@@RossBarnett02 oh boy. Yeah. I would prefer to have it bound to the account. If they fear people might sell it to others, just make it a 1 seat option. That way we can be sure to have the features, if the monitor breaks and they can be sure we don’t sell it to others
Did you find it a lot sharper than the old Shinobi? Found the old one quite soft, but that maybe because mine has quite a bit of LED burn in from heavy use
@@98JamesNixon I don’t have the original Shinobi anymore to compare to, but from memory it’s not any sharper - just much brighter. I’ve always thought Atomos were the sharper of the displays though (mainly compared to my Portkeys Monitors)
nope! This "recording stopping" issue is currently only if you switch back into Monitor controls to enable/disable things like waveforms, zoom, false color, or other controls within the monitor. Changing the ISO White Balance or exposure in any way from the camera or monitor does not stop recording.
@@KashifRobinson-f2n Tilta makes it! It’s great at keeping your rig low profile with the monitor mount off the front. If you buy it from the link in the description I think I’ll make $2. Appreciate your contribution 😉
Hard to tell, it really depends on your specific needs. BUT - typically the Ninja series is designed for external recording (to codecs like ProRes RAW which I rarely will ever do). So unless you need external recording to SSD’s - I’d stick with the Shinobi.
True. I misspoke on that. It is not a 4k monitor. However, the display is so much better than my comparable portkeys 1080p monitors as far as sharpness goes. I think that has a lot to do with the UI
@@oppongk any monitor mount will work. The one I have here in this video actually came with another monitor.. but, depending on what your top handle is fitted with (hot shoe or rails) you just need a monitor mount to fit your handle.

Hey man! quick question, do you think it's possible to power the monitor via dummy battery connected to a V MOUNT, then connect the monitor via usb to the camera, so I don't have to run another dummy battery from the v mount to the camera?
Absolutely! That's exactly how I have my setup powered. D-Tap to dummy battery on the back of the Atomos Shinobi, then USB-C from the monitor to the camera with a standard camera battery in the camera. That way you only have one power cable coming out of the V-Mount and your camera stays charged all day. If you're looking to purchase - I just set up a affiliate link in the description!
If only the camera controls would work on the blackmagic cameras 😢 I ended up getting the portkeys7p, but hopefully atomos will make this work with more systems soon
I know Fuji was left out of the lineup simply because Fuji doesn't allow camera control from anyone. Wonder why blackmagic was left out? Doesn't seem very blackmagic of them to limit Atomos from camera control?
Thanks for this review.. To clarify, does it mean that you can connect a V-lock battery to the monitor then chain it to the camera via USB and the V-lock battery will power the camera through the monitor (acting as a bridge)?
@@Superjeanmarc yep! That’s exactly how I run my setup on a Smallrig V99 battery. Very convenient just having one power cable from the battery to the monitor. 🤙🏼

amzn.to/4dcRJ5p Honestly I love this thing. From the squishy handle to the angle it puts your monitor out front, to the low profile of the rig, it’s the best.
@@beretta0222 might have misspoke on that one. Resolution is 1080, but it accepts up to a 4k/30 input. Either way, the quality when viewing the screen is far superior to my Portkeys LH7P.
You'll need some way to connect it to the cage - the monitor doesn't come with a hot shoe connector or anything for mounting. Thankfully I already had several, but you'll need a monitor mount that works for your cage setup.
@@RossBarnett02 Dang already copped it before I saw this comment. The version I got actually came with a battery for it. Ill probably use your affiliate link to get the DC power adapter. Is that if I want to hook it up to my Small Rig Vmount battery?
For me, HDMI out would be nice for the rare occasions I use a monitor while sending wireless to a directors monitor. But that’s so rare for what I plan to use this monitor for.
I've had no issue with Portkeys touch-to-focus. No reason to shade a great product just because you're hyped about something new, that to be accurate has yet to produce the most requested feature. Making a point to state how Portkeys followed through on a great product from inception, continuing to communicate with users and producing updates upon requests. Those watching RUclips creators post product videos need beware of how biased reviews can be considering their relationships with brands and pandering for free products and trending views.
I get it - and you've got a fair point. But I have zero relationship with Atomos or Portkeys. I don't receive free products and have bought everything on my own (LH5PII & LH7P + Shinobi II). BUT - Portkeys touch to focus is garbage. It's slow. It's delayed. And it doesn't show a box around what object you've touched. So i'll be the first to say it's hot trash (and i'll also be the first to say it's the only monitor on the market with touch to focus for mirrorless cameras). So, if you need touch to focus, get the portkeys! But, i'm not going to tell people that it's great just to pander to a brand I don't have a relationship with. I'm just a professional in the space talking about my experienced with the products.
I am also looking for a monitor that has touch to focus, instead of using my phone to do that task, and resulting in me never looking at the actual monitor but the smaller phone screen to make sure, that the focus square is where I need it to be.. And yes, the focus subject suare is essential. How else would you know if you actually are focusing on what you want. Partially it is sonys fault, they didnt have enough foresight to make a focus square only option for the HDMI out, vs the clean or fully CLUTTERED piece of crap that also crops the image.
@SilentD1 You can be confident in what you're focusing on by using your monitors' focus-peaking tool. Sony seeks to keep certain features proprietary, as to not incur on their licensing. The same practice responsible for stunting innovation across all major corporations.
@@Chrstphr03 hm thats why some random phone app like Monitor+ has the ability to show you the focus square. So not proprietary. And I do not trust focus peeking, cause I still do not know if it focuses on the right person on the screen, before its too late. Focus peeking only shows you when one person moves away from the other, and by then its too late. I really do not need anyone's advice as to how I should use my equipment. I just ask for the features, and they can chose to make them or ignore them. No one should dictate how to use them. Especially when they (you) have no idea how I work, and what I work with. Also. Camera manufacturers invented that focus square for a reason. Pretending that its not useful is absurd.
I’ve seen this mentioned a few times, seems like they’re reserving EL zone for the more premium monitors. Thankfully I don’t use false color often enough to care.
@@RossBarnett02 understandable though since it can replace light meters during shooting day. I only use my light meter on location or technical scout and during shooting day I only use Small HD monitor (rented) with El Zone to have a consistent contrast ratio. I was hoping they'll put EL Zone on their lower end monitors so Ill just buy my own for smaller production shoots. Oh well, no choice but to go for the new Ninja.
@8:00 This is my biggest problem with Atomos... their support is terrible. I've never had a good experience and always felt like I was dealing with a very low paid overseas support person. At least with SmallHD it seems like I'm talking with someone who's had hands on the product.
After the last week I completely disagree. Maybe it's because I have a youtube video that's getting traction, but i've gotten nothing but immediate responses on a lot of my questions. After this video was posted I received a further email stating that they are working on this issue!
@@RossBarnett02 Yeah, I’d say that’s because of your RUclips Channel. I’ve had 4 or 5 Atomos monitors (still have two) and multiple support cases. It always has been a waste of time for me.
@@RossBarnett02 okey, but how it is better? Also there is a bit more expensive BM II DS series, which is brighter, has af control for sony, and wireless control for few cameras.
@@filmowaniezprofitem personally I would say the Shinobi II is better because of the image quality, responsiveness to touch controls, responsiveness to camera inputs (how fast the correct values show on the monitor when changing values). Now, I’ll say if you need wireless camera control (say for a directors monitor when working with a car rig). If you need a loop HDMI out, or if you need touch to focus, then the Lh5PII is a better buy. For the way I use this setup though, the Shinobi II is a winner.

I love my Ninja V but what i really hate is that the features you buy for the monitor are bound to the device, not your account. This is absolutely ridiculous in my opinion. If my monitor breaks, i have to buy all the features again. Why not account based, so i can get a new device and all my features are there. That really is a big minus in my opinion
@@The_Daliban true, but that sounds like another monthly subscription 😅😅
@@RossBarnett02 oh boy. Yeah. I would prefer to have it bound to the account. If they fear people might sell it to others, just make it a 1 seat option. That way we can be sure to have the features, if the monitor breaks and they can be sure we don’t sell it to others
I bought mine bc of the other video you dropped. I like mine!
Love that!
If I change the iso, exposure or white balance from my camera controls the recording is going to stop?
nope! This "recording stopping" issue is currently only if you switch back into Monitor controls to enable/disable things like waveforms, zoom, false color, or other controls within the monitor. Changing the ISO White Balance or exposure in any way from the camera or monitor does not stop recording.
@@RossBarnett02 perfect, thank you!🙏🏻
What top handle is that? Where can I buy it? Fantastic video.
@@KashifRobinson-f2n Tilta makes it! It’s great at keeping your rig low profile with the monitor mount off the front. If you buy it from the link in the description I think I’ll make $2. Appreciate your contribution 😉
So would you recommend this shinobi or the new atomos ninja ?
Hard to tell, it really depends on your specific needs. BUT - typically the Ninja series is designed for external recording (to codecs like ProRes RAW which I rarely will ever do). So unless you need external recording to SSD’s - I’d stick with the Shinobi.
Great points thank you for the point of view.
Ita not a 4k monitor its a 1080p monitor that monitors up to 4k30 i put goof..there really isnt a difference except thinness and beightness
True. I misspoke on that. It is not a 4k monitor. However, the display is so much better than my comparable portkeys 1080p monitors as far as sharpness goes. I think that has a lot to do with the UI
Hey Ross. Thanks for the insightful review. How do u connect the shinobi ii to the top handle...
@@oppongk any monitor mount will work. The one I have here in this video actually came with another monitor.. but, depending on what your top handle is fitted with (hot shoe or rails) you just need a monitor mount to fit your handle.
Hey! which battery does the monitor take?
@@MartgMedia Sony L Series batteries / There’s also a link in the description for the dummy battery I’m using for the monitor to run from my v-mount battery.
Can you see your focus areas on the monitor when in camera control mode?
@@andrewmcf96 touch to focus is not a feature. However you can see your focus by turning on focus peaking before entering camera controls on the monitor.
Hey man!
quick question, do you think it's possible to power the monitor via dummy battery connected to a V MOUNT, then connect the monitor via usb to the camera, so I don't have to run another dummy battery from the v mount to the camera?
Can you power other accessories other than your camera from the USB C?
@@hugeclap77 you can!
my lh7p automatically connects every time i turn it on . with no issue. i don’t have to do anything but turn the camera on
That's fantastic! What camera?
Touch focus will be a plus but also freeze frame would be nice
@@vitalvisualz interesting! What would you use freeze frame for? I don’t know what I would do with that.
@@RossBarnett02 mainly match cuts for unique transitions
@@vitalvisualz ohhhhh! Nice!
@@RossBarnett02 Thanks, that being said, having the recording stopping when changing a function of the monitor... is ridiculous and a no-go me... But thanks again
Oh shit... and no DC port... Double No Go.. :/ I'm thinking about the new viltrox.. but has no camera power though..
@@Superjeanmarc the recording bug will hopefully be fixed soon (according to my conversations with Atomos). I use a NP dummy battery to get DC power to the Shinobi, BUT if you’re looking for DC port + camera control check out the portkeys LH7P. Fantastic monitor, with minor issues.
@@RossBarnett02 When you say "I use a NP dummy battery to get DC power to the Shinobi" do you mean the 20 euros Battery Eliminator? That requires a non included D-Tap to DC locked connector barrel coiled cable (60 euros!) is that correct? Overall expensive and bulky accessories without the option to connect to the V-Lock battery using DC plug?
could you please say what is the boot time on this monitor?
Just set a timer and started it up! I’m getting approximately 10 seconds every time.
Hello, nice review, can u pls send me a link of your top handle? it look realy nice, but i dont know how i can finde one like yours, THX
amzn.to/4dcRJ5p
Honestly I love this thing. From the squishy handle to the angle it puts your monitor out front, to the low profile of the rig, it’s the best.
Did I hear you say this a 4k monitor? The resolution is 1080p. Anyway good review. I am getting mine on Monday.
@@beretta0222 might have misspoke on that one. Resolution is 1080, but it accepts up to a 4k/30 input.
Either way, the quality when viewing the screen is far superior to my Portkeys LH7P.
Novel….shinobi 2 and Viltrox de x3?
I haven’t worked with the viltrox yet!
In 6 days you fell in love... Epic.
what can I say, I fall in love quick.
This is probably a dumb question but do I need anything to attach it to my Kondor Blue camera cage for my gh6? About to purchase this monitor.
You'll need some way to connect it to the cage - the monitor doesn't come with a hot shoe connector or anything for mounting. Thankfully I already had several, but you'll need a monitor mount that works for your cage setup.
@@RossBarnett02 thanks I think I saw Kondor blue has a monitor mount. Will be my first monitor. Can’t wait to get it !
@@rogerdatfilms epic! Just updated the product description with an affiliate link. Would love if you could purchase through that link.
@@RossBarnett02 Dang already copped it before I saw this comment. The version I got actually came with a battery for it. Ill probably use your affiliate link to get the DC power adapter. Is that if I want to hook it up to my Small Rig Vmount battery?
@@rogerdatfilms YEP - DC adapters are good for all sorts of use cases, but the main one is powering from a V-Mount battery.
what's your v mount battery?
SmallRig v99! For my wedding day rig like this I typically use 1.5-2 batteries for a full 12 hour day.
If it has a HDMI out would be awesome, quite don't understand
@SilentD1 Cool. You're welcome to fight for your limitations.
I wish this has EL Zone instead of the regular False Color...
Try PortKeys LH5P, it is a little bit cheaper, but has the same features.
Also BM5 II
@@filmowaniezprofitem I own the LH5P II. It’s similar to the LH7P. If you’re buying new the Shinobi II is 10x better and $50 cheaper.
@RossBarnett02 thanks for explaining. Those are things that cannot be checked without having booth.
150$ cheaper with 4k unlike Atomos ninja phone haha, what are they thinking with that thing
@@nogoodnecktie12 I’ve never been a fan of using a phone for something dedicated on set. I’ve gotta use my phone for other things. But I agree, this is a better budget buy for sure!
