They were definitely NOT a romantic thing but he signed her when she was 14 or 15 before he even had an office for his record label, because he was going to let her write her own songs. She really trusted him and thought he saw her as a daughter and the label was really built on her success (even now her master recordings are the most valuable thing about it) she worked her ass off and was the first and most successful artist to come out of there. So when she left the label it was emotional but she had made peace with the situation. Then when he sold her life’s work to someone who he knew she hated she basically went against him publicly, she’s blocking requests to use her old music so they can’t make as much money off of it and now she’ll be re-recording her music which will devalue her masters. Basically she’s haunting him by making his business life hell lol.

Also she left/did not resign with BMR because he wouldn't let her own her future records (her current label lets her own them) AND she asked to be allowed to buy her old music if he sold it but instead he didn't let her and sold it to someone he knew she hated

For people saying it's about her record label, it is, for Taylor Swift. But she wrote this song in a way that it is relatable for many people. So it can be interpreted as a betrayal in a romantic relationship, friendship, relative, etc...

Taylor famously picks her track number 5 as the most emotional in each album. This song can be seen from different points of views and relate to different things. Like a relationship. But she wrote it when her masters where sold by her former label without giving her a warning or chance to acquire them back.

This song is rumored to be about her former label, Big Machine Records, and its former head, the one who discovered her and gave her a record deal when she was just a kid, Scott Borchetta. At first, they parted amicably but it turns out that Scott betrayed her and sold all her masters to Scooter Braun, one of the many people in the industry who has hurt her multiple times. The reason why she left Big Machine Records was because Scott Borchetta wouldn't let her buy her masters, thus she left and made peace with the fact that her 5 albums will be in BMR's hands forever. Lo and behold, after Taylor left, Scott sold BMR to Scooter for $330M.
Her Track 5 in each album are famous for having the most heartwrenching lyrics in her repertoire. This song lyrically pertains to Scott Borchetta and their very public dispute when the shit hit the fan thus the chorus, "I didn't have it in myself to go with grace" coz she went in for the kill in the media when the truth about who bought her masters got out. There are many references about Scott here in this song! :)
Great reaction and I hope you'd react to all her other song from her past albums because she really is one of the best songwriters of her generation.

Yes! The problem was with her previous record label, with Scott Brocheta, he was like a father to Taylor, they had a close relationship, but he sold the record label to Scooter Braun, a man that in the past had a lot of problems with Taylor, with the whole Kim and Kanye situation, so Taylor felt betrayed because now the man that she hates own all her masters and Scott didn’t gave her the choice to bought her songs, so Scotter Braun makes money with Taylor’s old songs. But now i can’t remember if it is in October or November but Taylor can re record her firsts albums 🤔

  • @bawin384

Taylor and Scott (founder of her old label) had a very strong platonic bond. he was with her through every battle she fought (Kanye West thing, dispute with Spotify and Apple Music regarding songwriter rights which led those companies changer their policies. her power omg). But then after he contract expired, he sold the label (along with her masters) to Scooter Braun (someone who industrially bullied her for years, Scott and Taylor have had a lot of convos about him but Scott still did it). Scott was like her father, and he stabbed her in the back. Taylor knew her masters would be sold eventually, but she didn't expect it was going to be sold to someone who tormented her for years. The song metaphorizes this dynamic using a funeral imagery. Taylor is the ghost. Scott is the guy who's at the funeral but actually the reason she's a ghost. he murdered her.

Scott sold all of her masters without her permission to Scooter (someone shes had issues with in the past) this song is about how she was sad about it when it happened but now they are the ones in pain cause shes flourishing. (She plans to rerecord all of her old songs so they have nothing over her anymore) So yes her stolen lullabies are her Masters for all of her old albums.

“my tears ricochet” is about her stolen lullabies and each line was taken from a song from each stolen album!!
“i didn’t have it in myself to go with grace”- Red (State of Grace)
“you’re the hero flying around saving face”- Speak Now (Superman)
“and if I’m dead to you, why are you at the wake?”- rep (LWYMMD/old Taylor is dead)
“cursing my name”- Fearless (The Way I Loved You)
“wishing I stayed”- 1989 (All You Had to Do Was Stay)
“look at how my tears ricochet”- Debut (Teardrops on my Guitar)

No, it wasn't romantic. the head of her former label didn't allow her to sing live her old songs because she left the label to a new one and he and Taylor had a public dispute last year over her masters, where they didn't let Taylor the opportunity to bid on her music in order to buy her masters so she can own them. instead he sold the label to one of Taylor's least favorite person Scooter Braun. and since then Taylor has been VERY VOCAL about how she feels about it. She wrote this song about everything that happened between her and Scott Borchetta (the owner of her previous label, Big Machine Records). While every lyrics relates back to a feeling or moment between them.
"I didn't have it in myself to go with grace" is in regards to all the public blow ups they've had once she found out Scott sold her masters to Scooter Braun. She wasn't prepared to take it silently and went against them publicly.
"Cause when I'd fight, you used to tell me I was brave." Scott was Taylor's biggest cheerleader, having signed her when she was 14 and being one of the first people on his new label. He watched her grow up. He was like family to her.
"Cursing my name, wishing I'd stayed." The contradiction of her knowing that he is publicly throwing punches her way, but deep down he always wanted her to stay with the label but was pissed off when she decided to move so that she could own the masters to her future work (something that he wasn't willing to offer her if she stayed with Big Machine).
"And I still talk to you, when I'm screaming at the sky." A vulnerable lyric, IMO, and I think it shows that while Taylor wishes she could just hate Scott and move on, a part of her was just deeply hurt by the betrayal she felt when he sold her music to her worst enemy.
"You wear the same jewels that I gave you
, as you bury me" - meaning he's proudly have her old music (masters) that she created while he talked down about her in the media during their dispute.
""And I can go anywhere I want
, anywhere I want, just not home" to refer to the time where she looked for new labels to sign to because her old label wouldn't let her buy her music, so it means to say she can go to any label she wants but not home i.e. her old label is the place where she called home and now it's the only place she can't go.
"And when you can't sleep at night, you hear my stolen lullabies." This lyric cemented the idea of it being about Scott, because she feels like he never gave her a real chance to own her music and thus, stole them from her and he should feel guilty about that/it should keep him up at night. I remember in an interview she said that she had many conversations with Scott over the years (sometimes in tears) about her problems with Scooter, but Scott had 330 reasons to forget those problems. (referencing the $330m sale Scott got for selling off his label, 80% of revenue that Taylor accounted for BTW

This is about an ex-lover who broke her heart. She's written dozens of songs to him so, the "stolen lullabys" i.e. the songs she sang for him, to him, about him are the songs that Scott Borchetta stole from her when he maliciously sold her masters to Scooter Braun, her arch nemesis.
