There is a myth that calcium is the main mineral you need for osteoporosis and to strengthen your bones.
The majority of what makes up bone is collagen, which is protein. There is calcium in your bones, but it’s tied up with phosphorus.
In some interesting studies, they found that taking calcium doesn’t prevent bone fractures. There is also strong evidence that taking a calcium supplement can increase the risk of cardiovascular problems.
It’s essential to get enough vitamins, minerals, and trace minerals in your diet. The most important vitamins for bone health are vitamin D and vitamin K2.
Another factor in your bone health is your hormones. For example, a deficiency in estrogen or high cortisol can lead to osteoporosis.
Bone loss isn’t contributed to one thing. Overall, to build bone, you need to focus on creating a healthy body.
The best source of calcium to help strengthen the bones is dairy. But, a combination of plants and dairy is great for supporting healthy calcium levels.
Signs and symptoms of a calcium deficiency:
    • Muscle spasms
    • Tetany
    • Changes in heart rate
    • Numbness around the mouth
    • Numbness in the fingertips and feet
    • Spasm in the larynx (hoarseness, rough-sounding voice, a lump in the throat)
    • Consuming excessive amounts of protein, sodium, coffee, soft drinks, and refined sugar
Calcium is needed for your health, but it may be best to get it from food. One of the biggest health benefits of calcium is that it may help prevent certain intestinal cancers. Keep in mind that you need plenty of vitamin D and magnesium to absorb calcium.

I got my mum onto D3 combined with K2 and unfortunately she fell and broke her hip in December. However, the surgeon said that her bones were quite strong, making the resulting surgery a resounding success. I'm of the belief that the D3 K2 played a major part in her healing. She's almost 75 by the way and also takes magnesium each day.

    On the subject of Osteoporosis:
There's also the interruption of the hydroxyapatite crystalline lattice in bones by the introduction of Fluorine ions (from "fluoride" or "fluorine-containing" chemicals). Fluorapatite has a differently-sized structure, so can cause porous bones where it displaces Calcium-based apatite. It's like building a brick house with differently-sized bricks - the core structure will be irregular, less strong, and have holes/cavities in its structure.
So, when doctors give patients fluoride tablets to treat osteoporosis, to apparently "strengthen bones", they're doing a disservice to the patient.

    HALLELUJAH !!! Thank you!!?
Years ago, when I first became osteopenic, a specialist in arthritis told me to take 1.5 grams of elemental calcium per day. I knew this was not the solution, so I refused and didn’t go back. Later on, a doctor convinced me I needed to take one of the Fosomax type meds. Three years later, no real bone increase. Finally I read about vitamin K2!!!
Two years after taking K2 and Vit D my bone mass increased by 20%.
I made the mistake of telling my GP this and handing her a research paper that I had found on NIH website. Our Canadian doctors DO NOT study anything about nutrition!!! This month she has refused to renew my other medications unless I come to see her. (Kowtow to her superior power.) Right now I am furious but will have to keep my mouth shut since Canada is low on GP’s now and with medicare, the worse impact is you cannot just up and change doctors, even if you can find one.

Again, best doctor around! I am frequently questioning and disturbed by the fact that the majority of doctors do not promote, educate or advocate this information. Its unbelievable. I work in aged care, and every resident admitted with a diagnosis of Osteoporosis is immediately commenced on Calcium carbonate, with no blood tests done for Vit D levels or any other relevant levels, and the poor families are left paying exorbitant amounts for calcium tablets when it is not the solution, yet the families feel obliged to pay for this despite its complete ineffectiveness. We need more doctors like you Dr Berg. If every doctor had the knowledge, skill set and willingness to educate their patients the way you do, imagine the health benefits for society as a whole. This video had some information about bone that was new to me…I consume raw dairy and was worrying about too much phosphorus. To learn that phosphorus was good for human bones (not just calves’ bones) was reassuring. I am 73 and work out three times a week with weights and treadmill, so I’m pretty sure my bone health is good, but it’s always good to get a little reassurance, and I know that bone is constantly being broken down and remade. I knew to take K2 with CoQ10, but not how it works with D3 to help with bone formation. I’m basically animal-based, so I get plenty of protein and fat, but I still eat some fruit, mostly raspberries with breakfast.
I am always finding something new in videos from you and others. Thanks! ❤

Wow, you are doing divine work doctor Berg. I was super skinny my whole life. I started working out and gained so much lean mass in such a short period of time that most people don't believe me. My post workout smoothie was a blueberry, marine collagen smoothie. I'd take a leucine and tryptophan supplement post workout as well. I was eating a pescatarian keto diet. I only ate blueberries in my smoothie post workout because I worked out fasted, so the fructose in the blueberries is used to replenish resources instead of kicking me out of ketosis.

I have RA and have terrible time maintaining weight, any suggestions to gain weight. I am limited to low impact exercise such as swimming , walking, sitting exercises. Movements that don’t have great impact on my feet abs knees.

    • @derek2593
      @derek2593 Год назад +3

@@rhi3953, first, you should address the RA. Diet is everything. You probably need to work on your diet to manage your RA better. Then your joints will be in better shape for exercise.
However, Swimming is great low resistance exercise. You might even think about holding a couple dumbbells while walking back and forth.

    • @derek2593
      @derek2593 Год назад +7

Also, the keto diet is best for lean weight gain. On keto, your body produces EXTRA HGH (human growth hormone). That said, it is difficult for your average person. I manage it well, but because I primarily eat food I make. I only eat out a couple times a year. But, if you eat out AT ALL, be aware that most public eateries use large amounts of soybean oil. On keto, poor quality oils will put you in rough shape (especially if you are female. Soy is full of psuedoestrogens that can easily cause female problems). When your body is using fats for energy, poor quality fats affect you more. My wife supplements with krill oil capsules and natural sea salt to keep her hormones balanced.
And, she has psoriatic arthritis. She has managed to get off all her prescriptions except for one. And, she seems more energetic than I have seen her in about 15 years. Again, DIET is everything.

After being diagnosed with ckd about 6 months ago, I began a plant diet. I have been taking magnesium and boron for about 12 years and vitamin k2 for 12 months. I also take turmeric.
I developed a twitch under one eye, and after watching one of your videos where you talked about oxalates and calcium I started to put some cheese on my sandwich with the turmeric, now I just noticed watching this video that the twitch has gone. Thanks Dr. Berg.
I will have to research and experiment more to be more balanced with what I eat, and it's hard as everyone has different opinions with diet and ckd.
I forgot to mention that I can't supplement with D3, it makes me really nauseous, I do go for long walks most days.
I mostly feel energetic since cutting out processed foods and sugar, and my mind feels really sharp, my memory has improved heaps.
I find really sad that doctors aren't much help and we have to find information for ourselves.

Sounds like you need to get off of gluten, which I assume you have done. It will destroy the intestinal villa which will impede absorption of minerals and nutrients. It's not really a question of gluten sensitivity because it's a given it will do this to everyone over time.
Did you mean GERD? (Not GORD?) That means you are low in stomach acid and can't digest food well enough to extract minerals. The sphincter muscle between the stomach and esophagus will not close unless there is enough stomach acid. It's not because there is too much stomach acid. I believe it needs to be at least 3.5 pH.
If you can, do whole food Vit C. Ascorbic acid is really not good. A toxin actually that will also chelate minerals. It can also actually create a state of scurvy because it is not the full complex of Vit C.
      Good luck to you.

I then was diagnosed with osteopenia. My diet has always been made from scratch no processed foods, no hydrogenated oils. I buy only avocado oil to cook in. I love leafy greens and have lots of fresh vegetables. My problem is I struggle with malabsorption. Just like my dad. I have had to get ferriton and blood transfusions in the past.
