Some advice: Nothing you do can solve your phone addiction unless you identify the reason you use these apps in the first place. It's probably a good reason, so that reason will inevitably drive you to go back on the changes you've made. For example: I used to autopilot to RUclips whenever I wasn't hitting a certain stimulus threshold. When I got rid of RUclips, I became more miserable and reinstalled it. That's because without yt, I was still antsy and bored, the only difference being that now I have nothing to fix my boredom. Then, when I picked up photography, my life kind of slowed down and I became invested in low stimulus activities like staring at trees. This eliminated my main cause for going on yt and thus made me use it less. So make sure that when you're making these sorts of changes, it addresses the reason why you do what you do in the first place. Don't beat around the bush, first look for the bush and then give it one big whack in its weak spot. That's how you make permanent progress instead of temporary progress 👍🏾
Yeah, this is how to solve it for most people - you have to solve other problems or get ready to solve them immediately after you get rid of your phone.
yeah it’s honestly sad seeing everyone look down at a little screen instead of talking. as someone with social anxiety, i rely on others to start up a convo so if nobody is trying then it’s hard to have real connections.

Now the app opens on shorts everytime and I get caught in the scrolling with the mindset that,, what if the next thing is interesting but I missed it"
Brother i also had that shorts issue but i found a solution, just uninstall the youtube app or disable it and use youtube from browser, shorts will not open directly like app and also youtube site is not addictive and easy like app is. Trust me i am doing it from last 6 months and it reduced 50% from ma screen time.
It's okay to watch RUclips on your PC or TV. I watch stuff on RUclips on my living room TV while I'm cooking or follow tutorials on my PC. I was able to translate modding tutorials into video game modding into a full time job. I think that's what the message is
One thing to remember guys is that not all screen time is bad! I love to read on my phone because I have access to more books or i love following along to yoga/workout vids! I'm also one that just loves having something to listen to so ill play youtube vids like its podcast a while I cook or clean. Or maybe i'm calling friends and loved ones, or maybe I'm just watching my favorite show. Your phone is a tool, so maybe it's not the phone or screen time thats a problem, its how you use it. My biggest advice would just be being conscientious of what your doing on your phone!
This is great! So many people say "phones are uselss" or "phones are horrible" yes, people stay on thier phone for too long and it can damage our brains, but people are forgetting that a phone has a serious great purpose for us as well, just like what you said, being able to communicate with your family and friends, learning healthy steps to life, watching exercise and productivity, music that reliefs stress and enhances happiness, information world wide and about health conditions and symptoms and watxhing shows and movies that also reliefs stress and enhances happiness and also has a few messages to us, so just like what you said, if you spend an enormous time on your phone but it's mostly these instead of useless social media, then you shouldn't worry too much about reducing your screen time :)
I already did most of the things you suggested but I find myself spending so much time just going through the apps of my homescreen, just staring at my homscreen, bored, withouteven feeling like opening any app. That is when I know the addiction is really hitting hard. I just feel bored on my phone, like the only things I can do in my life are on my phone, when that is totally not the case. I scare myself sometimes, by being like this...
I've been there before, what helped me was transitioning out of using my phone all the time. You can't just expect to break your attiction over night so I would try getting rid of apps that you can mindlessly scroll on but leaving some that give you something to do! Like for me I love reading on my libby app because it felt like scrolling for me. This than helped me with my focus and got me reading real books quickly! If you dont like reading find something else that's productive and peaks your interest (maybe like duolingo or something like that). Another tip I would say is figure out what you get out of scrolling for me I really like just having something to listen to, so instead I listen to music and play podcast's. Just really try and be conscientious of why you're on your phone when you are. You got this and I hope you find something that works for you ❤️
it’ll take time to break an addiction, what’s helped me so far (i’m only on day 2😬) is to turn off all notifications from apps that i use often (snapchat, tiktok, instagram etc), and use a feature from the iphone settings app called app limits, and i’ve set it to 1,5 hours (it’s a lot now but slowly i’ll try and decrease it). when i get an urge to use my phone i try my best to do something else instead, and not give in to the feeling that i “need” to check what’s happening on the app. i also find myself mindlessly looking at my phone and not doing anything on it🥲🥲 another thing that’s helping me is finding new hobbies to do instead of using my phone, hobbies like crocheting, drawing, making bracelets, reading etc. i’m not sure if this is helpful or if it’s just rambling for you😅but i wish u luck, we can do this
You need to have these screen time management techniques but ALSO need to have phone replacements activities. Workouts/exercise, study, career development, socialisation, life/to-do planning time. Every time you open your phone for no good reason do 10-15 pushups and 20 sit ups. Instead of spend an hour on phone, grab some pen and paper and spend an hour or so writing up a routine to replace phone use. Addictions get to us the most when we are bored and/or have nothing better to do (or we do have better things to do, but haven’t planned doing them).
@@OnlyAchievingHere truth is I am a student in her last year of highschool with finals approaching faster than ever. I have tons of things to do and my phone is actually keeping me from doing those. I maybe used to go on my phone because of boredom 5 years ago, but now it's a pure addiction and it trully feels like a disease. Trust me I try everyday to do other things and I have so many hobbies that I enjoy but that I stopped doing because of that addiction. Basically it seems like you're suggesting solutions to the problem that the problem keeps me from doing... so it's gonna be difficult to get out of that cycle 😅 I already have plenty of screen time limits and timers on every app but I always end up adding time because the timer closes the app while I was in the middle of a task that I considered I could not give up on (for instance, replying to someone on instagram, I could never leave someone on read even tho there is a 'good' reason behind it). I'll try harder to stop using my phone tho. Maybe reading and studying can help. I think that I might reach my screen time goal today by the way (I have set my goal to 3 hours max)
another one i do is to turn off fingerprint/face ID so you have to manually type in a passcode every time you open your phone. works especially well if you input a longer password because you don't necessarily feel like typing in a long password every time you want to check your phone
As someone who gets sensory overload from electronics, I always used the yellow filter so my eyes weren't strained but the grey-scale one really really helps more so thank you.
What helped for me was to find substitution for the time spent on your phone. I found myself on my phone mainly when I was bored and had nothing to do, it was my only way of relaxing when I was by myself. Instead, I started reading more, started playing an instrument, started djing. 3 years later I actually have tangible skills to be proud of!! (the band I play in now will release an album next month!) You can definitely do it!
@@ichosolemanuel6048 I understand your reasoning, but I think it’s more about which habits you feel are adding to your life and which aren’t. I don’t want to be spending my time compulsively on instagram, but if you enjoy watching the news and feel it’s useful, don’t hesitate!
As a teen, I'm on devices all the time, and I'm not proud of it. I don't want to be on a lot, but I just am. I try to get off, and then I eventually get back on. I am starting my journey of regaining 9 years of my life today. Thank you.❤

As a 3D game artist I spend a LOT of my time on computers and in front of screens (8 hours a day Mon-Fri). I don't mind it too much but then getting off and goin right to the phone afterwards has become so normal. Honestly felt like a breakthrough when you said to delete the most used (unnecessary) apps like Netflix, RUclips or Instagram. Get's you away from using the phone as an extension of a computer and makes it solely for business/normal phone stuff.
I’d like to say that the grayscale option really works, mainly because when you step away from your phone it will make the world look more interesting and you’ll want to be there more instead of online.
I feel like some comments missed the point of the video? Phones are great when used correctly, and I totally agree with that, but I think this video is addressing those who are mindlessly scrolling all the time (like me 😅). To me mindlessly scrolling is a waste of time, so this video is really helpful! I also think that if you want to identify the reason why you spend so much time on social media you first need take a step back from it. So I don’t think these tips are a way of “running away from your problems” but more like tips to help you get the time to think.
I saw this video just a day or two ago and immediately turned on these settings. It still feels a little weird, but I have barely used my phone since then, except for checking messages from friends and emails. I hope I can finally focus on university this next semester, and this will definitely help a lot! Thank you for the advice.
I never thought about kids in college spending hours on their phones. Yeah, you could never get anything done like school work and studying. Wow, this video can sure help students out.
This was honestly, a very well put video. I have ADHD so it's super hard to stay off my phone to get that dopamine. Definitely find myself in doom scrolling. I suppose I should look for some healthier means to get that dopamine. I say every so often that I am going to spend less time on my phone but never lasts long.
Since it’s not the first time RUclips recommended me these type of videos, I wanted to say it once for all: THESE VIDEOS ARE NOT FOR EVERYONE. Let me explain. So if you use your phone just for texting to people you don’t want to know and for, as this guy says, “scrolling” through RUclips Shorts and TikTok trying to find something funny that lets estrange you from reality, then yes, this video is for you. But if these hours on the screen have an actual purpose, like finding a new friend to chat with through a social media that lets you do that (like telegram, messenger, etc.) and exploring internet (and RUclips) content about your passions, than this is good for you and I know this because I found the meaning of my life with the combination of these two things. Think about that and don’t make arbitrary decisions just because everyone tells you to choose them.
@2u29wjiowk2iswj If you think the ancients were good and we are downgrading I’m sorry but you are wrong. One thing I learnt about history is that it repeats. If the boys back then weren’t addicted by social medias, they were addicted by alcohol, smoke, drugs etc. I’m not saying social medias are better, I’m saying that we are neither evolving or downgrading. The men cannot live without being addicted to something.
I would also add to set a "night mode", an hour before you go to sleep, your phone turns on the night filter and mutes your notifications. It has helped me a lot personally.
@@o0nickI wouldn’t unless you use your phone to communicate with people, or for emails & text messages. I’d just turn off notifications for apps that I use for entertainment or apps that could easily distract me

these tips are really good, thanks for sharing them! A lot changed fo me when i realized that im using scrolling as a procrastination tool, and just thinking about what i'm trying to avoid helps a lot
I do all these things except meditating and I'm not gonna lie, they do not help. this is just how to be more chill mentally, but they're not gonna get you off your phone by themselves
My real "problem" is chatting. Rn, I rarely find myself scrolling randomly except sometimes for reels, and it's happening less and less often. However, I chat a lot with my loved ones, in group chats and in dms. Especially rn that I am seeing/dating a guy that is studying abroad in Ireland (I live in italy) not being on my phone is HARD
but is that really a problem? being on the phone isn't a problem, it's more what we do on it. do you consider chatting with these people to be a waste of time? im guessing you don't and therefore i doubt it's a problem.
Then keep on chatting. This whole video is a little trick like these guides on "how to improve your life" it doesn't really mean anything. Using your cellphone is a routine, it makes sense the sum results in a ton of hours (years) because it's a routine. The toxicity and damage of it comes from somewhere else and this should be pretty obvious but some people (I suppose most people, actually) need a video like this to tell them that
Thank you so much for this! Just realizing that it can delete 11 years from my life is eye opening itself. I might not do all of this at once but it will definately help me cut back on my phone usage
Wow, congratulations on your impressive investment success! Your discipline and focus on delayed gratification is truly inspiring. I can't stress enough how good this video is. An advice for some struggling with this is to identify the type of media you are consuming from each app. For example Tiktok fries my dopamine receptors by constantly giving me different stuff to view every second, however whenever I use RUclips I watch long videos that doesn't fry my dopamine receptors at all, and I find that type of media to be useful, at least for me. Hope this helps
Turning of tap/raise to wake made the single biggest difference for me. Never realised how I subconsciously picked up the phone for no reason. Simply having the minor inconvenience of a black screen is enough to remind me to put my phone down and do something more useful. Great video!

I'd like to add that deleting favorite apps doesn't mean you can't USE those services. It's powerful to make yourself have to use the web version. Just having that little be of extra effort helps remind you not to be on it so much. Also, you can keep the app and delete it front the home screen. Again, just a bit of resistance can go a long way!
This has worked really well for me to cut down on RUclips time. It makes the experience just clunky enough that it's easier to not start, or to stop after a reasonable amount of time.

Careful with the grayscale color filter. The color can help you identify links and therefore protect you from viruses, in some cases. But other than that, I agree with everything.
@@atem8101 You're right, for many people this will be a great addition. Just for paranoid people and ones who have to take security very seriously, that's something to keep in mind. Sometimes while scrolling through comments on RUclips, I've almost clicked on bot links in the past on accident, but the blue color of the links has helped me know, where not to place my finger, and it let's me identify them quickly. On RUclips, links aren't underlined. Also on some e-mail apps, links aren't underlined, even though just clicking on a link in an e-mail can be dangerous. Not even WhatsApp has underlined links. (I'm using Android) And if you're just starting to go the "less-phone-usage" route, then you may still end up with several hours of phone usage per week and still watch some RUclips. Some people are basically required to regularly use WhatsApp and e-mail, due to their jobs. When using a mouse, you consciously have to press down the button to click on a link, but with a smartphone, this can easily happen on accident. But again, it's just something to keep in mind. For most people, the grayscale color filter is a great option! But some people might want to consider leaving that one out. I've had enough people get hacked and sending me links to malware, that I'd rather choose safety first.

*Step 8 and probably the most important* Hide your phone physically in a place that needs to several steps in order to get it again, like inside a desk drawer or on a shelf that is a bit higher than your extended arm length, this will make you forget about it and make you way more intentional about using it, also think about the times you are most likely to use a phone in, identify them, where and why, and avoid them by replacing the urge with another acitivity

Struggling with productivity is a hell of a problem in teenage years or college. Uninstalling apps might help to solve the problem of procrastination but if you still lack productivity even after that, there is something more such as enhancing your brainpower which I made video on.
One of the most practical, high quality RUclips videos I've seen. Disabling tap to wake is a particularly good tip. More often than not, putting away my phone for hours improves my mood. All these apps are engineered to be addictive and that's sort of dystopian.

You also open up so many opportunities for you future if you give it your all. Phones aren’t bad, but using your time on your phone wisely is super important ❤️
i get your point, but thinking that phones aren’t bad in general is just naive imo. they are literally made to make you addicted. for calling etc. you can just use a regular telephone
@@222pream You are absolutely right about that - however, it's also possible to take the same phone you've already got, and remove everything from it that makes it addicting. The real bottom line here is highlighting that like anything else, a phone is a tool that you can use in a good way or a bad way, and taking smart measures to make it more helpful rather than harmful is better than labeling everything bad. Many of us use our phones for work when we're outside and everything you said restricts that ability a lot. I get that social media can take up a lot of time but deleting it isn't the solution but rather learning self control works because inherently social media isn't bad it can allow you to connect with friends that you don't get to see in person often.
the apps are inherintly made to oppose everything you just said. Yes be strong and have self control, but some things are better off to avoid entirely that way you don't distract yourself with things like that.
I think it depends on whether you trust yourself to maintain self control or not. Deleting the app may be the only solution or for some, limiting it to certain uses would work just fine for others.

Once my girlfriend is local to me again, I will follow your suggestions. It’ll be about 7-8 months, but I’ve been meaning to do this sort of thing anyway. Thank you for the concise video.
Most of my screen time is usually RUclips when i don't really look at the screen, just let it run like a podcast. Another one is letterboxd when i write long reviews. I've always had my phone on silent and most of the notifications off. My screen time is usually 4 hrs, and i can't say im wasting them. Not to mention you can't really shop with grayscale on😂

Well said!
Thank u for this
Really, bro 👏

You got this and I hope you find something that works for you ❤️
it’ll take time to break an addiction, what’s helped me so far (i’m only on day 2😬) is to turn off all notifications from apps that i use often (snapchat, tiktok, instagram etc), and use a feature from the iphone settings app called app limits, and i’ve set it to 1,5 hours (it’s a lot now but slowly i’ll try and decrease it). when i get an urge to use my phone i try my best to do something else instead, and not give in to the feeling that i “need” to check what’s happening on the app.
i also find myself mindlessly looking at my phone and not doing anything on it🥲🥲
another thing that’s helping me is finding new hobbies to do instead of using my phone, hobbies like crocheting, drawing, making bracelets, reading etc.
i’m not sure if this is helpful or if it’s just rambling for you😅but i wish u luck, we can do this
You need to have these screen time management techniques but ALSO need to have phone replacements activities.
I'd recommend finding hobbies or things you can do without your phone, and maybe without leaving your house if it's more convenient

Right, this is what I’m saying. I find this comment not only astute, but very helpful to a lot of people

these tips are really good, thanks for sharing them! A lot changed fo me when i realized that im using scrolling as a procrastination tool, and just thinking about what i'm trying to avoid helps a lot
I must write this comment to thank you for answering for the questions I was not even aware that I should ask to myself
I'd argue that that is not much of a waste of time like mindlessly scrolling is because you're actively engaged in communicating with someone.
but is that really a problem? being on the phone isn't a problem, it's more what we do on it. do you consider chatting with these people to be a waste of time? im guessing you don't and therefore i doubt it's a problem.
as someone who hates texting ill usually save it for a phone call or in person unless it's really important

Careful with the grayscale color filter.
The color can help you identify links and therefore protect you from viruses, in some cases.
But other than that, I agree with everything.
Underlines do too, and you're not gonna get a virus on an iPhone. No one's gonna waste a zero day exploit on a normal person.
Links are most of the time underlined and if you are trying to reduce phone usage where and why the hell would you be pressing random links?
@@atem8101 You're right, for many people this will be a great addition.
Just for paranoid people and ones who have to take security very seriously, that's something to keep in mind.
Sometimes while scrolling through comments on RUclips, I've almost clicked on bot links in the past on accident, but the blue color of the links has helped me know, where not to place my finger, and it let's me identify them quickly.
On RUclips, links aren't underlined.
Also on some e-mail apps, links aren't underlined, even though just clicking on a link in an e-mail can be dangerous.
Not even WhatsApp has underlined links.
(I'm using Android)
And if you're just starting to go the "less-phone-usage" route, then you may still end up with several hours of phone usage per week and still watch some RUclips.
I don't really think this is a serious worry

*Step 8 and probably the most important*
Hide your phone physically in a place that needs to several steps in order to get it again, like inside a desk drawer or on a shelf that is a bit higher than your extended arm length, this will make you forget about it and make you way more intentional about using it, also think about the times you are most likely to use a phone in, identify them, where and why, and avoid them by replacing the urge with another acitivity

i’ve been hooked and very addicted to my phone since i got a kindle at age 7. i’m 16 now and it’s such a difficult addiction. i never get anything done and i stay up far too late. for example it’s 1:20 am as i write this. my moms giving me two days to show some responsibility otherwise she’s taking my phone at night and putting strict time restrictions on it (again). i’m really hoping that this helps and that i can pull myself out of the massive hole i’ve dug myself over the 9+ years i’ve been struggling. thank you for the tips
When you love being on your phone, instead of mindlessly scrolling, become the person who supplies the content. You get to be on your phone, but you get to master a skill at the same time. You also open up so many opportunities for you future if you give it your all. Phones aren’t bad, but using your time on your phone wisely is super important ❤️
I agree!
The real answer!!
A worthy comment
i get your point, but thinking that phones aren’t bad in general is just naive imo. they are literally made to make you addicted. for calling etc. you can just use a regular telephone
Work smarter, not harder!
the problem isnt doing these changes but keeping these changes. Deleting these apps doesnt mean shit if you can just re install them again
I turned on Grayscale and I like it more, my times have now gone up because everything looks so much cooler!
I’m so glad I found your channel I’m trying to get myself back up to my normal self
I removed TikTok, I’m too proud of myself😭 I haven’t been there for 1 days
it's why I don't watch tiktok
Time to add a 2?

I've never had TikTok and I think it's saved me 9 years of my life over the last 3 years
tiktok is hell
POV: mum messages me saying she has been kidnapped and needs me to call the police, but I turned all notifications off 🗿
You work for 40yrs to have $1m in your retirement, Meanwhile some people are putting just $10k in a meme coin for just few months and now they are multi millionaires. I pray that anyone who reads this will be successful in life
You're right, but a lot of people remain poor due to ignorance.
Not because of ignorance, It's because of the high rate of unprofessionalism in the crypto market.
As a beginner investor, it's essential for you to have a mentor to keep you accountable . Myself I'm guided by Mrs Olivia Brown, a widely known crypto consultant
That's right, you need an experienced trader to make good profits trading cryptocurrencies
I will recommend my current trader
Mrs Olivia Brown, she is from USA and her strategies are earning a lot of profit for me
If in less than 6 month the video has over 2.5 Million views with no add. Then you know people are trying as much as they can to be productive. It shows how people are tired of living the virtual life... guys we all can do it. Just a matter of determinations.
Many of us use our phones for work when we're outside and everything you said restricts that ability a lot. I get that social media can take up a lot of time but deleting it isn't the solution but rather learning self control works because inherently social media isn't bad it can allow you to connect with friends that you don't get to see in person often.
I do not agree. Many are not able to.
You’re coping
the apps are inherintly made to oppose everything you just said. Yes be strong and have self control, but some things are better off to avoid entirely that way you don't distract yourself with things like that.
I think it depends on whether you trust yourself to maintain self control or not. Deleting the app may be the only solution or for some, limiting it to certain uses would work just fine for others.
@@julius.2003Nah, he's right.
(partially)
Bro Ask their own subscribers to delete RUclips 💀💀💀
No dude
He pretty much meant if it was like if it youtube is a problem for you, like an addiction, or if you aren't using it productively.
He wants to help you. Not get subscribers.
That's how much he cares
This video is amazing! I’m now going to watch it another 8 times so I can save the entirety of my lifespan
it’s weird that we’ve spent so much years developing these devices that are our phones and now we have to turn off many of their functionalities for our own good. great video!!
So happy people are becoming more aware of this! I have timers on my apps and have improved my time by over 50%! Having a tdl daily is great too!
For reference
I followed all tips besides 2 and 7 already before this video and my average screentime is 3 hours. Those two steps will definitely impact your screentime a lot.
5:09 mans has the Bible app, much respect 🙏🏼

Thanks for these settings much appreciated, especially the tap and raise to wake one.
ive never been one to allow app notifs and it shocks me to realize that people actually enable notifs for stuff like videogames and youtube lol
I think you’re right about all of this. I just moved across the country from my family and friends, and lots of content is how we interact for now sadly.
Once my girlfriend is local to me again, I will follow your suggestions. It’ll be about 7-8 months, but I’ve been meaning to do this sort of thing anyway.
Thank you for the concise video.
Same here
Most of my screen time is usually RUclips when i don't really look at the screen, just let it run like a podcast. Another one is letterboxd when i write long reviews. I've always had my phone on silent and most of the notifications off. My screen time is usually 4 hrs, and i can't say im wasting them. Not to mention you can't really shop with grayscale on😂
I feel you, I use RUclips like podcasts mainly and grayscale is just impractical. I also use my phone for music, shows, and sometimes games though
the best video ive wtched on yt in my life, you trully changed my life thank you so much keep up the great work...
