OK so let me just say despite your thought that you had no idea what you were doing or that your method were how shall I say backwoods, I'll disagree with you on these points. Your video saved me from having to pay someone else to do this for me, as I am old lady and while I use to do many things and use to be very handy I have not done many of these types of things in some time. I have paid someone else to do it for several years now. HOWEVER: You video actually was good enough to save me over $1000 bucks, dealer wanted $1200 dollars to install rails on my Honda 2018 CRV. I paid $140 for the rails on Amazon and with your video and the instructions that came with was able to get them installed by myself so Great Big THANK YOU!!! (yours is only one I could find too, so glad yours helped)
Glad to hear I was able to help you save money! I didn't think many people would run across this video when I made it, it's great to know this nonchalant video filmed on a phone has benefitted so many people!
Well done young man. I find your video not only educational but also entertaining. Janky, a little here and there but, the job got done. I'm going to go install mine on my 2021 now. Thank you for this video!
Great job ArcadianWarrior! You give new meaning and professionalism to the term 'shadetree mechanic'. Your directions are clear and easy to follow and I really appreciate the simplicity of your approach.
ArcadianWarrior Great video... from looking at the covers on a 2019 CRV LX, there's no way to understand how to install luggage racks and Honda doesnt want one to know, so they can charge $500-$1000 for their lobor to install!!! You made it easy for all of us DIYers to save money!! Kudos and thanks!!!
Thanks Warrior. Like you, I have modest skills and the desire not to spend too much hard earned money. Honestly, after reading the written instructions - I was feeling a little intimidated. But after watching your video, I'm feeling more confident about my prospects. Much appreciated.
Appreciated your video. I’ll be installing roof rails and crossbars on my mother in law’s CRV so I can get her out of my house. Your video is going to make that sooo much easier! Thanks
This video saved me HUNDREDS of $. I was about to take my wifes 2019 CRV back to the dealer for the $700 roof rack (not sure if that includes labor!). I found a 4 piece sysrtem (2 rails and 2 crossbars) on ebay for under $200, but had no idea if I could install it. After watching this video I took the leap. It only took my about 90 minutes to install and it looks like it came with the car. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THE VIDEO.
Dealership prices are absolutely insane, so I wouldn't be surprised if that quote of $700 was without labor (I just checked online and the parts themselves from the dealership totaled $650, yikes). Glad to know I was able to help out!
Good for you! I found your video informative and entertaining. I hope it all worked out for you. Not sure I can handle doing this myself - I might just put my kayaks on some cushion blocks placed right on the roof. But if I decide to try this myself, I’ll watch your video a few more times. Thanks for posting!
Great video. Installed roof rails on my 2022 CRV today. Thanks for the detailed video. With your help, I was able to install with confidence. Thanks again.
Thanks for making this video. I just need to remove the plastic rails to clean underneath them because the weather in FL really promotes mold growth that needs to be removed. Based on what you showed, I think I can remove the rails, clean everything and reinstall the rails as long as I am careful. I wouldn't have wanted to try that without knowing how those clips work. So, thank you very much!
Yo thanks for the video man! I was super nervous cutting my molding since it had a metal strip. While it wasn't the cleanest, it's all covered up and your video gave me the confidence to try it!
Thanks for the video. I was a little nervous, but I thought if this guy is using a fork and an angle grinder, I'm think I can give it a try. Not removing those back plastic pieces and the fasteners along the window was key. Used a hacksaw. Took about 45 minutes with a three year old running around with my tools.
Happy to hear it was successful! That's what I was hoping for, if someone like me with minimal car knowledge could do it I knew I could save plenty of people hundreds of dollars!
Love your ingenuity! And good tip about not touching the front clips. Obviously, there is no Harbor Freight near you or you would have used this job as an excuse to load up on a bunch of stuff you'll probably only use once.
DJ O it went good! I used a saw saw with a piece of wood under it. It still didnt grab right away so i scratched up the metal piece but the rail covered it up. Overall easy. This video did help.
Thanks for the video....and you are correct, it is easy to do...just take your time and have the right tools and you shouldnt have a problem. I recommend to make sure you use lock tight...low strength should be fine and will let you remove the rack if you ever decided to for some strange reason. I used an oscillating tool with a bi metal cutting blade to cut the trim (Harbor Freight $20 for the tool and about another $10 for the blade which you will probably need to throw away after using it because the trim does grind down the blade)....I find oscillating tools are easier to control than other cutters. Just put a thick blanked down on your roof and support the trim piece like ArcadianWarrior showed and you will be fine. The thing that took me the longest was installing the cross rails, you might have to loosen up the screws to adjust the width. I would advise removing the 4 width adjusting screws (8 total) and adding lock tight to them. Be careful threading the cross rails to the side rails so you dont cross thread them and keep something under the area while you are are screwing them in so you dont scratch the finish. Make sure to have good bits...the screws arent the toughest so good bits will help keep from stripping them. I needed two sizes/types of bits and I only received an allen key that fit one size...while at HF getting the oscillating tool take an example of each screw and find the tools you need.
Unfortunately I traded in the CRV for a 4runner and no longer have this vehicle. But I checked out some of my old photos and it seems like the back of the rails were just a few inches within the tailgate so it is pretty long.
Awesome video! After watching you now I believe I can do this too. Your thought process is a lot like mine. I think I will use a hack saw instead of the saw you used
Yes those were aftermarket. My understanding is that the one noticeable difference is that aftermarket rails don't sit as flush with the vehicle than genuine parts, so it's the kind of difference you'll be aware of up close or as the owner of the vehicle.
Both are aftermarket parts I got off Amazon. The distance between the cross bars from what I remember is 25-27 inches. However, I no longer have this vehicle so I could be wrong.
Great video thanks for taking the time. Only advice I would give is don’t use a drill to tighten plastic stuff especially in a tight location if you strip the head of the screw it could turn into a nightmare
I got mine from Amazon in the link in the description but I just checked and currently they're sold out. I would keep an eye on Amazon to see when they restock but worse comes to worse you could buy the parts from the dealer and install them (although dealership prices will be ridiculous just for parts). Hopefully they restock soon!
after a year of using the aftermarket roof rail, i found a bit of an issue with my rails. it tends to warp when expose to the hot outdoor. THe front rail tend to buckle and a gap could be seen between the rail and roof. did you experience any of this. I plan to redo it by maybe add a flat bar in the front rail to make it rigid.
You know, I have noticed a bit of a gap.But I feel like if I was to take the rails off completely and carefully screw them back in it would stay flush with the vehicle. I haven't noticed any warping though, and I live in Texas so we have some crazy heat down here.
I didn't use correct terminology but if you check out 3:20 in the video, I'm basically measuring from where the plastic section after the front window starts. Just pause the video if need be, sorry for any lack of clarity, like I said, not a professional at this haha.
The fact that my brother chose to give me that out of all the tools he had is still a wild concept to me. I know he must have had something simpler haha. Thanks!
Hello, did you experience rust or leak problem? I ordered mine from ebay, they only offer 2 years of warranty, wonder if i will run with any future problems. Thank you!
I only owned this vehicle for a year and a half, but in the time I owned it I did not experience any rust or leak issues in regard to installing roof rails.
Hey how have these been holding up? The reviews for the roof rails on Amazon are mixed, and I'm thinking about buying...an update from about yours would be great :) Thoroughly enjoyed your video! I'll definitely be using it no matter what rails I end up with.
I traded in my CRV for a 4Runner about a year ago, but I never had an issue with them the time I did owe them. Sometimes there's nothing like OEM though, so if these aftermarket rails seem questionable based on reviews you could always get OEM rails or go with a different aftermarket brand and follow the same instructions!
That's what I was worried about but so far I haven't heard anything after my personal install. A lot of what I researched online said that if whistling does occur, you can by some type of wind block for a vehicle or I've heard of people using nylon rope to wrap around the bars to break the wind up.
same with mine. i plastidip my aftermarket roof rail with anthracite grey. however after a yeare redid the plasti dip to add gloss to it by using plastidip glossifier.
It might be an annoyance but I would take them off and reinstall them. Even I had a hard time getting those bolts perfectly aligned to fit on my vehicle and I had to take some time until I got the desired tightness from them. Instead of struggling to get a bolt or two tight it may work out better to just take em all off and try putting them on again would be my guess.
Anyone know where to get those bolts from? I ordered an aftermarket rail on amazon and it came with something totally different. I'm scared if I use them the entire thing will fly off of the roof. Appreciate any help!
same here. i bought mine in amazon and the rail arrive with no torx screws. i took a sample photo of the screws and send it to the vendor and they ship me a set of torx screws. since this torx screws are cheap copies, try to rethread them since the inner thread seems to be bad and tightening the screw sometimes lead to stripping the upper thread - it seems if you do not rethread the screws it seems to stop or bump into the bad thread and would tend not to go through all through the bottom. i stripped the thread of one screw because of this
It can be a bit intimidating but there's no rush. The only part to be really careful with is lifting up the closer you get to the front of your vehicle since those clips need to stay intact.
I'm not sure exactly which piece you're referring to, but, if it's something that was originally part of the vehicle I'd do this: Take the broken piece to the dealership and find out what it's called. See if you can find it online for cheaper than what the dealership has it for. Worse comes to worse, buy the piece from the dealership and replace it yourself. Last resort would be to have them fix it.
The instructions I read came in the box but I'm betting there are online PDFs of install. And yikes! I mean on the bright side OEMs are guaranteed to have a flawless fit, but the prices are definitely absurd.
Thank you! Using the saw was definitely the thing I was most reluctant to do. You can buy Plasti Dip at Home Depot or Walmart or even online! It comes in a can for about $6.00.
i bought mine at dipyourcar.com. i recommend adding the glossifier - it will add gloss to your rail. but you need to watch youtube how its done properly. my first plastidip was not good. i redid it still about 85-90% good. issue sometimes are blobs of dip sometimes ruin the finish
Arrggg - Thanks for this video dude, I seriously appreciate it. My only concern is the quality of these aftermarket rails + crossbars. Have you noticed any issues (build quality, design, etc)? I'm not excited to buy the OEM rails + cross-bar but I'm kinda tempted to. This car parts arena seems like such a racket. Anywhhooo thanks!
No problem man! If you can afford a little extra on OEM rails, it might be worth it. The aftermarket rails don't sit quite as tight as I'd like, however, I question if that's just a matter of me going back and retightening them. However, the cross bars are great and I don't see the point in getting OEM crossbars.
This was absolutely fantastic. Your lack of confidence is hilarious and really relatable. So great. Thank you!

@@SteelSongbird probably. It's about a 6 inch hacksaw, just bought generic blades. The roof strip has a thin piece of aluminum in it.

Thank you!
would be much better if you recorded in landscape. Would be able to see much more.
Completely agree.
Great video! I think I can do it now
