn't have existed in my opinion), oh and was the first time that a song was used for the end credits in a actual Thomas movie that started from this movie all the way to the BWBA movie (and no I don't count Thomas and the tragic failroad as it's not cannon at all)
Overall, TGD is just way better than CAE any day of the week, sure it has it's flaws but most Thomas movies are flawed in one way shape or form.
TA Redub’s for the 1k of the Great Discovery also
Molly was Cameo Trevor and George the steamtroller was there and
oh my god a wheel said Henry
The movie was decent but I don’t like when they did some of the characters traits have the wrong traits.
Just my opinion.
The great discovery is my favorite thomas special
Gordon and James look like Old Man Jenkins from SpongeBob SquarePants and many more other characters including Old Man Grumpus from Wow Wow Wubbzy being grumpy all the time!
Another great video from Sean and Jakey! And I was even at the premiere of this review!
edit: I also own The Great Discovery on DVD!
BTW The Calling All Engines Vid You Made Is Blocked In Where I Live, I Hope This One Isn’t Blocked
where i live they banned season 12 because it was conciderd to scary looking
so this was really the last thomas model production where i live
and season 12 looks like shit
"Sodor is saved"
biEch, Thomas was gone for maybe 35ish hours... Just because a silly little E2 is gone that doesn't mean Sodor will go into doomsday.
I had a toy Stanley once, I’m 15 about to be 16, I’m born and raised in the south, and now a toy Stanley is about $300
I've always loved The Great Discovery!
Ok imma be honest
I love the original yellow tint of the movie
idk its just something about it that's just eye candy to me
18:30: Where did you even get this restored version? Did you just color correct the UK DVD or Amazon Prime Video footage?
6:45 HOW THE HELL DID YOU SAY THAT ABOUT SONC X
I remember back in summer of 2019 I searched Thomas and friends on my moms fire stick tv and the Saw the great discovery and watched for the first time and I loved and was surprised to see Stanley since at the time I mostly saw him in cgi
The fight scenes are pure...
*BRITAIN*
Here's how I would've done The Great Discovery: The bridge scene (which I don't feel like it played that much significance in the story (seriously, you could just have Duncan lead Thomas down the wrong track and still have him find Great Waterton and nothing would be lost, the bridge was just a pointless diversion)), would cause Thomas to be on edge for much of the special, a case of PTSD, leading to him being overprotective as a leader, trying to make sure every engine does their job safely, but too slowly. And when Stanley comes to Sodor, have him be overly confident in what he does, essentially giving him Thomas' personality in this special, making Thomas stare down his old self to show how far he's come (it also would've given Stanley an actually interesting personality with a more defined arc), to the point where he might be putting others in danger in Thomas' eyes. In the middle of the special, rather than Thomas intentionally shunting a bunch of trucks for Stanley to make him look foolish, Stanley ordered him to shunt that many trucks for him to take due to his overconfidence, despite Thomas warning him against it multiple times. And when the trucks crash into the tower, having triggered Thomas' memories of the bridge, Thomas snaps at Stanley in anger for putting everyone in danger, and then Stanley is the engine the others are upset at, and from this point onwards, Thomas and Stanley's roles are essentially reversed, though Thomas regrets having snapped at Stanley and acting the way he had throughout the special, and Stanley regrets being so arrogant in his attempts to impress the others. When Thomas pulls Stanley back onto the tracks and his valve bursts, Thomas is instead content, having gotten over his PTSD from the bridge. I feel like swapping Thomas and Stanley's roles here would give the special an interesting moral, not only about PTSD but also about a fine line between being too protective and too confident.
The Great Discovery is my favorite Thomas and friends film, it’s not perfect but it’s so good.
The Great Discovery was definitely an improvement over Calling All Engines!
I think the great discovery is pretty amazing for my liking
I love The Great Discovery, growing up and it is so much better then Calling All Engines, and Thomas And The Magic Railroad! It’s quite ashamed is was the final season of the Model until they moved on to CGI.
I remember watching this dvd when I was a really young and my mom has this movie on Apple TV
My only guess as to why Diesel 10 is happy that Thomas has been found is because in the previous movie, Calling All Engines, Diesel 10 helps the steam and diesel engines, and this m8ght be proof that Diesel 10 is happy that Thomas is found. Since Spencer wasn't in the great discovery, he could have been cross to hear about Thomas being found
It is quite a good film, I like the voicing but could have been better. But a proper 8/10.
I think more returning characters could have happened (even if short cameos as a last good-bye/send-off to them) as Boco (even if not seen after Series 5), Derek, Stephney and (definitely) Lady.
Lady could have easily have hopped on board this film, by making either a small dream or "mental health" scene, calming down Thomas when floating on the cold river and telling him to mend things up in Great Waterton and that his friends and her cared about him to get lost and learn from not being selfish or jealous...
OOOR other option: A cameo, when Thomas is found, all Diesels cheer, and then D-10 tells Lady that Thomas is found and back on track, to which Lady could not have been happier that her friend is safe and sound. And at the end of the film, she sees Thomas and go for a ride both of them.
Ah men I would give that film 💯/10.
A proper 8.5/10 for this film
I love this movie so much!! The songs, new character, every known character in one movie is all great!! The narrator was great too! Makes the movie sound special! It would've been nice if he continued to Series 12. Even the DVD (US) is awesome!! I can't dislike anything about the movie. The Great Discovery, Journey Beyond Sodor, Thomas and the Magic Railroad, and Misty Island Rescue are the best Thomas movies made.
This is my FAVORITE Thomas The Tank Engine movie. I’m excited to see what you have to say about it!
5:02 the ACTION!
13:03 the THRILLS!
13:09 the SUSPENSE
ITS ALL NEW THOMAS AT ACTION CANYON!
I just enjoy the movie, not just because its nostalgic for me, I just find it enjoyable.
