- This is a commonly over complicated procedure. I show you how to upgrade your hard drive without any prior formatting or using a flash drive to update. The ps3 will format a blank or new hard drive itself and you can update after the installation if you need to. Thanks!

To anyone still reading the comments, I tried this on my CECHE01 model and it worked perfectly.
So I had issues not being able to format a 1tb to fat 32 on my imac (no option available for fat 32 on this specific HDD). My PS3 would give me an error after trying to update via flashdrive.
This method worked great first try. This is a great work around for mac users or anyone who has issues with HDD not recognized. Thanks 👍🏼
this only works with the fat models because the firmware is completely on the system board.
will not work with slim or supper slim since the firmware is mostly on the hard drive only 16MB of the firmware in newer models is on the system board and the firmware is total 200MB
so the slim and supper slim models you have to use a flash drive with a compatible firmware version on it

I'm looking into getting a PS3 backwards compatible just because of the ps2 library I have. So what ur saying is I don't have to flashdrive or anything just change one out?

@@li_B4shar_il hdclone 8 free ,, can clone ps3 disk i do it for replace my 60 hdd to a 64 gb ssd , but be aware that u can't gain capacity by cloning , so u should use the same capacity ssd or u will pay for capacity that u can"'t use ,, so if u clone 60 gb on 120 gb , u can use only 60 gb , bcuz it's similare clone , but u don't have to format anything

Connect storage media that contains update data of version 4.46 or later.
you have to download the update file from the playstation website, create a "PS3" folder on a FAT32 USB stick, inside that PS3 folder, you create a folder called UPDATE and you drag the update file in the UPDATE folder
how about if you have a lot of previous data on the hard drive FROM 10 YEAR TIME, I am switching from one ps3 to another ps3 same models PLEASE ANSWER ANYBODY

Restore ps3 option on mine doesn't do anything
Ps3 uses a special file system not FAT32 or NTFS for its internal drive. however trying to back everything up from hd0 using the CFW file manger didn't work it failed when trying to copy ps2 isos only copying some of them. I'm trying to use FTP to finish the transfer but it's a bit slower
So should i buy a 500gb hd then off amazon for my ps3 slim? the data was corrupted in my old hd.

i tried that but then it went to the system software cannot be run correctly. press the ps button to try to restart the system and then below that it said if the system cannot be restarted you must reinstall the system software. connect storage media that contains update and so on so nope it dont work for me and i cant get on the playstation site it said unsafe site and locks me out so i guess im back to my old 40 g drive.
I prefer the ssd hard drive it makes games run better and load faster
PS3's hardware is too dated to take advantage of modern SSDs.. they're wasted on a PS3. But an SSHD is worth a try.
Yeah the ssd is pretty much useless in the ps3. A bigger hdd is all you need.

Wow, dude! It makes the console just like a pc because you used SAFE mode. I just downloaded the software to a flash drive after installing an SSD and proceeded to update to 4.92, I think it is. It works aight and everything, but I'm like: "Damn, I wish I knew this process!" Oh well.

mathias ZIX , yes it' work , but the cloning won"t expand capacity , be aware of this ,, so u can cloning 60 gb hdd on ssd 64 gb and lose just 3-2 gb it's ok , ( bcuz 60 gb ssd is not exaclty the same 60 gb than hdd ( more or less sector ) ,, but if u clone 60 ps3 disk on on 25O gb ssd , u won't have more capacity ( u will just have 60 gb on ssd that all )
,, it's better to have a just few Gb more than under gb ,, cloning 250 gb on 256 gb ssd will work ,, cloning 250 gb on 240 gb won't work of course ( if u by exemple cloning ps3 500 hdd , u must chose 512 gb ssd ( 1 tb will work but u will lose monney and capacity ) ,, so it's better than u buy real ssd brand that offer 512 gb than 480 gb by exemple ( pny do that ) and some brand do too ( less over provisionning reserve block ) so u can buy brand with 512 gb , 256 gb like pny ssd and not 240 or 480 , like samsung , kingston ect
hd clone 8 free edition , work ,, other prog like aesus , aomie cloning don't work , don't waste your time to teste them , they don't cloning disk who is not already formated in fat or ntfs ( it's not true cloning bit to bit software ) hd clone 8 free , can clone all , he don't need to know if u disk is formated or not the ps3 are crypted many sofware don't recognize it ,, but hd clone 8 work perferclty ( u can clone with 2 usb adaptor ,, 1 for ps3 hdd , and the 2nd usb adaptor for the new ssd ) u don't need a big pc , i do that with my surface pro with only 1 port usb with hub . and it's worked perfeclty
mathias zix , don't forget that ps3 max capcity that ps3 can accept is 1.5 tb hard drive , u can't put more than that ( ssd or hdd ) , so i think 1.5 tb ssd don't exist ( it"'s 1 tb or 2 tb ) , so u have to use 1 tb max then ,, or 1.5 tb hdd ,, , but it's overkill , i think ps3 u can 1 tb or even 720 gb ssd ( chinese ssd ) it's enough

This video is 5 years old I know but, I formatted my ssd MBR completely unallocated, tried this to the letter and it did format it but did not boot up properly, still had to download the software and put it on a USB to get it to do anything. Super Slim PS3 though

I think my hard drive is dying, games keep freezing, so what I want to do is to buy a cheap ps3 on EBAY then replace the hard drive, just to make sure I haven't bought another problem old hard drive Ps3, then Format the new hard drive into the ps3 I bought on EBAY then transfer all my data to the newly bought one which will be formatted to receive the data?

how do I backup data from ps3 that is over 300gb to an external 500gb. I've formatted the 500gb with fat32 partition but my ps3 doesn't see it. It sees a smaller hard drive of 160gb. I.ve 3 different 500gb hard drives.
I think you have to create folder on the 500 GB drive called PS3, to might be seen

So let get back to the ps3 I was giving a ps3 fat CECHM03 but when I get it it was not working
as it had the red and yellow flashing of death,

I have no experience with jailbroken ps3s. I would imagine if you swapped hard drives you'd have to do the whole jailbreaking process all over again if it was even possible. sorry I just don't know man.

I think you'd probably have to start by reverting to original firmware some how. when you install a new hardrive the ps3 a automatically installs the latest firmware.

@@dariellaahad1501 yes u can clone 250 hdd on 1 tb but u wont have 1 tb space but only 250 gb bcuz it's pure clone , u can"t extend capacity , that why i reccomend you to clone ur 250 gb on 256 gb ssd , not for the extra capacity but cloning for have same data on the ssd with better speed . it's the only purpose of cloning , change the support , it's not extend capacity , if u want extra capacity u need to reformat in ps3 in think

Well thanks, I thought it was as easy as on PC. I need a bigger hdd because I have no more free space, that's why I don't consider the equally sized ssd as an option. So I guess I need two hdd, one for the backup and one for the storage update
