We now know the resistance of the potentiometers SHOULDN'T have mattered. They're used as voltage dividers, so even if the resistance is different, it should have worked fine. However, while testing, when using the stock pedal's pots, we'd either have 100% or 0 throttle and nothing in between - hence why we tried to use matching pots.
As this is just a proof of concept, basically just to figure out if this is as cool as we imagined (and it is), we just needed the car to accelerate and brake in a controllable manner. The rest will be figured out for the actual final build. :D

How did you screw up copy and pasting a link into the description??
It should be an RC Fire Truck, I mean it's your most viewed video....
This comment needs to be seen by them. Sadly judging by how far back the Twitter post about it was (few weeks ago), this is probably quite a late video, with everything already done.

I'm genuinely impressed that they managed to wrap it up in one part
Emre Sağır i was thinking the same thing lmao
I'm not, it looks like they did a ton of research ahead of time and found some good guides from people that already trial and error'd this. If they did this from scratch with only a rough idea of what they wanted to do they would have taken much longer.

Except there's no rocket thrusters that makes the car fly. We're gonna need a little help from Elon there.

Exactly!
I have a ton of experience with the traxxas cars. Even at the speeds you are traveling it's easy to break the caster block in the front suspension. A broken part would be a huge buzzkill to an otherwise very cool project at LTX. I Highly recommend some aluminum caster blocks to stop a potential tragedy at the show.
Traxxas part number : TRA3632a
You can also change the top speed of the cars by changing the pinion gear on the motor. Smaller pinion (less teeth) = Less speed.

I had an idea for almost this exact same set up back in 2014 when I was in high school, so I was VERY interested to see how LTT made a project like this possible. That's great you got it working and that there are other people who have tried this too, as I would really like to try this on. Hearing the problems and challenges you guys had to work through also helps me know what to look out for when doing something like this myself.
Thanks for what you guys do, this is amazing and has helped me so much.
Nice one! I've always thought VR would be great for RC (Full size RC, how mad would that be!) and you guys have gone an actually done it, bravo!!!
"You didn't pay for this!"
"Neither did you!"
"Yes I di... well, Linus Media Group Inc did..."
10/10 quotes
"who's that"
Yeah, this is the only criticism I can basically come up with for Linus. He mentions the "I pay for the stuff" way too much in his videos. However I think he should realize that it's the combined effort that pays for stuff, even though maybe it's still his signature on the checks.
I have run into this behaviour before in some psycho who thought he was god until he landed in jail due to st00pidity.
ku
Josh Bardwell made it into a Linus video! Some of us have been doing this stuff for years so I wanted to point out that the DJI FPV stuff is incredibly expensive, as much as 10X the price of stuff we normally use. It also has a lot more latency and is far too slow for racing drones. It is also much bigger, heavier, and overheats more. But yes, FPV rc cars are a lot of fun. Flying with FPV is so much better though that I hardly touch my cars any more.
I hardly game any more since I got into FPV years ago
DJI OcuSync might be expensive, heavy and relatively high latency, but it provides an HD link! And in the case of RC car racing, i would argue that this is potentially a good trade-off. Latency is low enough, weight doesnt really matter and if the price can be paid...why not?
Most visitors at LTX probably have no clue about FPV systems and would be disappointed with standard quality.
Oh dear god. Hopefully linus doesn't discover and make fpv mainstream.... A bunch of people will flood the scene and more rules will make it impossible to fly!!!
Edit: people keep correcting me and I should have said "more mainstream that it already is"
Im just worried that since linus's audience is mostly younger kids, people are gonna start doing more dumb stuff and we will be forced to stay on AMA fields.
@@Christheawsome3 Lol as if fpv wasn't mainstream yet. Or at least "drones" in general (which always have some sort of video downlink so can be considered fpv.) 4-5 years ago when the racing scene started out that was an edgy little niche in RC sports but now? You should do this with the Arctic hobby land rider 503 rc firetruck
One of their best projects I've ever seen.
This is amazing. Need a walk through on how to recreate this. How much did it cost in total?
You can get it much cheaper (and at a similar quality) than what they did. This is what you need for the FPV part:
Camera: Eachine TX02 (or similar) for ~$18
Goggles: Eachine VR D2 Pro for ~$80, or Eachine VR006 for ~$40
Then get any RC car you want. The AIO camera mentioned is actually made for micro drones so it is tiny, has a range of a few hundred meters, works fine indoors, needs no cooling and doesn't use much power.
Now just imagine their reaction with a racing quad and that sick fpv setup
As long as they don't use any shit from DJI I'll be happy. Fuck a pair of HDO's are probably cheaper than that shit DJI goggle or they could get a pair of skyzones or the like that do 3D that would have been sick on the ground vehicle maybe add head tracking and they wouldn't even believe it if they were impressed by this. Hell they were impressed with 50ms+ latency I couldn't even imagine trying to use that to fly.

Yes, jumping an RC in FPV goggles is killer. I did a setup on a Traxxas Summit - very cool.
I did something like this in the late '90s. The resolution wasn't as good, I used the standard dual stick RC controller, and it would display to a TV (through VCR first so I could record my driving), but it's still basically the same thing.
What I was really hoping for here, since you showed a VR headset, was that you had used 2 cameras thereby giving a stereoscopic (3D) driving experience.

The last time I measured the resistance of a component with the rest of the circuit attached, I failed a pratical exam in college... RIP me.
Yeah, I can see why it would be a bad idea.
Yeah... that's like one of the first things you learn you've done wrong in any introductory circuits course. They probably should have gotten help on this project from someone who understands at least some electrical engineering
@@alzhn In this case since the voltage sense pin (to which the pod is connected) will probably be High-Z so it doesn't matter for strict resistance measurements. Especially not for "close enough" measurements like this.
@@EraYaN yeah it's true, I'm not saying they did it wrong, clearly it was enough, I was just sharing my sad story ahahah
@@EraYaN I mean, the steering and throttle pots would probably be in parallel in the original controller if they're used as a voltage divider, meaning you'd measure half the resistance if they were the same...
Come to think of it, that could be why the throttle response is so bad here - the steering wheel and pedal are separated

@Michael Taylor, The difference is that there is no altitude or position hold, return to home, or even auto level (depending on the mode you are in).
