Another great video this week shows more of the behind-the-scenes. Chief Engineer Alex and Steve did a great job showing what it takes to fill up Loon as we prepared to cross the Atlantic Ocean to start our summer season in the Mediterranean. Next week, the crossing starts 😎
Keep it up. There is no such thing as too much behind-the-scenes👍
I am going to 'guess' it this way. $4.00 per gallon with 35,000 = $120,000 USD. 🤞 this is close 🤣
@@FLGurl You know, at some point you'll be able to use a micro nuclear plant to fuel these things. I'm guessing 10-15 years before they are feasible. Several different versions under development.

$105.1'ish
I think they filled the bedrooms and the kitchen up with Diesel🙈

I agree: $105,000
would've been cool to have a timelapse of the waterline. Just to see how much the boat is now lower than before.
Maybe for next time.
Should be able to control the water line with ballast so it probably stays the same.
@Tb0n3 10:02 quote "she's sitting a bit heavier in the water now"
As a Fuel Roadhouse owner in the outback of Australia that was fascinating to see the safety, checking of fuel quality and decanting systems. Seeing that amount of pipeline was interesting. For us that amount of fuel in Australian dollars would of cost us $263,340.00. That's about as much fuel as we take in a month. Following this channel because of the Aussie chef, we lived in Airlie Beach for 11 years. This channel just keeps on surprising. Thank you for allowing us to see how behind the scenes of the yachts routines and how all the operating systems work.
are there a bunch of taxes imposed on road fuel in australia like they do in europe ?
Yes, almost 50 cents a litre in fuel excise tax. And then 10% GST as well. Unleaded 91 octane is about $2.20 at the moment. So without taxes it would be about $1.50 a litre.
If you were refueling in Oz it would be similar pricing as in the video given vessels do not pay road tax.
@@SamS-gn4vl Assuming you're talking about AUD - here (the Netherlands) 1 litre of 95 octane (E10, so ethanol is added), would be 3.14 AUD a litre.. :')
To be fair we have the highest gas prices in Europe if I'm not mistaking. :')
“Would have cost us” or would’ve, not would of!
I've got so much respect for the work chief engineer Alex does.
His work is most of the time behind the scenes, but without his hard work, Loon couldn't function at all.
So, kudos to Alex!! 👊🏻
And saying "hallo" to you all from the Netherlands. 🤗 🇳🇱
that is so cool that the fuel manifolds look the same on a yacht as they do on a warship. the few times we refuelled in port instead of underway at sea, it took us two days to take fuel from the 50 tanker trucks that pulled up one by one over the two days. refuelling at sea its a lot faster about 2-3 hours to take the same amount of fuel from the 50 trucks from land.
Wow
As a guy who's taken on/pumped off millions of gallons of fuel, methanol and assorted other potentially nasty stuff, on an assortment of commercial vessels, I was very impressed by Loons professional crew...again.
YES! Quite different than the typical gas station owner operating our little TLS system 🤣
About $150k. Loving a look at the technical side of running Loon. It’s like a Swan - all above waterline is Serene and composed and below the waterline is all frantic to keep things running smoothly.
Description of MY fueling is helpful to those of us who will never experience the magnitude nor technical aspects of fueling. Many might focus on the purchase price of a vessel in this class but this video gives a glimpse of the type of on-going cost of supplying and staffing involved. I call this the cost of waking up every morning ... hard for us of limited wealth to imagine.
Correct, this kind of asset/toy is for billionaires!
Anyone wanna go halves?
More engineering videos please! These are a lot of fun.
Nooooo!!! Dont care about guages, pumps and valves. More of the Girls!! Stew's All Day!!

Well done ya’ll. Safe voyage in the med
The crew is spot on and very similar to how we ran a fuel farm for Jet-A for private and commercial customers.
Love the professionalism of a top tier yacht crew.
Having a chief engineer like Alex is such an asset to Loon. Obviously biased as a fellow Brit but he seems to really know his stuff, and be professional but super chilled out.
Bravo for this very interesting and instructive video. I did not imagine such procedures to supply a ship like this one.
Make sure you use your reward card for points.

Nice work Alex!
❤ love these stories. You all look do professional. 🎉 thanks for sharing. Loon is amazing 👏
This video was GREAT. I learned so much about bunkering. (Landlocked Texas gal. Boats are foreign to me.) I especially loved the long shot along the pumping tubes. What a distance! I have no idea how much this costs (Texas gas prices vs. Florida gas prices??) But I can't wait to hear the numbers. Cheers to Engineering Chief Alex and the rest of the Crew🥂
Its sounds as if fueling would be boring, but no it was not. Its amazing all the prep that had to be done. Then the fueling, the care and attention to details of the tankers and their cargo. Making sure no spillages yhe smooth filling of Loon's tanks. It was a well planned team operation and gives us all another side to what makes the glamour t that the guests will see and experience.
No fuel no go. 😊
It is the magic of editing. 5 hours of fueling. Probably another 3 or more of prep work. If this was an 8 hour video it would be extremely boring.
Another awesome video. Love the behind the scenes stuff. Brings a new respect for the work each different specialty onboard does to keep the whole thing running in top shape. Really fun to watch!😊
I was very impressed with the video when you say how much fuel that you have to load on to the loon it sounds like a lot of fuel but when you actually show the fuel trucks and how many of then you can truly understand the volume that she holds
Its crazy that it all fits onboard
Very cool video. Always interesting to see the logistics of managing all of the components of the M/Y Loon operation (especially behind the scenes). Have a great and profitable summer season!!
I just learned I’d probably not do well working engineering on board M/Y Loon. I suck at paperwork 😂
I’m guessing around $125,000 for full tanks.
It’s interesting. I’ve heard the volumes before, but until you see the 5 trucks needed to fill Loon, it’s hard to truly comprehend the volume. I’ve not hauled fuel, but I’ve run liquid tank before, so really understand the sizes we’re talking.
It almost seem like she’s a thirsty beast, but when you consider that’s enough for a round trip Miami, Med, Miami, it’s not that bad.
Cheers guys. Thanks for another awesome video
Price? $150,000. My guess. It's diesel (code 1993), estimating $4.25/gal. Converted 133,000 litres to 35,135 gal.
I am still amazed at how complicated a system like Loon is. Yes I see it as a system. I worked in aviation, and what you do has analogues to aviation. You don't just gas and go. While I love seeing the fun things, the cruising, the cooking, the beauty shots from the drones, the water toys, the locations, it's so much fun for me seeing what it takes bts to make all of that happen. Great work, great videos!
lol marine fuel is double what you see at the pump plus time of the truck drivers.
plus delivery...
@@guitar911rockit’s regular ULSD dyed red for off road use or as us in the industry call it NRLM for non road locomotive marine.
@@guitar911rock Marine fuel is not double. Also, factor in that they are purchasing in bulk. Last I checked, marine diesel at non-bulk prices is running right around $4.25/gallon at most marinas in Florida. They most likely get a rather substantial discount for purchasing that many gallons. Delivery isn't going to much of a factor. Maybe $2000 - $4000
There should be no road tax.
Interesting to see this. I spent 20 years in the US Navy as an engineer and have done numerous refueling evolutions. We always took on amounts of around 150,000 US gallons at a time. We could hold over 644,000 total gallons.
Can't imagine trying to do that from tanker trucks. We either refueled from a barge or from a Oiler underway.
I am curious as to how the storage and service tanks are set up. We had two 10,000 gallon service tanks for each of the two engine rooms. The storage tanks were grouped in to six banks of overflowing tanks. Our storage tanks were seawater compensated, meaning that as we pumped fuel out one end of the bank we pressed seawater in the other end. This helped with buoyancy. We were actually heavier in the water when low on fuel. Moving fuel from storage to service was done by our Fuel Oil purifiers. These purifiers could take a 50/50 mix of fuel and water and separate it out into clean fuel and contaminated water. The fuel we burned was F76, people commonly call it diesel or DFM but that is not correct, the product on the market called DFM is not F-76 and while F-76 is close to diesel it is not the same as what you would find in your local gas station. We could also burn F-44 (JP-5) but that was not our usual diet.

I remember bringing on 3million gallons of JP-5 during UNREP on board the Carl Vinson. This brings back memories of sounding the tanks and equal filling so we didn’t keel over!
Hooyah, I was a Hull Tech so loved watching this engineering video! Would like more.
No Dom this vid? He's like a ghost! Lol. Love the more technical behind the scenes vids! That shot of the fuel going through the sight glass was cool too
One of your best videos! Thanks
I was surprised to see you bunkering in such a location; I would have thought there would be a designated fuelling berth?
Really amusing to see how antiquated the refuelling process is! We uplift this amount of gas twice a day into the aircraft; it’s fully automated and balances the tanks, no flags or special meetings or big values to manually adjust. Just a check of the flight plan and an instruction to the fueller who gets on with the job. We board passengers, load baggage. We typically load “a tonne per minute per hose”. Diesel is very similar to jet fuel
Cool story. Show us the difference in paperwork when someone goes down one of your inflatable slides
I m guessing here but I would think they don’t use high pressure systems like on jets in case of a leak, being on water that would be an ecological disaster that would be much harder and expensive to clean…
I'd expect a ship can do similar. If that ship is at a fuel dock (or somewhere else with enough fuel). On the other hand, watch the channel TimBatSea delivering fuel to larger ships... 2 million gallons per run...
My guess is around $250k (give or take $2-$3k) cost of fuel. Very thorough process very impressed with the diligence and management of this fuelling process. Thanks for your awesome videos 👍😊.

I'm guessing $132,500. I love these engineering videos. I really appreciate what it takes to keep a rig of this size safely operating. Thanks for sharing.
Use to work on steam vessels. We used Bunker C and had to run steam heaters in the bunker vessel and our tanks so not to turn the goop into sludge. As far as all the safety precautions great, we had zero but I don’t remember a single spill.

If you were caught using it in a vehicle, the authorities can use it's estimated fuel economy and odometer reading to charge you road tax on every gallon its ever driven to cover the known tax evasion.
I hope no one who works or cruises on the yacht ever preaches to the rest of us about climate change.

That's a lot of paperwork. My guess is that within 5 years and certainly 10 you'll be able to take a photo of it all and have it entered into software that has all the maintenance records. The tech already exists to make that happen and coming from an industry myself that went through a lot of automation I hope it does for you guys. Saves so much time that I can use on more productive things.
Wow i didn't realize they have that much range to go round trip across the Atlantic.
Quite a difference between fueling a vessel and dropping fuel into a storage tank like in a typical gas station. I run a Mobil station and the only checks and balances that occur are done by a TLS (Tank Level Sensor). If the system isn't operational or if the tank probes are out of calibration it's kind of "oh well". Use a wood tank stick and water paste to check for contamination! Yes, very different.
I deliver fuel for a living. They are making this sound way more complicated then what it is. Weighting the truck? Every truck gets a bill of lading when they load the truck . The api heads have a glass eyes on them when the little green ball drops that compartment is empty. The truck gravity drops at about 300 gallons a minute. They’re bigger trailers that carry way more fuel at once .
I figured there are larger trucks but maybe this is in Europe? Everything is so undersized and inefficient there.
@@MeEncantaKiley the bunkering was done in Florida. There are bigger fuel tanker trucks, but that depends on the weight limit in each State. All of this can be ignored if you have your own roads. However, in Florida, their weight limit for a semi is at 80k lbs in order to use the public roads. It seems that they're using marine diesel, which 1 US gal = ~7.1 lbs. They mentioned in the video that one of these fuel tanker trucks has a carrying capacity of 8k US gals. That's 56,800 lbs for the fuel alone, which is pretty impressive when considering the weight limitations.
Imagine going to get gas and make a whole video out of the ordeal. I get it this is an entertainment channel about a yacht life, but you are 100% correct, overdramatized for RUclips

That was very impressive. Amazing how many steps are involved. Thanks for sharing. 😊
Enjoyed this. Much like fueling a B-747 or any large jet. I am surprised that there is no filtration anywhere in this process. In aviation, any time fuel leaves one tank into another it is filtered. Flashlights into a tanker looking for contaminates, unless it is a dead cow, won’t cut it. Also, do you address the density of the fuel? That would affect volume into the tanks. Really look forward to more content into the operation of Loon. It’s definitely a complex machine. Thanks.
They will have a strainer on the bunker line to filter larger contaminates. Likewise, whenever they transfer fuel between tanks it will pass through a strainer.
Density is always shown on bunker spec sheets and will also be shown on the day on the bunker delivery note.
It’s quite normal to dip the trucks with a water finding paste but the only way to thoroughly check the quality is to send the samples away for analysis at a shore based facility. Some vessels won’t use the new fuel onboard if they can help it until the fuel is given the all clear. Hope that helps!
It’s diesel mate.
Some fuels are measured in btu's
I'm sure it's filtered along the line somewhere...
@@wilsixone Many years ago, in a land far, far away, I dealt with fuel daily. Temperature and specific gravity were always a factor in pricing.

My guestimate for the fuel: right around $125k if they are paying around $3.50/US gallon.
Love the videos❤️
I hate to think how much that would cost. Nice to see the process, not like the smaller boats where you just go to a marina filling station. Cant wait to get underway for the crossing, feels like more of the crew will be onboard going back so should be a great time. Take care.
That's 35,000 gallons and each big tanker truck can hold around 7600 gallons each. The "No Smoking" sign makes me laugh because you couldn't light a bucket of diesel with a hot cherry from the tip of a cigar!!
Atomized diesel can ignite off something like that, spraying diesel from something like a pressurized line can ignite off a relatively low heat source like a cigarette or open flame. Then once the flames start that can create a heat source for further ignition, spill more and you end up with a gnarly diesel fire.
True but if it is gas 💥
