    Beck is one of the greatest rock players to ever live and one of a tiny handful whose singular touch can be identified with one or two notes. His sound is beautiful and more uniquely “his own” than just about anyone I can think of. This is a master lesson in taste.

    Beautiful version. It just stays with you years after you've listened to it and tells a powerful tale without words. Clapton seems totally immersed in Beck's soulful masterpiece !!

    dustyturntable hits the nail on the head. It's not about who's better. Different styles, different sounds, different techniques. Let's just thank the Lord we got a chance to hear them in our lifetime. Noone is " THE BEST " . Or maybe they ALL are.

    This has always been my favorite version of this; although this has been edited. Were I Clapton, I'd pack up my guitar for good. Jeff is light years ahead of Eric as a player. Such emotion. Such feeling. He sings to me.

    There are a lot of truly great guitarplayers, but I've always found that Jeff was from another dimension, maybe like Hendrix was. In his hands a guitar is a totally different instrument than in other's. So unorthodox. His soul, through his fingers, comes out of the guitar. I think he's underrated. But again, there are a lot of great players.

    Holy shit I think you're right! And I've never seen Jeff use a pick before. Amazing the tones he gets from the Tele. Humbuckers no less. Seen him play 3 times and always the Strat with a Whammy. How in the hell does he get a Tele to sound like this?!?! The man is UNFREAKINGBELIEAVABLE.

  • @RoughBoy1056

    Clapton is good, sure; But, there's a reason why it's Jeff Beck Playing Lead: With Jeff Beck you don't need a singer or Words, his artistry carries the show for the entire duration of the concert, and as good as Clapton may be, he can't say that about his playing.

  • @DaveyKrechtner
    @DaveyKrechtner 14 лет назад +1

    Although I love EC, its true that he's gone a long way on very little in terms of technique, innovation or style. JB on the other hand has taken guitar playing to new and unbelievable levels of brilliance but with no where near the same level of recognition as EC. Just goes to show that the masses have no real appreciation of what guitar should be.

    You'll find that track on Blow by Blow - an amazing album and one of many by Jeff Beck who is without doubt one of the most amazing and influencial guitarists off all time - he inspired many of todays ROCK giants and his technique has been emulated over and over again but non can still come close to the emotion and integrity of his playing!

    Thank you. Just beautiful. Thanks for posting. For those who care or don't know, this is a song he dedicated to the late great Roy Buchanan. Complete with the Telecaster touch. Very nice. This live performance differs somewhat from the album cut on Secret Policeman's other, where the song is extended for another 45 seconds and includes a very focused and more agressive solo. Perhaps taped on a different night...

    3) And it’s not just about a guitarist’s technique. It’s about the genuine feeling & soul they put into their playing, like the way Johnny Lang & the late Steve Marriot sing. That’s why it doesn’t matter that there’s a million kids nowadays that have the technique down at age 14. Sure they’re “wunderkinds”, but the novelty wears off when they get older & they’re still copying other people’s licks, instead of INVENTING their own & breaking new ground.

    Jeff's playing makes me think of Miles Davis. They both have a great sound and an instinct for using space.
    They'll leave a gap and then just at the right time they bust cut into the mix with short cutting runs that send chills running down your spine.

    Jesus Christ! How the hell to people keep on harping on about Crapton! Crapton made his name in the '60's and his playing has stayed there! Crapton hasn't played anything fresh or exciting since Cream! Beck is of the same generation as him, and keeps on growing as a musician. As for all this "Feel" bullshit, Becks' playing on this! AMAZING! Just because some guys can play fast doesn't mean you can't play with feeling either! Check out Steve Vai's Whispering a Prayer - Jaw Dropping!

    Beck playing like the absolute master he is... no need to dis Clapton, folks.. he is what he is... and he is wonderful... he thinks he can't play like he used to... I would disagree... he has MUCH more soul in his playing in the last decade... these 2 go back a LONG way ... be very interesting to have a drink with them and listen to stories... any producers out there? it would be a great show... both unique for many reasons.. (though no doubt Beck is the more innovative player... MY favorite)

    This was from 1980 or 1981, I think, and it was the first time Jeff and Eric had played together.
    The reason Eric "doesn't get a chance to shine" is because it's not his song. They did two songs together, this one, and Crossroads. Needless to say, Crossroads is where Eric stepped out and wailed.

  • @PROWLERS1

    I don't know where you got this, but someone obviously had the foresight to turn on the VCR while watching MTV back in the early '80s. I've been searching for this clip for years, it's one of my favorites. The VHS tape from this show only had "Further Up The Road" and a lot of other crap! This is also a perfect example of how terrible MTV has become today. This is such great music. Long live RUclips! And thanks for posting!

  • @Kohntarkosz
    @Kohntarkosz 16 лет назад +1

    Well, Clapton's a more famous musician, but I think as artists go, I would say Jeff has been more artistic over the years. Clapton's made many records that were more about being radio friendly than they were about presenting great music (Eric even admitted his record company made him change one of his albums because "There's not enough singles").
    Jeff, by contrast, I think has just always done his thing and has for whatever reason been less bothered about hit singles or being "radio friendly".

    Actually, Jeff has sung in the past. If you check out his first solo single after he got sacked by the Yardbirds, Hi Ho Silver Lining, that's him singing the lead vocal. On his album Flash, he also sang the song Get Workin'. Either song will demonstrate why you don't usually hear him sing.
    And in fact, when you can play guitar like THAT, who needs vocals anyway?!

    2) And other guitarists have appeared that are original, like Sonny Landreth who plays slide like nobody else, fretting behind the slide & using harmonics (check out the song Congo Square). Eric Johnson, with his one of a kind violin-tone & attack; Daniel Lanois (his solo on Lotta Love), etc. Clapton sounds recycled now, but remember he basically invented rock lead guitar in the 60’s with his “woman” tone & fiery playing. If it wasn’t for people like him, rock guitar wouldn’t be the same.

    4) Most of these kids don't even play with passion either, they're just robots who think speed equals "good playing". You hear people say "Clapton / Hendrix / Van Halen aren't so good -- I can play their stuff easy". What they're forgetting is that you not only have to play it, you have to invent that style & compose the songs/licks in the first place, AND feel it. Violin, cello & piano have been around for a long time, & no one's tired of them yet. I doubt guitar will disappear either.

    The only problem w/ this video is that someone {MTV???} cut roughly :40 seconds out of the song. I have the original LP as well as CD and this song is 3:45 long. What is cut in this video is the part where Jeff does the fast run down the neck, and then plays some amazing licks... all of that is cut from this. Perhaps I'll make a video w/ the complete song. Won't have any "footage," just a photo of Jeff, but at least people can hear the entire song.

There's an album called The Secret Policeman's Other Ball which has Further On Up The Road (with the intro to Cause We've Ended As Lovers cut into beginning for some reason) and Crossroads on it. I can't remember if it was released on CD, but I bet if you keep an eye on E-bay, you can find an LP copy at a reasonable price.

    I always thought Jeff should have toured with Rolling Stones to expand their sound with more lead guitar solos. Mick Jagger runs all around stage singing constantly and often could use a breather. Keith Richards is great and an original Stone, but very few can play the hell out of the rock and blues style guitar like Jeff Beck.
    Even Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page, etc. have to give Jeff his proper respect on stage.

    Terry Bozzio probably explains it best about Beck....he plays in what Bozzio refers to as "time warped fractals"....in other words it's almost like a 16 note octive.....there are notes there that are neither A or G but closer to one of the two notes......in otherwords he's playing in a sort of pastels of musical colors and Bozzio claims he's never heard anyone else do it with such effect. Bozzio also claims that while he does it with both hands it comes primarily from his right hand.
