I’m an American and I was right there with you. I went to the Truck race at IRP and the whole stands cheered when he was introduced. He’s a fan favorite in America
As an American living in New Zealand for the past 20+ years, and a Supercars / NASCAR fan, like Larko, I too was standing in the lounge - clinching air and woohooing. When he qualified third, I figured it was game over, he's gonna win it. And what a good weekend it was, with three Kiwi's finishing in the top ten in IndyCar too! One of them, Markus Armstrong, is a rookie who's also leading in the rookie of the year points (by a fair margin). Supercars had strong representation at the Spa 24 hours, as did Whanganui with Earl Bamber driving for Grove Racing (with Stephen, Brenton and Anton), Chaz winning in Pro-Am. Great stuff! Great weekend! (there might have been an F1 race. Can't recall...)
WOW Larko is an absolute legend. Who else can explain things with such detail, accuracy and passion as that fella. It was a great take on what was a superb result from SVG.
Great commentary from someone who understands the really subtle nuances of brake/clutch/throttle control. This is why SVG is a master/champion and NASCAR winner...because he has honed his incredible talent on all variety of surfaces. Amazing stuff. Thanks Martin for asking the right questions. Totally enthralled!
I’ve been a NASCAR fan for 40 years and there has always been road corse ringers! Shane put on a show above and beyond the best in the business and I have no doubt he could compete and win on an oval in any sub par car
A message to Larko (and every other Aussie fan), This Kiwi is more than happy to share OUR (New Zealand and Australia) SVG!!! Aussie, Aussie, Aussie!!!
Greg from America here, Oklahoma to be specific. Great interview, and it was awesome to see a Kiwi come and show our fellas how to drive a street course! Congrats! Quick note, while the last generation NASCAR focused down force over the splitter and rear spoiler, the NEXTGEN car focuses more down force using a rear diffuser which is located under the rear of the car and "sucks the car down" to the pavement, similar to the theory behind formula one (not comparing the two, just saying the science is the same). Hope to see SVG in a cup car again! BTW, Go Hawks, maybe next year!
What a brilliant insight from Larko and great questions as well to help someone like myself understand more clear the magnitude of what SVG has done by winning in Chicago.
Jim Richards won a championship in a NASCAR at the Aussie Thunderdome, so being another Kiwi talent who was a top contender in everything he drove, there is no doubt SVG could adapt to ovals.
Jim was great, I think it was 11 targa Tasmania wins along with his Bathurst 1000 wins and historic touring car wins, another fantastic kiwi talent, I’m in awe of both of them.
Me being an Aussie, Jim Richards was a standout in his days. Seeing Gizzy racing from the beginning of his career to the current time, I knew this young bloke is a freak...a rare talent. Should have contemplated about a career in F1. Irrespective of the money needed to drive an F1, the guy could've turned a lot of heads in the F1 paddock...raw, natural talent. Not many drivers in this day and age can drive race cars in different categories and become serious contenders, like in the halcyon days in the 50's through to the 70's. He's one of those rare talent...through and through.
I hope supercar officials watched this race , this is how a race is run , bump and runs , let the drivers sort it out. Shane excelled in this environment
I have been watching other US Nascar channels / platforms and when they discussed SVG and his dominance within the race at Chicago they simply couldn't fathom how great he really is, they were blown away. One of the most prevalent conversations has been based around his ability to race better than seasoned veterans and how he made it seem so easy, considering the track they raced on was fairly basic in comparison to race tracks in Australia and New Zealand. This was easy cheese for SVG and I'm confident that many others from veterans to new top guns in the Supercar series would take that bull by the horns and compete with their best. But if we're talking about ovals ..... Possibly not ✌🏽😆
SVG is an amazing talent. It’d be great to see him come over to NASCAR. Don’t think it’ll be much of a learning curve with the new Gen-7 car being transaxled and independent rear. If memory serves, Ambrose’s biggest issue was getting used to the live rear axle.
he'll adapt to ovals pretty quickly I think. if Scotty can in an indycar I have no doubt shane can in a similar car to what he's used to. he loves the bumper to bumper and door to door bump and run style. doubters will be upset in not that long 😂 🇳🇿
Kudos to Trackhouse Racing for doing everything to make SVG comfortable in the car. BTW, there are plenty of V8 Supercar fans in the States who knew that Shane had a great shot at the win. How will he adapt to NASCAR? I think quite well but sliding a car at 150mph will take a little getting used to. But he is a tremendous talent and up to the task.
You obviously haven't seen Shane race drift cars or time attack cars or rally cars.... Basically anything with a steering wheel & gearstick he's a master of all sorts... Natural raw talent...
I wonder what was going through SVG's thoughts when the race was shortened right after half the field put on fresh tyres which would have needed them to stop again. Down to the tail of the field with few laps to go, then the pile up which saw him back at 18 again after having moved up to 10 or so. The commentators made reference to his fresher tyres than the lucky beneficiaries of the shortened race, but failed to mention all the others who had the same tyres as Shane and were nowhere. He passed the lot while they couldn't pass anyone even with their fresher rubber.
I was definitely rooting for Shane once my guy was basically eliminated by the total laps being reduced from 100 to 75 and put him in the back. I really would have liked to see him race a couple of the guys in the last few laps that had been leading the race before everything got jumbled up. The guys he was racing had older tires and were only up there because they got lucky. The difference is Shane worked his way up from the rear with patience and excellent skill and the other guys (Bell and Reddick) wrecked trying too hard to get back to the front.
Totally agree. People are over looking that the two best cars wrecked in the final 20 laps. Reddick was 5 spots ahead, on equal tires to SVG, when he wrecked himself out. That crash brought out the caution that out him in striking distance with those 15 lap fresher tires. Only guy with equal tires was Larson who was the car in front of him. After that, it was over. In not taking anything away, just saying that he had some things fall his way the last 20 laps. Two best cars wreck out, timely cautions and 15 lap fresher tires.
It will be hard for Shane to win on ovals in Nascar. The 10 or so best guys in Nascar like Larsen and Logano, etc have the same god-given skills, dedication to their craft, and competitive fire as SVG, but they've been honing their oval racing skills and techniques since they were 7/8 years old. But, agree with Mark, he'll figure it out quickly and be competitve. He'll be like Juan Pablo Montoya. Competitive on ovals once he gets experience and be in contention for wins ocassionally and beat some of them on his good day, but it's super hard to beat All of them on one given Sunday.
Shane might not have raced on an oval shaped circuit... But as you've seen he can turn his hand to most styles of driving... Drift cars, time attack cars, rally cars.... He's an absolute god when it comes to wet weather too....
He's a serious freak, let's face it....I thought of Forrest Gump, a prodigious talent, it was just to easy and so natural, even though he was driving foreign left hand drive. Outstanding!
The big thing in nascar is the ‘win and in’ when it comes to the playoffs. So if he did want to do it full time he could win one of the 5 ‘proper’ circuits in the regular season and survive the first round, win the elimination race on a proper course it would be a round of 8 appearance which I don’t think a rookie has ever done.

He studied the track and new when to brake and how much brake to use when going into the corners . It's not the speed going into the corners it's the speed coming out of the corners that matter and the line you take
Kudos to SVG on the win. I think he could catch on to the the ovals because of all the tools to work with now, but it will take time. I think he'd catch on to the shorter ovals faster because they race a little more like a road course, with the braking and the lower corner speeds. However, he's never seen anything like Darlington or Dover; there's also the sheer speed of Michigan where you're almost flat out in the current aero package or the pack racing at Talladega would be extremely challenging for him. IndyCar has a lot more down force and while aero still plays a role, it's not nearly as drastic and to compare Indy oval racing to NASCAR oval racing just doesn't work. Indycar is so much different for a lot of reasons.
@@lukeroberts2541 From that answer, it seems like you're not too familiar with NASCAR. With the sim time they can get now, I believe he would get the hang of it, but not in.2-3 races. Supercars aero pushes the car into the track at speed. NASCAR aero sucks the car onto the track at speed.
