Chevy Chase, still deadpan

- Even at 78, a year to the week after a near-fatal heart failure, comedian Chevy Chase is serving up improvisation (and, perhaps, a little bit of introspection) in his conversation with correspondent Jim Axelrod. The two discuss Chase's rise from breakout star of "Saturday Night Live" to a string of hit films, including "Fletch" and the "Vacation" series, and the sitcom "Community."

Man it broke my heart seeing how he’s breathing. Probably due to the heart issue. He’s truly a comic legend!
glad you mention that. I was thinking the same thing. This interview made me sad cause I don't think we'll be getting much Chevy Chase
In the medical field, we call them “blue bloaters”. The blue lips, trouble oxygenating im sure, probably has some of chronic bronchitis after years of smoking, cocaine, alcohol, etc. I know they mentioned heart failure, but the two diagnosis aren’t mutually exclusive.
Until I guess he had the heart failure he was atleast 300 pounds, in his 70s being 300 pounds and smoking cigarettes like a freight train, not a good plan for good health. Atleast he's still alive and mentally okay.
Years and years of heavy drug use didn’t help either.
He's still smokes cigarettes, thats why he's having trouble breathing.
Love him or hate him, he still has that quick wit! I loved his comedy as I grew up in the 1980's. =)
Please, no hate speech.
I think the over-hate for this guy is ridiculous. It's based on what, 3 or 4 people saying he was difficult to work with? A lot of people are difficult to work with, that's called working. By many accounts, working on the set of Community was a nightmare because it was run so poorly, Chevy was just the guy who said it aloud. And the famous "fight" at SNL wasn't started by Chase it was started by the Murray brothers and wasn't even serious, it just got hyped over time. I'm sure Chevy isn't always super nice, but he's clearly not the monster he's portrayed as these days.
@@-Ricky_Spanish- Even if he was difficult, that doesn't matter if you're a box office draw. But, once his films stopped making top dollar, that's when stories about him being difficult started to circulate, and the roles became fewer and far between.
@@DontrelleRoosevelt if a female comedian is obnoxious and slooooty.....everyone celebrates her as "strong-willed" and "not afraid to be herself"....but if a man does the same thing he's called a "bully" and "difficult"
One of the greatest physical comedians of all time. I know people say he's difficult to work with but damn he's funny. I absolutely loved him in Community, it was def noticeable when him and Donald Glover left.
I don’t know how or why people would say Chevy was difficult to work with. I’d give anything to have worked with him on National Lampoons vacation lol
@@Yourock123 chevys funny but he’s a very self centered person, he’d interrupt scenes and script reading, argue with the cast and he was very racist to Donald glover
Sometimes I’ll say it actors difficult just because they speak their mind because there’s a lot of cases where an actor is a good actor and they’re friendly but they just pick up for themselves so then they label them difficult because in Hollywood they don’t like accurate speaking up for themselves, they just basically expected to do what they wanted to do
@@tammiepage6489 that makes no sense, take an English class then come back
Legend, but gretest physical comedian?? Nah, think Jerry Lewis, Jim Carrey..those are physical...Chevy was great comedian
Love Chevy Chase. He has made me and my family laugh more than any person alive. His "I don't care" attitude is the part of him that we all love best.
No matter what, I will always love Chevy Chase! It seems this interview clip has enlightened me on a little something about why he has always notoriously had a strongly abrasive nature towards his co-stars. His mother married a man who abused him and in order to hide his insecurities, he used outlandish humor but really pushed his ego to the limit! I guess it worked well for him having such phenomenally successful film roles especially during the eighties. Foul Play is one of my all time favorites with him as well as National Lampoon's Vacation and Funny Farm and Three Amigos and Modern Problems.
He is a comedic genius and I will always be thoroughly respectful towards him!

Couldn’t have said it better myself. No other like him. I stand with Chase on his “issues”..co stars who didn’t get it we’re just cupcakes .
Same here
Well said. Thank you very much?
The National Lampoon movies were my favorite to watch as a kid, Christmas vacation especially
Holiday road!!!!!!!
Same here,I have all the vacation movie's on DVD
The original is incredible
He may not be perfect or a saint, but he's a legend.
I was born in the late 80s and I grew up watching Chevy Chase movies. He's one of those actors or actresses where you hear negative stuff about them, but you still love them. Providing laughter for so many years is the greatest medicine anyone can ask for.
Say what you want, but he is talented and a unique style of comedy. Still a great comedian. Caddyshack and Seems Like Old Times, just a couple great films.
If he mistreats people that’s unacceptable

@@davidlemaster2034 Dude, stop copy-paste the same message under every comment. You sound desperate for attention and sad. It also makes me believe you didn't even come up with that message on your own, you copied it from someone else. Pathetic.
I can tell he's not well, his labored breathing; pale lips and overall sputtering/breathy vocalities. His heart is having trouble, along with his Smoking habits. It's a shame to see our comedic legends grow unwell, but that's life 🙁 Thank you Chevy for all the amazing films/one liners, and antics throughout the years. I just hope he can find peace and joy in his remaining years.
I got to meet him once on the set of Community. It was a short interaction but such an honor!
@@tenbones545 Here was the interaction: I saw him walking towards me. Often when I would visit the set the actors would come up and say hi just to be friendly. I thought that’s what he was doing but it turned out he was just walking by. I said “Hey, how’s it going?” He responded “Good.” And kept walking. 😄
I think Chevy just says what he wants and he is 100% committed to his deadpan delivery. He is genuinely like that which is what he meant by he was just himself as Fletch. It's like in The Prestige where you actually live your act. His style and comedic timing is so damn good and I'll always be a fan.
Yes I agree 👍💯
I actually do understand Chevy Chase and I respect the man he is. He may be the way he is, but there is nothing wrong with that either. He is blunt, upfront, and still willing to make fun of himself.
He jabs, he pokes, but it's meant in good humor, well mostly, even not, it's still pretty funny.
He doesn't take himself seriously, neither should you
His big brother jabs stems from his hate of bullying and dealing with it from his pyscho analyst stepfather.
He empathize with it, because he understands it and the hypocrisy of it at a deep kevel, so he jabs to see if you understand how deep you understand his pain by jabbing at you. Naturally, not everyone will appreciate nor understand that.
I understand Chevy.
Well said
I feel like you missed the early 2010s where he was a down right wreck on Community. Racist, jealous and a big baby. He’s never really made amends for that publicly.
As an 80's kid, it's been difficult seeing some of the icons you grew up with grow so old. A recent example is the new Ghostbusters movie where we have one more moment with his contemporaries, Aykroyd & Bill Murray, back in character. Whereas I & most of the others in the cinema squealing with delight at their appearance, someone sitting behind me quietly said "dayum, bruh, they OLD!" & it really bothered me...because he's right. Some of Chase's other co-stars like Steve Martin & Martin Short seem perennial & in some ways, timeless. But even they can't escape the sands of time & are starting to look as elderly as Chevy. Then again, that's not a bad thing. If he's truly happy (or at least satisfied) with who he is, then that's more than can be said about most people.
The vacation movies are one of his greatest works that he's ever did.
Fact's

Come on, let's get to that Community movie already! We need Pierce in it, he was pivotal
He’s dead, Jim

Fletch is greatness!
ONE OF THE GREATEST COMEDIANS OF ALL TIME .... TOP 5
just got done watching the two fletch movies. absolutely loved them. The 80's music, the scenery, the feel of it. chevy is just an awesome dude. love his movies!
GIVE HIM A JOB. HE'S A GENIUS. ANY AGE.
Absolutely. He shows he can give a great comic character.
I love his Fletch films, Spies Like Us, 3 Amigos, Vacations, Deal of the Century, and Memoirs of an Invisible Man.
I'm watching Memoirs now. Excellent movie. 😎
We need more actors that are as honest as he is. People are so scared of being canceled these days, but the only thing that's being canceled when you buckle to them is your dignity. Chevy understands that perfectly, he knows it's more important to be yourself no matter what people think.
to all the people saying that he looks old.... don't forget when we were kids watching Christmas vacation he was already almost 50 .......
Yeah, seems like people forget that as human beings we all get older so it’s kind of rude to be like oh this person looks old is called life you’re not gonna look young forever
How can you NOT adore someone who is happy with himself!?
" Only the Best" Then you get Chevy Chase~ Thank's "Sunday" and Chevy ~ Love & prayers~

Still so funny and so fast. One of the greatest comedians of all time.
I thought Spies Like Us was peak Chevy. It wasn't a blockbuster, but it competed with some great movies in 1985.
Take notes kids: how you carry yourself and treat people can come back to reward or hurt you
I Have All Respect For Chevy Chase 👍💯
Those are the real actors that never gave up cus are blessed with life & the joy
I used to have the biggest crush on him. I love his movies. I've always thought he was a genius comedic actor- truly a legend. Despite the things people say about his personality and the things he's said/done. It makes me sad seeing him so aged.
FOUL PLAY IS STILL MY FAVORITE..
Chevy had wit that was solid gold. Hilarious guy that left his mark when comedy was real comedy.
Everybody knows abot Fletch and the Vacation movies but Chase was in some great movies. If you ever wanna take the time machine to watch some really good late 70s-80s films then check out Caddyshack, Three Amigos!, Funny Farm, Modern Problems, Seems Like Old Times, Foul Play, Spies Like Us and Nothing But Trouble. Warning about Nothing But Trouble its a dark comedy and not for families but I loved that masterpiece.
I'm actually watching "Memoirs of an Invisible Man". Always liked this movie.
I think he does care but sometimes a certain F* it attitude gets a hold of him, but still, one of my comedic heroes
Nobody dislikes Chevy Chase. He's been a funny comedian for many millions of fans. He's added some great funny moments into history. The owner of this channel must have some personal issues
I do.
A true comedic giant.
Legend. Made it look effortless
He’s one of my favorite actor
Big Chevy fan and Community fan. I think a lot of the Chevy/Community fracas came from the long hours and maybe people thought he was a diva but that's got to be a rough schedule for a 67 year old, especially when you see him in an obvious health decline here. I wish that rather than get into a bru ha ha, Chevy and the showrunners would have worked out a way to give Chevy some better hours and perhaps that would have led to less Pierce on the show but I would have preferred less Pierce to no Pierce. I hope they can mend fences and patch things up to get Pierce in the Community movie.
Why does CBS keep reposting this interview?
The first one had audio issues
Right.... 3rd time reposting it
Especially when it's really not that great of an interview. He seemed pretty closed off to reflecting about himself and his career. I get kind of bad vibes from him.

One of the funniest men of his era. Always played the smartass who ends up getting squashed.
He's just an amazing human!!
Absolutely love him. Chevy chase raised me. Well, not literally…
Chevy chase is cut from a different cloth. He doesn’t mesh with the younger, more sensation generation. Doesn’t change the fact that he’s one of the best physical comedians of all time.
Don’t worry Chevy…we like who you are as well…ALOT!!! I still quote his characters at least once a day! One of my all time favorites, simply put, if he was in it, I was watching it!

I still get goosebumps when he gets on the roller coasters with the late john candy while candy is freaking out.

I'm Team Chevy Chase All The Way
OMG I have only just found this. Breaks my heart to see how poorly he is. He is an amazing comic, actor. So wish he was able to do one more lampoons film.
If he doesn't care he has exactly what he deserves, good comic or not. Not one producer will back up a project where volatile situations may form due to an intransigent and egomaniac personality. For what it's worth, I love his movies but I'd probably think differently if I had to work with him.
Chase is hilarious 😂
That’s awesome cause they made that movie the last laugh I don’t know exactly when it came out but I just watched it and the last line of this interview is a big part of that movie

Chevy needs to call his old friends Steve and Marty to get on Only Murders In The Building!
I think its safe to say this mans name is a household name for many families.
Thanks Chevy! hope you are doing ok.
He was so funny
Why do they keep posting this?
Let's be honest here. If Chase is in a show or a movie the reason your watching it is because CHEVY is in it and you KNOW it will be FUNNY. I am sure that annoys many of the younger actors who don't really understand his brand of humor compared to their woke nonsense. It's sad to see a legend getting old and knowing we won't have him for much longer.
You can see he's so tired of answering the same stupid questions after all these years!
Let the man work
1 billion in the 80s was way more impressive than than now or even 10 years ago
Always will love him
Chevy is looking so good his age. He’s lost a lot of weight!
His comedic timing is second to none..
