    i think some readers want to be intelligent and intelectual so much they just lie about their favorite books so people will think they read the most complex book ever. it's ok to like a book because it's fun, you don't need to convince people you are intelectual because you read a teen fantasy book. just say, ''this book is fun and that's why a loved it''.

      100%!! I recently read The Diviners as one of my Halloween reads. I'm a 31 year old attorney boss bitch, but I have no trouble saying I thoroughly enjoyed that YA novel and I plan on reading the rest of the series. Like what you like and own it! Reading is about having time with yourself and getting lost in a story - other opinions don't matter.

    I was so disappointed in the lack of the actual library? You're in the frigging Library of Alexandria and don't go absolutely nuts over it? Reina talks about it maybe twice. I was expecting more books and less horny. No, I am not complaining about the horny.

      Fully agree. Deviating a bit from books, this is something common in anime. Stuff like Fire Force, or Jojo, both sometimes try to explain their abilities logically, but end up being only less cogerent because of science misunderstandings. Magic systems need rules and consistency before they need explanations. Sure, there are times where the author creates a complex system that is also well explained (Jujutsu Kaisen comes to my mind) but sometimes less intricate systems can be easier to follow

      Soft magic systems are my favourite. The best example i can think of right now for a soft magic system is Coraline. It doesn't explain why events occur. Just what you need to understand what is happening. (This goes both for the movie and the book) .

    No but I thought I was the only person who was SEVERELY disappointed in this book!! I agree with basically all of your points; worldbuilding and magic system are too big and poorly explained, I couldn’t picture the setting at all and there were too many pretentious discussions about hypothetical concepts when it could have had a stronger plot. It’s now being traditionally published by Tor tho, so I’m curious to see whether the book will get a round of edits before the new release!

    I read this book in June and yes, I thought it was overhyped as well! It had some likable things, but what irritated me most were actually the characters. I mean, they got better in the end, but I remember thinking they had NO reason to be rude/mean to each other (this actually put them in a huge disadvantage considering the "one has to die" rule which they discovered later on), except of it being a dark academia where people are supposed to be morally grey. I'm okay with characters being rude, mean, having a screwed-up moral compass or just plain bad to each other, but give me a reason WHY they behave like that. They were like that from the beginning on without ANY logical reason imo. It got better a bit later but the damage was done already lol.

    I feel like booktok is something that has a lottt of different sides. Yes, it is a great way of getting people started on reading again but the majority of those “tiktok books” are way too overhyped. Perhaps it is just because the books I have read because of tiktok just weren’t for me but *imo* there are a lot of hidden gems in the library or bookstores you can find JUST by it (the book) finding *you* , It’s almost the best way of finding a good, satisfying book. But again, it is lovely to see that a lot of people began reading again because of tiktok! (Can’t say it didn’t hype me up to get dust off my books.) And no, not all booktok books are bad, on the contrary, I think there are sick stories that got more attention over social media. All with all, very mixed opinions on booktok.

And i honestly don’t trust many of their opinions for recommendations because many (not all) have smut as a primary reason they like the book. No thank you. I just want some books that explore life and have vibrant worlds and characters and make you laugh and cry.

      Honestly true that. I started reading again because of booktok and found some AMAZING books that are my absolute faves rn!!! However... Them being overhyped is a big problem to me. I had HUGE expectations for The song of Achilles, and I DID like the book a LOT, however my expectations were wayyyy higher than what it offered to me, that in the end I was disappointed. A great thing about it though is that I saw the description of the second book the author wrote, Circe, as books usually do at the end of their covers, and I fell in love with it sm I knew immediately that I was going to love it. And I DID!!! it's now my ulti favorite book ever!!! I read it in two days, like a day or two after I finished the song of Achilles!!

    what made me DNF after over 200 pages was that it felt like the author REALLY wanted to use an entire dictionary in this book. like ‘defenestrate’ and ‘ostensibly’ we’re used in the same sentence and I had to put it down soon after that. I hate non accessible language and it felt to me like the author wanted to be pretentious for no reason

    • @annikania2682
      @annikania2682 Год назад +81

      I might be late, but: I totally agree! And it actually made me not finish the book, too. English is not my first language, but i usually have no problems with reading comprehension, neither in the papers I read for uni, nor in reading for fun (writing might be another story, but reading/listening is generally no problem). But this ... was terrible. My GOD. I did actively need to google for some translations, and this did totally break the experience. Also there are sentences that do not make sense (even after I read them ten times and felt stupid for "not getting" them), which made me want to throw this book against the wall.
      AND I HAVE THE OFFICIALLY PUBLISHED ONE ... my god, I was excited for this, I feel betrayed.
      If my local library picks up the German translation I would potentially try again, but to be honest, I am interested in world building, and REALLY not into characters wanting to duck each other.

    • @Adelynoir
      @Adelynoir Год назад +74

      @@bushrawaqar8740 The issue is that it leads to bad sentences. This is why 'purple prose' has such a bad wrap even though it can be done properly. Often times, an author will say the same thing over and over in different ways. For example: The trees were verdant, lush with green, and flourishing. To an untrained reader this sounds almost poetic, but the truth is all three of these statements say the same thing and do not bring any new imagery to the table. It should be better to use simple vocabulary that further builds on the image: the trees were verdant, green spanning across reaching branches to block out even the smallest traces of sky.

    • @raisinbranturtle5364
      @raisinbranturtle5364 Год назад +25

      I like the word "defenestrate" but more out of comedic appreciation for how people in the olden days were thrown out of towers often enough that it warranted having its own word. I think however, if you want to immerse a reader in what is happening in a visceral way, describing movements more literally, with simpler words, is actually better. Ornamentation can have a way of obscuring the gravity of serious things happening within a narrative.
      But that's just my opinion and I might try to get through the book anyways.

    The thing that annoyed me sooo much it started to hurt is how much the other POVs contained slander against Libby. Yes, she has literally zero self esteem at first and is insecure, but come on: having all other POVs pretty much start with how much they despise her and think she's stupid was unnecessary at best and hurtful at worst. Yeah, I admit, there's a lot of self insertion here but it confirmed my fear that everyone around me will hate me for this personalty trait and disregard all other of my qualities. Couldn't there be one, just one character who at least thought neutral about her from the get-go? And no, I will forever rant about this

    I felt like this book had a decent set up with introduction to the characters and description of the society followed by a lackluster execution of the plot. I kind of expected more maneuvering and backstabbing between the six based on synopsis. And your right that this barely had a setting. I had to keep reminding myself that it was supposedly set in an English manor house because that was not at all obvious and I kept forgetting.

    From your explanations of the magic system, I imagine the author is someone who liked the idea of a science-based magic system, but doesn't actually have a strong enough science background to write one. Which no problem with not being in a STEM field, but also...maybe don't try to base your magic system on something you don't understand?

    • @sin3358

      That's not the problem. She could've always done a lot of research about it. Not every author knows everything that they're writing about but they end up doing lots of research about them in order to know better. Google is free, RUclips is free. She could've had an idea and maybe googled if that thing does have a scientific paper done somewhere and then thought about a way to put it in her story. But this is her first book I believe? So I'll be less harsh to be honest. Not many people are good the first time, and she has the potential to get better. She came up with a great idea, with time I'm sure she'll get better. Especially now that she has a publishing house!

    Currently reading this and I do agree with a lot of the points you make and also that is really addictive. I do feel like this could have been edited better as we're reading the characters' thoughts, but I found it difficult to follow when they were reminiscing on things that happened in the past. If it were written in italic or something or with some white space to separate it from the present, that would have been an improvement for me.

    I'm revisiting your video after reading the book and you are so right on so many points, I completely agree with you! And, probably because my expectations were low, I really had a great time reading it, even if the magic system is flimsy at best and the science doesn't sound accurate.

    Glad I saw this before picking it up. I was concerned , because the premise is great but I’ve been burned by self published books before. The comments here say it’s being picked up by Tor, so I’ll wait for the revised edition. Thanks for going in open minded and making quality content, like always . ❤️

    Oh boy… I just bought this book like 10 days ago.
    I’m a chemical engineer. I’m kinda picky about my science-influenced books, and by that I mean science-influenced magic systems in fantasy 😂 I hate it if they’re not accurate and I hate it when they’re pretentious trying to be “smart” when in reality it makes no sense.
    Now I’m nervous 😬

    Loved your perspective on this book! So far, every single book recommendation i've gotten from Tiktok has just been ... disappointing to say the least (touch of darkness, looking at you) which is why i'm staying very far away from reading any books off booktok. Your video was a great way to know whether the book would actually be good without having to live through hours of disappointment while reading it myself lol

    I literally screamed when I saw this video.😂 I finished this book last weekend and I loved it!❤ Although I do agree with your criticism, nothing really bothered me that much. Perhaps my expectations were not as high. I did wish there was more happening though, I wanted to read more about their lectures, more danger scenes etc. But this book had REALLY good characters, I loved them all and I also ship them all together.🤭 Overall I thought it was a really promising first book and I cannot wait till the second one comes out. I really want to know what happens to these characters.

    I need to wait till March 2022 when the edited version is released. As an editor, I can't read a book that in need of an edit, no matter how pretty the art is and how the characters are so shippable. (I saw some asked for labels on the character sketches because they weren't labeled. WTF?)

    I just finished that books yesterday and I loved it! I have some points from a perspective of a librarian on it, and did have some hang-ups, but I ended up giving it a 4 star because I did thoroughly enjoy it and the philosphical debates it had. But I'm also not a very "visual" reader, so some things that bother others kind of.... makes it better for me lmao

    I’ve noticed a lot of the Tik Tok books recommended are just okay. They are entertaining which is great. I started reading again because of Book Tok but I’ve since moved on to different recommendations from friends and people on Book Tube with much better luck and more rewarding and engaging stories. If that makes sense.

    lol i read this book after you mentioned it in passing in one of your older videos. all you said was 'its dark academia" and i was like yes lets go! so i'm really glad i didnt have any expectations or idea of what it was about going in -- i ended up really enjoying it.
    and like tiktok does recommend good books, but the way its talked about and the parts that they hype up really just sets the book up to disappoint so i totally understand how this fell flat with you. It's a shame tho.

    I guess when you've read more and more than one genre you'd see the faults and inconsistencies of a book. Like if you're an avid sci-fi or fantasy reader or just someone who has a good enough knowledge of how scienc-y things are explained you'd be disappointed by others that define physics like how you said it was described here.. well i am wary of booktok recommendations, have to listen to Leonie and other booktubers I love before I invest in a physical copy

      Lol im back after reading it. Its fun. I did really enjoy it. But it's not the intellectual book people are making it out to be. It doesn't delve into anything "sciencey" ( for lack of better term). I would recommend it FOR FUN. Rather than a big academia style book.

    That spider plant looks healthy!
    I loved that "tiktok but better video", so many gems! I wonder if there is a "but better" science-magic system!
    Also, thanks for saving me a disappointment with the magic system. It sounds like the author wanted a science system very badly but knew almost nothing about science. It reminds me of Feyra from ACOTAR being passionate about painting but SJM clearly not knowing much about making of art. On the flip side Addie Larue is clearly so absorbed with art that it is clear how much VE Schwab enjoys museums and humanism and it was so clear how much it meant to Addie abd Schwab to tell their stories. I wonder is it laziness from some authors or is it just being unfamiliar with the subject...

    Very glad I watched this before I read the book. I still wanted to read it but I was more prepared for the reality of it rather than the hype. I appreciate that. As someone with a physics background, this is super vague. An attempt was made but really, they create the thing and it should be amazing but it's only mentioned in passing. I feel like the book could have been written entirely without magic and still been the same kind of character study. Oh, and I totally agree that you could ship any character with any other character. 😂 That is quite the feat!

    I thoroughly enjoyed the book! I came at it from the perspective of “what is the main theme and how well does the book tackle that theme?” I think it did a great job of it. In my opinion, it’s main themes are “the price of knowledge” and “how does power corrupt”. Both of those themes are approached in an interesting and unique way. Is it perfect? No. But is it worth picking up to see if you enjoy the writing style and the plot? I think so!
