      usually with an album there's a few things I can pick out than im not a fan of even if I'm a huge fan, but with this the ONLY thing I can think of is the falsetto part on the 'I smile' part of carnavoyeur.

      It’s grown on me now, I love it

    • @RegularPhil
      @RegularPhil 4 месяца назад

      It has grown on me a lot but what put me off the most was the feeling of "I've heard this before" when listening. There's lots of similar melodies to their previous stuff, especially from Un-Reborn Again and Villains of Circumstance and some TCV stuff as well. Not exactly the same melodies but close enough that it rubbed me the wrong way at first.
      But tracks like Carnavoyeur and Sicily make up for it. Those two are truly great.

    I really love that the album closes with an acoustic version of the Intro Obscenery. Really caps off the album as a whole work and not just a collection of songs. Also there is so much with this album that you can track from other projects that Josh has worked on in the past. You get a little bit of Eagles of Death Metal, Desert Sessions, and Them Crooked Vultures. You can feel the history and experience bleed into this and help color everything. Dark, heavy, full of loss and anger, almost frightening lyrically, but a ton of interesting grooves on top with a sound that is both classic queens and super fresh. Stellar. I feel like with QOTSA there aren't any weak albums. That's why it's hard for me to rank this one in their discography, it just fits in so nicely there.
    On a side note, you shoud totally listen to the new Smile song "Bending Hectic", it's 8 minutes long and apparently not a part of a new album cycle, but just a standalone single.

    Very thankful that ITNR didn’t turn into a Villains Part 2. That album just hasn’t stuck with me 5 listens deep unlike pretty much every other Queens record. ITNR brings flavors from pretty much their whole discography to the forefront. That sustained note/feedback on Sicily is reminiscent of the feedback on Better Life Through Chemistry on Rated R. Paper Machetes got that drive you hear a lot throughout SftD. Negative Space has some Little Sister vibes off of LtP. The main lead hook in Time & Place gives me Into the Hollow vibes. Just a few things that come to mind at the top of my head. Besides villains I think everything they’ve put out is a solid 7/10 if not higher

Personally I think Villains has some cool arrangements with familiar tones/Melodie’s similar to previous efforts listed above, but I feel like it doesn’t fire on all cylinders. yeah, I mean, so far I've seen only SFTD oldfag purists complain. This work destroys villains, yeah, it lacks the catchy poppy QOTSA motives... But overall it has a lot of influence from Era, Lullabies, even some TCV swag, not a single "filler" track (though I fell like made to parade is the weakest one), but holy hell it's a great album. It's not their strongest work for sure, but just because other QOTSA albums are fucking timeless masterpieces, and Like Clockwork was their commercial peak.
