      Who are you talking about racing in New Zealand pre-Covid, Kyle Larson??? If so, I had absolutely no idea that he was racing in other countries around the world. If you’re talking about SVG, I thought he was from NZ??? That’s why I’m assuming that you’re referring to KL. Also, if KL was racing down there, what was he racing? I hope NASCAR fans can tune in to watch Supercars in Townsville this weekend and see the racing Shane and the guys normally do on a street circuit. They don’t suck and I know this is a first for some nascar drivers on a street track, but damn you could see the difference in the lines SVG was taking and he came from 18th at one stage to clean up. • @NathanM4A1
      @NathanM4A1 Год назад +11

      This was a first for nearly every regular NASCAR driver, racing on a street circuit. And they all have very little experience running in wet conditions, as until a couple years ago, even a little bit of rain would see a NASCAR race halted. And seeing as there has only been about 5 tracks each season where they could safely run in wet conditions, they haven't had a lot of chances to practice. Juan Pablo Montoya was a F1 and IndyCar winner yet he never won a NASCAR cup race on an oval. Because its an entirely different type of racing. Tony Stewart is one of the best drivers in recent years, and jumping into a drag car, he didn't immediately perform well, because of the difference in disciplines. They are all professional race car drivers, and like all professional race car drivers, they excel at some types of racing more than others.

    Basically no,NASCAR drivers don’t suck. As SVG has stated he races on these kind of street circuits a lot during the V8 Supercars season so obviously he has a hell of a lot more experience than the NASCAR boys. NASCAR don’t race in the wet so the conditions were all new to the way the cars handled. The right angle turns must be hard to negotiate as well (given that they pretty much all looked the same which could get confusing) especially when your used to the long sweeping corners of a NASCAR oval,again SVG is more used to these type of corners so he would know his breaking zones and the speeds he can take them at. As SVG said himself after the race,it would be a completely different story if he raced on an oval! So no NASCAR drivers don’t suck in my opinion,it was a great result for SVG and hats off and well done to the NASCAR drivers for racing and putting on a show in totally unfamiliar settings and conditions. Hopefully this result will boost an interest in V8 Supercars from the NASCAR fans as well.

    • @michaellane1316

      I agree. Nascar would do well to invest into this field. Maybe do 3-4 races with this kind of format. I think it would also be cost prohibited to go all out super car setup, (a dedicated car only), but would sure give an injection to this slowly dying series. Fans are hungry for change. Yes, the super speedways are great but boring. Very similar to the Indy 500. Myself, I like the beginning, middle and end of any oval race, otherwise it is just the same thing. Much prefer open wheeled sprint car racing, almost always more action. This is what attracts fans. Times change, as does the fan base.

      A year on, I've had this gripe with every race, every week. I appreciate the front row action, but more mid and backfield coverage would be more interesting and give all drivers better coverage. There's always loads of little battles to watch, why focus everything on the top 10?

    In Supercars all the drivers use the clutch and heel and toe their downshifts. The Nascar guys don't use a clutch. So SVG is in a left hand drive and using his clutch and brake bias front and rear adjustments throughout the race. THis guy can drive the wheels off anything !

    to say that they suck would be harsh, but the fact that the commentators were bamboozled by the heel and toe technique shows that they are a fair bit behind on street and road tracks. Can you imagine if this had been a car he was dialed in, week in week out?....
    ovals are a different thing altogether, completely alien to anyone not racing in the US, so it would not be fair to make a comparison on that basis...that would like asking Kyle Bush to compete in Rally Sweden, which is on snow.

      Yup. It makes you realize just how much of driving is unconscious thought. Things like positioning the car on the road, sightlines to road markings, and the like. All stuff we don't have to think about in regular driving at home, all goes out the window when you swap sides. Heck, even the rear-view mirror. How many times did you glance at the A-pillar, only to find yourself thinking "wait, where'd the mirror g-Oh Sh..."?

    Nascar drivers dont suck, they just lack experience in street circuit racing! If you want a good laugh look up Channel 7s attempt at Bathurst in 1977 in a Bob Morris prepared A9X Torana where the hot shot American drivers were 10 seconds behind in practice and said the car was no good! Bob did 6 laps in the car and got it within .6 of a second of the lap record , got out and said the car is fine!😅

    For years Nascar hyped the "road course ringers". All of these semi decent drivers from their own discipline was gonna come in and whoop up on them Nascar boys. And they never did. And Nascar got big headed. "Cup drivers are the greatest drivers in the WORLD!!!!". Then a legit road course/street course racer comes in on a brand new street course and beats them and it's an overblown shock to everybody. "Do we suck?". Well, when it comes to racing with a multi time champion on his own playground, yeah you do. Put him on Bristol or Dover and he's gonna suck. I do not understand why van Gisbergen's win is a shock.

    This is what happens when you inject talent into a field of rich kids who bought their way to the series. NASCAR has about 6 or 7 good drivers, the rest just aren't. Larson obviously knows this, Kyle Busch as well, they've essentially said the same thing.
    NASCAR has done a lot to save their lower end talent by making lower horsepower cars with tons of downforce and grip so they're easy to drive. Road racing, and probably more so street circuits, are drivers courses and are challenging enough that talent makes up more than it normally would in a cup car.
