    The engine doesn't matter when it comes to making a game, at least not at a non industrial level. If you make a game alone or with some friends all comes down to passion and workrate. The hardest part is finishing a game and be happy with it.

    from what I've poked around with, RPG Maker seems perfectly capable of handling Traditional JRPGs, as well as Visual Novels with JRPG elements. I... Think I could drag MV kicking and screaming into Action-RPG land, too with enough javascript (something more fitting for a General Purpose engine like Game Maker, Unity, or Godot). If you're looking to learn game design, or even pitch an idea to a team (which is what you'd be doing if you wanted to use Unreal Engine practically speaking), it'd do well for that in the above genres.

    I genuinely believe RPG Maker is a great place to start game development (Or just to do it in general so long as it suits your needs (Just... don't use it to make a platformer or an FPS (Which is possible btw, I've seen it be done). Lol)). For my main RMMV project, I'm mixing it up by making it semi-text-based (So, dungeon/town exploration is done via messages). There's a ton you can do with the software. Even if it seems impossible at first, there's probably a way to do it if you find the right stuff. That being said, there's nothing wrong with a simple/typical JRPG from it. :)
    (Also, if you start using any RPG Maker, I recommend starting by making a super tiny game without using outside scripts/plugins just to get a feel for the program)
    Long story short: I love RM (And RM games by extension) and think it has a ton of potential.

    If you have no coding experience and want to make an old school turn based RPG. RPG Maker is an amazing place it takes practice and time but it is amazing how much you can do just from playing around with it.
    But if you want to do something besides old school turn based RPGs you will need to learn coding and/or another tool. Not to say it can't be done in RPG maker, but it can be very hard and time consuming, and at that point it makes more sense to learn another more versatile tool (like unity).
    FTR I love RPG maker I have used it dramatically more than any system and it is the only one I have ever done what can really be called a complete game with.

    Rpgmaker is nice but a lot of people make bad gamed with it and plus is highly restricted and it's annoying but plug-ins come into help, my opinion on rpgmaker is if you have the money try looking for someone else but if you want rpgmaker, just because you don't need to code actually treat the game your making with respect and put actual work and effort into it

    • @DFX2KX

      Part of the restrictions it has comes as a consequence of making it approachable. You don't need money to get something with fewer restrictions: Godot, Unity, and Unreal are all free (with the latter two having some caveats with commercial use). And even Game Maker is in the same ballpark while being more approchable for 2D than the other 3 (it has 3D as well, but it's miserable). What you do sacrifice going to a 'general purpose' engine is the RPG framework being done for you. UI rendering stuff, character animation code, battle math, ect. But if you want to do something very particular that's out of RPGMs wheelhouse, going to a general engine might be worth the extra work. EG: 3D RPGs, though there's an MZ plugin for that...

    There's a lot of tools, new and old, but RPG Maker (and I think MZ perfects that) is just the whole package. It's acessible enough and so adaptable. Other engines like Smile I think you can do something really special, but at the end of the day, if you want to go to the next level, you just use it for its strong points and export. RPG Mkaer you don't really need to.

    Struggling between this or Unity...though honestly, RPG Maker is MUCH more up my alley in terms of what I'd like to use, mainly because it already has turn based stuff in it by default.
    I'm hoping to make a semi-nsfw turn based battle simulator where you collect a bunch of fighters, with hand drawn artwork. My main concern is whether or not I can actually add my own art renders for all the fighters into the game...as I have no idea if its possible, as I haven't seen any examples.
    I also want to include a feature where fighters outfits get visibly destroyed as they lose health....hoping that's possible to make happen to! If so...I'm going ALL in on RPG Maker!!

    • @Cazwolf
      @Cazwolf  Год назад +2

      Depends entirely on your comfort zone! RPG Maker is great if you're not particularly comfortable with Unity, since it comes with most features out of the box. It's also totally possible to make battlers that change based on their HP. I think it's do-able with just events, but I wouldn't doubt that there are plugins out there that do the same.

    I actually have 3 Questions:
    1) I am not good at math. One of the most important things that stopped me from doing an RPG is the combat balance, the exp that every fight gives, the damage output of the player, the health of the enemy and so on... Does RPG maker helps with this too?
    2) Is this engine good for RPG games with a LOT of choises and different endings?
    3) How difficult is it to use Javascripts?

    • @Cazwolf
      @Cazwolf  2 года назад +6

      1) I'm also terrible at math! Though to be honest, I actually tend to avoid the default system in favour of action games, oddly. RPG Maker's database actually uses "battle formulas" for things like skills and items, so it automatically works out how much damage/healing/etc. something will do to a character based on their stats. You can also use the Database to create each character's own EXP curve, so they level up based on how you set that up. However, an enemy's health and given EXP is actually a static number by default. Though you can totally get plugins to change that!
      2) Yep, I'd say the engine is really good for those types of games. You can use Conditional Branches to keep track of all the decisions a player makes, as well as any other stats from the game such as who's in the party, equipment they're wearing... basically anything, actually!
      3) I personally like to say that I'm "allergic" to code, but the times where I've had to look at JS have been pretty smooth. It's a very straightforward language from what I've seen, and probably one of the easiest I've had to deal with. There's a big RPG Maker community with plenty of pre-made JS plugins available though, and lots of helpful people online who might be able to help out with any issues you run into. :D

  • @martinschlegel1823
    @martinschlegel1823 Год назад +2

    I'm seriously looking into RPG maker, mainly because of the free assets.
    That should help a lot in playtesting a prototype before needing to comission expensive art for a hobby project that might not work out.
    As a programmer I'd rather have a similar engine but without java script and more like C++ or C# or Java programming possibilities. Also I'm not sure how deeply you can manipulate the engine itself. But as it's not that expensive, I might try it and if my ideas don't work, it's not too much money spend, and if they do, I can still improve either within RPG maker, programming plugins in javascript and comissioning custom Art or outside of RPG maker remaking the same idea in a different engine.

    Questions:
    1 - Can you create a custom dice rolling system in the game? Let's say d6 or d20 to make skill check for the characters?
    2 - Can it be implement so the charcater move on top of a square grid only?

    • @Cuprite1024
      @Cuprite1024 2 года назад +1

      1) Ye, you can do it all via events (Using common events would be most convenient). In its simplest form (Using a d20 for example), you could just randomize a variable from 1-20 and have it check for that variable. If you want to get fancier with it, you could use a picture or animation of said die (Be it your own custom sprite or something else entirely) and do stuff with that. I did something like that for a smaller project of mine, tho it functions more like a number roulette on a side of a die. Lol.
      2) If you mean general movement, that's how character movement is by default. If you mean in terms of battle, you'd need to find some plugins for that.
      (Note that almost all of my experience is with *MV* and not MZ)
      ((Also note that I suck at explanations, so hopefully any of this made sense. Lmao))

I found when doing complex cut scenes that re-arranging steps was a nightmare. Would have been a lot easier if I could have done something like WalkTo(x, y).Wait(250).Turn(180).Say("Get over here"), or something. Then I could just cut/paste using any old text editor or IDE. If they offered a license for the assets, I'd buy that in a heartbeat, and do it in something like Godot.

    Seems like you're still active on this video.
    So you mentioned how you can open up games made in RPG maker in the engine, but I can't figure out how to do that and I can't seem to find tutorials. (It's probably something simple and I'm just missing it) If you have time, could you explain it? I'd love to look into how some games were made but can't figure it out.

      Hi, sorry for the late reply, I've been away for a little while! You can open up games if you have the project files. You can get the project files for the sample games mentioned through RPG Maker's official English website. As for other games, you can -technically- open them up through less legitimate means, but it's definitely frowned upon in most cases.

    Hi, i'm not making a game but my brother does, he is making his game on 640x420 resolution with custom art, but he tried to find solution to resize UI for 3 days, basically it almost covers the whole screen,he is using Visustella plugin but i'm not sure it has any feature that helps resizing UI, does anyone know the solution to this issue?

      technically to the very advanced/technical minded/creative modder crowd.
      the coding systems (within reasonable limits) can be used to make any program you want, even other exe programs. doesn't even have to be a game [visual novel, interactive application demos like a calculator are for certain, or those who are expert programmers can maybe even get to more experimental usage like CAD mapping tool for test construction, maybe even as cookie out there ideas such as a series tool add-ons for robotics e.t.c.] I mean, the reason why I say that is the creator of Tetris first founded his game as a test for early 70's-80's GPS mapping systems when technology was still new. With an engine as expandable as RPG maker, it's quite a series of powerful tools with the simplicity of the basic set tools that come with the gaming engine and the ability to open other published games for studying different game creator's way of doing things (manipulating the engine to do things that it normally wouldn't default unless knowing the trick behind it such as resizing pictures on screen through code, manipulating different graphic points, events programming, illusion tricks that work, e.t.c..) that you can seriously do something very awesome with this engine that most people won't think of. But that's not for the noob daydreamer who is going to open up a 1,000 never touched again project of a final fantasy clone to click a few buttons logging off. Those who have serious mastery will appreciate the depth of it all. Sure, during a day n' age people root for Unity & Unreal 3D formula's. The underappreciation of this RPG Maker program has things about it that can make you just love it's surface and intrinsic things. I'm still learning so much more about it as time goes on.

    RPG Maker is a biiiig Scam. In one Version they remove functions, in new Version they bring it back and you always have to pay the full price.

    • @Cazwolf
      @Cazwolf  3 года назад +3

      That's not done with the intent of "scamming" users. It's usually done to increase user-friendliness and streamline the experience overall. There's nothing to stop you from using previous engines if they do what you want them to do.
