Yeap. My 20 year old son called me a few months back or so, to say his manual Caldina has crap acceleration with his foot flat. I diagnosed the "issue" from 360km away, over a phone call. "Go out and check your damn mats". I used to own the car, so I knew right away what was up. "Problem" resolved.
I did that once when I was a kid, or at least an adolescent. Filled up at a gas station, hopped back in and pushed the mat on top of the pedal. When I cranked it, it instantly red-lined. Scared me that I shut it off out of instinct. Took me a few seconds to calm down and "diagnose" the pedal.
Love your channel. I worked in auto repair for eight years in Chicago. Never did I see the kind of filth and infestations that I occasionally see on your channel. If I did, I would refuse to service such vehicles.
But did you ever see rust like that car in Quebec? LOL. Chicago climate not that far off of Montreal, where they used to use so much road salt most cars would turn into rust buckets in short order. I had a 76 Impala in the 90s there. It was only still roadworthy as GM used a ton of steel in the frames back then so under the rust there was enough strength, it made it through grad school!
I have a fun story about a car repair (Note: The problem will just be 'the radiator', as I forget *exactly* what it was, but it was an quick, easy, & cheap fix): When I was 4 years old (I'm 39 now. Be 40 come April), my mother was driving to New Hampshire, and white smoke started coming from under the hood, and overheat warnings came on. Mom pulls over, pops the hood, and already knows what the problem is (She believed in knowing her car inside & out). Tow truck comes, sees this single mother with a 4 year old son and a 7 year old daughter, and starts blabbering nonsense and playing up how screwed her car is. Mom (Calmly): It's the radiator. I know what white smoke means. Towtruck: Well, it could be- Mom: It's the radiator. Towtruck (Nonplussed): We'll see what the garage says. We get it towed to the nearby garage, and the mechanic takes it in and 'looks it over' while mom is up front making calls to friends. Comes back with a laundry list of 'problems' that would have cost more than $7,000 to fix. In 1988. Mom (Still calm): It's the radiator. I had the car looked at not a month back. (Note: A friend of mom's owned a garage back then, and would do checkups at reasonable prices. He took pride in his work, and would *never* skimp on work. He actually paid mom the repair fee when he learned what happened, as it was something he missed during his inspection. She did not mention this man to the mechanic) Mechanic: Well, they did a bad job! Probably lazy, eh? So many garages scam people! But if you'd sign the work order- Mom (Now using the 'I know you're lying, and I will give you this *one* chance to be honest' tone): I know what the problem is. And all I will pay for is the radiator. How about we inspect the car together? Mechanic: You can't be in the garage! It's dangerous! People running around, tools and cars everywhere! It's a liability issue! Mom: Then you can either fix the real problem, and *I'll* inspect the car afterwards, or you can tow it to in Greenfield. They fixed the real issue, and mom had the car inspected by her friend again a few days later. Turned out; They had created 99% of the problems they listed (Surprise, surprise! The 1% is the real issue) and never fixed them, so mom had her friend fix the issues, and she sent the New Hampshire garage the bill, along with a letter from my mother that said, and I'm paraphrasing: I know you caused every issue listed on this enclosed repair order in order to cheat me. Also enclosed is the inspection from less than 25 days prior, which found none of these issues. You can either pay, or I can take you to court for vandalizing my car. From how I heard the story told; They fought at first, but settled when mom lawyered up. Their whole attitude, from what I can vaguely remember looking back now, was 'Woman stupid. Woman can't know cars! Cars are for *men*!' And they picked the wrong woman to try that BS on. 😂
Sadly, this is part of the reason some of these people "declined repairs" on this channel. There are some many shady mechanics that people's knee jerk reaction when told of problems they didn't know about/don't understand is that the mechanic is lying! I am so blessed that my best friend is a mechanic. 26 years and 370,000 miles later, my Civic is still running in good shape thanks to his knowledge and honesty (and he's not just honest with me as a friend, he is honest with ALL his clients!)
Good for her. I haven't had anyone try to scam me THAT bad for being female, but I have (when it was still reasonably safely driveable) driven away when I didn't like the answer (from a shop that was conveniently close, and drove immediately to a shop I trust). My brother had a car crap out on a trip 400 km from home, got towed to a local shop and they told him his timing belt went and took out his engine, so he had it towed back home to our regular mechanic and had the timing belt replaced for a hundred bucks (somehow it had slipped a notch or two so the engine wouldn't run but it also wasn't enough to cause interference between the pistons and valves like the first garage claimed. And I've had dealerships quote me a thousand bucks more for a repair that my mechanic got done for a couple hundred. I'm just lucky I know my way around cars and will make them explain everything. And I insist on being allowed in the shop to see what they're talking about.
had something that could have ended similarly happen to me and my dad except the mechanic let us into the shop to show us what the issue was. It was that somehow a part of tubing in the cooling system got dislodged and fell out from an accident that happened earlier that day or the night before -it was a noticeable gap-, the fact we had had to fill the system up already due to this, and the car overheated meant the engine was gone -drove at least 200 miles with this issue cross-country road trip. Given it was a small town shop and we were about a hundred from miles home we got picked up by mom the next day and it all worked out dad still drives the same car 15 years later. The mechanic was surprised that the tubing came out as that is not something he had seen before.

What's *really* scary is ppl driving around in vehicles with suspensions unattached to the vehicle & flat t(y)res & not knowing what's causing it to "be all over the road". These ppl are playing russian roulette with innocent people's lives. Why doesn't USA have mandatory safety checks for vehicles? OK, I know that each State has its own rules & that 19 of 50 States *do* have some form of check, but some of them are vehicle identity only, not safety checks. Most of us have no idea what sort of rust buckets, and rolling junk heaps we are sharing the road with. A lot of these clips bring back for me memories of management decisions at my former employer (I'm retired) of letting million-dollar machines practically fall apart, resulting in repairs that took three to five times longer, and ten times the cost. That was funny when you said where that person lives has strict rules. Up here in Canada, we don't consider them strict, just common sense. It is illegal to drive a vehicle that is unfit for the road and shops are required to report a driver, or can even refuse to give the car back to a customer who wants to drive the car away. There was a lady here in my city a few years ago that got into a major accident and she was charged with negligence causing death because she did not maintain her brakes. Just because you can drive a piece of junk doesn't mean you should drive it. There are other people on the road.
I can understand putting window washer fluid in the brake lines and coolant. It's prettier and cheaper and non-toxic. Makes it safe for the children to play in the engine compartment.
>Engine is 5 minutes away from exploding into metal shrapnel >Entire chassis is in detached parts and holding up by tensegrity alone >Ventilation system sprays gasoline and exhaust fumes directly at the driver >Customer declined repairs
Well if the shop charges you arm and leg what would you do? Just agree to whatever they want to charge you? Most people expect problem to be an easy fix not a major financial investment.
thats exactly WHY you would decline repairs. there arent any cars out there that would still be worth repairing in that condition, all they comment on most of these is declined repairs, that doesn't necessarily mean they planned on driving it or if they do they probably dont intend to go farther than absolutely necessary edit: theres also the drive it till the engine blows option, not every imminent failure is a risk to bystanders, a lot of transmission and engine issues an even some frame issues are only a problem for the driver and may or may not be worth the cost of a repair and in some cases they do plan on repairing it but cant afford it right now and/or the parts arent available
Instead of, “customer declined repairs” we should have a, “shop declined to repair” series. On a lot of these I would tell the customer I can’t help you - get that out of my shop.
That last one... Be funny if they just bought it and went back saying there were issues with the suspension... Warranty and insurance should decline stupidity

Customer declined repairs. Customer goes to three other shops. Three shops all agree with first shop's assessment. Customer continues to drive car. Car falls apart. Customer is shocked.
It was a while back, but the Department of Transport that runs roadside inspections in Queensland was at one stage ordering cars that were unfit to drive to be scrapped on the spot and crushed into a cube of metal. I don't know if they're still doing that but it took a lot of bad cars off the road. Authorities everywhere should be looking into the feasibility of doing this in their own area. It would certainly send a message to people running unsafe vehicles on the roads.
I love the gentle jab at the toaster video. You know that person is going to see it, since they sent it to you in the first place. I hope they get a good chuckle!
Wow, Québec Canada actually sounds like a sensible place to live.. Take it to another shop all you want.. Just make sure it's on the back of a tow truck.

Man im glad the only problem my truck is having atm isnt even a problem, but a perplexing electronic mystery. I have systematically repeated an experiment, as i drive past a certain house going south 100% of the time I'll hear a capacitor charging up within 5 feet of the same spot. If i circle back and head north it doesnt do it, but when i circle back again to the south, sure enough in same spot it charges up. Now that being said, the systematic approach to troublshooting this has been powering off equipment one at a time until the noise doesnt happen in this spot. I have since removed the radio entirely, and it still happens, the only other electeonics on my truck are the headlights and blower motor. Tried driving past the same spot with them both on and off etc, still hear the noise. Ive left my cellphone at home, and it still does it. The only thing i think it can be is something with powerline static, my ignition system, and the static energizing/inducing voltage into a capacitor. Just so happens to be in the same spot, doesnt happen anywhere else repeatably though i have heard it a few times elsewhere but didnt really pay much attention to it. But I'm baffled af.
I never knew how good the condition of my car was until I started watching this channel. My vehicle is just plain old and high mileage, but it gets regular maintenance; worn interior, no more wheel covers, and paint, but safe to drive for me and my fellow motorist. Some of these are just plain scary to think that I, or my family or friends may be close enough to these rambling wrecks to be endangered by them.
Are there any states where the shop is required to report serious safety defects to the department of motor vehicles in those cases where “the customer declined repairs” ?
States with mandatory inspections will suspend your registration if it doesn't pass within a reasonable time. Some states are more thorough than others (smog), but all that do it require at least safety checks.
There are states where a car must pass annual inspection for road safety to be issued a registration renewal sticker. But I don't know of any "mandatory shop reporting" states. You wouldn't want shops to have the authority to report safety problems, because that provides an incentive for the shop to lie to the customer about needing work that isn't actually needed, or even breaking the car themselves to scam an otherwise-unneeded repair out of the customer.
@@jakeamato6761California doesn’t have safety inspection. Only smog. They don’t give a single shit about safety, only their precious emissions (scheme to make being poor in California even more expensive than it already is)

That rusted out vehicle is absolutely terrifying. I've heard of horror stories from Facebook Marketplace where someone sells a rusted out parts car, just to have that same car listed the next day by the buyer with the intention to sell it to someone to drive.
I think seeing all these over the past months affected my decision (among other things) to buy a new car rather than used. Unreal what people let their vehicles turn into
Unlike the old days, a lemon used car may cost more to repair than it is worth and is often too complicated for the shade tree mechanic to work on. I think I too will be looking to buy a new car.
Yeah, I got lucky enough to have Chase (my bank) send me a 3.5% loan offer up to 25k during the tail end of Covid so I didn't quite get a new car, but I got a 2 year old car that still had 5 years warranty on it. It's been really nice
That one with the missing castle nut and cotter pin reminds me of the one time I let a garage replace the ball joints on my truck. I was working at the time and couldn't get to it before having to help my brother move home after college. They replaced them all right, but didn't put cotter pins in place. My pop picked the truck up from the shop and felt something wrong. Both of the nuts on the side they replaced had backed off. He tightened the nuts again and stuck a nail in to keep them in place. I took the truck BACK to the shop and told them to put the pins in. They did, but the shop "manager" said that cotters pins were not necessary. I never had that place touch my '65 Ranchero again.
"I had the work done at another shop".. Translation.. "I found some kid who had NO idea what he was doing and he made it worse and way more expensive to fix"
I am absolutely amazed at the severity of some problems that customers decline repairs. I hope the shop gets a signed declination and pictures so that they do not lose a lawsuit upon someone's death.

These clips really make me appreciate that we've got the TÜV here in Germany, they may be annoying at times but at least they keep stuff like those rolling deathtraps for everyone off the road and we can have the Autobahn partially thanks to it.
If it's true what they said about the safety laws in Quebec, then bravo! There needs to be a lot more places like that, and of course the shops willing to enforce it!

Not to be an ass but does it concern anyone else that we share the roads with some of these folks? Our k-12 system might do well to implement some basic vehicle care into the curriculum 🤪
I've been saying that for years. Never used one bit of Calculus or Chemistry after graduating high school. They should instead teach basic finances, maintenance, how to use some basic tools and how to report taxes. I messed up my taxes so bad the first time I did it myself, the Canadian government audited me LOL
I had a similar issue with my floor mat _so I got rid of the floor mat!_ A simple visual test told me the problem. Literally on Monday of this week I took my car in to the repair shop. It needed ESC/StabiliTrak system test, replacing of the brake switch, a/c electrical / air volume test, an air filter replaced, a belt replaced and the rear wiper replaced. It cost a _lot_ to have it done, but there wasn't any way I was going to decline the repairs (had to put it on CC). Funny part is that my rear wiper blade has not been in stock in both the auto parts stores I've visited the last two years and wasn't available at the repair shop a year ago, either. Apparently an extremely rare rear wiper. 😆

where iam from it is like that, if the shop diagnoses a fault that makes the car not roadworthy/dangerous, then they are not allowed to let the car leave other then on a flatbed. if it is severe enough, then all your plaques wich indentifies the car as streetlegal get scraped, then you have to tow it away and have to get it inspected by the cops within a certain timeframe.
Think it is like that here. We also have mandatory controls you need to do. It is pretty good to avoid complete dangerous wrecks. It is annoying to do the inspections but I know how many dangerous cars they prevent. A lot of people don’t understand how cars work or how to do maintenance.
I literally just bought a truck where the thermostat was installed BACKWARDS. Paid $1,300 for the vehicle, with brand new truck tires, and now I have a great working truck.
It reminds me of that famous airliner writeup by pilots: "Autoland system lands excessively hard." The maintenance corrective writeup: "Autoland not installed on this airplane" 😮

When I was 4 years old (I'm 39 now.
Towtruck: Well, it could be-
Mom: It's the radiator.
She did not mention this man to the mechanic)
Mechanic: Well, they did a bad job! Probably lazy, eh? So many garages scam people! But if you'd sign the work order-
Mom (Now using the 'I know you're lying, and I will give you this *one* chance to be honest' tone): I know what the problem is.
The 1% is the real issue) and never fixed them, so mom had her friend fix the issues, and she sent the New Hampshire garage the bill, along with a letter from my mother that said, and I'm paraphrasing:
I know you caused every issue listed on this enclosed repair order in order to cheat me.
Cars are for *men*!'
And they picked the wrong woman to try that BS on.
I'm not saying they weren't trying to scam her, but if her usual mechanic missed the radiator, is it inconceivable that he missed other stuff, too?
@@Drew-bc7zj You're not wrong, but keep in mind; I'm relaying a 30+ year old event.
All I can remember is 'white smoke', 'easy fix', and 'mechanic treated my mother like she was stupid'.
What's scary is that these are the same people who are allowed to vote and procreate. Seriously. Owning a car isn't that complicated.
This is people's lives were dealing with folks.
Also they are actually driving these vehicles around posing a huge threat to the public at large... it's almost criminal levels of neglect.
@@kiefershanks4172 The fact there seems to be a lack of a mandatory vehicle safety inspection in the places these videos are filmed makes it even worse

"Another shop" is usually code for either:
1) Thanks for the free diagnostic. I'll fix it myself.
2) My cousin Reggie says he can fix it for a quarter of what you quoted.
Either way, just have the work done when it's first pointed out that it is needed.
Or act like they don't know how a "street sign" got under their car or something like that 😅.
And no, in my thirty years there, they never learned.
Nope, they never do. They don't have time to actually SCHEDULE maintenance, they don't have money to PAY for maintenance, but they always have time and money to spend when the production line breaks ROFLMMFAO!!!

So yes, quite probably.
The "just purchased" rotted out car that isn't road worthy is far too common. How ppl don't look under a car, new or old, to look for leaks, damage or rust is beyond me. But this explains all the $10k vehicles with rotten frames and missing floors i see at dealerships around NY

And migrating all over the east coast now.
How did the drivers feet not immediately fall out the floor? That car was barely holding together.
@@bsmith1164at the very least it would sound like a giant wind tunnel. Some people have no clue what to look for when buying a car. Of course the seller knows they'll eventually find a sucker that'll buy it.
the one thing not mentioned was what kind of car it was, due to the issue im gonna say it was an old car or truck that the guy bought as a classic and is going to go hang out at parking lot car shows with it, the owner just learned why classic cars cost so much
I was very confused by the first capless fuel filler once too. But theirs is even LABELED!

@@Gmacrone Most Fords are like that now. I believe some GM and Honda vehicles also do it. It's not actually capless. The cap is just a spring-flap that gets pushed out of the way when you push the nozzle in.
What amuses the hell out of me are "capless" fuel intakes...that have caps. Or inserts. You can't have it both ways, vehicle manufacturers.
Windshield washer fluids generally contain toxic chemicals, including methanol and isopropyl alcohol, depending on the blend.

I feel bad for that guy who bought the completely rusted out car. Fixing it would have been, in a word, uneconomical.
Well if the shop charges you arm and leg what would you do? Just agree to whatever they want to charge you? Most people expect problem to be an easy fix not a major financial investment.
thats exactly WHY you would decline repairs. there arent any cars out there that would still be worth repairing in that condition, all they comment on most of these is declined repairs, that doesn't necessarily mean they planned on driving it or if they do they probably dont intend to go farther than absolutely necessary
edit: theres also the drive it till the engine blows option, not every imminent failure is a risk to bystanders, a lot of transmission and engine issues an even some frame issues are only a problem for the driver and may or may not be worth the cost of a repair and in some cases they do plan on repairing it but cant afford it right now and/or the parts arent available

I don't know if they're still doing that but it took a lot of bad cars off the road. Authorities everywhere should be looking into the feasibility of doing this in their own area. It would certainly send a message to people running unsafe vehicles on the roads.

In quite a few countries it is mandatory to inform authorities, either police or some other (vehicle registration) agency.

Some of these are just plain scary to think that I, or my family or friends may be close enough to these rambling wrecks to be endangered by them.
I think the ants in the engine qualify as a definition of bugs in the system.
Are there any states where the shop is required to report serious safety defects to the department of motor vehicles in those cases where “the customer declined repairs” ?
Not sure about states, but there are countries where it is mandatory to report it to authorities if the vehicle is a hazard on the road.
A lot of these vehicles would not be driven legally in Pennsylvania.

"Technition filmed it with his toaster" xD Nice one.
Shops should be required to turn owners in to authorities when they decline repairs on major safety issues
Most shops are already incompetent and greedy. Giving them official power won't end like you think it will.
where iam from it is like that, if the shop diagnoses a fault that makes the car not roadworthy/dangerous, then they are not allowed to let the car leave other then on a flatbed. if it is severe enough, then all your plaques wich indentifies the car as streetlegal get scraped, then you have to tow it away and have to get it inspected by the cops within a certain timeframe.
The laws on that vary by state/country.
Think it is like that here. We also have mandatory controls you need to do. It is pretty good to avoid complete dangerous wrecks. It is annoying to do the inspections but I know how many dangerous cars they prevent. A lot of people don’t understand how cars work or how to do maintenance.
many authorities are already understaffed and have better to things to worry about
Great video and the Chevy Nova at the end is SO awesome!!
2:57 Just Rolled Out
I literally just bought a truck where the thermostat was installed BACKWARDS. Paid $1,300 for the vehicle, with brand new truck tires, and now I have a great working truck.
It reminds me of that famous airliner writeup by pilots:
"Autoland system lands excessively hard."
The maintenance corrective writeup:
"Autoland not installed on this airplane"
😮
The best garage video channel on you tube.
I don't know what I find more shocking: the rusted out death traps that customers refuse repairs on or the absolute filth that some people allow to accumulate in their cars. That's why I always preferred being a fleet mechanic. Paid professional drivers you can hold accountable, though the stupid can be just as serious.
Great Video!
That last customer must’ve been like “honey I gotta stop drinking but the road here is a bit bumpy.”
