My main trick to using my phone less is trying to use it purposefully: I read articles, talk to my friends, or answer texts from my students, and only check Twitter on my laptop (I also went off a bunch of social media, but that's another topic). It kinda sucks because you have to find tasks to do when you'd usually use your phone and sometimes it's just staring at the ceiling bored out of your mind. However, some other times you get to hang out or chat with your friends or chill with your pets.
It's a lot of back & forth, and I've certainly "relapsed" into like 5 hours of screen time a day more than once (and twice, and thrice...), but every time I cut my screen time I feel much less "no thoughts head empty" and more "brain unclouded, feeling inspired", so it pays off.
Anyways, I hope this journey pays off for you & that you find some tricks that work for you :D

The thing about my screen time is that I'm unable to do anything without background noises. So my YT time is insane, but a lot of it is when i'm doing chores, driving, taking a shower, etc. So I don't really know how much of my screen time is me sitting around and wasting time.
If anyone is in a similar situation, what I decided to do this week as a challenge is: instead of watching YT videos while doing chores I'll listen to music, podcasts or audiobooks. So I'll have a more accurate screen time.
I could also adress why i'm unable to spend 5 minutes washing the dishes in silence, but let's ignore that, lol
p.s. here's the tradicional "english is not my first language, sorry for any mistakes"

I’m exactly the same! I normally clean a lot on a Saturday and I put my wireless headphones on and clean while ‘watching’ but mainly listening to RUclips. I think most videos I watch are about the verbal communication rather than the visual aspects so it’s not too bad. What you observed regarding just taking more time to complete tasks when you weren’t using your laptop probably can be related to Parkinson‘s law. He basically says that you will complete a task in a time frame you set for it, so if you usually think about watching RUclips after washing the dishes you automatically allotted less time to that task, thereby finishing it quicker than when you know you won‘t be going on your laptop/phone today anyway through which you appoint a longer timeframe to that task subconsciously and thereby the task stretches out to take up that longer timeframe :D

I love this experiment and it's definitely something I'd consider doing as I know my own screen time has been a bit high lately. Though I find it fascinating that you had a hard time following the audiobook vs. tiktok or RUclips while getting ready for bed - I'm the complete opposite, I can be absorbed in the audiobook because I don't need my eyes, whereas with TikTok or RUclips I feel I will stop getting ready to watch the video because my eyes naturally draw to the screen. It's so interesting how everyone's experiences are a little different!

  • @roman-cu1cw
    @roman-cu1cw 3 года назад +2

Lots of your comments resonate with me. Like, I totally get that reading is not as leisurely as you'd like it to be! I find it really hard to read in the late evening or before bed like many articles suggest because my brain is just too tired at that point. I had the same dilemma like you mentioned- I refused to spend my before-bed time on my phone, but then I didn't want to read either, so I ended up doing.. nothing. I actually began knitting earlier this year for this exact reason. I needed a hobby that I could turn to when I was too tired to enjoy my other hobby (=reading).
And I'm not sure if you've finished How To Do Nothing by Jenny Odell by this point, but I really recommend reading it rather than listening. Unlike the deceptively laid-back title and chill cover, that book is filled with so much information! It's just the kind of book that one is supposed to really take time, sit and read. I was always furiously highlighting sentences and paragraphs when I was reading it.
Oh and yeah, deleting Twitter app on the phone and then using Twitter with mobile web browser is also an on-and-off thing that I do. But deleting the app does help me cut the mindless timeline scrolling and instead go onto Twitter only when I have this really strong desire to rant, so I still think it's worth it :D

I do like 10h average on my phone, 3h are RUclips (I usually don't do it on my laptop), 3h are WhatsApp because I'm on finals and my class group is on fire and I also I talk to my friends about finals and everything. But also I use my phone to calm anxiety about finals and to procrastinate, so when I'm not stressed out I can lower it down to 5/6h. I have discovered that less than 3h is nearly impossible to me, but I'm fine with 3h. I usually had the same idea than you and come to the same conclusion, is not about limit phone, is about making the choice to read instead of Twitter in your free time. But to me the only moment I'm on my phone guilt free because I'm not procrastinating is at bedtime (you could say I'm procrastinating sleep, which is true but is another whole story), when I'm exhausted to read and end going the easy way with my phone. When I'm not under extreme stress, I read more and spend less on my phone. On finals is the other way around...

This is a pretty cool video! I'm gonna try and do this some time. I feel like all I do in a day is work, eat, play games and use my phone for various things (online shopping, chatting with my bf, browsing Facebook, watching stuff on YT). I miss reading books honestly, I still haven't read the Mistborn trilogy and am planning to read it very soon (as well as Lord of The Rings!). Thank you for this video and I hope you're doing well~

I appreciated this video and exercise so much. I have done this more informally myself and find the same. Reading is not exactly leisure. Interestingly tho, I believe it FEELS this way because we have become used to mindlessly listening to tiktok or RUclips’s and so our minds are not as “in-shape” to concentrate. Concentration is a muscle that must be exercised along with our bodies. That being said great video thanks!!

Today I have had time to read about 50 pages, finish an assignment, have a cup of cocoa and listened to an audio book for an hour, went grocery shopping and had a trip to the mall. I put a timer on youtube and instagram and have not been on my phone. Soon off to clean, read, make spagetti, watch some tv later on. Hopefully I can keep my screen time down. Had 5-7 hours on my phone each day, so I really need to work on getting less screen time.

I normally watch something while doing other things so I don't consider some things as time wasting. Like I'll watch RUclips when I'm getting ready in the morning and before bed (especially in Korean because I'm learning and it helps me remember), or while I'm eating. So I only look at social media when I think about screen time; notes/Bookly/Spotify/Google are productive things for me. I'm also trying to not be so hard on myself. If I had a really bad day (like to the point of crying), I'll let myself have a little more screentime. Wish I could apply that to all aspects of life haha, being able to evaluate when I can make adjustments

I read in between doing things. So let's say right now I am watching booktube. Whenever an ad happens I pause the video and read a chapter of my current (Near the Bone by Christina Henry). And when the video finishes I read another chapter. Reading is my rest, so when I am doing uni work, I break up tasks by reading a chapter in between. And that is how I end up reading plenty throughout the day. So technology usually isn't a hindrance, unless I like am scrolling on Pinterest or Instagram.

I think that if the amount of time you spend on certain apps still bugs you I would recommend putting a time limit on those apps. I also had issues with the amount of time I was spending on certain apps on my phone and putting a time lock on them really helped. You don’t have to put an aggressively short amount of time on them either. It just helps me be more conscious of the time I spend when my phone alerts me that it’s five minutes until I’ve been on an app for an hour or something like that. So I think it helps a lot in cutting back a little more time naturally.

Hello Leonie! I have discovered your channel recently and I love it! This video is very instructive as it puts the stress on the time we spend on our phone instead of doing some useful activities like reading or learning something interesting. By the way, I'm also easily distracted by my own thoughts! See you soon!

I dont know if you’ve read this book already, but from what you talk about, I think Digital Minimalism by Cal Newport may be more appropriate for you (I haven’t read How to Do Nothing yet, however). He does talk about a full 30-day detox (which, I don’t think would work for everyone, but I’ve done 30-day breaks from certain social media and it’s worked for me) and then reintroducing technology and social media with an intention. He emphasizes doing things more slowly and the idea of how do you fill up the time that you now have and what goals you have for your free time (I read it a few years ago, but this is what I remember and still recommend it to people.)

I changed my phone few months ago and find out that my samsung has the inbuilt screen-time measurement function. I thought it was cool to know my results... Finally I was unpleasantly surprised by the size of a catastrophe. During the zoom-lectures the timer hit the mark 12 hours, literally half a day, and my social networks were a huge Black Hole for my free-time. This changed my outlook on my life and my priorities.
