I must say, the Chicago street race was my first NASCAR experience. Being Australian, I watched to see how SVG would do. I have followed SVG as a driver for well over a decade now. He has driven the wheels off so many different types of cars and is pretty good on a dirt bike as well. The man can steer and is a true racer. I dare say, NASCAR gained a whole lot of Australian and New Zealand viewers after this weekend, myself being one of them. My 16 year old son just became a NASCAR fan as well, so the sport should potentially have future generations of fans, from many different countries. The exposure NASCAR just received here in Australia is HUGE. Even people who don't support SVG and follow other drivers have paid him compliments on his driving yesterday. I am looking forward to learning more about NASCAR, how it all works, who the different teams and drivers are, how the oval races work..... I have a feeling I will be watching a whole lot more of it from now on. Cheers Kenny, I enjoyed your breakdown of the race!
New Zealand calling , Loved Kennys comentary and his thoughts of the event. I lived in Charlotte 1980s & worked as a bodyman for Robt Yates when Davey Allison was our driver, We won at Telledaga one time and the shivers ran down my spine when we went to Victory lane that Day in 1989? im over 70 now and living back in NZ and i can tell you that those same shivers ran down me when our Kiwi Driver won this race at Chicago sunday.
Anyone thats followed SVG's career will know that SVG is the master of looking after his tyres . SVG was teasing you all , Anyone in NZ or Aus knew he could win this after quailifying 3rd for the Race . He is a Masterclass Driver .
Luckily I found the in car camera for SVG, he was Mr smooth, and killing it on braking and corner exit acceleration. Talk about a wheel man SVG never missed a mark, then made incredible passing moves on sections of the track no one else thought of. In no way was he a rookie, an oval might be a different story but left and right he was amazing, he could put that car anywhere he wanted wet or dry.
Those Australia Super Cars are used to driving on tight tracks with smaller width tires. I’m glad he was able to show how skilled he is to bring more attention to their race series! Those guys drive the crap out of their cars!
While I know SVG could drive anything fast, V8 supercars are powerful, heavy, and have skinny tyres - smooth is the only way to drive them fast. Tyre conservation skills don't hurt either!
he'll smash ovals, I've been watching him for years in New Zealand . he loves the bumper to bumper and door to door bump and run. ovals might be better for him in I year or two in the game. look out yanks, the flying kiwi gonna give it some jandal ! 🇳🇿🔥
I was one of the naysayers. I was certain there would not have been any passing. I was wrong it was definitely a good race. I can’t remember the last time I was on my feet in my own living room for the final laps. Thanks to Justin Marks for bringing SVG to the party. 18th to 1st. On a track were there would be no passing and driving on the opposite side of the car.
Yes we are very proud of our Gizzy here in Kiwi land he can drive anything to the winning podium we are so pleased America and the world have witnessed our legend in action. V8 SuperCars is so exciting and to see more street racing in your Country will take NASCAR to a new hemisphere with World interest and many more American fans. It's a win win scenario for V8 racing as we like to call it and don't get me started on the GM/Ford rivalry down under 😂😀 it's crazy. New Zealand/Australia here we come America 👍💕🔥👋
Australian here.... firstly, it's just Supercars, the name of our series. Secondly, every fan in Australia and New Zealand knew, when SVG came out of the pit in 18th towards the end of the race, KNEW what was about to happen. That was SIGNATURE SVG. I'm guessing that more NASCAR fans are going to have a late night in October to watch the Supercars take on Mount Panorama, Bathurst. It's our Daytona 500 and it's not only worth watching, it's worth the pilgrimage. As far as the heel & toe, our Supercars require a clutch input on the downshift, so it's a habit.
Can I say that, while we're separate countries, Australia and New Zealand are very close geopolitical, ideologically, and socially. Australians look on New Zealand and New Zealanders as their much loved but annoying younger brother/cousin, you know, the one who's a few years younger and always hanging around. (NZers - kiwi's -, of course, have a different view. It's OK for them to be wrong, though.) With our immigration policies, Australians and Kiwis have free travel and lax residency requirements, with very little restrictions on working and holidaying between the two nations. A LOT of Supercar (and legacy series) drivers hail from NZ and compete in the highest levels of our motorsport. Not just supercars, but our domestic rally series, and drag racing, as well.
Can confirm this. As an Australian, we are used to seeing SVG coming from behind to take out the win. My fave battle is the SVG v Waters race at Pukekohe, but his Sandown effort, qualifying 18th and winning with a broken collar bone and 3 broken ribs... well what an epic win! I have always said I don't think SVG likes getting pole position, I think he enjoys the challenge of chasing them down then leading the last few laps!!
@brucemcpherson1651 see, I wouldn't consider a discovery of landmass to be the defining moment, and we can split the other methods in 2 distinct lines, traditional ownership and European Settlement. By considering traditional owners, my preference, we look at 65,000 years of the Australian Aboriginal people, the oldest continuous culture in the world. Even as the decendant of Europeans, I consider this to be the Metric, but if you wanted to go by European Settlement, Australia 1788, NZ 18-something-or-other..... Then we can talk Geographic size, if you'd like. Or population. 🤣 (And, for the rest of the world, this friendly banter is how Australians and New Zealanders go on. I'll tell you what, though, pick on one or the other, and it's on for both of us)
--for much of the race, it was just one groove ... you venture outside the groove, you wreck ... to me it was a good race because of the skills of this one driver, SVG ... during much of the race he was learning and adapting ... many nascar drivers gave him little room, almost ran him over, he was the newcomer, heck he drives on the left and has a right seat steering wheel in NZ, and shift with their left hand ... he got shuffled to the back ... but he adapted, perservered, and ran a smart race, and he worked his way forward when the track started drying out, had good pit strategy, he was on newer rubber at the end of the race ... well done Shane Van G, you ran a heck of a race and really saved Nascar that day. you kept yr car clean all day, and you just out drove everyone with yr superior skills.
I was one of those people that nascar was trying to catch the attention of with this race. And now let me tell ya I’m a fan for life now ! Excited to follow the series and be a fan!
@@stephenbraden6239 I watch usually only daytona500 and a few other odd races, but this course was goddamn awesome I love it, wanna see the next race now hopefully SVB will do one more before he heads home.
I have to say.. I was wrong on a couple of things. 1. I really enjoyed the race and the finish.. I had my reservations. I was wrong. 2. I wasn't a believer in trackhouse racing.. I was wrong again.. It is amazing what they've done.. I have to say.. GREAT JOB EVERYONE..
The wet track was the reason for most of the excitement in the race - was more fun to watch the race until the track started drying off. The second most exciting part was watching someone in his very first Nascar race show the regular drivers how a real race car driver drives does it. Was fun to watch a very skilled and experienced race car driver for a change. Nascar organization itself did a very good job also.
Am based in Queensland Australia & have spent many weekends at race meetings including Bathurst. I assure you... It really wasn't fair on your local NASCAR crews & drivers to do what they did. Our local Australian touring car scene has always revolved around tricky & treacherous circuits including road courses where braking & cornering are paramount. We also have a habit of climbing & descending hills like at Lakeside Raceway north of Brisbane QLD & damn steep Bathurst New South Wales. I see our V8 SuperCars category has gained popularity all over the world in recent years & I see NASCAR is adopting similar type race cars & similar type tracks to ours. I don't want to upset you guys over there, but all the time you've been going around in circles on banked ovals with hardly any brakes, next to no cornering capacity & on fairly smooth surfaces with caveman crud like steel wheels, we've been developing really capable cars that can stop in a big hurry, get around a sharp corner & put the power down out of corners. It's been this way over here since the 1960s. Our Australian Touring Car Championships have primarily catered for fairly well modified family hack road cars that stop, go & turn corners, whereas NASCAR has traditionally focussed on sustained high speed without all the nasty twisty stop start stuff. Our best drivers including Shane have had years & years of practice in really tough & brutal gladiator style ferocious & frantic cut & thrust racing. It wasn't really fair on your NASCAR people to alter your cars, make them like ours, recreate a street circuit like ours & drop your guys in it with our very best & most accomplished champion. Shane was always likely to put on a good show in an environment set up almost exactly similar to what he is used to & in a car similar to what he's used to, where all the other competitors were tipped into a new & fairly hostile environment. It could take several years for NASCAR people to adapt to severe V8 SuperCars conditions. It was a treat for us Aussies & Kiwis to see SVG slice his way to the front & take the chequered flag in Chicago. Shane made it look fairly easy... It isn't! He's very highly skilled at what he does & it was always on the cards that he'd deliver on the day. The biggest headache your guys face now is a whole swarm of crazy fast Aussie & Kiwi champions heading over there now that they've seen what Shane achieved! If that happens, it'll turn your local motor racing on it's head. Our Aussie motor racing is daunting & challenging & whoever came up with the idea of letting Shane loose in the USA in a new to you guys format, obviously knew what would likely happen. Chicago was a thrilling event. Can't wait to see more similar events in future.
@@raymond7451 I think it's bit alarming. NASCAR has just evolved into something we know all about. Imagine how far ahead Shane will get after he settles into these new NASCARs & after he's familiarised with the competitors. The minute he starts qualifying up the front & gets an early lead, these poor fellas won't see which way he went! We know what he's capable of & if he can win first time out, later race starts will be total carnage as everyone tries to kill each other trying to keep up. NASCAR is a really big deal. It aint good to romp in & hammer the hell outa these guys & SVG has the skill set to do exactly that. They're likely to get a tad pissed off about it & pull out the usual erm... team tactics which send cars into walls in a big hurry. If NASCAR is going down this V8 SuperCars replica path, they need to import more than one accomplished Aussie/Kiwi champion & they have to retrain their crews & drivers immediately. We have at least 10 other red hot steerers here who could have pulled off what SVG just pulled off. This is massively unfair on EVERYONE involved in NASCAR & people/fans could easily get the wrong idea. It aint good to make talented locals look slow because you altered the entire scenario & inserted a top shelf professional from another country. I love SVG to bits. He just does what he does & he does it to absolute perfection & drives away from Aussie wannabes like it's all in a day's work & he does it cheerfully. He's only just got started over there in this new format & if that continues, it'll make headlines that indicate the usual suspects are hopeless. Too much of that will no doubt cause some aggro.
Kenny I'm a longtime follower of NASCAR 46 years Young and I think that was one of the best Nascar races I've seen in a long time I haven't been watching in awhile but that race caught my attention and I really like the durability of the new next-generation NASCAR's that race was awesome 👍🏼😊
As a Kiwi and long-time Giizzy fan, I'd like to say thank you America for welcoming Gizzy. I travel to the States on business once a year and I always love the way American people are so friendly and hospitable. This weekend the world got to see the true America that I know and love.
I'll admit that I was a nay sayer early on about a Cup street race. I had just watched the Nashville Indy car race and was thinking that a street course would be far to narrow and every corner would be a bottleneck fiasco just like the corners at Nashville were. 1 car get sideways and stall in a corner and the whole race came to a stop. And that over and over again got tired real quick. But as the Chicago race came closer to happening and I saw the track layout which for the most part plenty wide for passing, I was getting more excited for it. And the track and race did not disappoint. It was exciting from start to finish. I hope that Cup gets to race there again next year. I was more than okay with SVG winning, even though until yesterday I had never heard of him. Great for him. Great for his old fans and now his new fans. He drove a great race.
I'm not at all mad they got beat buy SVG, he out drove them, took them to school. They will learn from him and be better in the future. He seems like a humble and nice person, I like when the good guy wins. I'd welcome more supercar drivers to race in nascar. It'll be tough with the charter system though, need at least 8 "must qualify" spots
This race was amazing from start to finish. Once I heard SVG was starting third I knew he was a threat to win. I watched the onboard of SVG and that was amazing. This was just amazing. Great job NASCAR.
As a kiwi I can say we are big fans of all types of Motorsport. Only downside is the Timezone and it’s hard for us to find stream sites or programs that show Nascar etc. But don’t worry we are keen and there’s a big push for us to make it so we can see more etc. SVG winning was great for everyone and I hope America become fans of V8 Supercars
I was a detractor of this race, until the xfinity cars took the track, and I saw the enthusiasm of the crowd. As I watched, I couldn't help but think: "This is just like P.T. Barnum bringing the circus to town". Everywhere you looked, people were hollerin' , jumpin' up-and-down, and having a great time! And not a lot of NASCAR shirts & caps, so that meant *new race fans* . My absolute favorite moment was when Kyle Busch pulled a Leroy Jenkins yeet move, and buried his car in the tire pack. He was Hell bent to find some grip, and just went for it. I thought it was cool AF! Great analysis, Kenny. You brought up a couple of great points that most others missed. I don't understand why you are not in the broadcast booth.
I took my wife who could care less about NASCAR. Last night she was up until 2am watching random NASCAR highlights. They definitely earned some new fans.
I can’t say it was a great race. But I can say it was better than I thought it would be. Glad to see a first time cup driver win. But what I liked most how the other drivers had nothing but good comments about how he put on a clinic at the end. He didn’t luck his way in.
I enjoyed the race for so many reasons. The camera work was awesome, the passing was exciting to watch, the commentary was great, seeing SVG drive the wheels off that car having never driven it and knowing he was shifting with his right hand and sitting on the left makes it that much more incredible. 🏁
@@caseycrites3692there was a camera in the car facing behind SVG. So our view was of all the cars he passed..it was awesome. I can try to find the channel if you want it...Not sure if video is still up
It was most definitely a success on the world stage. You now have a new follower here in New Zealand because of it! Awesome work by Nascar! Loved the show.
I was excited about the potential for the race and I wasn't let down. I felt the excitement of a NASCAR race from the 90s and it felt great! NBC and the crew did an amazing job covering it, too. I would love to see more races on city streets!
Hey Kenny Could not agree with you more. Chicago road course was a success. I was very skeptical about this race but l think we seen the most engaging racing in a while. SVG put on a great race and showed how good a talent he is, l hope he comes back to race in Nascar again . As you pointed out the Next Gen car is modeled on the V8 Super car and with Nascar wanting to take their show worldwide l wonder if a Nascar / V8 Super Car series would be something to come in the future. I think 18 Nascar Stars 18 V8 Super Car stars racing against each other at various tracks across the USA, Australia and New Zealand would be something to see. Keep up the great show Kenny
Hey Wallace!!! The rain delay was the best thing that happened for me yesterday. I have been working on my house that my wife and I are building and I forgot to DVR the race. When I got home the race had just started. I am not in the Follower Category and it's ok that you mistakenly put me into the follower category. I made a mistake today too, we're both going to be ok. 😀
K Dub you hit it out of the Park Again, I felt like I was on an Island with you the past few weeks supporting this street race. And Im glad NASCAR Proved the Haters wrong!
I was a big NASCAR fan in the 80" and 90"s. Have not paid much attention for 20 years. Was really curious about this race. My curiosity quickly turned to excitement. Looks like I'm back to being a fan.
And the thing is, there are another 10 or 15 Supercar drivers from Australia/new Zealand that could do exactly the same thing. NO exaggeration! If you haven't checked it out watch the Bathurst 1000 sometime. It is Australia's great race and it is raced on the Mt Panorama circuit in October each year. It is raced over 1000 kilometres (625 miles). It will show you the skills that Supercar drivers have.
Never really followed NASCAR, but lately I’ve found myself watching your channel. Entertaining stuff Mr. Wallace. I do watch V8 Super cars, and I think the road courses are much needed.
That was a great race that guy came from the back and and drove it to the front like he was going to get a ice cream cone he was so relaxed in that seat like he was on a Sunday drive that guy was a hell of a driver some1 going to get him sign
You guys would love v8 Supercars! If you can’t commit to the series, definitely support SVG when he races the Bathurst 1000 in October. 621 mile race, 5+ hours of racing on one of the best tracks in the southern hemisphere
In loved how humble the "beaten" NASCAR drivers were. So complimentary of SVG and not resentful at all. Will watch more NASCAR for sure! Much love from NZ Kenny :)
Yep, I was one of those who thought the CSCR would be a bust, but I really enjoyed it. I rode most of race in-car with SVG and it was a lot of fun. Had to break from the race for about an hour, came back, was under yellow, SVG in 18th, goes green and what a drive to the front! Great race and my guy KB came back for 5th, way to go! Run in the rain, that is good news for race fans, nothing worse than to go long distance to a race and get rained out!
Van Gizzer lines up this weekend for the Townsville Supercars event. 2 days 3 SC races. And yes , it is a street circuit. As good as he is , he is still not guaranteed a win. Another SC driver just competed in the Spa 24hr. First place in class. Adelaide , Newcastle , Albert Park Melbourne F1 circuit and Townsville , Gold Coast are the street circuits and Mt Panorama Bathurst is also a street road circuit for 3 or 4 big events. The NASCAR ovals will be a great challenge for Gizzer , it wouldn't take him long to adapt.
It was an awesome race.I didnt think it would be but i liked it.Need to add a few more like this.Closer to the people. They had to drive like we do when we go to work. The rain was unexpected but it is what it is. Awesome race. The leaders got it right.
I want to give props to the track designers. They are the real heroes. They did not add a lot of tight corners or switchbacks which make the track narrow and 1 groove. The track was wide with long straightaways making almost every turn a passing opportunity. Unlike, Sonoma if you mess up your passing attempt at turn 11 you have to wait an entire lap to try again.
@@Robandcoleaha not really the same driver at all. They didn't even race the same series before Cup. Plus Button was in the same 15 RWR/SHR car at Chicago too which makes the gaffe worse
Great video; this was the first Nascar race i’ve watched live in over 10 years. I couldn’t stand the assumptions of murders and shootings etc in chicago from good ol’ boys who haven’t left a a 5 mile radius in their life time. I absolutely love Chicago, I love motorsports and SVG. V8 Supercars are what Nascar used to be for me, so when I heard he was racing on a street course I knew he’d teach the current line up a thing or two. On an oval I guarantee it would’ve been a different outcome but i’m proud of Nascar for figuring out all of the variables and getting this done. Racers love motorsports, I love drag racing, F1, dirt, road, drifting etc. The more we can have them co exist the better the driving will get and the more venues we can have again for racing. Just love racing y’all, we can achieve so much more by working together instead of saying the chicago race will never work because of crime.
@@motardmike Not sure what this has to do with my comment but go to a nascar race in person and you’ll love it. Oval racing is still racing. In fact, go to an oval race in person and you’ll like it more than a circuit. At a circuit you’ll see the cars for 10 seconds every 2 minutes, at an oval you see them the entire time.
@@tjtotheb The "Lets Go Brandon" chant tells me its time to find a new demographic...none of that Good Ole Boys tag. Followed it since the 70's and yes I'm a Democrat and drive a Ford.
proud kiwi moment!!! heard lots of people saying he beat them at there own game but really they were playing his game all along, not only that but the team got a head start with info from his crew chief. Hopefully in the future nascar runs more street events and a few more international drivers make the trip for wildcards as it really brings a boost internationally to the series and gives it credit on the world stage.
Originally I thought I was not a street fan. Too narrow. This is the first race this year that I watched in real time. Normally I watch the DVR, days later, even when I know the outcome, but I'm a race fan. If its a stock car, I'm watching, V8 SuperCars, no diff! Wish there were more cameras focused back in the pack showing some passing. More passing would have good, but I enjoyed that one. Still hate dirt in NASCAR, but that's for another day.🏁👍🏾🏁🇺🇸 Might have to Chi next year.
This was my first live NASCAR event and I was blown away. Even my wife who couldn't care less about NASCAR 2 days ago stayed up until 2 am watching old nascar highlights
Dude you are psycho dude the nascar dirt race at Bristol was the best race of the year so far an the Kansas race where Hamlin got into Larson at Kansas in the last lap to win
Now imagine how much better and faster Shane could be if they were allowed to cater to his dominant side and custom built a car for him with a right hand side steering wheel with stick shift on his left side? he would have been more beast and at the very least another couple of seconds faster. Not to mention he said it himself he ''left a lot on the table'' as he wasn't fully comfortable with the brake pedal set up as well as other aspects of the car he couldn't have as he would have wanted.
Well said Kenny. I was captivated by this race. "Well done" to organisers, crews and drivers. NASCAR just became an International event. Cheers from Sydney Australia.
I have watched Shane Van Gisbergen since he raced as a kiwi kid at Western Springs Speedway, there doesn't seem to be a series/discipline that he hasn't tried. Well done SVG were so proud of you.
That was one helluva of an entertaining race. I too miss many of the old tracks and not a big fan of all of the "cookie cutter" racetracks. NASCAR needs to do more of this to bring new generation fans. Best podcast online. Truly enjoy your show. Keep telling it like it is.
V8 supercars, world rally championship in a skoda, 24 hour of Le Mans in a Ferrari 488, McLaren 650s GT car, formula ford open wheelers, and D1 drift is a pretty hard resume to beat. SVG is one of the best racers out there.
I've been pouring over V8 Supercar videos on RUclips yesterday and today... They have an excellent primer on the cars themselves. Supercars Championships by Repco....a bunch of videos about 1 1/2 minutes each. Also tons of videos of races, and crashes....good stuff for sure.
I think stuff like project 91 is really important for the push NASCAR is making lately as an organization. Lots of eyes on the boys, different eyes, but still important. I think on each road course nascar should help these teams to bring big names in and get them in a car. I’m talking current supercar, Indy, f1 even if they can manage it. Any new fans this sport can get the better off it’ll be IMO. NASCAR is changing, but it probably needs to in order to survive. Those new eyes will see the talent of our guys. That’s the most important thing.
As many have already mentioned, I knew Gizzy would do very well but for it to actually come to life and take victory is just incredible. just one of many New Zealand legends in Motorsport 🇳🇿
Haha us Australian's like racing everything. I very much enjoyed the Chicago street race, Lots of action drivers put on a great show very entertaining. I hope Dick Trickle and Dale Earnhardt gave a thumbs up from beyond since you mentioned them 👍
Im from Australia and we loved watching the race. Now more likely to visit Chicago. Thats what Nascar does it gets people interested who would never watch it.
It was a spectacular race because of the storm. Wet/dry track and wet/dry tires made for an exciting event and your correct, this Gen car was made for this type of track and the conditions. I didn’t expect it but happy it worked out. PS; not sure if it was 92* full sun, and double file starts/restarts if it would work. Good call to shorten the race, bad time to announce it. Entertaining for sure !
Shane is just one of those dudes who are good at any car they sit in be it sprint cars, rally cars, GT cars, or touring cars. I hope he goes to Nascar as you get sick of him winning every race here in Australia, it'll be nice to see some others have a chance. Shane will be really good on ovals too I'm sure, the guy is a freak.
Kenny you da man, gr8 overview, Im a Kiwi so we support SVG, he is a great driver and he will not disappoint, he will be able to mix it up with the greats in the USA and rest assured he will put on a great show for the viewers and thats what sells coverage of the great races in the USA.
Man Kenny I sure love how you tell it like it is!! This was a fantastic race format in my opinion and overall good race all together!! Thanks for your continued not sugarcoated coverage of all things racing! Keep being you Hermanator!!!
I was happy for the Aussie ... I also said to my dad, he is gonna put these guys to shame. Lol Proud of Larson and Chase as well. When they introduced Shane I was like thats it ... he is gonna kill it. 😊
The worst mistake you can make in racing is invite a kiwi to drive if its raining. Have a look at his co-driver Rich Stanaway . Hasn't driven for a few years, Bathurst Mt Panorama in atrocious conditions and nails it straight out of the pits. What a spectacle.
You've got a heap of Aussies now watching Nascar! Loved this format, hope it works for the US. Also we were on our way back from the MultiGP IO World Cup in Muncie Indiana (took 2nd Place) and getting off the plane in Australia SVG was on our plane 😍
@@mescko and if you haven't noticed, from the cars to the tracks they run. Nascar is just replaying this era. I suppose you're one of those boomers that thinks 1969/1970 were the only years of Trans Am. Understandable.
If you haven't seen the V8 Supercar racing at Bathurst, Mount Panorama down in Oz, do yourself a favour & check out some races down the years. It will knock your socks off.
Nice roundup Kenny, havent watched Nascar much since Ambose left your series, love your new gen cars, they seem more robust than our supercars new gen, SVG has a knack even over here of coming thru the field, tends to back those behind up after pitting and brings his tyres up to temp slower so they last longer. Once up to temp he chases his way thru the field easier with fresher rubber. Big change from his early days of burning his rubber up. Love your items
thank you for getting the name correct, much appreciated that you worked on getting it right , Respect Your story in highlighting the race, funny as, "your the ones i love to argue with" , 😁 priceless
More street races guys ….. well done Chicago … drivers appear to have a lot of respect for each other … enjoyed your show Ken …. Peter in Melbourne Australia
Glad you said that Herman. "Real Racers" of Any Kind NEVER Feel that way. For instance,....... I usually have Bacon and Eggs with my Coffee. TODAY for Breakfast I had KIWI FRUIT. Nice Job 👍 Hats Off to NASCAR for "dancing in the rain " and for Pulling this Off. Cheers ~
Kenny - Did you notice that the first 5 cars were Chevrolets? I have always liked Chevys. My favorite one was the 1956 Chevy which was hard to beat drag racing. I grew up on a farm driving stick shift vehicles in Southern Illinois about 90 miles East of St. Louis. That was an exciting and different NASCAR race in Chicago. I look for SVG to move here and run NASCAR full time in 2025. He would be a good one. Happy 4th of July! Keep up the good work!
Polite correction. Jenson drove the #15 for Rick Ware Racing with support from Stewart-Haas Racing at COTA. Kimi Raikkonen was the driver for Project 91.
Hey Kenny, I'm a similar vintage to you (old) mate... been watching v8's in Australia since "group C" then "group A" and all the way through from the inception of "Australian V8 Supercars". I started out a Peter Brock fan, then when we lost him to tragedy, I started to follow his "apprentices" like Mark Skaife, Craig Lowndes, Garth Tander and a stream of other "Holden Racing team" drivers. Ambrose was the only Tasmanian I can remember joining our ranks, but we have had more than a handful of great drivers come over from New Zillund (bit of Kiwi accent lol) and they have really kept our locals on their toes throughout the years. Jim Richards was the 1st of the Kiwis I remember, he was a master and became well known for telling the crowd from the podium at Bathurst that BOOed him for winning in a Nissan, that they were "A PACK of ARSEHOLES"... that livened up the party fer a while but that was the beginning of Group A, turbos, and cars other-than-Australian in an International class. "Richo" won the respect of Aussies for speaking up for himself, and won the hearts of many more for being a clean, fair, hard charging and FAST KIWI, who also brought his son Steven into the fold here as a teenager. SVG didn't start out in the top dollar teams over here, but he came very close to winning what I think was his 1st Bathurst venture in a second tear team. It was a stall leaving his last pit stop then finding out his battery had also died that broke his heart and chances that day. His talent and behavior earned him better opportunities and he ended up in Roland Dane's crew which had taken over from the factory Holden team. Roland obviously thought he was OK as Shane is in relationship with Roland's daughter nowadays- who is now the "888" team principle. Gis' may be from across the pond, but he is widely loved in Australia due to his performances AND his personality, even though media did not like his avoidance of them early days. He is GOLD guys, treat him well, you won't regret it.😉
Kenny you proved you belong in the the leaders grouo. When you said this was going to be a good race I thought you had lost your marbles. I hoped I was wrong but feared I wasn't, I expected maybe 5 cars to be running at the end of the race with all looking like a modified, hood, front fenders all missing. About 5 laps into the race I said to myself this might actually work out. Yes there were some instances where they missed the corner and hit tire but far far less than I expect. I am pleased to say I was wrong 100% Hats off to NASCAR and Chicago on a job well done.
Right on Herm and a game changer race. Maybe tagging along the week after an Indy Car race and using the track would be cool. See them at Long Beach. Yeah baby. I loved the ok days but agree that they are over. Great memories but the new days are here and looking good. PC thinking is the only thing that will end it. Nuff said. Cheers Herm!
I honestly thought even with the rain playing a role, it was a great race and to see a driver win on his nascar debut that hasn't been done in 60 years was really awesome!
Exactly right!....Time moves on, and so do the opportunities for success, sooner or later you "have to move."..When you can do this and run at Le Mans too you can do anything! The opportunity to grow is now.
I thot Jensen button also drove the 15 RWR car at COTA as well, Kimi was who the project 92l1 car has been driven by so far, but I don't remember it being in the field at COTA ALSO I watched a video earlier today of SVG in a 410 sprint car in Australia and he was super competitive in the car!! The dude can straight up drive a race car it doesn't seem to matter what it is......
Aussie here, it was a fantastic event in the style of my hometown V8 race (Adelaide 500). Well done Chicago, U.S.A & NASCAR.Happy 4th July.
I loved hearing Gizzy rip the Clipsal from my backyard 👍
The Chicago version was wild!
Well put brother. Do a 4th of July skid for us!
You rock
I love the Adelaide circuit it's tight and challenging just the way top drivers like it 👍
I was thinking a similar thing. Some sort of Clipsal Homebush hybrid
Dat clutch kick burnout after the win too!
Made my old man a damn real believer in SVG.

I definitely wanted to see more
Yes we are very proud of our Gizzy here in Kiwi land he can drive anything to the winning podium we are so pleased America and the world have witnessed our legend in action.

It's OK for them to be wrong, though.)
With our immigration policies, Australians and Kiwis have free travel and lax residency requirements, with very little restrictions on working and holidaying between the two nations.
@@petermiddo Cook discovered NZ before Australia so the Aussies are actually the younger but bigger bro
(And, for the rest of the world, this friendly banter is how Australians and New Zealanders go on. I'll tell you what, though, pick on one or the other, and it's on for both of us)
@@petermiddo 👌👍

Great video Kenny. Watching from Australia. That was a great race. No shame in being beaten by SVG, he is an absolute weapon. 😀
@@johnbrooks9523 well said mate , thought the same myself . Literally SVG showed them what the cars capable of at its quickest . Great for our V8s
@@raymond7451
I think it's bit alarming.

Racers love motorsports, I love drag racing, F1, dirt, road, drifting etc. The more we can have them co exist the better the driving will get and the more venues we can have again for racing. Now imagine how much better and faster Shane could be if they were allowed to cater to his dominant side and custom built a car for him with a right hand side steering wheel with stick shift on his left side? he would have been more beast and at the very least another couple of seconds faster. The most impressive part of SVG is he got caught with his pants down too, just like Bell, but he got all the way back to the lead.

We have waited forever for NASCAR to hit street circuits bravo from Australia yous put on a great show
I was happy for the Aussie ... I also said to my dad, he is gonna put these guys to shame. Lol Proud of Larson and Chase as well. When they introduced Shane I was like thats it ... he is gonna kill it. 😊
Hey, he is NOT an Aussie. He is from New Zealand.
@peterobertson2086 ok ... my bad ... "New Zealander" or "kiwi"
@@mirandahurley4784 That's like calling a Canadian an American for future reference
@@mirandahurley4784
He drives for an Aussie team with Aussie cars.. Kiwi's would be nothing without Australia.
@@petesmitt😂😂😂
Refreshing to see SVG up there. Good job Justin Marks.
The worst mistake you can make in racing is invite a kiwi to drive if its raining. Have a look at his co-driver Rich Stanaway . Hasn't driven for a few years, Bathurst Mt Panorama in atrocious conditions and nails it straight out of the pits. What a spectacle.
Love the Herminator speaking the facts! Chicago was a grand slam!
You've got a heap of Aussies now watching Nascar! Loved this format, hope it works for the US. Also we were on our way back from the MultiGP IO World Cup in Muncie Indiana (took 2nd Place) and getting off the plane in Australia SVG was on our plane 😍
Nascar is just taking a playbook from 1988 SCCA Trans Am racing. Worked out well. Felt like a throwback to those times watching this race.
1988? How are old are you? Trans-am dates from 20 years earlier, back in the golden years.
@@mescko I was 10 years old in 1988. That was the peak in SCCA trans am racing. My dad worked the street courses and the crowds were awesome.
@@mescko and if you haven't noticed, from the cars to the tracks they run. Nascar is just replaying this era. I suppose you're one of those boomers that thinks 1969/1970 were the only years of Trans Am. Understandable.
I loved it!! Been through 3 rain delays at Fontana! And I’ll betcha Goodyear is designing a whole tire 🛞 for this series!
I was totally wrong about this race and the interest from non nascar fans was very strong
Don't forget also..that McLaughlin, now in Indy, was the unbeatable in V8 Supercars before The Giz....
Yes anyway you look at it, it was a Big Win for NASCAR, Trackhouse, SVG & the Fans. 😎😎👍
thank you for getting the name correct, much appreciated that you worked on getting it right , Respect
Your story in highlighting the race, funny as, "your the ones i love to argue with" , 😁 priceless
More street races guys ….. well done Chicago … drivers appear to have a lot of respect for each other … enjoyed your show Ken …. Peter in Melbourne Australia
Remember, they used single file restarts. Had they not, it would’ve been a shit show 😂
Glad you said that Herman.
Thanks Kenny keep the track chat happening 😎👍
Kenny I was surprised how great Chicago did with the street road course. Pretty Damm Cool racing.
It'd be cool if they made a July 4th tradition by having Indycars, Trans-Am, and NASCAR over 4 or 5 days of racing at the Chicago street course...imo
Chicago street race was the best Cup race I’ve seen in a long time, And I watch all the races.
Xfinity race was so so.
Polite correction. Jenson drove the #15 for Rick Ware Racing with support from Stewart-Haas Racing at COTA. Kimi Raikkonen was the driver for Project 91.
The team (company) that was contracted to build the Nashville street course is fronted (owned) by a USA based New Zealander.
Great video Herm, keep them coming
Jim Richards was the 1st of the Kiwis I remember, he was a master and became well known for telling the crowd from the podium at Bathurst that BOOed him for winning in a Nissan, that they were
"A PACK of ARSEHOLES"... that livened up the party fer a while but that was the beginning of Group A, turbos, and cars other-than-Australian in an International class.
Jenson Button did not drive the 91 in COTA, it was Kimi Raikkonen in the 91 and Button in the 15
Chicago was a HUGE gamble. I was a skeptic, but hell, it was a fun race to watch
Evolution.....hell of a thang.
Exactly right!....Time moves on, and so do the opportunities for success, sooner or later you "have to move."..When you can do this and run at Le Mans too you can do anything! The opportunity to grow is now.
I thot Jensen button also drove the 15 RWR car at COTA as well, Kimi was who the project 92l1 car has been driven by so far, but I don't remember it being in the field at COTA
ALSO I watched a video earlier today of SVG in a 410 sprint car in Australia and he was super competitive in the car!! The dude can straight up drive a race car it doesn't seem to matter what it is......
