  • Living abroad, having the freedom to travel and work from where you like is a unique opportunity that has only recently become a viable option to many people.
Naturally, freelancing is a job many people who do not own a business choose to do. It allows you to build up experience working on other client businesses and also gives you the option of creating your own client base and freelancing business from any remote location.
Upwork and sites like it have created a platform for companies to hire freelancers. They are controversial and many believe they are being priced out of the market.
In this video, I try to take a look at the bigger picture and explain why these sites are beneficial for long-term business growth and attaining the freelancing business that will give you the freedom you desire.

Thank you so so much! I needed to hear this! I just started freelancing the first of February and have been using freelancer and upwork. I have found it so frustrating that clients don't just magically fall out of the sky. But I needed that reminder that I have to start from the bottom and work my way up. Thank you for that reminder!

Hey Brett. Subbed due to this video. You described this all very well and from a simple, practical perspective. I have been struggling finding happiness in the 9-5 grind and recently have begun teaching myself web development. Once I have a portfolio together, I will be signing up for these sites and getting my own website out there for potential clients and, with any luck and a lot of hard work, I will be leaving the US and living in Southeast Asia, myself! It's very cool to see someone living a life similar to what I want to live, so thanks for reaching out to people on RUclips and sharing your experience and advice!

have fun and more. What do you do?
I just started freelancing on Upwork.
I created the best possible portfolio for myself.
And started applying job after job.
I did around 90+ proposals in a span of 3 months.
Before i got 2 graphic design job just recently.
Just make sure you actually read the job description, and make sure your grammar is correct.
A little bit of ass kissing is not bad as well.
      Good Luck!

Chiang Mai is fantastic. There is so much here that I can't get it all sorted out. It will just take some time. That's where your videos are so valuable. Now that I am here, I enjoy seeing locations in you videos that I recognize from having driven by them. All of this is so different from what I have experienced, it's not so much culture shock but more like culture curiosity. But I really like everything.

Hi Brett. I'm a subscriber to Chris the Freelancer. I came across a video in which you and Chris collaborated on the topic of freelancing. I appreciated your your insight and candid statements about the lifestyle. I'm looking to start a remote business focused on travel consulting and booking clients on travel. I've been a nomad for about ten years now. I worked nine summers in Alaska and the Yukon as a tour guide and have done a fair bit of travel on my own time. I just subscribed to your channel. I look forward to going through your archives and seeing what you have planned for the future of this channel. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.

It may take time to generate jobs. Keep plugging in at sending proposals. Now some of the other sites charge a monthly fee and I'm not ready to pay out of pocket just yet. As far as the UpWork proposals, out of 21 sent I got two hires. Not stellar, but it did bring me in work. I hope you have success with which ever site you choose to work with.

I was sort of on the right track in 2017 starting a web design business, but completely missed the mark because I was only focused on money. I actually hate building websites and while I can do it and do it well I don't enjoy it, or do it as well as my other skills that I actually am passionate about. This meant I wasn't motivated to do the whole customer acquisition thing.
I love mixing music, and I love voice acting. For some bloody reason it didn't occur to me until watching this video that I should focus on those! Had a quick look on Upwork and sure enough there's loads of opportunities for me, so thanks for this video and when I stop through Chiang Mai I'll be sure to buy you a beer 🍺

Hey there man I appreciate you making this video for all of us interested in freelancing. I have been freelancing on fiverr for a while now converting power point presentations to video and other tasks. I can honestly say that freelancing can be a great way to make some extra money.I have personally made over $400 just freelancing. My next step is to take what I do on Fiverr and promote it on upwork, freelancer, guru and the others for more pay. I know I am worth more than what I have been receiving, so I am going to take myself to the next level. I appreciate your candid advice and knowledge on this subject of upwork and other freelancing websites. Keep up the good work!

    Hi.
I had been going thru your videos and found them extremely helpful.
I have written down the books you suggested and am going thru the html, css, javascript, jquery and boot strap.
I have a regular job and have to take out time. Gradually I'll buy the other books you suggested and also the photo shop on linda.

Although you specified 6 months but it may take longer for me.
English is not my mother tongue so need adjustments.
I am also going thru your other videos on your web site which we definitely find good cure to find jobs online.
I would be very grateful to God if he creates more people like you who goes out of the way to help.
Do you have training courses available online. Please let us know.
    God bless you.

Brett, love you channel. Quickly about upwork...I just tried to create an account and I ran into a problem. The platform would not let me update my business address and as a result I am unable to submit a proposal on jobs. They have no "contact us" info so now what? This D-level type of platform is something that people will not trust or use. If a platform is not seamless and easy to use people won't use them. Too bad for upwork. I'll look for another, better designed platform. Keep up the great work on your channel!

Thanks for the informative and straight talking videos Brett. They are greatly appreciated. I am currently entering year 5 of a biomedical degree which I've been studying in the evening after my job as a carpenter. I was all set for applying to medical school until I paid a visit to Thailand a year or so ago. I fell in love with the country instantly! Having enjoyed using the data software 'R' at university, I have decided to give web development a go. I have signed up to a course on Udemy. Hopefully I'll be able to sustain myself in Thailand in the not so distant future. Thanks for all you help and advice.

Brett Dev I have always been quite artistic , I enjoy drawing and painting. I find coding quite satisfying in a weird way? I figured if I can design and build something that somebody else can enjoy, then there's a reward in that. I looked into working as a doctor in Thailand. You have to have excellent written and spoken Thai skills and obviously a medical license from the UK. My Thai is limited to Nana Plaza level farang pleasantries at present, so it's a tall order. We will see what happens...

As you know I'm intending to relocate in CM and this is great food for thought on how to generate some extra bucks and, most importantly for me, keep the brain from vegetating. My son, who is dual UK and Thai national is coming over to take in SE Asia and wants to generate income whilst travelling. He has the advantage of recently graduating with a media based degree. One of the problems I had with a couple of freelance worksites a couple of years ago was confirming my qualifications in order to receive a profile flag that would show the qualifications and present my profile when one of their clients was searching for someone to do a project.
At the time, I was self-employed and freelancing after a 40 year career in accounting, auditing, and financial management. I had three international professional certifications. I had successfully held financial management, audit, and consulting positions in the USA, Europe, the Middle East, and Asia. Yet, I failed the accounting qualification tests that those websites used. The reason for failing? The tests were structured for people whose entire accounting experience was based on the accounting system in India before India began adopting IFRS. The company would not accept my international certifications as a substitute for their own online test. At that point, it was no longer worthwhile for me to attempt freelancing through any of those websites.

Hey thanks for the info. I am a little worried about not being able to get people to hire me because even though I've been writing for 20+ years professionally, most of my work has been published internally and I didn't keep any clippings and there's not way to access them online. I do have a few articles published on LinkedIn, but don't have a real portfolio. I know that if I can get those first few, I'll knock their socks off, but it's getting those first few. Any suggestions?

I had one job actually but the customers flaked out at the end. I want to focus on translating texts from english and french and doing some graphic design, and admin support, is there any advice you give out to be able to land my first jobs? thanks> I subd btw

Upwork take 20% of your fee but I guess once you have contacted a client and done some work for them you can get repeat business fom that client directly and cut out Upwork altogether.

I don't understand why people complain about Upwork. Because you can't earn a mountain from a mole hill? People want to make a lot of money without putting in half of the work. Hard work, works! Everyone starts off low, but if you keep with it, then you'll make it. Simple as that.

Hi, I'm Claire. I just would like to say that this is really very helpful to me, I'm only about to start as a freelancer and I'm still gathering more knowledge about this job. Do you think that I've got any chance to work as a freelancer? I would not want to give up that easily, but it's really very hard as a beginner. Thanks a lot for the great video. I wish you more success in the future. God bless.

Hey Brett, If you were cursed with a hard to pronounce Slavic last name like myself (Todosiev), would you consider going by a different name on UpWork and other platforms in order not to scare potential clients away?

    • @brett_dev
      @brett_dev  6 лет назад +2

+Captain Capitalism To-Do-Siev. Vey-Ner-Chuck. Break it down and embrace it. It's a cool name and isn't scaring anyone.

    • @ArtyCraftZ
      @ArtyCraftZ 6 лет назад

Brett Dev We don't carry the same stigma Indian and ME freelancers do, but It's still there (and for good reason I imagine).
People have told me that the To-Do part is hard to pronounce, so I thought about shortening my last name name to Dosiev. It's much easier to pronounce and simplicity is everything these days.

I'd like to subscibe to your opinions but I'm not having a good time on freelancer.com. Maybe the scams have got worse (usually potential clients demanding deposits) since your video, I'm not sure. I've been freelancing as a graphic designer for 25 years but have only just recently decided to go online to look for work. I have found all responses to my bids so far have been from people demanding deposits. I'll watch as many other videos as I can but I'm a bit skeptical.

Gara Gara Kalkun. Have a great profile picture, write a good compelling profile overview, add samples of work you have completed as a team member and individually and write really good concise proposals. It's now 92 days on Up work for me and I've completed 11 projects, have 3 ongoing and have grossed $2,300. So you can be successful on this platform. Good Luck Friemd
