You're my hero, I got a sim racing rig and just thought of this because i was on Facebook market place and was staring at a post for a minute before i realised i was looking at a rc ford bronco. I'm already on ebay looking for my sacrificial wheel and car
This is by far the easiest way to do this. No arduino bs just a few solder joints and you're up and running. I'm making one like a buddy box that I can plug into my transmitter.
Hello! I just wanted to replace the broken pots on an old wheel, but I don't know how to reconnect them. You show a really nice close up at 7:40. What's the logic in that conection? What cables do you know to link and what cables should connect to the pins? Sorry if it's super out topic bit I can't find a lot of info online Cheers!
My wiring shown is modified to work for RC car and wire colors have been switched around. I am not sure if that helps, I can't say I remember the original wiring
This would be great with a rc plane fpv gimbal and a head tracker in the fatshark goggles I think I might give this a go I have a lot of spares from my freestyle qwads.
@@LightningIguana Sadly, not yet. I have been looking harder at POV equipment, but haven't pulled the trigger yet. I have had a number of higher priority RC projects that I have been working on.
Thank you for detailed tutorial Sir! I have a quitestion regarding to potenceometers, are they all have similar signal? Is it possible that potenceometer from steering wheel won't fit to transmitter?
Thanks! I believe the steering wheel is a 10k pot and if the plug doesn't fit on another style transmitter then you would have to hard wire the signal. It should still be three wires. The middle wire is always the same, the two outside wires can be swapped if steering is reversed. I hope that helps you...
@@oscarmeyerfpv2155 I'm inspired by your experience. Going to buy used steering wheel and try somthing similar with my WLtoys car. Let you know about results.
Thanks! You are correct that they can be swapped. The concept with this wiring configuration is combining two potentiometers to act as one in place of the original transmitter single pot. If the total span is 0-10K ohms, then 5K becomes zero speed. If after wiring the pedals you discover they are reversed, you can simply swap the two outside wires going to transmitter from pedals. Hope that helps.
Hello! How would you do this with ExpressLRS? Like I only have 1 controller and cant sacrifice it to make this. but would it be possible to solder a receiver instead?
Man surfing eBay and I saw a mod like this and thought "holy flipping flapjacks and Skittles." I have 3 old wheels from PS2 to USB and a ton of tx and matching tx, even a diy one from Amazon. I am asking and assuming at the same time here, since all insides of steering wheel and pedals are pretty much removed would this be able to be any wheel that uses pots for the inputs?
I followed your tutorial and got the steering to work great, but both of my pedals will move the rc forward. And both potentiometers need to be at a certain position in tandem for it to work. My transmitter also does not have a throttle trim. Any advice?
Did your pots match already? I thought about doing this a long time ago. All my transmitters use 5k and my wheel uses 10k. Wired like that it is super erratic. Soldered 10k rez on the pots to get to 5k way better but still fidigety. Any ideas?
Yea I just used the two existing 5k pots on foot pedal but rewired them to that series parallel circuit and made the total closer to 10k. It could be one bad pot if it is erratic. Would have to test wipe with an ohm meter to know for sure.
Please tell me you still read comments 🙏 I’ve attempted to do this 2 times now and seem to have lost hope in completion. Would you consider a build & shipment 🚚 📦 x2 pcs?
I love the idea! In theory yes it could work since the controller has potentiometers for the joysticks and triggers. The only problem would be the size of the RC car transmitter component board for integration into controller. If you made it an add on the controller with some 3D printed part I could see it being possible.
@@oscarmeyerfpv2155 Question for you. I'm doing the steering wheel mod now. In the diagram, you have the red wire in the middle from the potentiometer to the transmitter, but you have black in the middle on the potentiometer. Why is that?
@@oscarmeyerfpv2155 Got it (mostly) working! When I press the pedals the car's motor makes a little noise, but not enough to turn the wheels. Any suggestions? Steering works great.
@@trishabelly4194 the transmitter has trim pots that you can adjust that should increase the throttle, but if that doesn't help it could be the resistance in the foot pedal circuit due to bad potentiometer or wiring.

Do you think you might be able to sync up that motor for the steering wheel with the steering servo of the car to simulate the return to center?
