I have to come get my Sultans of Swing fix every so often - it's just such an exceptional, evocative song in every way. The lyrics put you in every roadhouse you ever wandered into. Needless to say, Mark Knopfler's guitar performance is a lyrical classic.
Summer of '79, a three month hippy honeymoon across Europe. It's around midnight and we're running through the Munich train station trying to catch an overnight to Vienna. Sultans of Swing is playing through the station loud speakers at full volume. First time hearing it. The feeling of euphoria is still there...over 40 years later.
Lovely to see how much Mark is enjoying this performance! And just improvises his bridging licks with that fluid mastery of his guitar. One of the joys of watching Mark is the different ways he plays his songs!
A guy that I used to play with was absolutely obsessed with him. They had very similar finger picking styles. He used to beg us to play this with him. We got to where we actually had a really tight cover of it. We used to play it for sound check. It was good because everyone has distinct parts. He had the solos down. Not me, I'm like "guitar George". I play chords with a pick ..... Boring I know. Usually though for soundcheck you play like 1 minute just to tweek the levels and everything. So we're in this bar one night doing soundcheck, and the soundguy never stopped us. He was amazed that we were a 4 piece and everyone was good enough to actually play that entire song. He was a fan after that.
This song and performance is as relevant today as it was 42 years ago, only much more appreciated as a timeless piece of music history! Thank you Mark and the Dire Straits crew.
I'm dancing/tapping to the tune.. even lying in bed...whenever i hear this original version of the young MK...thank you MK for creating this wonderful song!
Wow wow..great Mark Knopfler..it is not easy to rule the world of music for so long..this is masterpiece..Sultans of Swing with his fingers doing magic on guitar..still there is no one to equal him..love from Pakistan..🇵🇰🇵🇰🇵🇰
Knopfler's Strat sound is nothing less than iconic. With so many things that he's throwing out there, you almost miss the iconic P-bass sound coming from the bass player. Such a great song. I could listen to Knopfler for days.
The whole album just came out of the blue, landing smack in the middle of dying 70's dinosaurs, snarling insipid talentless punks, and cookie cutter corporate rockers. Dire Straits might as well have come from another stsr system. Their music was so different and yet so timeless and familar. I love the feel of this album. It has a warmth, a whiteness, a kind of authentic purity. The only other record that matches it in terms of this feel is Television's eponymous third album--another classic for anyone who loves great guitar playing.
I remember listening to the song in 1978 for the first time. Never heard of the band before never heard a prior song from them before it wasn't like some songs where they need to grow on you this was an instant smash!
I was at college when this was released. Along with Pink Floyd's "The Wall", Sultans of Swing was the soundtrack to that period. We had heard nothing like it before and it has become a timeless classic.
In 44 years does anyone think people will still be listening to any current hit today? Really hope music comes back to great sound like this sometime soon.
I lived in West Germany at the time and remember seeing this performance on the TV programme Rockpalast. About the only watchable entertainment programme at the time. Magic.
I think so, IIRC. I believe in Rolling Stones Magazine a while back, when they asked many of the greatest guitarist alive then to vote in their opinions of the greatest solos, this was up there but it was beat out by the Hotel California solo. That one speaks to you. I love the note selections in this one, as well.
Wow Mark, i was in my rebel teens when i partied with my friends and came across these songs. Been listening to you since and passed passed your songs to my kids and now enjoy hearing my grandkids listening to you. Love you Mark, thank you for carrying me through my best years with your music.
One of their best songs. Mark was sitting in a bar when on tv he saw the name of a jazz band called The Sultans Of Swing. Today at age 70, Mark still plays well. Doesnt move much anymore, but age has only improved that great talent in Mark Knopler. Long live Mark Knopler and thanks Mark for all the lovely songs you have given us.
I was a university student in the USSR when the record company Melodiya released the licensed record Dire Straits «Love Over Gold». Since then, «Telegraph Road» has taken a strong place in my life. Mark changed my entire life
My entire teenage years were in the decade of the 1970's. I am so blessed to have grown up with the best bands of all time, drove American made muscle cars, raced two stroke motorcycles and hung out with girls wearing hip hugger bell bottom jeans and platform shoes. Thank you Lord.
I have the wonderful memory of stage crewing for these guys at Trent Poly. Might have been 1979 or 1980. I still have the broken drum stick from the gig and the tour badge. Shortly afterwards they became huge and you couldn't get a ticket for any of their gigs . Happy days.
He is alien like!I think he is better than Clapton, who is rated 2nd in the world!! Jimi Hendrix is of course number 1 in the.world. I saw him in 1973 and he played guitar with his teeth!! Could not believe what I was seeing!! R.I.P. JIMI!!
I Disagree with you Shelia Roxanne. This Group is #1. Even the Battles woups have grabbed them up if possible So u r so WRONG ON THIS !! This Group can OUTPLAY, them THEM ALL 👍👍👍👍
What a talent! I love how every short phrase sung is answered by a quick fantastic guitar riff, until the guitar just finally takes over in full at the end.
I just absolutely freakin' LOVE how they end the song on a high during a solo instead of fading out... leaves you jammin' on cloud 9 with a crazy hype.... \m/!!!
One of my favorite songs since the first time I heard it. I believe it to be one of the finest songs in the history of Rock-N-Roll. I've been listening to Mark Knopfler ever since. Amazing work.
Grew up with my father playing dire straits, this song stuck with me, me being 25 now he passed away two months ago, my father lives on through the music I play.
My dad hated music for the most part. He only likes Dire Straits. Every time we go out on the boat he'd tell me to throw in the cassette tape, and I never realized how that would stick with me. I miss him so much. God bless you, and I'm so glad that you have the music and the memories!
This song is a genius masterpiece where it has proven that a Rockstar need not to exert that high pitch but a melodic guitar with variance of all complete tone with a distinct recall inspired many people all over the galaxy and Knopler can sing his song untill he reaches 100 years in this world
5:20 I went to his "Kill To Get Crimson" tour in 2008. When he played this song, most people must've thought he's getting too old and would gloss over this part and play a "softened" version. But no, he played it *like a boss* and the whole crowd erupted and jumped to their feet in a spontaneous standing ovation. Was an awesome thing to see.
Here is a song that my friend Bobby wrote and he was also playing in the band Mechanize, but I believe they recently broke up. Here's that song: ruclips.net/video/8-HRyh_04rk/видео.html
this 1979 video really shows how good mark knopfler was, is, and will be. his effortless embellishing of his own song as we know it, is fantastic. the runs are beautiful.
+Stephen Chase it's really great to have youtube to compare how his performance of the song has evolved, while this is not one of my favorite versions, it is interesting to contemplate that perhaps that audience may have appreciated this performance, now over 35 years old to the ones performed more recently, point being that time and place are also relevant to how it is perceived. (I love the look of the audience, so great to see the style of the day in all its glory!!)
My favorite guitar player in the whole world. Mark K. is the best!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Mark has a God given talent for sure.
This song is a masterpiece. Nothing more, nothing less.

Mark Knoppler greatest guitar player ever
The unmistakable sound of Mark Knopfler at work. Timeless.
Lovely to see how much Mark is enjoying this performance! And just improvises his bridging licks with that fluid mastery of his guitar. One of the joys of watching Mark is the different ways he plays his songs!
Mark is praised, quite logically. But the trio behind him is also really awesome.
Best Dire Straits period, thanks to Pick Withers.
Mark is an absolute professor of the guitar.

Timeless. It never gets old hearing this year after year.

Classic for the ages. So good.
Mark Knopfler made the decade, made history. What would life be without this solo and this track? Wasted.
