Just a quick comment about House on the Cerulean sea at 20:31 -- it's not about foster homes (although Indigenous children are also disproportionately placed into foster care) but about Residential Schools, which the Canadian government forced Indigenous children to go to in order to "assimilate" them. There was a LOT of abuse, and some kids were even killed. And unfortunately, the repercussions of this government policy are still being felt in Indigenous communities.
came to say this! i actually studied the controversies of this book and author in my literature/publishing degree as the author isn’t canadian and a lot of people outside of canada are unaware of just how horrible canada’s history is which has shielded the book from receiving a lot of the criticism it may have got if more people knew about what the content is actually based on. it’s definitely an interesting thing to think about!
The feeling of always trying to perpetually catch up on reading books previously published is so true. It's never ending. It's both amazing and daunting to think about.
⬇️ spanish love deception hate club!! for me enemies to lovers only works in fantasy when two people can be from enemy kingdoms or be on opposite sides of a war but in contemporary it just feels like the misunderstanding trope mixed with people being petty and immature
I completely agree! I think the most we can get in contemporary romance is rivals to lovers. But even in Spanish love deception it wasn't even rivals, it was just one character being antagonistic the entire book for no reason.
@@eurywoulahan7412 i think what they meant was that the term 'enemies' just doesn't really fit the truth of what most of these books are about! sure, you might have hated that person at some point but they weren't really your enemy in the sense of an archnemesis. maybe haters to lovers describes it better but calling it enemy seems a bit of a reach honestly
Yeah! While reading Babel, I thought I may be too cynical or have above average contextual knowledge since I studied history because I felt similarly. I still really loved it and felt really touched by it, but I'm glad it wasn't just me feeling like this.
Jack please give Kristin Hannah another chance! Four Winds is not one I’d recommend to a first time Kristin Hannah reader even though I enjoy everything she writes. Try The Nightingale, The Great Alone, Night Road, or Firefly Lane. I have not read The Women yet although I’ve heard great things. Great video as always!! 😊
I agree! I was surprised to hear Jack didn't like her, but if he's only read Four Winds, maybe I'm not so surprised. The Great Alone is absolutely stunning. A lot of people like The Nightingale, but it's actually my least favorite. I have The Women on my physical TBR but haven't gotten to it yet.
It seems obvious to say, but it feels like this tells us more about the type of people that use Goodreads than it does about which books are generally popular and I say this as a Goodreads user. I own 3 of the books on the list, have read 2 and have another 7 on my TBR shelf.
I am Mexican and I have read American dirt. I think it’s a good book. I think it can be a little bit, exaggerated about the experience of immigrating from Mexico, through Mexico to the United States. It is very heavy with the imagery. If you would like a memoir that has a similar story, not as tragic, Solito by Javier Zamora is excellent!
The Margaret Qualley miniseries isn't based on the fiction book The Maid, it's based on the memoir "Maid: Hard Work, Low Pay, and a Mother's Will to Survive" by Stephanie Land!
I have read 8/60 😅 which is not bad . -Anxious people ( fredrik backman is my fav author , all of his books are amazing) - Wicked king , queen of nothing (i loved the cruel prince trilogy , trust me it gets better after cruel prince) - project hail mary (it was so fun to read , loved it ) - silent patient ( one of my most fav books , if you’re in a reading slump this is the book for you , i read it in 1 day ) - invisible life of addie larue - midnight library ( i loved the premise of this book and its an easy read , I really enjoyed it) - Agggtm ( a fun read if you’re in slump this’ll help too ) .
I'm gonna get so much hate for this but I swear this GORGEOUS hair of Jack's is very reminscent of "floppy" hair from the 90s!! AND I LOOOOOOVE IT!! Also, great video as always 💌Sending love from DC!!💌
I've read 9 of these! Crying in H Mart, Anxious People, The House in the Cerulean Sea, Icebreaker, I'm Glad My Mom Died, Red White and Royal Blue, Malibu Rising, Happy Place, and Beach Read (I'm grinding to read all of Emily Henry's books). In my physical TBR, I have The Vanishing Half, People We Meet on Vacation, and The Midnight Library. And you've given me at least 1/3 of these recs👀
The ones I've read: Anxious People (in the Dutch translation: Angstige Mensen, I absolutely loved this one), The House in the Cerulean Sea (I thought it was cute but the way they talked abour the protagonists weight and body made me uncomfortable)
hey jack! if you want to get into fantasy check out tress of the emerald sea! its super easy to get into, lovable characters, a hilarious narrator and just all around a fun story!
“In five years” is a horrible horrible book. The premise is intriguing, but it’s ruined because the main character is a horrible person and betrays her best friend in an unforgivable way (and makes it seem like no big deal). I was disgusted after reading it
I've read nine of these books: In Five Years, Divine Rivals, The Maid, The House on the Cerulean Sea, Book Lovers, Beach Read, People We Meet On Vacation, and Daisy Jones and The Six. I own nine of these but have yet to read them: Crying in H-Mart, Carrie Soto is Back, Remarkably Bright Creatures, Things We Never Got Over, Happy Place, Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow, Malibu Rising, Lessons in Chemistry, and The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue.
You absolutely HAVE TO start reading Lucy Foley. I'd suggest you to start with The Guest List - I've read quite a few classics I've found my hands on but it still remains to be a very memorable read. A masterclass on how to write character profiles - that too, in first person, all through the way. I'd really wanna see you talk about the book someday.
I think you need to give The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah, the four winds isn’t for everyone. If you do not like the nightingale then Kristin Hannah isn’t for you.
I have only read ten of these and I am not even sorry. I've read 120 books so far this year, so it's not for lack of reading. A note about Frieda McFadden - All of her books that I have read have had a similar tone. I feel like you can read one and you have read them all.
okay, most of the books i've read/put on tbr from this list are literally because of you another not lover of book lovers btw, it was the first book from her i've read and i got scared i would hate them all, but i LOVED everything except it
If you read any books by Ana Huang, PLEASE read the King of Sin series. I read the first two books of the twisted series and didn't really like them that much. So if you ever read her books please give this series a try.

JACK. I had to pause the video to tell you that you’re absolutely missing out on Kristin Hannah!!!! I’ve read 4 of hers this year, the nightingale(devastating), four winds, the women, and the great alone. The four winds was my least favorite, although I did enjoy it. I think you neeeeeeed to read the Nightingale.
20:30 writing an alagorical fiction comparing Indigenous children to monsters, when you as an author are not also Indigenous, is not it. And actual Indigenous folk have called this out.
You just showed up on my suggestions and I realised I’d for sure get along with your recommendations at your love for Fredrick Backman. I struggle to actually find books I really want to read because that man elevated my bar so much… yes, super heartwarming and human and raw and flawed characters with an incredible humour. The Beartown trilogy ripped me apart in a way I didn’t know was possible. The story was able to stitch me back up again, but left a few bits artfully unsown. Just brilliant.
I loved "In 5 Years" - I read it without looking up anything about it. Be warned that I hated/got frustrated with the main character/first 75% of the book, but that last 25% was really good. To me, all of Serle's work, I hate every minute of it, but then I can't stop thinking about her books for a month after I'm done reading them. So, I guess her work is good? lol idk!!
I hate all the enemies to lovers books i read but i still have hope... im never going to believe such a thing isnt possible, especially when i actually have had a enemies to friends situation with my now best friend, i just need to find that book!
Read 14 Want to read 16 None of the ones I’ve read from this list were over 4 stars for me and I rated the guest list 1 star. Also Crescent city was my least favourite SJM book - rated that one a 2 but love ACOTAR from book 2 onwards 🤷🏼♀️
Jack! Read the silent patient please!!! The Maidens was a bit hard for me to get into too, but I really liked The Silent Patient. Not cause of the writing or anything but the story was nice. I'm so curious what you'd think of it.
I’m not very good at reading trending books, so I’m honestly surprised I got to 5! The Silent Patient, The Midnight Library, The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue, Red, White & Royal Blue, and I’m Glad My Mom Died. Jennette McCurdy’s was definitely the best one of those. The rest were 3-4 stars for me (RW&RB can have an honorable mention for being cute). I ended up rating the Silent Patient the lowest among them, but mostly because I guessed the ending. Which is a big problem for me with mysteries/thrillers in general… though I get the idea that most people didn’t see the ending coming, so don’t take my word for it lol
Divine Rivals surprised me. It was put together better and was more interesting than most romantasy books. The characters exist for more than witty/snarky comments and lusting after each other...and it doesnt seem to have been written when someone was in highschool with minimal life experience
i want to read like 22 of these books, but i’ve only read 9. i also only got back into reading last year after not really reading novels for 5 years so a win is a win
Hi, I really really need to straighten something up about your very brief description of what "The House in the Cerulean Sea" is based on. This is NOT about simply "mistreated" kids in "foster homes", this story was inspired by Residential schools in Canada, aka the 60's Scoop. Residential Schools ran from the mid-1800s to 1996, with the intent to make Indigenous children Christian and "saved" from their own "savage" culture. This was not a foster system, but child imprisonment. This was not "mistreatment" it was forced assimilation, psychological abuse, physical abuse, sexual abuse, and OFTEN murder. It was genocide. It is probably the BIGGEST stain on the entire documented history of Canada, and that is saying something, considering we are truly not much better than our Southern neighbours, politically (no shade intended, just going off the cultural understanding of the difference between "nice" Canada and the USA). As a Canadian who had to relearn the GROSSLY hidden truth of our country, and undo misconceptions that they literally start teaching us from elementary school on, it is essential to me that this is understood correctly. I HIGHLY recommend that you do more research on this, because it is lowkey insane to me that people aren't talking about the problematic origins of that story.
I wont lie I DNF’d the Housemaid because the writing is just SO annoying. It feels so surface level that it felt like parody but it wasn’t. I saw a Goodreads review that called it “Dear Diary ass writing” and I cant agree more
19:56 The Maid is one of the few books that pisses me off, because it feels like the author just googled "symptoms of autism", made the main character talk like Sheldon Copper from the big bang theory, and called it good. I'm not autistic, but I was upset on behalf of the autistic community. The second hand embarrassment was insane. There's a Mexican character that is an illegal immigrant and is involved in gang activity (I'm Mexican so it really pisses me off). Yet that book has won good reads awards... How????
Making a comment of which of the books I've read and editing it as i watch. I've read 2: Such A Fun Age, Carrie Soto Is Back I haven't read The Queen Of Nothing or The Wicked King but yeah I didn't love The Cruel Prince so I didn't continue the series. I've read a few books by Tessa Bailey, not It Happened One Summer though. Her books just aren't for me I don't think.
I have only read 1 of these books, but I have 2 others on my TBR, and I want to read at least 3 others on the list. Being Dyslexic I'm not the biggest reader, so I am fine with this.
Going through this list and realizing I've only read 12 was eye-opening. But I also tallied up the number I just don't want to read and that ended up being 41 so I'm weirdly fine with that
A little more info on House in the Cerulean Sea. It was based on the 60's Scoop, which is considered to be an act of genocide. Very serious subject and a dark time in Canadian history. Klune though that was an interesting concept and decided to write a sweet little book about it with the message, "see, it's not so bad after all." Not a good book to read or recommend.
I've only read 9 of these and I want to read 18 (most of which I only want to read because it seems like everyone else has already read them and I want to be part of the conversation too)
I think you underestimate how many books people pick up because of you and get popular
Yes!!! like Happy All the Time!!!! Such a beaut ❤, never would’ve known about if not for Jack!!
exactly!!!!
this video should be called: how many books did jack not realize he turned into popular picks?
the hair has been looking great lately jack
I was going to say the same thing! Such volume

It's not fantasy books that have all the same names and covers, Jack. It's _romantasy_ books. There's a big difference!
Oh Jack, you didn't talk about it, but I know how disappointed you were to not find Sally Rooney in this list. Me too.
Jack, I watch your videos for book recommendations, half my library are your recommendations that I have loved!!!

You're the reason I end up reading half the books I do each year!
I've read 20, want to read 23, and don't want to read 17 which I feel like is pretty even all things considered!
I didn't even knew jack has a second channel ❤ imagine my excitement when I found out 😂🎉
I think I'm at around 20, with 5 more on my physical TBR shelf and most of the others (except Colleen Hoover - NEVER AGAIN) on my virtual TBR.
Hey all I can say is I’m just happy Verity didn’t make the list. Phew.
OMG I know!!
this is so off topic but just wanted to say your hair has been looking great lately, it really suits you!
Wow, it feels illegal to be this early.
hey I'll take 11/60 read so far! Even more on my TBR
i've read 16 of these books but was surprised to find that none of them were on my TBR
Going through this list and realizing I've only read 12 was eye-opening. But I also tallied up the number I just don't want to read and that ended up being 41 so I'm weirdly fine with that
Crazy how I have read only 1 of them shows I don't read popular books. And that 1 book is Midnight Library which I did not like.
I've only read 9 of these and I want to read 18 (most of which I only want to read because it seems like everyone else has already read them and I want to be part of the conversation too)
I thought Hamnet by Maggie o'Farrell might have been in there. Also Piranesi Susanna Clarke.
I've read 26, of which the vast majority come from the top 30 which I found interesting!
I read 1/3 of those, which was higher than I expected. I don't really read thrillers, romcoms, or romfantasies.
