I hate the on-off button on all their products. But I went for the Shinobi II because of the potential like touch to focus. Thanks for the super nice review Chris.
I purchased a few weeks ago, my first external monitor for my A7iv. Very impressed with it so far and very handy with my anamorphic lenses and shooting with phantom LUTS. Those small rig batteries are out of stock everywhere right now though!
@@kylemckenna I uploaded the standard Phantom Luts and they work just fine. I managed to get the small rig battery in the end, they came back in stock. I went for a bright orange one, why not!
Pretty stoked on this concept. The Ninja is great but the extra weight was usually overkill. If they add touch tracking for AF for all the cameras I use, I’ll probably grab one. Looks like a good solution, depending on how efficient they are with smaller batteries.
Great job on the video Chris! Thanks for making it. Once I finally started using an external monitor, I don't know how I lived without it. I'm currently using a Ninja5 (or my Xperia phone) and my only real complaint is that since I'm a big believer in capturing audio on-camera, the fan noise from the Ninja is always picked up by the shotgun mic. Not a problem for my wireless or boomed mics, but annoying whenever I want to just use a forward-facing mic. I am very intrigued by the power sharing abilities of this monitor, and the lack of a noisy fan does appeal to me.
Nice that it charges the camera battery, I could use my v-mount with D-tap to NPF dummy to charge the monitor. And use usb-c for camera control/camera power. If they fix the autofocus it's a no-brainer 👌🏻
actually you cant. i mean you wont be able to charge the internal battery of your camera while using it. thats what i thought and what i did, but the usb c out is only 13w output so its not outputing enough juice to keep your camera on and it uses the internal battery instead… so no point other than control. As i said… i’ve tried…. failed.
@@SmartVideoBE Could you elaborate? There was absolutely no power draw from Camera and it purely used internal battery? Which camera did you try this with? Thanks.
I love mine! Paired with the battery eliminator, leads to a very nice and light cable managed setup. The monitor has even taken away my need for a second Dtap cable. The clean setup comes with the price of a few less features, but the camera control sold it for me. This really wasn't released to replace your old atomos, but simply to offer an upgrade from the previous model. I'm looking forward to the touch focus update coming soon.
Chris, what would be amazing is if you did an up to date video. There has been a lot of people complaining about overheating issues. Would be good to have your honest review on this topic. I personally have also had issues not being able to update the firmware of my monitor. I’m on the brink of returning it.
So after 4 months of use im having some issues with it, can't seem to get it to power on via dummy battery from D-tap at all, even though thats how ive been using it this whole time. Anyone got any suggestions?
That's what I'm waiting on. Atomos officially announced touch to focus update a few weeks ago at IBC 2024. Said they will announce its release on it's Instagram page.
If it has a brighter output, touch tracking autofocus, custom function buttons, and metal outer construction with mounting points on all four sides instead of just the top and bottom, I'd buy it immediately.
I just returned mine. Which sucks because in nearly every way it’s a substantial improvement over the previous generation. The screen size is very small because of those damn bezels: I returned mine because despite being a compatible camera I could never get mine to start or stop recording, change the shutter. I tried updating the software multiple times and I never got the monitor to update. Maybe in 6 months these bugs will be fixed
I really want to purchase the Shinobi 2, but I film in 4k @ 60fps fairly often for surfing. I understand the screen will not show 4k @ 60fps, but can I still use it? Will the Shinobi 2 display it at 30fps while the Canon R6 records in 4k @ 60fps? The Ninja states it is able to do that, but there is a big price difference.
New firmware is out. AtomOS 11.02.00 - Introduction of Touch to Focus, Fujifilm and Nikon camera control support, Introduction of a dedicated shutter release button (Photo mode), and Implementation of Arri False Color and EL Zone
at 16:25 what is that orange icon in the top right? showing on mine too and want to turn off and be sure it's not an error. One more bug - if you turn on the monitor and trigger record from the camera, before entering camera control, there's no red box on monitor. I ghost recorded half a wedding portrait session because of this. Also I hope they add the fstop on screen when using aperture ring soon! Thanks for video!
Very detailed and clear as usual Chris, thanks. There is one thing though that I wish you had tested in your review, it is the option to use the monitor as a “bridge” when powering the camera via a V-Lock battery.. I always power my FX3 via USB-c from a V-lock as I don’t want to have an NPF attached to the back of the monitor. (Also want to use only one type of battery for the entire rig). I heard that there might be a power drain.. meaning that despite having the monitor connected with PD to the camera, the internal Battery of the FX3 still slowly depletes … can you test and report? Thanks again !
One problem that has come up - The power draw when shooting 4k 120 is too much for the passthrough. My FX3 internal battery drains over the 50 odd minutes I am shooting a soccer game.
hi chris can show fx3 setup with atmos ninjav v+ and basic rig setup...i want to buy that but want a guide before...if have time will be very helpfull for us
Hi Chris, thanks for this review. I have a question regarding ways to power. Could you: Power and control the camera via the USBC port. Supply the power from a NPF-DUMMY to D-tap plugged into a V-MOUNT. Inside the camera I would have a NP-FZ100 just in case. Would that work, and you'd get full camera control + power? Cheers dude!
Does it have the new EL zone false colour included ? It looks great to be that thin but honestly the Port Keys one that also does camera control looks better imo
I got one couple days ago and it's great - I like the product overall but the lcd panel itself seems pretty low quality. It smudges and sort of lags when I move the camera, it's like it has a really slow response time? Like LCD's from 2004. It's not that sharp and the colour seems sort of 8bit, it doesnt handle gradients at all well. I had a SmallHD before which was leagues better. (Canon R5C)
I had purchased this on launch when I saw their promo video using a R5C. Immediately returned it when I tried the monitor. No USB C PD out, no camera control support after they showed it was possible in their promo video, camera data on the screen was completely inaccurate.
quite frustrating that the thinness is causing heat issues because I don't know a single person who said "You know I love this monitor but I wish it was thinner!"
