I found a Sally Rooney hardcover for like $4, so I bought it and I'm excited to find out if I like her writing or not lol. It seems like she either hits or misses with tastes.

Sally Rooney is definitely a love it or hate it author. I believe in reading a few books to give the author a chance and I disliked all of them, and Normal People was my least favourite of them all. A good friend of mine, whose opinion on books I absolutely respect, adores her writing.
I’m glad you found a cheap copy of the book and it would be interesting to see which side of the coin you fall to with her writing. Happy reading!

I hated it. The writing style is not very nice and the plot (Normal People) was just two unlikable White people complaining about secretly pining for each other, while there seemed to be more interesting plot points hinted at.

it always astonishes me how people have just failed to understand that Austen is a troll -- she is so funny, sarcastic, witty, she lets you in on the joke, but she also makes fun of you, and you love it -- her writing is so so funny. you're right, Jack, when people hear that a book is a classic, i think they take it with such seriousness that they can miss it for what it is. like when people fail to understand how much of Shakespear is supposed to be funny.

Hello Jack! I love your videos and your personality ❤ please remember that goodreads is also used by spanish speakers and a lot of us read books originally written in english, it may be a non ironic "No me gustó" 😅. Another thing if you liked Emma I think you may enjoy Iphigenia from the venezuelan writer Teresa de la Parra, the full title of the book is: Iphigenia (the diary of a young lady that wrote because she was bored) it's not for everyone and I don't know how it translates to english but I love it and the protagonist gives me Emma vibes, the themes are different though.

Haven't read many of these, but I genuinely loved Emma. The whole point is that she's a meddlesome shrew and all her machinations come to naught and everyone's much the happier for it, including her.
The whole point is getting over oneself.

I love “Emma” and I’m dying to finally watch the movie but I haven’t been able to yet! And I finished the book 3 years ago!!!
Also, “Emma” is actually quite an eventful book right off the bat, like, I recently read “Persuasion” and that took about 80 pages for something interesting to happen 💀

The Normal People sequel they're probably talking about is "At the Clinic"! It was Sally Rooney's short story that was published in the White Review in 2016 and then she wrote Normal People after!

I kowkey get the normal people reviews tho 😭. I havent read that book, but i tried Beautiful World, Where Are You? and everything just felt so...forced. Maybe because it was my first real literary novel, but people having exstisential crisises to eachother over email felt so ridiculous, and then that one phone call...safe to say i dnfed after about 80 pages.

In addition to being extremely challenging to read, 1984 deals with a very difficult subject. Although I purchased the book, I ultimately listened to it. Despite the book's subject, the girl who read it had such a soft, angelic voice that it turned out to be a passable read. The subject matter is extremely difficult, particularly for me as I reside in Romania, a country where communism was rife and these events were real and widespread. Though I was fortunate enough to be born when it was coming to an end, reading this book felt a lot like reading a history book because I knew the stories from my parents and grandparents.
Finally, I would say that this is a book that I highly recommend listening to on audio and having a soft-spoken reader. The book is difficult enough. The reader does not have to speak in a dramatic manner because doing so could make you feel down afterwards.

Not people criticizing Emma for being spoiled and annoying but then completely forgetting that that’s the point of her character and then ignoring how she redeems herself in the end and takes accountability for her actions.

I’ve tried reading Emma three different times and I just get so confused by all the characters and forget who’s who in the gossip. I feel like I need to watch the movie first so I can’t picture the person in my head because I get so lost and have to flip back and be like “what who are we gossiping about again??”

The way that i review books is:
1* = DNF but interested me enough to actually pick it up and try it
    2* = I finished it, but I hated it
    3* = Things I liked, things I didn't like
4* = Few changes but on the whole, I really enjoyed this
5* = Holy grail and hardly any ever get this
Interested to know if anyone else is like this 😅xx

Alice from The Bookcastle did a similar thing, but instead of just reading and reacting she also tried to predict what aspects of the book some people would hate. And she went into specifics, so I'd like Jack to do this twist too. In this video there were a few vague or general guesses, so I think this would be an interesting upgrade. Love the video, notwithstanding!
