      @@-grey I’ve seen in reviews that certain lenses have nice smooth roll off, the 56 1.2 for example I think, and they say it like it’s a good thing. Is it just personal preference?

    • @-grey
      @-grey 2 года назад +1

      @@b3arodactyl Yes. Smooth roll off looks high quality to me. Fast roll off looks like a cheap planar lens to me. It is one of those things that falls under "character vs clinical". A lot of people like character because it feels like a time, communicates an ambiance. This is why big movie productions will purposely mess up high quality lenses to get swirly bokeh, fast fall off, or vignetting. It feels more authentic, like the film days.

  • @dude157
    @dude157 Год назад +12

    If you stop the viltrox down to f2 it has the 3D pop, and the colour saturation and contrast is excellent to rival anything at that focal length. I think you lose a bit of pop at f1.4 because it's difficult to make a fast wide prime that is sharp wide open, while simultaneously retaining the micro tonal contrast (pop). I really like to use the Viltrox at f2.4, I think that is its sweetspot.

    The smaller the sensor the less pop there will be. Go check 6x7 medium format photos and your mind will blow off. It s a matter of having more compression for the same focal lenght ;)
    Ie: mamiya/pentax 100mm is equiv to 50mm on ff, but still have the 100mm compression.
    For some reasons, leica and zeiss can bring some of that to ff because of their lesser element count constructions and bokeh transtion.

    Viltrox seems the better option, the lack of "3D" is mostly the corrected distortion, if you distort it a tiny bit and illuminate appropiately it will do it plus it's faster which is always better.
    Also some old lenses with tons of elements can pop because they did not distort correct, it's all about lighting and it is a skill to reach for it and see it.

    • @50shadesofNV
      @50shadesofNV 2 года назад +6

      lots of zeiss, voight, leica lenses have MAD FIELD CURVATURE with midframe and/or edges taking a back seat to center so boom that's where the pop is, but they suck for landscape and architecture, good for portraits

    • @bearbearingston7696
      @bearbearingston7696 2 года назад

      @@50shadesofNV Well said although i would say some do have both "pop" and lack of massive distortion, for example the 105mm 2.5 Nikkor with the Double Gauss design. Corners are okayish for an old lens but midframe and center are good, blur quality in both fore and background is excellent and distortion is pretty small, you can shoot verticals no problem although not saying much in a telephoto. The Tokina 90mm 2.5 is also similar one but that one has even less distortion, you can scan with it too.
      The problem is a good popping wide angle lens, the Zeiss 21mm Distagon is a great lens albeit pretty expensive for what it is and that's about it, the 35mm Nikkors are not quite as decent but i've heard good things of the 24mm Canon EF lenses.

It seems to me that the images without 3D pop feel as though they have a quite square-edged depth of field and the unfocussed areas seem uniformly out of focus. Maybe stopping down the 1.4 to f/2.0 would be the sweet spot. And also, the warm colors of the Zeiss are probably inaccurate, but more pleasing.

    "3D pop" is simply the added feeling of dimensionality. To get that feeling you need an exceptionally sharp lens and sufficient depth of field. How the scene is staged will also matter too as you prefferably want as much front to back sharpness as possible throughout the image. This is probably easier with photos. But I imagine if you also added further seperation through lighting you could achieve a similar effect. Finaly compression will also ruin this effect.

      Tamron was very sharp and had 2.8 and had less 3D pop than 16-35 zeiss

    As a looser, hobo photographer, I will never understand 3-D pop. That being said, I'd be curious if you find pop in the Fuji 18mm f/1.4. I know its a little tight for vloging, but I would be curious to see a "Pop Study" on this lens.

    Is this 4k SDI, 3,840 vertical lines, and 2,160 horizontal lines?

    At first I thought I liked the Zeiss better, but I don't think so. It makes everything orange. My big decision is xf 14/2.8 or Viltrox 13mm. I want the small size, but also the faster lens...lol.

    I use a Nikon Z62 with the 24-70 F/4 kit lens and I was wondering if you could recommend a filter for using it as a webcam/teleconference camera. I have South and West facing windows in my home office, and I also have a fishtank with a very blue light. Thanks so much for your channels, you make me happy! I also bought a tripod using your link and code. Also, if your suggestion is to get a real lens like the NIKKOR Z 20mm f/1.8 S and you just happened to have an affiliate link "in the description below" when you include this comment in your next answering scrub photographers questions video, I just might have to pick it up.

    Ever since I got my H2 I can’t put it down. The digital teleconverter feature is killer and you can use it on video. It’s truly an amazing camera.
    The Viltrox 13 is the GOAT super wide angle lens for Fuji. It looks gorgeous.

    I shoot corporate and non-profit documentaries. Do you think the xt4 or xh2s autofocus are usable for run and gun broll / doc shooting? What lenses would you pair?
