Haha! Using a tripod gives me much worse than anxiety 😂 that comp just wouldn’t be possible with one, too close to the wall. Handheld stacking is a breeze, as long as you’re not bouncing around like a maniac 😆Thanks mate!
Wow! What a great perspective to visualise your images…letting the area speak to you! Will try this method next time I’m out at our local beach area. Excellent tutorial 🤗
Wow - what a wild feeling in that spot. Thanks for sharing your time Will. I love how you invite people to listen to the space they are in - let it speak to them! To then respond that way in the image capturing. It's great knowing that there are others who engage photography this way. For me in an ancient land with an ancient peoples it's the best way to gently step through my time on this planet.
Glad you enjoyed it! Definitely worth exploring the handheld approach if you can. It'll really open up new compositional options and change your workflow.
I've got a bit hooked on you my bro since I took your masterclass, and I'm continuously impressed. I'm thoroughly enjoying your simple and humble approach to photography, encouraged. Keep up the solid work bro. Love the vans! From the Mighty Waikato!
I've been there about 10 times and I always get a sense of an imposing prehistoric landscape. I've done both, planned shot and just turning up. Both have merit but I agree just getting to a place and taking time to look. Great advice William!
I really enjoyed watching this. I love knowing that I am not limited to F8 and F22 ... it has stunted me for so long now but have started experimenting the whole range.
I just discovered your youtube channel and appreciate your attitude about seascape photography. I especially related to the part where you were lining up a landscape, then had to completely change your settings to create an image of oncoming birds.... something that happens to me all the time. Thank you for sharing these wonderful moments.
Came across you from an ad on RUclips mate. Loved the ad, as it was fun and different. I recently went to Bombo for Astro. Must have been the other side of that stone wall.. Never did see the ocean (was dark), love your style and loved the images - Recently moved to Wollongong, Ill definately have to chekc out Bombo at Sunrise.. Thanks Mate
Thanks Dave, unreal mate. Means a lot to have you swing by the channel and subscribe. I was born and raised in the gong but NZ based now. You’ve got some great seascapes there to work with. Hope you enjoy getting amongst it and thanks again :)
Really enjoyed this Will and so true about the problem of tunnel-vision re a single composition mindset. I've found this at my local on the northern beaches (also shot there probably 50 -100 times) and still finding new compositions. One thing I find helps is to scout out the area during the afternoon/evening when the time constraints aren't as pressing and explore during a similar tide to what you'll have at sunrise. Given the light changes so fast at dawn it's often a bit of race to find a composition that works. Mind you I've been surprised how after the adrenaline rush of shooting the sunrise shots you can often find a new composition after sunrise that just works!
Well said mate, and thanks again for your thoughts. I must admit, I work best 'under pressure' and in the heat of the moment, when I have less time to think and am just operating in a state of flow and instinct. Most of the time I don't even begin looking for a composition unless the light is doing its thing. Very different to how I first started out.
Fantastic Will! Love the advice of just allowing yourself to get there without anything planned in your head and being spontaneous and just letting everything unfold. Beautiful shots and great location! Thank you for sharing, very useful valuable advice 🌊🌊🌊
Had the pleasure of watching your interview with Nick Page this morning, really got a lot out of it. Decided to check out some of your work and wow those images from Bombo Quarry were amazing. Like your thoughts on shutter speeds for water movements, might not make the hand held at 1/3rd sec due to age and hand shakes, but enjoyed the way you have mastered it .🙌🙌👏👏
Great video Will. Always best just to be there, enjoying the moment and the beautiful, amazing world we live in. Great captures and awesome thought works behind the video.
Thanks Will for another great video and advice. In addition to all your photos, I'm impressed that you are able to video yourself at the same time! Maybe you should have a video on that! 😁
Haha, thank you Ken! Slowly filming less and less and utilising a videographer mate these days, just to allow me to concentrate on the more important stuff. Nothing worse then getting home and reviewing the footage and finding that the angle was off or I was chopping my head off 😂
And what an absolutely banging image to boot! Love your approach, it’s definitely rubbing off. 😃 (though i did just delete one of my seascapes in disgust after seeing your end result here haha)
You need a camera with stabilisation (IBIS), which most mirrorless bodies have. I haven’t used a tripod in years. Most people could get away without using one but it becomes a habit. I prefer not to use one as it frees me up creatively. Cheers.
Went there about a week ago for sunrise. Amazing location. Not being very nimble I had to stay put but loved trying to get the waves crashing. You had great colour 👏
Awesome video mate. Have started following you on Vero as well. I am a passionate landscape photographer here in Victoria, Australia. Would love to shoot with you one day.
Thanks Dan, much appreciated mate 🙏🏻 I moved to NZ 5yrs ago now, but Bombo and the Illawarra is my old stomping ground. All the best on your photography journey.
Hey Will! I found your channel a few months ago and instantly fell in love with your videos! You are extremely talented and teach so clearly. My love for photography has only grown! I noticed in this video while watching you compose the shot that your view finder showed a very cool image. Do you usually shoot in manual white balance? And if so, do you try to shoot in a lower Kelvin than the auto would suggest? Obviously it depends on the environment, but with that gorgeous sunrise I was surprised by how cool the image was out of camera. I also noticed you switched to the 12-24mm from the 16-35mm. I am looking at buying the 16-35mm PZ but I did like the way the 12mm looked. How often do you take photos in that 12-16mm range that I would be missing?
Thanks so much mate! Really appreciate it. I usually just leave the WB on auto and then adjust colour in post. See my latest grading video for an idea of my approach. Yeah I got the 12-24mm about a year or so ago. Where I live, it’s very handy for forest scenes and especially the steep mountain valleys. So it totally depends where you live and what you usually shoot. I use the 12-14mm range a lot though now. Only down side is the edges are much softer.
@@WilliamPatinoPhotography awesome, thanks for feedback! I appreciate it. Since I’m not typically by large valleys or mountains I’ll add the 16-35 to my current line up of a 100-400 and 28-75. Should be set from there. Keep killing it!
50mm or wider, I will get 1/10 sharp just about every time. Typically can shoot as slow as 1/4 if I’m on the wide angle. If you’re using a DSLR then you will need a tripod though.
Focus stacking with NO tripod gives me the worst anxiety possible! Props to yourself Will, I could NEVER!
Haha! Using a tripod gives me much worse than anxiety 😂 that comp just wouldn’t be possible with one, too close to the wall. Handheld stacking is a breeze, as long as you’re not bouncing around like a maniac 😆Thanks mate!
You're absolutely correct let the creativity kick in free the mind.
fantastic video and shots. I can't believe i've only just found you on Vero! amazing work
Legend! Thank you Paul!
Holy Smokies! Love love this!! You're doing amazing my friend!
Thanks Sarah. Hope you’re having fun over there! :)

First-rate ! Beautiful setting and images.
Cheers Doug! Appreciate the support mate :)
Awesome to watch and just really enjoyed it. Thanks William.
Thanks Nick :)
Definitely agree having a open mind when going to a place you been to before is the best way to find something different.
Right on man 👊🏻

Beautiful. Thanks Denise!! :)
Great video! It's awesome to see how you mix science with emotion to create art.
... did a seagull get absolutely pummelled at 1:24?
The big fella has left a comment! Haha, thanks mate. PS no idea about the gull. Maybe seaweed?
Good on you, man, all hand held, very inspirational to keep practising hand held slowish shutter. Great shots
Glad you enjoyed it! Definitely worth exploring the handheld approach if you can. It'll really open up new compositional options and change your workflow.
wow, what a beautiful location
One of Australias best, no doubt!
feeling nostalgic seeing that place. Thanks for the tips and looking forward to more videos like these.
It was also nice and nostalgic for me to go back, after many years. Thanks for viewing :)
Your content is always on point.
Thanks a lot 🙏🏻

Yep, always a fun place that lets you somewhat escape from the nearby busy world. Cheers mate!
Great video Will, not surprising it's you that comes away with a new comp from this epic location.
Thanks legend
What an amazing location. Thank you William for sharing your experience with us.

Beautiful work, mate!

Excellent chase, I got some great pointers from this video. I found you on VERO and I’ve followed you on both sites. Keep up the great work.
You’re a legend Rob, thank you!
Love the video and images! One question for you, how do you stabilize your body to shoot slower shutter speeds you mentioned the images were at?
You need a camera with stabilisation (IBIS), which most mirrorless bodies have. I haven’t used a tripod in years. Most people could get away without using one but it becomes a habit. I prefer not to use one as it frees me up creatively. Cheers.

How do you determine color temperature?
Just by look. You develop an eye for it and what is natural, but it is subjective.
@@WilliamPatinoPhotography Thank You~

Australia looks beautiful but I’m afraid of Bali
No need to go to Bali lol
