- today we are doing a bookish experiment with tiktok! Can booktok recommend me the perfect book to read? how well does the algorithm know my reading tastes? First we investigate what the number say about the books i like and then i put all of my trust in the clock app to recommend me some good books. can't wait to read them all!

Hi! My name is Leonie and I am a 23 year old girl who loves talking about books! From YA to non-fiction to classics, I read it all (although fantasy will always be my fave). I live in the Netherlands and go to university, but make booktube videos in my spare time :)

You created Storygraph for yourself. This is exactly what Storygraph does, and then uses ai to recommend similar books. It's also constantly improving and independent so that's nice.
I would use it more if the cooler stuff on it was free, but I don't have any money to give to them. I totally get why there's a subscription for some of their features, I just don't have any money for them. RIP.
I came here to comment this lol.
But the graphs
for me their recommendations have been really great. back when it was in beta i got recommended not your sidekick and i really enjoyed the series. most of the recommendations i’ve read from them usually get about 4 stars
THIS
maybe it's not as fun as tiktok, but the Storygraph also has a recommendations section that I believe is more accurate than the goodreads one and you can even pick your preferences!
loved the video, can't wait to hear your thoughts on some of these books 😊
I was going to recommend this too!! They have a great algorithm. You can even go as far as including tropes in your preferences like "enemies to lovers" or whatever. Love Storygraph.
@@capripoa yes!! You can even import your goodreads data easily ☺️
@@capripoa 1-5 stars, but you can also do 3.5, 4.75 etc
@@capripoa to rate a book, when you finish it you click the button that says "add review" and there's a place to put in your rating. if you want to check the rating of a book, once you open its page, you'll find it at the very bottom left
@@capripoa you're welcome 😊
I have just recently found Leonie... and not gonna lie.. I just binged the last entire year of her uploads lololol
yes we all go through that phase
@@chrysoula5226 exactly🤭🤭
This is me now 😂
I just binged the whole channel (and currently am still doing it lol)
My 2022 goal will be read 1 book a month it’s not much but i think this will help me get out of my reading slump also your video of all the series u have to read made me finally put all the books I want to read into a spread sheet jdut to have it all organized haha
Any reading is good reading! One book a month is great!!
@@stephaniemarie4946 yea ur right! I have friends that don’t know the last time they picked up a book haha
I did this last year and ended up reading like 30 books because it got me out of my slump. Hope it works well for you
@@cappybara wow that’s crazy!! I hope it works too
@@heysheys2199 These sorts of goals have worked for me... It's always nice to have a goal that you can complete, that way you don't get discouraged by not completing it :)
that excel spreadsheet? we love a data analyst
for real i opened this data in Rstudio first but didn't know how to code a simple pie chart adfgh so back to excel it was
@@TheBookLeo the simplest things require so much code honestly excel is all we need
You said you didn't recognize Know My Name by Chanel Miller, and I could not recommend it highly enough!! It was the best book out of the 100 I read last year, and it's a must-read (but definitely check content warnings first and read with care). Super powerful.
Agreed! Definitely in my top three of 2021.
Came here specifically to mention this!!! 100%
I love it, but I wouldn't say it's a 'must read'. It can be very triggering, so people should definitely proceed with caution for themselves! Check trigger warnings.
@@RoxiriOrSokai Yes, definitely!!
Ya I feel like every booktuber I watch had it in their fave books of the year list, I know it’s a very America-centered story but can’t believe she hasn’t heard of it
The love triangle one gave me so much joy. Actually the Bloomsbury group are a well of complicated relationships and love triangles and love squares. My fave story is that Virginia’s sister Vanessa had a lover who lived with her and her husband called Duncan Grant. Duncan Grant was mostly gay tho and he also had another lover called Bunny/David Garnett. Duncan and Vanessa had a kid together called Angelica Bell but Angelica grew up thinking her dad was Clive Bell, Vanessa’s husband. Later, she married Bunny who wrote in a letter the day she was born that he was going to marry her some day WHICH… oh god. ("Its beauty is the remarkable thing … I think of marrying it; when she is 20 I shall be 46 - will it be scandalous?" Yes, David, it will be!) She also didn’t know he was her bio dad’s lover. 😬
Maybe that's where Stephanie Meyer got her Jacob imprinting on a baby idea from, so gross (but also thanks for the info, it's really interesting!)
Woah I seriously can’t imagine thinking a baby is hot and wanting to marry it wtf
new adult neeeds to exist, I wish more publishers used it so I can find books targeted towards “20 something year olds experiencing 20 something your old things”. YA is too young and doesn’t have what I’m looking for in literature and “adult” is usually a generation (or two) older than me and I just need a distinctive difference between “new adult/college age” (18-25/30) and “adult” (30+)
THIS!! I also feel like the 'young adult' title should be for the 20 something demographic and that what we currently call 'young adult' should get a new name like 'youth' or something
new adult does exist.....
great video as always ✨ you also can use the storygraph to get more personalized recommendations, it's like goodreads but with a better algorithm!
The Monk by Matthew Lewis I definitely recommend. I read it as part of a gothic literature course at university. It was written by the son of a prime minister in England in the late 1700’s. He wrote it when he was a teenager. Its so good. The only way I can think to describe it is it is like reading a 1700’s telenovella. It’s ridiculous and surprisingly very easy to read.
I also ready it during my undergrad and it was so good. I got my husband to read it and he’s a fan now as well.
I really look forward to every of your videos! If it‘s a reading vlog, a video essay, talking about books, Stardew Valley streams... I love every one of them, you are a very comforting and fun character 🥰 Hope you have a great week, greetings from Germany! 😊
You might like Gideon the ninth! It's new adult, fantasy (a bit of sci fi), character driven and sapphic ♡
Necromancy fantasy 👀
@@samuelleask1132 👀
Became my favourite book after I read it + Harrow the Ninth. SO good!!
I've been watching Leonie for months now,and she is officially one of my comfort channels
I'm always a sucker for a spreadsheet so applause for that. It's an interesting way to find books.
this was very fun!!! i love how you talk, it's very entertaining and relaxing!!
Such a fun video!!! You always have the most creative ideas for content and I love that!
When you were saying “maybe I don’t like fantasy as much as I think I do”, it would be very interesting to see a video where you talk about your favorite books/ genres as a percentage of how many books in that genre you’ve already read! Just interesting to see that you tend to have liked a lot more general fiction than you thought you did and perhaps that’s because you like a higher percentage of the books from that genre than other ones even though you might tend to pick up other genres more!
I also watched *that* eyeliner tutorial recently, showing how to do the inner corner flick. It looks really good o you!
This is such a fun way to play with the algorithm! Thanks for another fun video! I have also taken some notes on books I might like to read that aren't on my fyp.
the accuracy of the night circus just being categorized as "vibes" haha
it deserves a category of its own
Aah, Leonie. I love your videos! So happy to see that you've uploaded 💞✨
I want to try what you did with the breakdown on your spread sheet. It's so fascinating to me!
you're videos are so asthetic♡
Hi Leonie, your channel has revived my love of reading after a several-year slump, where I was too afraid to pick up anything other than non-fiction for fear of commitment. I also appreciate how you normalize people who love books, but that are slow readers!! Lots of love from Canada :)
The Sword of Kaigen is really good once you get through the first 100 pages. I wanted to DNF the book at page 70 because there was SOOO much infodumping and in-world terminology that I thought 'this just isn't good'. If you are into the adult fantasy booktube niche you hear a lot of people absolutely rave about the Sword of Kaigen and that's the only reason I kept going. Everything after those first 100 pages is among the best fantasy I've ever written.
I didn't like it especially when the rapist gets redeemed
Adding so many of these books to my TBR! I’ve read 13 books so far! ☺️
Omg, I am sooo excited to see your review of the Sword of Kaigen! 😍
I've been seeing only good things about this book! Not many people talk about it, but when they do they say it's amazing 😍
I bought the book, but in English (we don't have a translation yet) so I'm a bit scared to start 😅
I read it last year and loved it! If you like character driven stories and great action scenes you may enjoy it too!
yay yay yay so excited for you to check out the sword of kaigen. One of my favs from last year
Not me being behind on my chores, opening youtube to procrastinate and then being early to Leonie’s youtube video 🤡 truly my priorities are set and the dedication is real 😌✋🏽 love ur videos so this is a better use of my time anyways hehe, laundry can wait x (also I love how you haven't heard of most of these books until you got on booktok,,, like I've heard of nearly all of them from booktube so maybe you're just watching the wrong booktubers AHAHA)
I love how scientifically you approach picking your next book! BTW, Netflix recommended to me today their new series "Archive 81" which so far seems very dark academia. I'm 2.5 episodes in and enjoying it! Great video as always!
ohhh thanks, i'm gonna check that out!
Ooo the Sword of Kaigen is soooo good! it will rip your heart out but then piece it back together in a very satisfying way. Plus it has a strong female main character ❤️👍🏻📖
that sounds so amazing aaa
My favorite book of 2021!! ❤️
I downloaded it recently, I'm excited to start it!!
Not only did this give me amazing book recommendations, but it also gave me book-tokers to follow so thank you 😄
Thank you for this video! I loved loved loved Arcane so much so I’m definitely going to read Gearbreakers and I’m very intrigued by I’m Thinking of Ending Things :D
this isn’t related to the video, but your voice is so calming to me 💖
I love how u make scrolling on tiktok for hours productive lmao
I also look at a lot of genshin edits
Some of my fav local booktubers who love Poppy War will also find Sword of Kaigen as their next love. I really think you should pickup the book.
I'm currently reading The Poppy War, and it is final exam season but I don't care because the book is sooo good
Such a cool video! I only get recommendations on tiktok for the most popular books on booktook and I'm just not into most of them.
Since you did not get any Sci-fi recommendations: have you read the Murderbot Diaries or Project Hail May? PHM was my absolute favorite book of last year!
I'm thinking of ending things was so strange yet wonderful. Super atmospheric, sort of subtle horror that always gets me. You should give it a try!
these violent delights is definitively one of my top three reads of last year. ^_^
You will love Sword of Kaigen!
For scifi, have you tried Becky Chambers yet? Soooo good and comfy!
Read The Infinity Courts! Great representation, morally grey characters, mix of sci fi and fantasy and dystopian, and major plot twists that keep you thinking for hours!
i really enjoyed this video! :)
I recommend these violent delights by chloe gong. It's a romeo and juilet retelling set in 1920s shanghai with two rival gangs and morally grey characters
when she said the name I freaked out for one second thinking it was Chloe.
If you want to read a fantasy book that is full of morally gray characters and is set in China, I recommend The Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation. It’s a web novel but the first book of the English translation is out now! It’s one of my favorite stories ever.
Some niche recommendations from the top of my head: Convivium by Andrew E. Maugham (an unconventional look at Heaven and Hell, could be classified as adventurous adult fantasy I guess) and Lanark by Alasdair Gray (a pretty weird allegorical piece modern of Scottish literature)
I am currently reading Drive Your Plow Over the Bones of the Dead - I like a book with a long title - very good so far .
you may like - In the House Upon the Dirt Between the Lake and the Woods, by Matt Bell . Long titles rule!
these violent delights is amazing. also the author is super sweet and great
so pretty!!
i think a book you may like is alone with you in the ether. it's by the same author that wrote the atlas six (which i havent personally read) but it is a romance about 2 people who are struggling and find each other. i would consider it general fiction. it has a VERY loose (but very beautiful imo) writing style (sometimes dialogues aren't even in quotations) but has some beautiful conversations between the 2 main characters and it's a book i personally highly recommend! a small trigger warming: it deals with topics of mental illness and addiction which can be triggering for some
The way I just had the same expression as you she started talking about crime and punishment in the tiktok😭😭I love the inside jokes on this channel
Here to second the rec for Drive your plow over the bones of the dead by Olga Tokarkzuc! So so good!
I am so curious how these pie charts have changed year over year, now that you read all of these recommendations!
oh my god please try The Sword of Kaigen!!! it's genuinely so so good!
whenever someone mentions unhinged female characters, I immediately think of "The Vegetarian" by Han Kang. I just constantly sat there thinking "Dafuq did I just read". Loved it
The sword of Kaigen is AMAZING!! And is a standalone fantasy 🥳
Wow!! Now I have new books I can add to my forever growing reading list
you can check out she who became the sun and six crimson cranes. one is adult historical fantasy and the latter is ya.
Oh wow It brings me so much joy that Leonie likes Arcane too!!!
I think you'll like Storygraph🙃 their recs are nice and they classify stuff quite similarly to what you have done here...
From one Leonie to the other, I highly recommend you read Know my Name by Chanel Miller. It‘s the best memoir I have ever read. If you‘re in the right headspace to read about the author‘s experience with sa, then please give it a go. It is so impactful and important, for everyone imo
A grocery list of shame and panic got to me ngl. 🤣🤣
I'm currently very obsessed with gideon the ninth, so if you haven't read it yet I highly recommend!
Love you Shatha mwah
This was a far stretch from "exchanging my phone time for reading time" 😂 and now I'm gonna watch the social dilemma
"The secret History meets Call me by your name" Excuse me but how did I never heard of these violent delights before !!!
Tiktok really is the big brother in our lives but I eat it up like candy! Very good idea! Your eyes look stunning with that makeup look btw
I had no idea you loved the show Hannibal and now I like you 100x more lol
Great video! 🙂
You'd love Bunny!!
literally this concept omg
Bunny is so amazing! It’s weird af but so rewarding.
Edit: also omg Virginia/Vita/Violet was my entire early 20s, like I was super into the Bloomsbury group and all their satellites. I feel a nostalgic need to revisit it (and maybe continue my project of acquiring a set of first editions of Virginia Woolf’s letters)
Hey! Can u tell me the names of the books based on Violet-Vita-Virginia? Never heard of "what they were inspired on" like that tik tok explanation but sounds very interesting 😳🤯
These Violent Delights is excellent. It was my favorite book of 2021!
I just finished the Sword of Kaigen and it is phenomenal and so much better than I was anticipating
The way she push her hair behind her ear then moves it.... I think i am in love
Love you and your channel :)
Hello! The fun of reading a book will be helpful 😊 Thank you for your continued support 🤲
I think you’ll love Rebecca! It’s got the vibes
is it a biology student thing to make an excel spreadsheet the second you need to organize something in your life bc I recently made one of my physical tbr that looks almost exactly like yours😭
But Leonie, what about the love triangle books? Maybe you can do a dedicated vlog to share your theories.
this is so funny, cause I don't read fantasy at all but I always get fantasy recs on booktok hahaha
also big recommendation for storygraph. it’s just awesome and so much better than goodreads! only if my friends were there 😭
I think you should read Bunny by Mona Awad!!! It’s a very weird book and maybe it’s a hit or miss but it’s worth the try because just reading it,even if you end up not liking it, is a whole experience lol
Velvet was the night by Silvia Moreno García has gray characters, I think you might like it
I love that book ✨
How do you guys get books on your fyp? I added booktok to my favorite hashtags, I follow a few booktokers but still I rarely get book content on my fyp...
maybe try storygraph they are more personalized
*Just randomly going on youtube and seeing you uploaded* YAY SHE UPLOADED *immideantly clicking The video*
BUNNY IS SO GOOD
yes PLS do a reading what storygraph recommends me bc sometimes storygraph recs me the weirdest sounding book based on my "moods" and "genre" for eg. i had a lot of alien smut recommended to me bc i wanted, "science fiction" "adventurous" "funny" "lgbtq+" "romance" 😂😂
Looks at the Character or Plot Driven category.
Me: Morgenstern neither fall to these category lol.
Then saw "vibe" in the row of night circus.
Also me: o-ok, where's the lie.
I actually haven't read night circus but I already experienced reading Morgenstern's Starless Sea which I think it's Whimsical driven as Night Circus. Gosh it's been 2 years since i read T.S.S. and the setting is still fresh and vivid to my mind, and I hate it haha lol coz I despise that book.
That love triangle! Wow! I must read these haha.
"Vibe-driven" sounds kind of similar to books that are made good by their world-building rather than characters or plot, but instead focusing on tone (which seems especially common for horror, in my experience).
I can relate to not often reading horror, but the horror I do read being very good. I think that's because I'm just pickier with horror than with fantasy. I'll sooner read a fantasy book that might not be good just because it has an interesting premise and I hope it delivers on that. I'm also more immersed in fantasy and know more people who read a lot of fantasy, so I will generally get more fantasy recommendations that way than horror, so what horror I *do* hear about has gotten traction for a reason.
Dostoevsky did consider himself to be writing in a style of “fantastic realism,” so, hey, you know, Crime and Punishment is kinda fantasy too. But, to be serious, I know Dostoevsky can have some very long and tedious conversations in his books, but some really emotional and dramatic stuff goes down towards the end of the book.
Also, I was wondering, and apologies for asking, but would you be interested in doing a video comparing Crime and Punishment (or any book(s)) in Dutch with an English translation? I was just wondering how similar or different the book feels in each translation, or how the different translations are able to make the same effect.
Oh, I *loved* The Idiot by Elif Batuman and think you would also really vibe with it 🥰
You stil need to check out the Witches/and or the "Tiffany Aching" cycles of Terry Pratchetts disc world.
I dont read fast either. though maybe one day i will lol but i have 3 kids, 2 cats, a dog and full time job. but i love reading. lol your videos are my favorite 😍
Not a book recommendation (I'm sure you get plenty of them!) but a movie recommendation instead; "Vita And Virginia" (2018) co-stars Gemma Arterton and Elizabeth Debicki as Vita Sackville-West and Virginia Woolf and recounts their sometimes torrid, sometimes tender friendship/love affair over the years. Well worth a look when the Tik-Tokery starts to lose it's appeal!
StoryGraph is actually good for recs
Check out Zodiac Academy. It is Fantasy and romance. I’m surprised you weren’t recommended it!
If you're looking for a fantasy series with great characters and an active fanbase I really recommend Gideon The Ninth (Locked Tomb Series). It's about necromancers, it's funny and the fans are unhinged. We just got the cover reveal for the 3rd book and the memes are on fire!
This was a genius idea
