I think it was because he was focus on so many things at the same time while reacting(cause actually it’s a brilliant song ) so I’m sure if the reaction was just about the lyrics he would be more deep into the song emotions and energy it brings to the listener (us :,( ) and he would cry like us :))
...and you passed right over probably the the best lyric in the song... "now I'm begging for footnotes in the story of your life" ... that is such a painful line.
It’s hard to pick up on everything in Taylor’s songs on the first listen. Derrik does such a fantastic job in doing it, though! He gets at least 90% of it for the most part! Let’s bump it to 95% just because I adore his dimples when he smiles or giggles. 😂 I still need a few listens before I get everything, too!
The imagery of “took this dagger in me & removed it, gained the weight of you & lose it” is heartbreakingly relatable. Then the kicker “believe me I could do it” is like she’s trying to convince herself that she could leave him. 😭
literally 5 am right now. Pulled an all nighter for studying Calculus and I am finally done. Just got the notif and it seems like the universe gave a gift to me lol. Also, the lyric, "Use my best colors for your portrait" is quite overlooked, but it is one of my favourite lines. Using the best words you can muster up to describe your partner and making it seem like they're the best person ever is something that I think a lot of people relate to. And making portraits isn't easy, so it is kind of a nod to how the lies are difficult to utter. Also the fact that the build up in the bridge makes it seem like she finally leaves, but then the line, "I sit and watch you" hits, and the music fading abruptly is such a phenomenal musical choice. You realise she doesn't leave. She tolerates it. I dunno man. I love this song.
The ending hurts the most. I also tolerated it for a while and it was always like that. You think about breaking free and it's great but somehow you stay and it just breaks you a then you just think you can't leave then like you literally are not capable of doing that (no idea why tho :D). When I think about it I have no idea how I finally left, what changed to give me the strength.
For me, "Happiness" from the evermore album is the most heart-breaking and beautifully composed song from either folklore or evermore. I haven't been through a breakup from a really long-term relationship like she's talking about in the song, but somehow I feel every word.
Tolerate it is one of my favs from this album. One of her best track 5's in awhile in my opinion. Evermore, the song is very good too. has a sense of vulnerability in it and then changes to the realization of i'm going to make it through this. and bon iver's voice sounds so good in it.
I read an interpretation of this song once that described it as not being about a romantic relationship but about a relationship with a parent 🥺 I’ve never looked at this song the same way since. It makes so much more sense. It feels to me like this was Taylor’s song to her Dad, especially after watching the Miss Americana Netflix documentary. She just always wanted to make him proud. I think so many of us can relate to that sentiment
On one of my long sunset walks this song was in my mind on repeat (as are most, if not all of her songs). I was going through a very hard time with my daughter (again) & it struck me, (as in clobbered me over the head struck me) that this described my relationship with her, but with me the one “polishing the plates until they gleam & glisten” while she tolerates it. So why aren’t I the older & wiser one, lol?
Deborah Russell nope. It isn't what the song is about at all. There are definite references to romantic elements of a relationship that would be seriously problematic in a parent/child scenario. And Taylor and her father had one difference of opinion in that documentary. Their relationship clearly isn't like this. Don't know where you got that from.
Not sure if you noticed or caught it, but this song is in 5/4. It’s amazing how well it flows for being in an odd time signature. Just goes to show you the amazing writing between Taylor and Aaron.
I played this for my son earlier today for him to nail the time signature and he had it in 2 measures. He’s a percussionist, who has recent experience with 5/4, so I knew he’d get it. But he was captivated by the whole package of the song and said he would likely be analyzing it for weeks. He’s 16. Not generally moved by lyrical music. But, it’s Taylor Swift, so… I’m not surprised she got him.
I love this reaction and the way that you talk about her songwriting and how she builds the song. I would love to see a video where you explain some song writing techniques
Jack Antonoff did a cover/mashup of this is me trying with his song 45, it's an amazing performance you should do a guitar tutorial/reaction to it next
I remember hearing about the Nashville numbering system a long time ago. Thanks for reminding me again, just googled it and it was very helpful :) Loved your breakdown of the song.
have you noticed the odd 5/4 time scale? i think this is the first song where she plays around with that sort of sophistication.. that's why this song is even more effective, because musically it never makes you "comfortable" listening to easy beats.. not that i know much about music theory/technicality tho loool i only notice that this is not in 4/4 😂
i love listening to your song breakdowns! so insightful, i know nothing about songwriting technicalities so it's really interesting. thank you for the video! (i would like you to react to "right where you left me" it's one of my favourites)
You nail the lyrics with the alliteration along with the build of the cadence on the bridge. Thank you for your your true gift of your ear, to just catch the chords in the first few moments, and YES to the Nashville Numbers! (Again.. another film set with some cool peeps, late nights, listening to You and your reactions and music.) Cheers to yours and the pup. - Kate
Love this song and great reaction as per usual. My favorite line is “Now I’m begging for footnotes in the story of your life” in the bridge. You paused right after it to make a comment, so I’m not sure if you noticed it lol
I would so watch a video about her songwriting technique. I really love that about her and how she's able to transport so many emotions through her voice. She get me with nearly every new song and I always think HOW?? xD Great reaction and I hope your Evermore ranking with me on RUclips as well.
I thought I saw somewhere that Taylor said she wrote Tolerate It after she had read the book Rebecca and that it was at least partially based on how she imaged the second wife felt existing in the shadow of the rich dude’s first wife.
Fantastic Taylor reaction, yet again. Can’t wait for the ‘Tis The Damn Season blind play through! As for what I think you should listen to next?...... evermore & folklore are flawless albums, don’t get me wrong, I listen to them both every single day still lol but Derrik, you NEEEEEED to listen to Taylor’s acoustic performance of Eyes Open from 2013. She wrote the song for the Hunger Games soundtrack. You’ll dig it. I bet you’ll love playing it on guitar too. I’ll link ya, ya know just in case you decide to react to it. 🤷🏼♂️ Haha. Swifties, band together and like this comment so he’ll react to Eyes Open! lol There’s the version you need to hear! ⬇️ m.ruclips.net/video/6zUFT6B9Zr0/видео.html
Hey Derrik, ive been watching your videos constantly this passed week and loving it! Could you make a video on the stages you took to learn the guitar ie. chords then scales? or was it fingerpicking and chords. how you trained your ear. what sort of practice routine would you recommend. that sort of thing as for me (and i think i speak for many) are stuck on how to improve and progress. keep up the amazing work bro thanks
Your reactions are always so pleasant and insightful to watch Would love to see a video of you breaking down her song writing! You should react to "right where you left me" next it's a great song 😊
There is a common idea that when you are in a happy romantic relationship, couples will often pick up a bit of weight. So one interpretation is that she gains this happy love weight and then when the relationship goes badly and ends, she will lose that weight. On a metaphorical level she clearly is completely consumed by this person and takes on all of their emotions, behaviour, interests as being equally, if not more important, to her own. I think in both ways, losing that 'weight" of the lover could be both a relief and painful.
I though you are already so mature, mabye because of your beard and mustache. Now I think that you are so young. The way your eyes look though, looking so young and also the way you talk. Just sharing 😃
Hiiii! Can you do Begin Again and Ours from Taylor Swift live on Harvey Mudd college???? Ive been looking for tutorials and nothing sounds as good as yours so... pleaseeeee ❤️

Oh boy why starting off with a track 5 from tay? I didn't plan on crying today
How you listened to this song without crying, wow. I admire it 😂 cause this song turned me into a mess
I agree HOW ?
I think it was because he was focus on so many things at the same time while reacting(cause actually it’s a brilliant song ) so I’m sure if the reaction was just about the lyrics he would be more deep into the song emotions and energy it brings to the listener (us :,( ) and he would cry like us :))
Not to many songs make me cry but this one got me.Also Marjorie.
I cry every time I listen to it. Especially since it's inspired by Princess Di. Heart wrenching.
@@tammyhay1437 omg Marjorie 😞😞
...and you passed right over probably the the best lyric in the song... "now I'm begging for footnotes in the story of your life" ... that is such a painful line.
Yes, absolutely
aahh that's a good one! Can't pick up everything on first listen!
Totally agreed. Amazing deep line.
It’s hard to pick up on everything in Taylor’s songs on the first listen. Derrik does such a fantastic job in doing it, though! He gets at least 90% of it for the most part! Let’s bump it to 95% just because I adore his dimples when he smiles or giggles. 😂

the songrwriting on this song is *chef's kiss*
Dude, this is a classic Taylor Swift tract 5
If you like this song, I think you might love illicit affairs off her Folklore album
ivy seems like a pretty great choic too.
yes pleaseeee. Every lyric line got me.
And also This Is Me Trying
Yes ....
I never thought a song would make me cry every single time I’d listen to it

this song hurts so bad when you relate it to a parent/child relationship. it kills me.
yeah. I have that with my dad and also had it with my ex...that song destroyed me on first listen.
So true.
The fist time I heard it that's the first thing I thought. It's literally so painful
Wow, I never noticed this could be a parent/child relationship 😳
Oh my god, this just made me cry my eyes out! How.. That's what it is..
Tolerate it is one of my favs from this album. One of her best track 5's in awhile in my opinion. Evermore, the song is very good too. has a sense of vulnerability in it and then changes to the realization of i'm going to make it through this. and bon iver's voice sounds so good in it.

I'm tired of people saying it's about a romantic relationship, or child/parend. It's about whatever the listener relates/resonates to.
I don't think Tolerate it is about Taylor's Dad they have a every close relationship
Not sure if you noticed or caught it, but this song is in 5/4. It’s amazing how well it flows for being in an odd time signature. Just goes to show you the amazing writing between Taylor and Aaron.

I cried when I first heard this. When she gets to the bridge ugh! Always love your reactions man!
this is literally the saddest song ever

Please react to "Ivy", its my favourite off Evermore!!
Ivy is my favorite, too! It’s incredibly underrated I think on the album.

I recently came to know that this song was written about the protagonist from the book Rebecca, by Daphne Du Maurier.

I feel like she didn't realize the power of her breathy voice till maybe 1989? If it's all in my head, tell me now.
Lol. I think you’re right.
Wow your comment on the songwriting with all the actions is fascinating!! Thanks so much for sharing your expertise here, I appreciate it so much!
Thanks for listening!
Josh coming out makes sense so much for the lyrics in 'Hope Ur OK'! Now it makes sense as an album ender.
yess my new favorite Track 5 of hers, after ATW held that title for 8 years straight 😢
I’m always disappointed when reactions don’t refer to the time signature. I find it so captivating in this song.
This song you can relate to anyone who is in toxic relationships 😢wow I cried to the song
Love this song and great reaction as per usual. My favorite line is “Now I’m begging for footnotes in the story of your life” in the bridge. You paused right after it to make a comment, so I’m not sure if you noticed it lol
