That's so true, I think many people miss the fact that she's not trying to be the most powerful singer on earth, she likes to remain in her confortable range. Instead the true joy of her music comes from her songwriters.

The true crime is Taylor’s best work is typically not what they play on the radio. She is an incredible storyteller and lyrical genius. Most of her singles are her catchy glitter gel pen songs, not her deep, heartbreaking songs. Also, her producer Jack Antonoff is a master in his own right. They like to experiment together and that’s why she has so much variety as far as genres/sounds.

What is badass is that she didn’t buy back her music, she RE-RECORDED every single album and stamped them as “Taylor’s Version “, had all of the radio stations only play her versions AND her followers gladly purchased her new albums along with people like me who are new SWIFTIES because of her newer albums. Her songwriting is genius and her work ethic is beyond measurable.

42 yo male who was in similar shoes as the op. My wife is a full-on swiftie and I just "liked" her radio songs. When newer stuff like Willow made it to the radio I was pleasantly surprised, but didn't go deeper than that.
The Eras tour started up and my wife wanted to go, I pulled some strings and got 2 tickets in Seattle. She requested I go with her and gave me "homework" on Lover-Midnights. I instantly saw the differences between what I knew and the reality of who Taylor actually was. I immediately liked the non-radio stuff on 1st listen, becoming actually excited to see if the hype matched the concert.
The concert was an incredible performance. Honestly, that was the best concert I've ever been to, and I've been to about 150 in my life. Since the July concert, I have listened to her music consistently and consider myself a newforever Swiftie. Her talent is beyond comparison.

The thing about Taylor Swift is, she's not at all about her singles. She typically picks the catchiest songs with high replay values as singles because she's a smart businesswoman and is aware that such a decision will bring loads of commercial success.
Of course, this leads to many people thinking that she only writes songs like Shake It Off, so it's a double-edged sword

i dont think its a double edged sword. people usually expect the first single/the A side/the first song of the album that got an MV to be a best one. so people will tend to be reluctant to purchase /listen the album since the rest are likely to be mediocre. but Taylor just flipped it of. “if you think this single is pretty good, you should listen to the rest, its even better”. + people nowadays wont be able to escape her musics anyway, people will hear it somewhere, those “undiscovered songs” somehow sometimes somewhere. 😂

I am 83 years old, I shouldn't be a Taylor Swift fan. Not that long ago, I started thinking, OK, I've heard so much about this Taylor Swift, let's have a listen. Now I am a Swiftie and proud of it. I am absolutely blown away by the girl. Well, woman. She's got BRAINS, too, people, she can in fact sing and has amazing vocal control. No two songs are alike, really. But what comes through more than anything else, is Taylor's innate EMPATHY. I listen to a song like Ronan and she's got me bawling my eyes out. I understand she basically writes most of her songs herself, and there seems no doubt that the songwriting is one of her basic strengths. Every song tells a story, has a message, she has a lot so say and it's the music that lets her say it.

When you realize that she is possibly neurodivergent (her brain is wired completely different from normal people) it makes sense why she is the way she is like all her boyfriends who have completely misunderstood her because her brain is different and stuff like the way she celebrates or reacts is "not normal" like her "happy dancing/happy hands" which could come off as awkward and her very shocked faces at awards ceremonies which people tease/joke about to her face all the time. Also she is obsessed with things like the number 13 and cats. When you realize that she is possibly a neurodivergent savant it all kind of clicks for you regarding why Taylor Swift is Taylor Swift and why she can come up with amazing and unique lyrics and melodies.
She says that the way she tolerates pain is to simply write a song about it. It comes from her whole childhood when she was ostracized at the lunch table and nobody ever invited her to a party or sleepover as a child. She wrote songs to tolerate and cope with the pain. When she grew up she simply wrote songs about the new group of people who did the same to her (exes and groups of other people who were horrible and mean to her).

ALL of them. She started in country, went into pop, dabbed lightly with rock, got into folk, etc. Her body of work is super super varied and should not be judged based on singles. Exactly. And Radio Stations all seem to have promised that once she drops her “Taylor’s Version” [TV] re-released albums, they will ditch the Scooter-Braun-owned versions and *only* play Taylor’s Versions. I love that. It’s like the entire music industry revolted against the Patriarchy, and if someone who owns an artist’s music library plans to sell it, they had better offer it to the Artist themselves first, give them the Right of First Refusal, or suffer the wrath of everyone in the music biz who can make his life miserable (I hope). That ought to be a law, musical artists don’t have enough (any?) protections under the law. Only the slimy record producers have control. That must end.

    • @allih8021
      @allih8021 Год назад

Came here to say this. @LegalEagle has a great video (that also features Rick Beato) that explains the whole thing. Essentially there are 2 types of copyright law at play - the copyright for the song as written (music & lyrics) and the copyright of the master recordings of those songs. TS owned the rights to the songs as written compositions but not to her masters, which we all now know her former manager sold to Scooter Braun. So because she's wealthy beyond belief and has a lot of power and clout in the music industry, and because she owns the rights to the songs themselves, she had the means to essentially just go re-record and re-release all of that music.
New artists generally lack the means and money to pay to have their songs recorded and distributed which is why the managers/producers/record labels often own the master recordings - because they pay for all that stuff. It's how they make money after investing in a new artist and why owning masters for a famous musician has traditionally been a very lucrative investment. Taylor has completely upended that. Now that she's re-recorded those songs, anyone with two working brain cells is going to pay for and use the "Taylor's Version" so they don't piss her off. Which means with every recording she is further devaluing those original masters. It's kind of beautiful. KARMA INDEED.
You should check out the video - it's well worth the watch: ruclips.net/video/M-A_RrOeoWw/видео.html&pp=ygULbGVnYWwgZWFnbGU%3D

I know what you mean, cause there's obvious unhappiness in being in a marriage and being in love with someone that is not your husband, but still, I don't find it that much sad because she does not only talk about the pain of being in that marriage, she also talks about the love she has for this person and how now she's covered in it, so it is not completely dark, there's also light in it, it's bittersweet. And also, the melody and the energy in this song make you feel like it's not as heavy as it is, they make it lighter. As for seven, yeah, you're right, I'm guilty, this is a heartbreaking song, but I just find it so hauntingly beautiful that I had to put it there just cause I feel like any person with a decent taste would hear the beauty in the melody and her voice and love it even if they're not so much into sad songs. Plus, there's also so much innocent and nostalgic imagery in it, happy memories of childhood that are mixed with the not so happy ones, that I feel like it's not all just sad.

Like what the comments had already said, she’s always been a great storyteller. Her popular hits don’t really show that side of her because well, they have to be catchy and surface-level.
Her storytelling is what drew me into her, and I’m glad more people are realizing that she’s not just a “I write catchy and childish break up songs about my exes!” kind of singer. She’s an artist

You NEED to listen to these necessities:
    - All too well (Taylor’s version, and preferably 10 min version)
    - Cruel summer
    - Cardigan
    - You’re on your own kid
    - Enchanted (Taylor’s version)
    - Better than revenge (Taylor’s version)
    - Clean (Taylor’s version)
    - This love (Taylor’s version)
    - Is it over now? (Taylor’s version)
    - now that we don’t talk (Taylor’s version)
    - Look what you made me do
    - Delicate
    - …ready for it?
    - Don’t blame me
    - King of my heart
    - I did something bad
    - Dress
    - call it what you want
    - Lover
    - No body no crime
    - Would’ve could’ve should’ve
    - high infidelity
Adding some requested ones and other ones I forgot to add:
    - daylight
    - afterglow
    - the lakes
    - marjorie
    - You’re losing me
    - wildest dreams
    - right where you left me

Honestly she has like 250 songs in her catalogue, 6 songs isn’t nearly enough to understand, let alone appreciate, her music. She’s so diverse, and writes all her music.
To get a handle on her huge musical diversity, I would also recommend these songs (TV means Taylor’s version / the re-record): no body no crime, right where you left me, the last great American dynasty, Would’ve Could’ve Should’ve, You’re Losing Me, All Too Well (10 min version), Forever Winter, Cardigan, You’re on your own kid, getaway car, End Game (Ft. Future & Ed Sheeran), “Slut!”, Clean (TV), Castles Crumbling (ft. Hayley Williams), Haunted, Is it Over Now?, That’s When (Ft. Keith Urban), Vigilante Shit, The Great War, Girl at Home (TV) Daylight, Mad Woman, and Call it What You Want
In no particular order. I’m sure you won’t like all of them, but just trying to show her range, she’s done a bit of everything! And Taylor swift reactions seem to get loads of views so that doesn’t hurt 😂

Taylor has been writing like this from near day one. Even shake it off is a big middle finger to the critics that talk about her “bad” dancing. She’s encouraging herself and her fans to shake off the opinions of others. Encouraging her fans to try new things and do the things that bring them joy even if you can’t be the best at it. Yes, it was ridiculously over played, but the larger problem is that people don’t listen to her or take her seriously when she speaks about her art.

Speaking as a Swiftie, please for the love of fuck let's all be normal about this reaction/reactor. People are allowed to dislike/like what they've listened to, and everyone has different tastes in music. We don't need to shove all of Taylor's lore down his throat so he can "get" her music better. This girl has always been a storyteller. Even when you look back to her first big hit Tim McGraw, she paints an entire picture for the audience. I've been a peripheral fan since then. Like you, I've never been inthralled with some of her pop hits like Shake it Off but others are bangers. What I love is the raw storytelling from a young woman's perspective. It has always been what she wanted to write about. I don't think the majority of her songs were put on for the label, maybe some of the ones for radio play. There is nobody telling stories of love and loss quite like her. I listen to music to feel things and she always gets to me cuz I relate to so much of what she's writing about.
