NASCAR DRIVERS REACT TO SHANE VAN GISBERGEN WINNING THE CHICAGO STREET RACE

- The runners up in the Chicago Street Race were Justin Haley, Chase Elliott, Kyle Larson and Kyle Busch. They all talked about the repsect they have for what Shane Van Gisbergen was able to do. They all say he was able to do things with his car that they could only dream of.

He does this race after race in Australia. Shane will attack and overtake car after car. When Shane does so, he is on the bumper on the next car immediately looking to pass and when he gets in the lead of the race it is error free and away he goes. Congratulations Shane from all Aussie race fans.
He has a feel on the brakes that NASCAR drivers don't really have a chance to develop.
As a Ford fan, SVG is a nightmare for me when I watch V8 supercars 🥴🥴
And did it without the typical obligatory bump and run of NASCAR’s drivers. Bravo to SVG
Love to see him full time in cup, per his request. He had a massive advantage coming into this race. You won't see him do this again in a cup car, unless it's a street circuit no other cup guy has experience in though.
@@miguelbarrero5572could at least like a real car lol must be embarrassing being a ford fan since they cant seem to win anything
As an Aussie, we are used to seeing the best of SVG. But I just want to give a complement to the NASCAR guys for being so humble in their responses to the media. Sportsmanship at its best I’d say. Great work guys.
I love that Kyle seems like he just enjoyed the show of a fellow professional racer shwoing people how it's done. I am a big SVG fan but as some of the other guys said he is only a rookie to that class, not racing in general. He wasn't making them look bad in my opinion, just showing them where they could go in terms of those cars performance on a street circuit.
@@TheGreatArchanum Fair call. The kiwis are good at a lot of stuff. The rivalry is there but when I am not supporting the aussies I am a kiwi fan.
@@TheGreatArchanum To a point, certainly, and in many spheres, such as music even. In F1 the Bruce McLaren name is still very prominent however Aussie Jack Brabham beat him to the punch by being the first constructor / driver to win an F! Championship. Chicagoians also witnessed the Aussies defeat NZers in the flying an spectacular Sail GP events.
Well said Jeremy.
@@TheGreatArchanumyep they all come to OZ to better themselves 😅
As a die hard NASCAR fan i cant say how much excitement this brought me he really did put on a clinic out there ive never heard of SVG before this but i will now never forget him and look forward to seeing more of him. Respect!!
So cool you are positive about an outsider claiming this unique win. He’s a charger and from day one of his supercar season he stood out for all the best reasons. SVG also likes to REALLY celebrate a victory. Have a look for his last Bathurst win and the national live interview he nearly just made the morning after…😂🤣😂🤣
Anyone of the top 10 Australian v8 supercar drivers would have won that race. They are better drivers than the nascar drivers by a country mile…Ask Darrell Waltrip..
It's horses for courses though isn't it. Shane's been there and done that on the street tracks he is the best v8 driver in Australia. I think the top ten guys in Aus could have done that is stretch .Cam Waters and Chaz Moztert could have done it if they stayed clean. It was a great result though it's funny though it's like everyone is waiting for the blow up but everyone is going how good is this guy . I loved it when Eckstrom drove that v8 into the top ten at Bathurst after Priex binned it . And it's a similar reaction wow how good is this guy, barely driven the car and he is fast
@@davidjohnston7512 and any nascar driver would destroy him on an oval. ofc a driver from a road course series does better at a roadcourse, they have good skillsets
@@etherealaim no one really know that though. Scott has done an amazing job in indycar and i am pretty sure hes won on an oval.
So proud of our Kiwi boy! What an incredible rookie drive in a really challenging format. Legend
As an American race fan and sometime competitor, I remember a couple of Kiwi boys that obliterated the competition in the CanAm series. Remembering Bruce Mclaren and Denny Hulme.
@@rickklein7792 Denny was a great favourite here in Australia. He sadly passed away after suffering a heart attack in the 1992 Bathurst race. Won 1967 FI Championship driving for Jack Brabham. Much respected man.
@@flamingfrancis I started following the CanAm series in 1967. My first race at Road America. Had the pleasure of meeting the "Bear" (as US media called him) in 1969 while helping a McLaren mechanic bleed the brakes on the M8B he was to drive. Great career with McLaren. CanAm, Indy, F1.
As an American, I really wish Supercar was more easily accessible here because I love watching Shane drive and its cool seeing him and Scott show us how to drive. I remember watching his Bathurst Pole lap in like 18/19
I wish so too! I’ve been really interested in the Supercars series and love watching the highlights but it’s tough to watch a full race
Me too... I hate having to rely on race highlights to see what happened.
Supercars used to have decent coverage in the states but no more. Its a shame since the racing and variety of tracks are great.
I have a subscription to their RUclips membership and they stream everything
@shmeeve good to know, I'm going to have to look into it. As much as I enjoy watching races that occur in the US, I also enjoy watching some of the race series overseas. I'm grateful for the fact that GT World streams on RUclips for free. But I'm seriously gonna have to look into streaming for Supercar.
Nice respectful comments. The GIZ is the Bomb though.
Love from New Zealand
SVG is the complete package. Awesome race. Great win. Go Gizzy!!
Soon as knew he was racing already knew he was gonna win ! Have been watching V8 Supercars since it was first shown when we had Speedvision in Canada My 1at kart number was 888 !!
Shane has had a lot of experience and success driving Supercars on on these types of street circuits here in Australia but I believe the real test of his skills will come when he races on the banked ovals of Nascar racing. I think he'll do well and look forward to seeing how he goes. Good luck Shane!
It's not even just the fact he won his first Cup race, but the fact he did it with this team. Raikonnen can't finish higher than 36th in this car. I don't want to call him an underdog because he's obviously talented beyond belief, but again, to do it is this ride is monumental for NASCAR.
SVG was just so smooth. Great talent.
Being an aussie I have respect for the guys who gave their opinions of the race. Good on you all.
SVG is at the top of his game, he only came second to Hayden Patten at the last Rally of NZ and Rallying is Hayden’s bread and butter. I don’t believe in bad NASCAR drivers or drivers that suck because NASCAR is an elite sport on its own. What you do have are drivers that are better than others and SVG grew up going sideways on gravel roads in NZ so he has honed his skills to what you see of him today.
Lets goo my brother much love and respect from Australia 💪💪🍻 take note nascar thats how its done plenty more ass kickings to come
Tires were also a big game changer for SVG, Elliott's tires were almost 20 laps older.
Pretty sure no one SVG has beaten in Aussie ( ie everyone) has been this humble in defeat, refreshing to see
The respect from Larson is REAL. That says alot. Looked like an interview after Larry Bird put on a clinic in the NBA. Dudes were in awe. Let's give some credit to Haley too. !st time he's ever been on a street circuit.
As an Aussie sprint car fan I rate Larson as a freaky good driver, so him heaping praise on SVG is high flattery for Giz. A lot of people in Aus are going to have to bite their tongues now, after predicting all sorts of doom and gloom for SVG in his NASCAR race
@@timjohnun4297 we here in NZ were more optimistic...
Wow What exceptional comradery and sportsmanship shown by all of them..
Super impressed all the drivers were extremely humble in their defeat. Not a bad word said against SVG
Nascar has to go international and go race at Mount Panorama.
That would be cool.
Australian NASCAR ram at Mount Panorama
@robertryan7204 I was thinking of a NASCAR International race as they did years ago in Suzuka, Japan I think. During the off-season or just before the season.
It would be great for the sport.
Of even better have Nascar drivers come over and run the supercars.
Sorta let the teams partner with the manufacturer teams for the manufacturers, teams and drivers.
@@mrj3217 Problem the NASCAR drivers would be too slow. Bathurst would freak them out
I’m terrified for them… haha
I really believe how SVG drives using the clutch and heal toe technique even though he doesn't have to helps get rotation into corners.
That extra level of control and rotation really helps along with it helping you break a little better.
I was watching SVG’s onboard camera the whole race, and he was definitely getting the car to rotate more in the mid corner. There were several corners, lap after lap, where he was squaring up the exit, driving straighter off the corner instead of drifting all the way out to the outside wall. By getting the car more square, he could get on throttle earlier, and it helped him avoid some of the painted lines, which are a death trap on a wet street course. He was also gaining a lot of time in the downhill braking into T7, again by squaring up the exit of T6 and driving a straighter line down the left side of Balbo Ave.
Your lucky to see that cos he doesn’t allow a foot camera in his Supercar to hide his technique 😂
@tonystewart7287 he does not need to in my opinion, because I know I can't even move my feet and ankles like that if I tried.
The heel-toe thing is very hard for me.
I use the anti-stall clutch in iRacing and other sims.
I can drive a stick and in a real car, it might be better at it.
On the sim, it is just not Intuitive enough for me to sync up with and not me shifts.
@albinorhino6 exactly man that's what I am saying.
I know using the brake and throttle can help you sorta get the car to turn if your doing it right.
But that also slows your down and burns tires sliding.
Using the clutch and different gears for engine braking helps naturally slow the car down and rotate with out just sliding the tires.
It's so much more controlled rotation.
He is a Championship driver who flew to Amerixa and schooled the NASCAR guys at home.
The comment about him being used to heavy stock type cars around street circuits is partly true. However, having seen him win SRO gt3 at Silverstone in a McLaren, knowing he does rallying & drift cars, the guy is one hell of a driver in any car.
Add sprint cars to that resume as well.
He has a reputation of driving anything
Respect to those drivers who spoke so humbly about SVG. Such a better vibe than what Super Cars has become with the whining from both certain drivers and commentators. I think I’ll be jumping ship to Nascars once he’s there full time.
SVG is a beast.
Watch his highlights from Australian Supercars.
He's a 🐐 over there.
The wet weather and crazy track conditions will always benefit the person you least expect. All the stars aligned and he was able to dominate the field. Good thing he was in fantastic track house equipment and not some lower tier team or it would’ve been a waste! Incredible. A little embarrassing for us nascar fans and drivers 😂
He's a Kiwi, mate - it rains a lot here so they've all got wet feet.
Shane drove that race like Super GT. Awesome run.
You blokes are legends. Let SVG have his moment. You all know he's raced heaps of street car circuits. Kudos to you blokes. Not sore lovers.
Awesome to see the respect each has for each other
Being an Aussie we all know how amazing SVG is. I think Kyle Busch summed it up that he’s far from a rookie in that format. 👍🏼
Shane comes as an Australian Supercars champion so he is really well schooled in ultra tight racing, here is a little taste.
Id love to see Lewis Hamilton do a race next.
Never liked SVG as a supercars driver , but im jumping on the train now 😂
As a Aussies and a fan of most motorsport ,I thought the other drivers comments were great. No doubt Shane has heaps of street and track experience that helped him win. His car he drives in Australia is almost the same as NASCAR . I watch all the NASCAR races and always wish they had more street and track races and fewer ovals. It was great to watch and in no way was it a "easy win". Great show by all.
SVG is one of the most all-rounded drivers I have ever seen I’m so lucky I get to watch him in the supercars
I coukdnt believe my ears and eyes! Had no Idea SVG wascin this bloody race! Soon as I heard his name mentioned my first thought was how are these guys going to beat the best in the world at this type if racing? He races V8 Supercars at Bathurst! Amd overtakes in the twisties after the chicane! I guess they had a chance, but not much of a one. 😂
Only driver in NASCAR history with a 💯 win record!!
Thats what talent gets ya... Daddy's money only goes so far!
Super impressive with out a doubt but lets see this dude full time he’ll make the sport even more entertaining. And also see how he stacks up with the other guys on a oval.
Less ovals, more circuits. That is how you grow the sport.
@@samblack5313 I agree 100% but ovals are apart of the sport too. But also with that said they would need to rotate these oval tracks yearly so they don’t die like north wilksboro did for many many years. Ovals are still part of nascar heritage we can’t just abandon them.
Great respect from these guys.
36 of the 37 drivers were out of their element. The 1 that wasn't won the race. It's not shocking at all.
Only good news for New Zealand at the moment, congrats from Whakatane!
Mad respect Aussie! Whippin dem nascar boys 😊
He's from NZ
THIS IS WHY I HAVE MY NAME! V8 Supercars are the best (maybe second best now with a street course) racing in the world. I obviously watch every V8 Supercars weekend. I am an American and I am not surprised this happened. They race Townsville, Adelaide, Newcastle, Gold coast. All being street courses, and extremely tough ones at that. Chicago is extremely simple in terms of a street course. With his experience and the cars' similarities, lack of other drivers' experience, obviously he's going to crush the field. NOW, we need Scotty Mac in one of these things. When it was those two in Supercars top teams... that's where my name came from. THE BEST racing ever!
Scott Mclaughlin is a beast in sedan street racing
SVG is very good driver. Road circuits are his bread and butter. Let’s put him on a normal NASCAR track, I’m sure he’d do well as he is very talented, but it’s not his usual racing. The NASCAR boys were very humble, even Kyle, a credit to there talent and sportsmanship. Let The NASCAR boys come to Oz and race here. Bathurst ?? Phillip Island?? Townsville?? Come on boys come down under.
Thank's Larson for being real.
SVG has a big advantage over most NASCAR drivers because he can steer in more than one direction.
Don’t forget 16 lap fresher tires on a 2+ mile track.
SBG making Nascar great again
Love to see Larson or Elliott in a Bathurst co-drive just some nascar drivers have a crack at the mountain be awesome to see
Cool to see Haley sitting there in the middle with the top stars in the sport.
That dude was an animal out there. Schooled them all.
how can people be so mad. u could of basically called that wet track his home court against all these nascar drivers.
Australian drivers will generally win road course races…..as they know how to turn both left & right
When Kyle Larson questions if he sucks, SVG is real

I hope he goes, there's not much of a challenge left down under, like Scotty Mac, if he stayed he could nhsve won 10 championship's and no one outside if nz, Oz would know who he is..love to see both in indy
Easily More of a challenge in supercars but to win a championship in nascar must be an exciting prospect
Yeah the Giz
SVG took the Nascar boys to school...Congrats SHANE VAN GISBERGEN.
I have watched Supercars for years and they know how to throw a car around the track.
1. Justin Healey did a fantastic job all things considered!
2. Kyle Larson describing every single dirt racer at tracks he's been to for the first time getting passed by him!!! So that's how it feels!!!
Australian Touring cars are fast, and they have great drivers!
Not to take any credit away from SVG…. BUT…. Put him at any oval and he will probably struggle. The thing with nascar is how many different types of tracks and racing there is because of that. Perfect example was Marcos Ambrose. Drove the same cars and was very good at road courses. But the nascar boys showed up at all the other tracks. Would like to see SVG in nascar if he ever makes the move!
It would be interesting to see him on a roundy roundy track. He does lefty righty tracks all the time.
SVG is full talent.
Kyle Busch said it right!🤘🏻

If you ever needed proof it’s the driver as much as car and strategy this is it.
hahaha SVG being considered a rookie is so wild.
Larson or busch said it best rookie to Nascar, but definitely not a rookie in racing experience. Let's see how Shane handles an oval. Many road course racers struggled on ovals

Gotta respect how honest they were, particularly Chase and Kyle.
No sore losers, that's refreshing.
Refreshing indeed, especially compared to the reaction to Jeffrey Herlings doing a similar thing and winning in US motorcross as an outsider.
Would be interesting to see the best NASCAR drivers come over to Aus and have drives in our category, think it would be great for both categories to develop a friendship like that

As a Kiwi the only thing better than seeing SVG in his element (I suspect even most Kiwis would admit that hoping for a win would be optimistic) was the response from the NASCAR family...and the comments on this clip reinforce just what SVG achieved. This is obviously a brutally competitive series (which I have always enjoyed) but the Project 91 has shown that new drivers (wildcard) can bring a lot to the table .... now to get some of those NASCAR drivers down to Bathurst 😎🤠

He's out of contract at the end of this year. There is an option with his current supercars team for 2024 but I think he'll end up in nascar full time next year. Noone here has the money to compete with what he'll be offered after today's performance.
I still hurt a bit that Haley missed out on a playoff spot, but that's more a stink against the playoffs rather than SVG. He put up an awesome drive, and as someone that wasn't a fan of the Chicago Street race idea, he definitely put on a good show and better racing than I'd expected from this race. Good for him, hopefully we see more of SVG in NASCAR!
SVG passed like 200 wins and 6 championships in 7 or 8 laps, and what he did to get past Elliott and Haley was some of the best racing we’ve seen all year.

It was amazing to see just how much faster he was then everyone else. When he got caught up in the pit stop shuffle, he was ~15 with 20 to go (can't remember exactly).
