If you want RPG Maker to be 3D, then there's "RPG Developer BAKIN". I know that engine is still a baby, but they've got the essentials. Similiar event-based system, just like in RPG Makers. Meaning "no need to learn programming", just like in RPGMs. Besides you can easily import any 3D object into the game. You can make your game 2DHD or 2,5D , scene objects are 3D while animating characters are 2D or even the opposite. Gives you a lot of control with the effects, + can utilize effekseer, capable of post processing which is so easy to use. I can keep adding to the list, but shortly, all the things you do in RPG Makers are now 3D with BAKIN + gives you unity 4 level visual design options. And I think it could be the most fitting engine, if you're creating PS1 / PS2 style horror game with tank controls. And yes community is already building lots of plugins for BAKIN.
I'm the dev for Sonic RPG fangame using MV3D, I can tell you, you do need a lot to do to get what you want and it does give you that different feel to RPG Maker games as a whole. So, yes, it is worth it IF you put a lot of work into it.
I loved using RPG Maker 3 on the PS2, even though it was limited. Making things in 3D was downright magical. I eventually moved on to PC RPG Makers (XP to VX Ace to MV). Each one was more customizable than the last, but I still longed to make maps in 3D. So, when I discovered that MV3D existed (also the MZ version I guess), it felt like I was given a gift from GOD.
I tried using it a while back in MV and while it's incredible work, really incredible, like this should be how it is with the main engine, there's some glitch stuff.
RPG Architect is another pretty cool one to look into if you want the RPG Maker feel but also want it in 3D. It's also made by a solo dev but he's a madman and updates it all the time, with the general ethos that anything that would be a "necessary plugin" should be incorporated directly into the engine. That way, you won't run into nearly as many conflicts as you would with MZ3D. The downside to Architect is that it doesn't currently have plugin support, so you're limited by what the engine itself can do. However, the engine is very robust and in many ways, more robust than RPG Maker itself.
I just bought this two weeks ago!!!!! What caught my eye was how the transition from day to night with shadows was super easy without a ton of code or plugins needed. I can't wait to finish my first release so that I can dive into this because I too have ideas. LOL!
Seeing doom run on a nes is more interesting than seeing it run on Windows 11. Who knows why people like seeing things that are different. If all games look the same, doesn’t matter how good the effect is, people will be numb to it. Being as the 3D effect is unique to rpg maker that makes it more appealing than to see it running in unreal
@@TheOdie I’d recommend it to anyone who wants to branch out from RPG Maker to more action-oriented games. The logic is pretty similar. It’s a work-in-progress engine so it has it’s bugs and limits, but it’s getting better every month.
@@wilpuriarts5895 Have you found good tutorials for gdevelop? The ones I have found are from the company and he is simply speaking and acting too fast for a beginner to follow
Duuude, first person takes horror games to the next level. Just think how scary ao oni would be if the player couldn't see where it was coming from and had to listen for footsteps getting louder instead.
wow neat , but you still have to build each different block object you want to use and assign the textures to it manually eh? i do appreciate what you pointed out about not needing to learn a single line of code with rpgm though....
The reason to get the 3d plug in is because you don't need to learn a bunch of coding to make a terrific game. You do, however need to watch the tutorial by Rikyu. You don't do that, and you are lost. You didn't mention that one can import and use models from blender, or from the demo tutorial game included with (still only 25 bucks)3d plugin, however if your game gets glitchy or slow frame rate, it's too many models, or too much (fabulous)lighting tricks, which just eats up CPU. I've had to cut down the fancy lighting and delete my models to make this game faster. It's so fun, though. I'm an artist too, so if you love a gorgeous game, you can have loads of fun. My only objection is trying to make my own 3d battles, still working on that. Good review!
The concept of this plugin may be good, but honestly - is it necessary? Yes, it's easier for rpg maker devs to have a 3d style game without having to switch to another engine and learn there, but if I can be honest, it still needs a lot of things to tweak. Definitely respect the creator of this plugin for making it, it's definitely something advanced. But I would be afraid to use this plugin in more detailed and graphically intensive games. I feel like the plugin is not that well optimized and simply makes the game lag sometimes. And if we were to use more graphically detailed tilesets, maybe animated tilesets and other plugins that enhance the graphics.. I don't know what would happen and how the plugin would run. Anyway, I agree with everything in the video and I finished watching it to the end. Honestly, if you're focusing on horror games, it wouldn't be a bad idea to incorporate this plugin into first person. Because the less field of view in a horror game - the scarier it is. 👻
I'm not too sure if it's worth it. I won't bother buying this plugin because I'm aware that my game will randomly starts freezing or lagging. I think Ill stick with 2d rpg because it's classic. I haven't gone with 3d rpg most of the time. region numbers and plugin settings will take alot of work remember that!
Godot, Unreal, and Unity don't really do 3D for free because TIME is MONEY. If someone doesn't already know how to use those engines, then it's like, do they spend two years programming Pong to learn how to do this, or do they spend a weekend learning how to use RPG Maker.
That project is finished!
See how I transformed a Kidnapped Horror Game using MZ3D!

This doesn't look like it is for me and I appreciate so much that you did a walk through so I could make that decision without having to buy first!
I'm glad I helped you decide! Just a heads up, there is a free demo version incase you decide to dabble 😛

It certainly have gone a long way since the mv days, though more rigorous testing needed lol

I switched from RPG Maker to GDevelop for my next game, but if I return to RPG Maker I’ll test the 3D for sure.
Haven't heard of GDevelop. I'll have to look it up some time!

There is also a MV version btw

Thank you for still making RPG Maker vids!

Voxel 3d would be cool too
I got mz3d. Its laggy for me unfoftunately. 😢
Oh nooo that's too bad!
Can we make DOOM with these? 🧐
Possible! But certainly not easy
what!? when i was creating a game 16 years ago i guess, in rpg maker i just insert a script to make it a 3d just like that
Wild to hear how long it's been in the works through rm's lifetime!

What’s even going on with rpg unite
Great question. Perhaps it's time to revisit that thing, but do I want to... 🤔
I would try to play Hylics with this plugin.
Hylics 1.5 lol

you need to make a horror game using 3d.
In the works! You can catch my Monthly Developer Review (MDR) videos to catch some behind the scenes 🙂
