12:00 I actually really loved Educated, and I was really curious about the part where she just suddenly gets into Cambridge and that sort of academic success kind of follows her and she never deeply explains all that. I had two reactions first I was of course mind-blown and impressed, but a part of me also felt a little stung because as someone who's found getting into higher education so harrowing and emotionally exhausting by itself minus all that childhood trauma, I think I was more personally invested in how it just happened to her seemingly magically, like i felt some nasty envy. My personal theory about why she does not go into a lot of depth into that is because it has the potential to distract from what her point is (how education helped her to change her life), and to some degree I think not discussing those details also make it easy to see why she specifically struggled with such a strong imposter syndrome later on and almost gave up. By the end of the book, I did not really question the transition as much and found her story really impactful.
I think I had a similar reaction, I appreciate the book and understand what she says, but as someone who literally spiralled into depression while writing my thesis, I did feel a bit cheated by that transition and her basically having such a successful academic life.
I'm just about to finish reading Educated. I really enjoyed the read, well, maybe "enjoyed" isn't the right word... I was holding back tears reading many parts of the book. Personally I think why Westover sort of skipped over the process of her transition was to form a more impactful contrast between her "uneducated" self and her educated self, and maybe describing her transition in detail would soften that contrast... Perhaps... :)
Yes to this comment and it’s replies. I was always top of my class at school and I had a really hard time in college. She went from not going to school and not knowing about the Holocaust to BYU and then Cambridge? The rest was super shocking and the book is well written, but that part is a major plot hole.
Just wanted to drop in and thank you, Jack, for your videos. I loved, loved, loved this one. I am a lifelong reader and I'm guessing at 73, I am one of your "wiser" (a term my doctor uses instead of older) followers. My "Books of Interest" Pinterest page is overflowing because of you -- that is not a bad thing at all. I so enjoy your insights into books.
The highest rated of the books I’ve read since I started using Goodreads is This Thing of Darkness (4.51). Absolutely amazing book. A fictional portrayal of the captain of the Beagle and Charles Darwin. Their overlapping journeys encompassing discovery, joy, horror, fame, infamy and madness.
Heartstopper was sooooooo good and I am probably going to watch it again today. Do I have anything else to do? Yes. Do I care? Absolutely not! Because that show was great!!!
Hey Jack, I hope you don’t feel pressured to put out videos for your audience. Take a break if you don’t feel good or just don’t feel like making them. Enjoyed this as always!!
I hope you’ll get soon back to a better mental space ! I am very thankful for your videos, love the energy and sincerity you exude! Take the necessary time to focus on yourself and come back stronger👊🏾
I like the concept of this video, but I feel Goodreads needs to work on its rating system. Sometimes a book is a 3.5 star, you know it's not bad enough to be 3, but not good enough to get a 4. I wish they add a .5 between each stars. That's why I've been using Storygraph since Jack suggested it although the interface and community over on GR is much better.
the highest rated book i've read is All The Young Dudes (4.81 average!). Honestly i’d love for Jack to read it cause it’s such a good fanfiction and i want to know what he'd think of it :)
if you want to try making videos other than book reviews, you could do a "TV/Movie adaption vs Book" type of series? For example how does the Pride and Prejudice movie change things compared to the book? Is the casting as the characters are described? Did they change the ending? Do you like the book or movie better etc
Graphic novels are a quick read and cover so many genres. I think it would be great if you followed up heartstopper with other LGBT graphic novels, like from Tillie Walden and Molly Knox Osterag. Or just graphic novels in general.
Hi Jack, you are wonderful and bring so much joy to my bookish feed. Please know you are appreciated and that we all feel shitty sometimes and it’s ok to take a break! Hope you fill your days with what you love and make your way toward feeling better! Sending hugs
The boy, the mole, the fox and the horse. One of my favorite books 💜 I read it to my kids and make it interactive, asking them questions that come up in the book. Their answers warm my heart.
I sort of see where you’re coming from about educated, but I always felt like the point was to follow her internal learning and self education more than the institutions she ended up in. What I found powerful about her story was watching her slowly question things about her upbringing, and understanding how deep the indoctrination went
I don't know if you are interested at all in manga, but Girls Last Tour is probably my favourite book of all time. It's a post apocalypse, last two people on Earth type of deal where the protagonists discuss philosophical questions and question our current societal norms whilst trying to reach the top of a massive multilayered tower. It's very short, only taking around a day to complete, but it's absolutely beautiful and genuinely changed how I look at the world. It's very easily accessible online and not too hard to get physical. The ending is probably my favourite ending in anything ever and the art is beautiful as a bonus too.
