Honestly, Hank more than almost any other TV dads aside from like Phil Dunphy, were golden hearted and loved their families unironically, even if they had to grow to do it.
As a non American, Hank has some good points and bad ones. He comes off as an arrogant man and has to control everyone around him and people cannot say no to him. On his good side, he will defend his friends and family against injustice. He is a NY born Texan and I love his pride for his community. I always had found Texans to be very welcoming and extremely friendly.
It's a crime that King Of The Hill isn't as talked about alongside other great shows of that era of television. It's one of my all-time favorite shows. I'd love to see it in this era of time with older versions of the characters.
Growing up in Dallas throughout the 90’s and 2000’s really gave me an opportunity to experience far too much of this show in reality. It’s uncanny how realistic the show was at times!

I had been late an X amount of times, that would warrant one to get detention, every has to gather in one of the presentation rooms, all the students had to fill out a paper with their name and student number, so they would know who is supposed to be at detention at the end of the day, So I wrote Rusty Shackleford as my name and a random student ID number matching the amount of digits that should be in it. Didn't have to go to detention.
Being from Dallas County, I can attest to those old guys who used to hang in the alley drinking a beer and having a smoke after work, solid guys who did real work with their hands, I tell ya what..
There actually was an episode where a guy hires them to help him fix up house in neighborhood. Just for house to get torn down and replaced by a McMansion owned by Ted, Khan's friend.
I grew up watching King of the Hill. Once the show was cancelled, there was a really large dent in American television. The show remains relevant and brilliant.
I remember a period of my life where I was just really angry all the time and something in my life was missing. & I attributed KOTH being gone as part of the reason. It was a show I watched daily even just eating cereal. & it was when Netflix had taken it down and I had nowhere to watch it.

I am from Australia and only just got into King of the Hill after the new Beavis and Butthead seasons dropped. Hoo boy. Did I miss out on some wholesome entertainment. I'm a long term fan of South Park but I reckon they have become a bit cynical. I still love 'em. King of the Hill is absolutely incredible. I might even suggest it's my favourite show ever!

I missed the most recent season. South Park is a nihilistic TV show. Nothing wrong with nihilism, but even the early seasons rest on the idea of nothing during the episode mattering.

It may not have garnered overwhelming popularity during its original run, yet its absence made us painfully aware of the void it left behind when it was no longer on. I live in Texas and can attest to this, my wife and I are in our first house and when I try to do something around the house on the weekend all the older guys from around the neighborhood will come and teach me how to do it right. There's something about Texas. Yep.
I totally identify with those guys. You honestly made their day by allowing them to take over and fix it. To me there is not much better than having a couple beers and getting something done right. It's a simple pleasure but it's so damn satisfying and it's healthier than most dopamine hits available.
I can relate to this. I moved to the Midwest and my neighbor is in his 70s. Before I even met the guy, he would snow blow his driveway and the sidewalk in front, look at the other houses on the street, not be satisfied with how they did it, and would start snow blowing everyone else’s driveways and sidewalks. I’ve lived here 5 years now and he still does it every time it snows without being asked. I really gotta buy the guy a keg at this point with all the beers I owe him.
The best part is you never have to ask people like that anything. It makes there day to get up and be handy. Not only does he feel accomplished at the day for himself. But feels like he accomplished the neighborhood for you all. Awesome people!

I liked this show & then grew to absoutely adore it, particularly after my dad passed away about 20 years ago. He wasn't a blue collar type like Hank, but he had so much of Hank's character & work ethic. I'm sure many die hard fans of this show can relate. I also love seeing all the folks that watch/listen to this show as they fall asleep. I've been doing that too for 10 years i'm sure. I have to rewatch parts the series when i'm awake to see what i'm hearing at night lol!
Mike Judge is so authentic in his respect towards people he grew up around and the characters he developed from them. I think it's why he's so successful because at the base, he seems to really like them all.

I drive a propane truck for a living and we love Hank Hill. He's an icon in our industry. I knew I'd been watching the show too much when I could understand what Boomhauer was saying.

We take a lot of pride in it. Here, you can approach and talk to anybody. If you're lost or in trouble, someone will help you. The South is sometimes a nice place to be, but no one place could possibly have a monopoly on affability. Buffalo, relatively speaking, is not a big city. So it comes as no surprise that you didn't know all this. But now you know.
I heard Judge say on The Fly on the Wall podcast that the Hank Hill character was also based on a guy he delivered the newspaper to as a kid. The way he tells that story is pretty funny, as well. He's a great interview.
King of the Hill is one of the only shows I've binge watched the entire show in the background or with full attention multiple times. It's so good! I found myself even getting into Beavis and Butthead recently. "Hehe FIRE." Mike Judge is just a really funny guy. Haha
KingoftheHill is so insightful, true to human nature. Those of us who live in rural America appreciate the exquisite attention to truthful representation. Silicon Valley is another which evidently expresses the culture exactly. Anyone interested in Crypto now would love the show Silicon Valley.
I only watched like a couple of episodes ten years ago but that was mainly for the memes. Recently now I finally started to have this connection with the show up (probably since I'm an adult now) until the point I binged 8 seasons in like 2 weeks I tell you what.
That's the great thing about KOTH and how the characters came to be. We all know someone that is like Hank. I had a member of my family that was just like Peggy. Of course even the more cartoony characters like Dale, Bill and Boomhauer all have qualities that we can tag on someone we know.
King of the Hill is the most realistic cartoon I've ever seen. Even the animation details that don't matter are impressive... For example, most cartoons would just have generic cars or trucks... Not KOTH... Sure Hank mentions he drives a Ford in the 1st episode, but he didn't have to mention it... The truck was drawn as an F-150. You could just see exactly what it was no different than if it were passing you in traffic. Remember the Emu episode? They even drew the emu's feathers correctly (double-stemmed feathers, only emus have them)... And never mentioned it... But I noticed as a wildlife biologist.
If I was to have Hank hill as a neighbor I can almost assure you I never would have tried meth. lol. Judge is the pivotal parental figure some of us needed in life ngl
Mike Judge is such a legend, man. Most people that try to depict Texans don’t do a very good job of it (I’m born and raised) and the way he does it in King of the Hill is dead on.
My wife and I absolutely love KotH. I've lost track of how many times we've re-watched the show from the first to the last season, and we're still not tired of it. Hank Hill is probably the most likeable, wholesome and inspirational animated character ever created. They sure can't make shows and characters like this anymore, if you know what I mean...
It's not really based on a small town though. It's based on life in the Dallas suburbs. A lot of people underestimate how large Houston/Dallas/Austin is. The metro areas are just as cosmopolitan and diverse as New York or California.

King of the Hill was relatable for me on a couple of levels: In the mid-1970s I lived in a rural community in the San Joaquin Valley of California, which could have been a west coast version of Arlen, Texas; so the Texans in KOTH were slight exaggerations of the guys and gals I gotten to know in California. Many years later I'm working in the Silicon Valley region of California, where I dealt with the likes of the Kahn character; which for me was more 'true-to-life' than the Texans in KOTH. lol

I drive a propane truck for a living and we love Hank Hill. He's an icon in our industry. I knew I'd been watching the show too much when I could understand what Boomhauer was saying.

Google "what is the nickname of Buffalo, NY?" "The City of Good Neighbors" will pop right up. We take a lot of pride in it. Here, you can approach and talk to anybody. If you're lost or in trouble, someone will help you. The South is sometimes a nice place to be, but no one place could possibly have a monopoly on affability.
Buffalo, relatively speaking, is not a big city. So it comes as no surprise that you didn't know all this. But now you know.

I am very impressed of how in depth this show goes into any subject. The punchlines are funny both on surface level and on a deep level.
The South sounds spectacular. This would never happen in the PNW. I can't imagine having good neighbors.
What’s funny is that I never realized there are a lot of Hank Hills in Houston till I started working at my current job lol
I heard Judge say on The Fly on the Wall podcast that the Hank Hill character was also based on a guy he delivered the newspaper to as a kid. The way he tells that story is pretty funny, as well. He's a great interview.

King of the Hill is one of the only shows I've binge watched the entire show in the background or with full attention multiple times. It's so good! I found myself even getting into Beavis and Butthead recently. "Hehe FIRE." Mike Judge is just a really funny guy. Haha
I LOVED this show. it taught me what tolerance was and how america could be. hank didnt understand people sometimes but he was never hateful.

KingoftheHill is so insightful, true to human nature. Those of us who live in rural America appreciate the exquisite attention to truthful representation. Silicon Valley is another which evidently expresses the culture exactly. Anyone interested in Crypto now would love the show Silicon Valley.

I only watched like a couple of episodes ten years ago but that was mainly for the memes. Recently now I finally started to have this connection with the show up (probably since I'm an adult now) until the point I binged 8 seasons in like 2 weeks I tell you what.
Yeah in my teen years I liked Bobby and Dale.
Now I'm Team Propane.
That's the great thing about KOTH and how the characters came to be. We all know someone that is like Hank. I had a member of my family that was just like Peggy. Of course even the more cartoony characters like Dale, Bill and Boomhauer all have qualities that we can tag on someone we know.
Love this story. Hilarious, both Howie and Mike Judge.
King of the Hill is the most realistic cartoon I've ever seen. Even the animation details that don't matter are impressive... For example, most cartoons would just have generic cars or trucks... Not KOTH... Sure Hank mentions he drives a Ford in the 1st episode, but he didn't have to mention it... The truck was drawn as an F-150. You could just see exactly what it was no different than if it were passing you in traffic.
Remember the Emu episode? They even drew the emu's feathers correctly (double-stemmed feathers, only emus have them)... And never mentioned it... But I noticed as a wildlife biologist.
Think we can all agree now that king of the hill is a true american family kind of cartoon.Thank you Mike Judge for the masterpiece.

Mike Judge is such a legend, man. Most people that try to depict Texans don’t do a very good job of it (I’m born and raised) and the way he does it in King of the Hill is dead on.

My wife and I absolutely love KotH. I've lost track of how many times we've re-watched the show from the first to the last season, and we're still not tired of it. Hank Hill is probably the most likeable, wholesome and inspirational animated character ever created. They sure can't make shows and characters like this anymore, if you know what I mean...

Small town America is a great place. Lots of helping and lots of community.
It's not really based on a small town though. It's based on life in the Dallas suburbs. A lot of people underestimate how large Houston/Dallas/Austin is. The metro areas are just as cosmopolitan and diverse as New York or California.

Dude, I swear to God that my dad had these three friends, and they were all standing in the road and drink too. And the most hilarious part of it is, you couldn’t understand what one of them said, another was fat and bald and they literally had a couch out there during the summer. 😂

And your Stories here brought back great Memories of all the Years that I loved in my Beloved State of Texas. I lived there for 17 years total I miss it alot & hope that I can return there to live one day. I have Adult Kids & Grandkids that are still living there to this day..I enjoyed listening to Your You Tube Channel here too Howie. I will Subscribe & listen to it more when I can..I am almost a 7 day Full Time Caregiver here my Relatives & Family Members . So, free time is limited for me. Very limited. I have been Caregiving for 13 years now. Long years. Very long years.
King of the Hill was relatable for me on a couple of levels:
In the mid-1970s I lived in a rural community in the San Joaquin Valley of California, which could have been a west coast version of Arlen, Texas; so the Texans in KOTH were slight exaggerations of the guys and gals I gotten to know in California.
Many years later I'm working in the Silicon Valley region of California, where I dealt with the likes of the Kahn character; which for me was more 'true-to-life' than the Texans in KOTH. lol
