In the USA never think there is actual fruit in anything boxed or bottled unless it actually states it in the ingredients and if it's last or close to last that means there is not much. Yep. That's why it's best to shop the perimeter of the supermarket. That's where the best farm to table food is. Or just go to a separate butcher and grocery store. All the aisles in the middle of the supermarket are filled with over-manipulated products. Some of them contain many items that are not even classed as food!
In Australia we call those all those squash “pumpkins”. Butternut pumpkin is the one we use for soups and cooking. It’s probably the same squash that you showed in the video.
I use mostly Kent (aka JAP) pumpkin. I'm on a low fodmap diet so can't have the butternut. Queensland Blue was the most populous pumpkin when growing up in Australia. I'd never seen a butternut until I was in my 20s. BUT... there are now a huge range of pumpkin seeds that you can buy depending on what type of pumpkins you want to grow.
If you want to know if its really pure olive oil, put the bottle in the refrigerator. If after a few days it turns sold, it is pure olive oil. If is stays liquid or separates, its fake or mixed with other oils.
I read of testing a few years ago that found that ALL imported olive oil in Australia failed quality testing - only the locally grown stuff met the chemical standards of EVOO. I don't know whether the imported oil was up to standard when it left Europe, but the moral of the story is Buy Local.
Australia makes and exports some of the best EVOO. Being relatively new to the market, they have growing and processing methods that produce EVOO from tree to bottle in 4 hours or less. Why anyone would use imported olive oils _in_ Australia is beyond me.
@@WhackBytch256 Those laws we have to stop other countries dumping subsidised agricultural produce here aren't very effective. The imported rubbish is usually cheaper than locally grown and people who don't know the difference will buy the cheap option.
what Hersheys claims is chocolate with a minimum solids content of 10% is known in Holland as "Cocoa Fantasy" and is achieved by pressing the cocoa solids at 300bar for upwards of 12 minutes and the "proper" cocolate(22-24% here in Holland) is only pressed at 300 bar for about 2-3 minutes, i know this because i worked in a cocoa factory for 9 years

Farmed salmon has been said to being fed things containing food coloring ... Because costumers want that certain pink salmon color. Besides other things, wild fish would not be looking for.
In Australia the truly free range eggs -you know, chooks running around outside like you think of in a backyard only on a bigger scale are now being called Feral Eggs. This distinguishes them from the commercial "free-range" that aren't actually free birds that only have to meet a minimum requirement of access to the outdoors for a few hrs per 24 hrs.
(I'm leaving this original comment so the thread makes sense.) Have you tried doing a tasting test between the different eggs? As a Chef, heck even as a person I'm really interested. ;)
@@chefscorner7063there is no comparison, real organic, 100% free to roam chicken eggs are a revelation. Especially for baking. Cheap eggs don't taste bad necessarily but they are certainly lacking flavor and nutrients.

I've been getting fresh eggs lately. One big difference is the shell is thinner with the commercial eggs. Also, the yolk is more orange and tasty on the fresh eggs. Lastly, fresh eggs last unrefrigerated for weeks if you don't wash them until you're ready to eat them. Commercial eggs will go a month past the date if they're refrigerated but you can't leave them on the counter like fresh eggs
In the 60s and 70s, you could buy gallons of ice milk at the grocery store, alongside the ice cream and sherbet. I live in South Africa and we're going into winter now, so they'll be harvesting apples soon. I noticed over December ( the middle of our summer) that most of the apples we were buying were brown in the middle. So I Googled it and learned that apples are actually considered a winter fruit. That's why most winter deserts consist of apple pie, and baked stewed fruits. Knowing that they freeze the fruit explains why they were brown in the center. Thanks for another great video!
They look extremely similar, but daikon is usually a little fatter than a white carrot. Daikon is actually a type of radish. I think the image used make it look more like daikon than a carrot.

The fact about farmed salmon not being pink, I knew already. That is why I do not eat any farmed animals. Did you also know that farmed salmon actually contains high amounts of mercury?! I watched a story about how a man had been eating farmed salmon for many years and started to become very ill, and this illness never got better, so he eventually went to the hospital. Officers below the rank of Lieutenant Commander, such as Lieutenants, Sub-Lieutenants, and Ensigns, may be placed in command of smaller vessels such as patrol boats, corvettes, or smaller support craft. Their command responsibilities would be commensurate with the size and complexity of the vessel they are assigned to. They would still be referred to as the captain of the ship

And as long as they are not bruised apples will keep on your kitchen counter even for a few weeks.
I see a lot of American dessert recipes online call for Cool Whip. I remember it from growing up in the USA. It's deceptively tasty, but is basically water, oils, and lots of chemicals whipped up. I find the idea now of eating it, revolting!

In the USA never think there is actual fruit in anything boxed or bottled unless it actually states it in the ingredients and if it's last or close to last that means there is not much. Everything boxed, bottled or basically the middle aisles including some of the freezer stuff is all just flavored sugar. I love me some flavored sugar but don't be fooled into thinking it's anymore healthy because of the "fruit" just eat actual fruit if that's what you want.
At least where I am (East coast USA), what we call butternut squash are a different shape than Dickinson squash.

(I'm leaving this original comment so the thread makes sense.)
Have you tried doing a tasting test between the different eggs? As a Chef, heck even as a person I'm really interested. ;)
@@chefscorner7063there is no comparison, real organic, 100% free to roam chicken eggs are a revelation. Especially for baking. Cheap eggs don't taste bad necessarily but they are certainly lacking flavor and nutrients.
@@williamdixon-gk2sk You're correct as I remembered (after my initial comment) doing a taste test about 15 yrs ago. Some eggs were store bought reg and organic and some were laid in a roomy coop within a few days of use. There's just no comparison in the flavor and richness of the yolk between production eggs and those laid in better living conditions.

I HAVE made pumpkin pie knowing it was actually pumpkin. It’s simple. Buy the pumpkin from a farmer’s market or a roadside stand. Our city has a farmer’s market as well as a special place called Pecan Park where I think people pay to set up a space there (not exactly sure but I think so). It opens only on Thursdays in the morning and closes at 4 pm. I bought my pumpkin there. I canned the contents, which turned out beautifully! I had enough to make about 6 pies, IIRC. The pumpkin had a nickname, the Peanut pumpkin as it had growths on its skin that looked like peanuts! Plus it was easier to call it that because it had a French name. And the taste was very much like sweet pumpkins, the famous orange ones we see at Halloween.

Wait… Cap’n Crunch’s ship is called the SS Guppy, but SS stands for Steam Ship… and that ship CLEARLY HAS SAILS, NOT A FUNNEL! The prefix for sailing ship is SV, which stands for sailing vessel. What’s going on here, captain?!
(I’m still calling him captain even though he’s a commander)
Apples sold at a grocery store almost always have a thin layer of wax to help preserve them. Parmesan cheese in those plastic containers often have what's basically sawdust in it, look at the ingredients if it says cellulose that's what that is.
Any pre-grated cheese also has cellulose in it.
The cellulose (which a lot of vegetables contain) is what keeps the grated parmesan from caking.

The state outlined in the video is called "South Dakota". There is no state called "Dakota". There's North Dakota and South Dakota. We learned this in grade school.
Great vid (also thank you because gddmn) Total missed opportunity not putting the minecraft cake as the thumbnail tho. That's be pretty funny.
IIRC baby carrots are mostly made from too small or otherwise "misshaped" carrots that wouldn't otherwise be marketable as they are. So, basically, stuff that would otherwise be sold for animal food or just thrown to waste. But they are still priced higher than just plain carrots.
Me finding out about the blueberry LIES:
My disappointment is immeasurable and my day is ruined
I've had blueberry muffins and wondered why they even bother using such a bland fruit. Perhaps I've never tasted actual blueberries. In UK we have blackcurrants and they do have actual flavour.
@@happydays1336 partly humorous, partly me being me and not bothering to really think about what I eat 😅 I'm trying to get better about that but my laziness is real somedays
