I'm not the biggest TS fan, but the line, 'gain the weight of you then lose it- believe me, i could do it' has popped up in my head over and over the past couple of days since I heard it, and that's about the highest praise I can give a song. great to see reactors giving other genres a chance!
The emotional connection I have with this song because of the first meaning he states is so perfectly illustrated in that line. It can be about a romantic relationship but I can connect with it nevertheless this way in such a heartbreaking yet beautiful way that keeps coming back into my head.
At first thought it was a parent/child, but as it goes on it’s clearly a relationship where she adores this person but he dismisses her and her love for him.
Thats it.In the song she does everything to please to please him ,greeting him at the door, washing all that FANCY SHIT! looking over at his sorry ass hoping he would at least talk to her or give her some kind of attention .At first few listens when she says (i watch you sleeping with your eyes closed and watching you reading with your eyes closed,I ) I thought she was this kinda person who watches people sleep and stares at them all the time and she was one of them weirdos that does that freaky shit! But still it was one of the saddest and beautiful songs by her .And one of my top 5 on the album. Her voice just sounds so beautiful. Shes the master of being able to write a song, knows how the song should sound and know how make the person listening to it feel like there in a mini movie and put yourself or someone in it.Well I better stop now or I could go on and on about Tay Tay!
See I think it also could be parent/child or even platonic. I feel like its about someone who just wants their love and respect for someone reciprocated
For me when I hear this I think about my mom and the NPD abuse I endured growing up. When you have that aha moment about it and realize your relationship for what it truly is…this song is it. This song came out when in therapy with her deciding to go non-contact for my mental health, and Taylor describes this process so perfectly “what would you do if I break free and leave us in ruins? Take this dagger in me and removed, gain the weight of you then lose it. Believe me I could do it. If it’s all in my head tell me now, tell me I’ve got it wrong some how. I know my love should be celebrated, but you tolerate it.” The whole song, the inner child begging for the unconditional love of a mother, but for someone with NPD love is always conditional, they will never see you a person and always an extension of themselves and someone who should always do the most for them, while they “tolerate it” and always expect it and will not reciprocate.
actually it can be seen as both versions i’ve watched A LOT of reactions videos to these and people interpret it differently because it can be literally any relationship. for me it felt more like a friend relationship (probs bc i’m going through stuff with my friend rn but it can be interpreted any way that’s what’s so great about music.
Mike having conditions for putting this song in his playlist is the cutest 😂 “lemme just think twice about if I wanna cry when I hear this song come up on a playlist of mY OWN MAKING”
But beautiful too. This song made me have a tear or two because it so sad and her voice is so sweet and beautiful. Its like its a sad song but also you happy listening to it because no one can write a song or melody like Taylor.
tbh. taylor is best pop artist og this generation and maybe even next. she can continue to be in game till she wants to be. if she will give songs like this.
She's a great songwriter, which means you can apply the song to your life and whatever it means to you. to me, since I've lived it, it's when you adore someone and they barely put up with you....they just tolerate you. It is BRUTAL the way she puts it. Thanks for the reaction.
It's really heartbreaking to be the one that loves the most in the relationship. I feel that's what it's about. One loves so much, and the other one just barely tolerate their existence. The saddest thing.
I initially took this song’s message addressed from one to their lover- the obedience is very telling of how a spouse might have been more subdued/subservient to the partner who had a life outside of home, and from all the other songs of this album, inferences about how this person didn’t deserve the kind of neglect they received from their partner (think of no body, no crime, coney island, ivy,) might have led them to all the possibilities of scenarios where a cheating husband became suspect, or that she herself had an affair she kept from her husband, or that he had things to be sorry for, and so did she. I also took it from a personal perspective. I know what it’s life to feel tolerated as a son, the pressures from norms and expectations. It’s something I struggled to outgrow, so this song is a companion I wish I had while I was in that place in my life, but I’m still glad I have it now. And it’s all this complexity and ambiguity that makes her so masterful as a writer, because the open-ended storytelling allows anyone to step into the shoes of the person the song was written about. It was written for fans, knowing she was celebrated for her pop sound, but she destroyed those boundaries. A lot of young people might not have imagined they would appreciate sounds of old music, and Taylor kind of put that sugar that goes with the cough syrup with the way she weds her style with that which isn’t her own. I was surprised you brought up religion! I see this song so much more broadly now than I used to! Religion kind of feeds on the docility and obedience of the people it seeks to include in its folds. A lot of the time, people replace their purpose with a sense of righteousness, and it’s that detachment to self that really ruins the whole integrity of kindness. Kindness and goodness and righteousness aren’t just impersonal or objective, and shouldn’t just come from an external source. You gave me a lot to ponder with this one, Mike! Another Christmas present!!!
music is universal and i liked how you gave another great interpretation on this song. Depends on what scenario the listener had experience or experiencing right now, it may also be about romantic relationship but would still convey the same meaning. the first interpretation you had would br really heartbreaking 😢😢😢
:O I haven't heard or thought of the religious interpretation before! That's really interesting! Yeah, I can hear how it speaks to a crisis of faith or church hurt.
This is a perfect song but I totally get what you mean about it being almost too sad to listen to. It's like I need a bit if emotional distance before I go in lol
It is about Harry Styles “footnotes in the story of your life” One Direction’s song Story of My Life. I have a theory about what is meant by drawing hearts in the biline. Lay the table with the fancy shit calls back to her song Babe mv by her and Sugarland. Battle hero’s welcome goes with his role in the movie Dunkirk. Painting the portrait is from her video blank space, which is basically about how she knows they are going to be going down in flames. You assume that I’m FINE.. ruins (ocean/ship reference which is always him) He led her on and she left the country basically. He basically was young and dumb and she was his secret on off door mat for years.
except he is younger than her and his songs about her are mostly about him yearning and missing her, begging her to forgive and take him back for his wrong doings
@@daohoang7157 Yup, exactly. One too many times cheating or she found out he had to relationships at the same time. too bad they were cute and seemed to really think theyd end up together.
@@TheLCJ82 He really was young and still has a lot of growing up to do. I hate to compare, but maybe they just weren't meant for each other. Look at Shawn Mendes pining away for Camila for YEARS and when they finally got together they are solid. It comes down to he may love her, but he wasn't committed to her or their timing was too soon.
@@daohoang7157 i know! shawn is extremely mature! I love how in love with her he is - so sweet! But Harry always was a player. i dont think it is ironic. She has always liked that and also i feel like it started as her revenge - i keep him foreva like a vendetta-ta
