Wide angle lens for video shooters
The 13mm F1.4 super wide angle lens from Viltrox just slipped into my lens collection. At first I was afraid that I made a mistake buying this lens. I didn't like shooting with it at all. But practice makes improvements and I soon started enjoying the wider field of view and the new types of cool shots it allowed me to get.
We'll take a look at Auto focus performance on with the Sony FX30
Along with it's impressive focus breathing - or lack there off.
Tips on how to compose and frame with this lens.
And we can't shoot this wide without cropping a few of our shots to the cinematic 2.39x1 aspect ratio.

Good review Thomas. Everyone talks about the Sigma Trio, but I went with the Viltrox Trio 13mm, 23mm, and 56mm, all f/1.4, and couldn't be happier. Just WISH that Viltrox 75mm, f/1.2 for Sony would come quicker. Got a preorder in and will see.
True, haven't tried the Sigmas, bet they're great lenses. But I've been really happy with Viltrox so...
How do you like the 56mm?
@@ThomasFransson I do like the 56mm and think it is a good value (think I only paid like $250 with either some credit I had or on a sale). Of the three, I think it isn't as good as the 13mm and the 23mm -I use both on the regular. On the 56mm I struggled with anomalies wide open so often start around f/1.8, but really like it more in the 2.8 to 8 range to get better sharpness. I dunno, just doesn't feel like it shoots at the same quality and I am still tempted to try a Sigma there, which I haven't personally used yet. Again, the Viltrox comes of as a value with caveats in 56mm, where the 13mm and 23mm I think are just excellent outright.

I'll hold my horses on that one for a little bit more then. I do like being able to shoot wide open, for the extra light at times when needed and for subject separation obviously ;)
Thank you Thomas for this great video. You actually covered those points which I can't find anywhere else like keeping distance in front of subject and also in background too while filming outdoors in real world.
Now, I'm having one request. Please, make a video comparing viltrox 13mm f1.4 with cheap Sony kit lens 16-50mm for focal lenghts. These two lenses will be a light weight combo for whole day video shooting and photography with low light and travel in mind. Thank you once again .This video is valuable🙏.

Hey. What ND filter are you using on your viltrox wide angle lens? I heard there is an issue of vignetting when using ND filter on WA lens, and the solution is to use a filter of larger diameter... I'm hesitating to get urth VND 67 mm which stated as appropriate for WA lens or get 77mm or even 82 mm VND filter to couple with viltrox 13mm f1.4 lens. Thanks for your feedback❤
That's true. I'm using 82mm filters for everything with threads bigger than 58mm.
It also depends on what filter you're using. Some cause more vignetting than others. I've not used any filters from urth so I can't say much about them.
In the video I'm using a Cokin Nuances 2-400 vnd. Most people prefer filters with hard stops though.

That was really under exposed. Shot at ISO instead of 2500
I tried to get a couple of final shots done before I went back home. This was probably the very last.
