At 66 this makes the most sense for me. Have tried for increased speed in the past (current 95 Avg), but a consistant swing gets away from me if I try any faster, working on smash in now my goal. Will put this into practice. Thank you for the realistic approach. Enjoy and learn from each vid.
flexibility is the easiest thing to work on at any age though. The problem is the average amateur doesn't want to put in the work in improving their fitness. Stretching every day, rotational exercises with weights, and cardio can go a long way alongside technical skill improvement to increase distance.
@@ademiranda2 Very true. And also in response to Ivan, this is just the ‘pump drill’ which has been around for ages. He must not search the internet too often....
This might be the most important golf instruction that I have ever received. I was swinging my driver between 105 and 108. I was driving, on average, about 245 with a max of around 270. A lot of those drives would find their way to the left (I’m left handed), and some of those would disappear into the trees with a huge banana slice. I am getting a bit older and I want to keep playing this game for a long time, I’m 47. I watched this video and decided to slow my swing down to 95 mph (like the LPGA). It took a couple rounds and a few range sessions to get used to, but, on Sunday, I hit 3 drives further than I have ever hit a golf ball. According to Arccos - 288.7yards, 290.4 yards, 290.1 yards and if I hadn’t miss-hit 2 drives in the 220 yd range, my average would have been 270yds (MY OLD MAX) Slowing my swing has allowed me to control the width of my swing and this control my hands and the club head. I am now CRUSHING my drives, so thank you. Now I have to find the video, from you, that will transform my under 100 yard shots. THANK YOU MATT!!!!
I've been working on this for the last week or so after having a bout of the shanks. It really helped get me back to the center of the clubface. Much better than the other drills I've tried and even ones that a PGA golf instructor gave me. Thank you.
Mr. Short Game, As you can see I had commented on your video 5 days ago, As I had just started playing golf in May of this year I have been struggling all along in particular with driver, hitting it all over the face and all over the place. Since watching this video I am finally getting both pretty good consistency (relatively in the fairway or just off) and slightly more distance. This has been the most helpful golf video I have watched on RUclips to day and man I have watched a ton of them! Thanks a million - Dom
Best golf teacher on RUclips hands down. Different yet simple approach and i dont fall asleep. Many of your tips have changed my game, cutting board being #1
This is exactly what I've been thinking about. I was trying to max out my speed, and causing a lot of back problems. I've never been a flexible person in my entire life, and I'm now more interested in maxing out my game as much as I can without overemphasizing distance.
every time I see your videos I get so motivated, last week I went to play and someone told me don't make a big swing, make short swing and you will always get in to the fare way (I am 6.1 and fit guy) I am always trying to hit very hart but /i always end on the rush or rocks, so with your video I will definitely consider the john Rahm swing short and consistent. thanks bro you rock
I have geared down my swing speed 🤗 70% to 80% swing speed and working the ball with fades and draws with a better ball strike which results in less distances but scores are par or birdies in 2021 instead of par, birdies, bogeys and double bogeys in 2020 🤗 using a low compression ball is helping ✅
Thanks again Matt. Love your training room. I can remember when I 1st started watching your instruction videos.......in your back yard! Haha. You’ve come a long way and envited us along. Thanks again for your willingness and patience to help us out.
Excellent information, I have really been trying to improve the smash factor. This is one of the few videos to concentrate on the smash factor, thank you.
Great video..ANGLE OF ATTACK..is so important..more important then speed..I believe my swing speed is 112 ..and I push 280..but the attack angle I can bring it down to 110 more control and more distance!!
Matt, I think you are spot on with trying to get the most efficiency out of what you have. More people should really be trying to hit the ball in the center than trying to swing fast. Also, I'm not getting 40 yards of roll-out on my municipal course's fairways... 😆
Athalonz? SWEET! Your mention of the lower back is huge. I have several students swinging at 82.5% to bring everything under control. Love this approach. A guy asked me why I hit 8 iron on this par 3, I asked what he hit, gap wedge. I said, mine is 10 feet from the hole and your in the trap short.
Great lesson Matt - you demonstrated what I feel on that pured shot that happens several times a round. It also plays into what I’ve doing in my backyard work....
Very very interesting drill Matt. It's going to look a little strange at the range this weekend but will give this a shot, I really like the ease of the swing!
The one particular swing I had this past fall was a relaxed extension at impact. I have not been able to capture that feeling since . What you say leads me to that special memory I can’t want to forget. Your swing today reminds me of my memorable swing. I need to ask where are the worn marks on your golf shirts when you take the backswing? I think your nose is near the top of your left shoulder. Hogan never showed his worn marks on his golf shirts. Great tip thanks
New logo looks awesome Matt! Thanks for posting! Been searching for this exact thing. Going through chemo has made me loose a lot of strength and speed and also very in consistent with my approach irons.. Been going back and forth clubbing up and down. Half the time short and the other half sky it over the green. It’s pretty maddening when you are used to hitting the green! 🤣 I’m really going to work on this! Thanks!
Hey Mr. SG 🤣, love the videos , so explanatory. At 58 yrs young I’ve learned to slow my swing down 3/4 swing and I’m hitting it longer and straighter. Keep it wide. Thx you 🍻
been working on this a while the right elbow getting tucked in to the body creates more centre body mass because your right arm is closer to the centre of rotation equals power
Hey thanks for putting this up! The very first video I watched of yours had to do with the short chip shot from just off the green. And I've been watching all of your videos since. Most of the time I forget to hit the like button. (my apologies) but what's not forgiving is I've never hit the subscribe button. (my apologies also) "click". Love your content thanks!
Your drill is Harvey Penick’s magic move...Penick’s magic move was basically initiating the downswing and move to the ball by placing the heel back to the ground and moving weight transfer a little more on the left side. The key however is when you are doing this to allow the elbow to move down to the hip.
I just have to comment agin, just returned from the range, this power elbow move is amazing! Like pulling the trigger! It initiated the power to impact and follow through! Thanks Matt
Im so happy i found you, so much bullshit instruction on youtube, but this is not one of them, i have been down at lowest to 5.7 hcp, 29 years old and i have seem everything in terms of instruction, but this guy just does it for me, keeping me entertained at the same time as well, love the energy, love the easy to understandnteaching, and love how you make sense of it all, you helped me anlot in just a couple of DAYS, 10000000 thanks from Finland, and keep doing what you are doing because this is what you are destined to do!!!
When do you “feel” that you are extending the trail elbow prior to impact and do you extend the elbow first then release the trail wrist afterwards ? Thanks
Yo get Smash Factor by dividing the ball speed by club-head speed. If these are the same for say 2 shots, the only other determining factor is strike. For instance: Club Head 92mph, Ball speed 128mph. Off centre strike = SF of 1.40 and carry of around 195 yards Club head 88mph Ball Speed 132 from a centre strike. SF of 1.50 and carry of 206 yards. Strike is king
how helpful would you say the pressure mat is with teaching and understanding weight distribution/transfer. I have spoke to V1 a little and would love to hear from an actual user.
In the past I’ve heard you say to turn the screw. What exactly is that? I didn’t hear you mention that in this video. Is it part of achieving a higher smash factor? Thank you, keep up the good work.
At 40 I can get my club head over 120mph but still lucky if I drive the ball 220. Saw Matt's lagshot review earlier today and plan on checking those out.
Matt I struggle with getting onto my left heel through rotation . Is there a video you have in that? I know it’s a production of firing the hips but I’d rather have a drill and have it happen the. Have to think about it at impact
Definitely merit in this approach. Bobby Jones and Gene Sarazen were not the tallest guys and they did it with hickory shafts and small club heads. I’m sure this was part of their game.
At 66 this makes the most sense for me. Have tried for increased speed in the past (current 95 Avg), but a consistant swing gets away from me if I try any faster, working on smash in now my goal. Will put this into practice. Thank you for the realistic approach. Enjoy and learn from each vid.
Wow! A teacher that really teaches us something instead of repeating the same old clichès.
This is the most sensible video I've seen in ages everyone is advocating fast swing speeds which is great if you are young and flexible
flexibility is the easiest thing to work on at any age though. The problem is the average amateur doesn't want to put in the work in improving their fitness. Stretching every day, rotational exercises with weights, and cardio can go a long way alongside technical skill improvement to increase distance.

Realistic is the a great way of describing him.
Love it! The progression of your channel has been amazing! You're on your way brother!

Interesting - I have had back problems too so your comment resonates. Maybe I'll give this a try too.

I used this drill today on practice swings at Pacific Grove Golf Links! I played some of the best golf maybe I ever have! Thanks Matt!

Love the slow-motion! Helps a lot!
I was thinking the same thing - one of the best aspects of the video actually.

Same question that I had a month ago on when to extend the right elbow and in what direction in order to achieve “proper extension”
Great stuff Matt! Focusing on improving smash factor allows every golfer to be the most efficient ball striker they can be!
Athalonz? SWEET! Your mention of the lower back is huge. I have several students swinging at 82.5% to bring everything under control. Love this approach. A guy asked me why I hit 8 iron on this par 3, I asked what he hit, gap wedge. I said, mine is 10 feet from the hole and your in the trap short.
Great video. Question for you,can you do a video for us older guys with a bad back for hitting driver?
Coming soon.
Great lesson Matt - you demonstrated what I feel on that pured shot that happens several times a round. It also plays into what I’ve doing in my backyard work....
Great!!!
Thanks for Sharing!
Just did this a bunch of times while in my home office choked up on a 7 iron. Love it! Great in home winter drill! Mint!
Can’t wait to try this. Makes so much sense 👍
Nice Logo dude!! Impressive!
Great video Matt ! Also love your new studio and the logo sets it off. Keep up the great work!
Great logo!!
Great instruction!
Logo just what the studio needed! And good striking ideas too, my practice swing usually feels better than when i swing harder to hit the ball
Great tips and video! This has helped me out in my swing and distance..
Excellent content, simple and understandable. Thank you
Great tip Mr. Short Game! Love the wall logo...
Very very interesting drill Matt. It's going to look a little strange at the range this weekend but will give this a shot, I really like the ease of the swing!
Great explanation Matt
Great video! I’m going to incorporate that drill into my pre-swing routine !
Loving the tips Mr SG. Can't wait to try some out at the range and course.
Took this tip to the range today and got my confidence back with my swing. Thanks 🙏
Will definitely have to give this a try.
So useful. Thanks so much.
G'day Matt, this ties nicely into your tip about using the lead shoulder to commence the downswing. Will try this drill in the morning. 👍⛳
Really one of the best videos I’ve ever seen. Thank you 🙏

Awesome tip my friend, I have low club head speed and need any tip/trick I can use for more distance
best tip ive ever gotten , on grip video!
Excellent video! Thank you Mr. Short Game!
Love this Mr Short guy! So this the magic move! U R Great,
Great video!
So this is the secret of the accidental great shot! Great Logo !
Nice Matt finish😁

Mr SG, good advice. Love it.
LOGO MAN!!! How awesome is that!
This really works for me... bring that right elbow in and all is good. Good tip here
Hey Mr. SG 🤣, love the videos , so explanatory. At 58 yrs young I’ve learned to slow my swing down 3/4 swing and I’m hitting it longer and straighter. Keep it wide. Thx you 🍻
I have to learn a 3/4 swing - my backswing always gets too long but whatever effort I make it always seems to creep back in.
been working on this a while the right elbow getting tucked in to the body creates more centre body mass because your right arm is closer to the centre of rotation equals power
Super tip, god bless

That looks better for my back ! As soon as lockdown in England buggers off !

the logo is great
Great lesson. MSG.
Kudos on the new logo. Yes you had a blank “billboard “ as a back drop, might as well take advantage 👍

A year later, I'm curious, is this still something you go to in practice or maybe even on the course if you feel your swing getting away from you?
Just did a few swings in my warehouse and now dying to hit a few balls on the range . Amazing feeling.
I just subscribed to this channel and your podcast!! Love the content!!!😎💪🇺🇸🏌️♂️
Nice drill. I will try it at the range next time. When I get into the mindset of trying to smash the ball, I lose it. I think this will help.

Seems like narrowing would introduce more backspin and less distance! NES pas?? Thanks brother!🙏🏻
When do you “feel” that you are extending the trail elbow prior to impact and do you extend the elbow first then release the trail wrist afterwards ? Thanks
Love this tip! Does it change at all for different clubs? (Assuming you're looking for the distance rather than a chip/pitch etc...)
yes. this is the way !
The logo..mat finish 😂..oh yeah, a a get video and drill also! Keep 'em coming!
Love the channel bro! You should call that the "Charles Barkley drill"! 😂🏌️♂️👌

What shaft are you using in your irons?
Definitely merit in this approach. Bobby Jones and Gene Sarazen were not the tallest guys and they did it with hickory shafts and small club heads. I’m sure this was part of their game.
Small guy was generating “only” 101 mph with driver. LOL. His clubhead speed with 8 iron (84 mph) is what I get with my driver 😳
If I could get to 101, I'd be THRILLED! AT 68, I'm not going to be holding my breath.
