SHANE VAN GISBERGEN WINS CHICAGO STREET COURSE RACE - HE TALKS TO THE MEDIA ABOUT THE WIN

  • Shane Van Gisbergen, a racer from New Zealand, did something that hasn't been done in 60 years, he won in the NASCAR Cup Series in his very first start. It's an incredible feat considering Cup Series Drivers are the best in the world in the cars they drive at the tracks on which they compete.
    But Shane is a Championship driver in the very similar Australian V8 Supercar series, and he has plenty of street races under his belt. And even though NASCAR goes to other road courses, this Chicago Street Course was an unknown for every driver in the field, giving Van Gisbergen a bit of an advantage.
    He sat down with the media after the race to talk about the win.

    "Still loves V8 Supercars but that race was special" a bit understated also saying anyone in the V8 Supercar could make it in Nascar I believe that too, but there are differences that takes a bit of time to adjust to. I would had thought there are big differences between Nascars & an Australian V8 Supercar. The other thing was driving with a spotter something he's never done before. Good on ya for carrying the flag for NZ & AU.

    The most surprising thing he said was that the locked diff (on supercars) vs open diff (on cup cars) meant that the cup car turns in better. Totally not what I would expect from watching both series.

    • @ae86rally
      @ae86rally 11 месяцев назад +1

      I have had both diffs in my car (as well as a limited slip) the locked diff can be a pig understeering (pushing) animal especially on slow tight corners whereas th open diff does turn much nicer but does not put its power down as well coming out of the corner. Also a locked diff can make a car unstable in corners (which is why they spi off so easily if they bumped mid corner)

      Bollocks. Nascar has been brilliant in working on this project. The drivers of both series are incredibly talented and have skills we can only dream about.
      Just saying.. The statement from this guy does NOT represent the vast majority of Aussies and Kiwis

      Watch some SuperCars..the cars bash and crash for position ..theres no easy racing..SVG is well know in using his car to put cars off balance with just a touch then whiz by , i will actually say hes a master at this technique.

      As a Kiwi too, I'm not the biggest Nascar fan. Some of the driving is a bit average, I do not like the championship format (how the entire season is basically decided on the last race), the stage racing has definitely reduced the 'racing' aspect and overall tactics, and there's not enough non-oval tracks for me. Re Indycar: I believe that is the best racing series in the world. There are numerous on-track passes, and the series is very diverse in terms of tracks (road course, street course, and ovals), and there are a large number of drivers that can win in any race: it would be the most competitive series on earth at the moment. As for V8 Supercars: it's OK, the last few races seemed better re more passing, but it's still got a ways to go to fully improve.

      He has a ride in V8 supercar next year so year after. V8 supercars are as close to Nascar cup cars more than any other racing car. Heavy cars with low down force, no abs or power brakes, no stability control or traction control, no power steering. Very close to the same cars.
