    I’ve been following the progress of this lens for at least a couple years now. Glad to see it getting close to the finish line!
    I have a pair of Skyllaney restoration/conversions, one being a c. 1938 4cm f/2 Sonnar made for the original Tenax camera system. Very good contrast and punchy color for an uncoated lens, and just fabulous in b&w.
    Brian S. is indeed The Man when it comes to Sonnars.

    Matt, thankyou for the excellent and thorough review. The story behind making this lens a reality, especially during Covid, is one of perseverance and dedication to Ludwig Bertele and to putting Great Britain back on the map for producing lenses for cameras again. It was an honor to correspond with Chris while he brought his dream to a reality. I "tinker" with camera lenses. Chris is the expert.
    Which Sonnar is my favorite. Which wine is your favorite- same answer, the one that best fits the mood and situation. The Bertele is the best made, best machined, and best mechanical design of all Sonnars . Chris uses a special RF cam to maintain focus from 0.7m to infinity, accounts for a secondary shift in focus when used close-up. The Bertele is optimized for wide-open use, as I do with mine. Looking closely at the "indexed cam" of the lens you will see cuts in the metal that maintain perfect focus across range. You cannot do that with a straight cam. My Bertele Sonnar is on the M9, I have other Leicas for the other lenses.
    I have several Zeiss Opton 50/1.5 Sonnars, will be getting one of them back from Chris soon. I use an Amedeo adapter with them for the M-Mount camera. The later Carl Zeiss 50mm F1.5 Sonnars used an early synthetic cement that often fails. Be wary of "Newton's Rings" with them. Early Opton Sonnar lenses use Canada Balsam, not subject to failing like the later ones. I do find more sample-to-sample variation in them. Get a great one, keep it.
    I do not have a Tanack 5cm F1.5 Sonnar formula lens. I have the others.

      Hi Brian! Sorry the video took so long to make and I'm glad you spotted it. Probably not as in depth or conclusive as you may have hoped but equally it should bring new eyes to the amazing Bertele project.

    It is good to see this Bertele project reach completion. The number being limited to ten means that I will never be a lucky owner, but, I am glad to know that such a lens exists. I do have a Leica-R 50mm Summicron, converted to M-mount by Skyllaney, so, am acquainted with the quality of the work.

    The man is as good as his word. ;o) The Skyllaney Bertele reviewed! You know that I have been looking forward to your opinions on this one as I am the lucky owner of one and like it a lot. Mine was one of five pre-production units. It has no serial number. And Brian fine-tuned it when it got to this side of the Atlantic. Something happened in shipping. I am partial to Sonnars and this version has edible color.
    I would hope that Chris at Skyllaney can gear up and start producing this lens in quantity. From what I have read he and Brian have solved the previous Bertele design problems. OK, now I will watch the review.
    LATER
    OK, great review. I cannot say which is best. That is a Sophie's Choice. I do have a 1941 CZJ 5cm f/1.5 that Brian has made right. It, too, is a nice lens. And my '57 KMZ J8 is very good. Which is best? I honestly favor the Bertele for its saturated color and IQ. It takes it up to 11. For me it has that little extra something. For softer I go with my J8 and still softer with my CZJ. I have to test them side by side just to see.
    Thanks again for another great review. I have no idea how you find the time to do all the things you do but am grateful for them.

      Thanks Sandy, I did promise! (After my old computer died I had to get the files off that then goes through them all any trying to work out what I shot with each lens, find any video footage and then bit by bit piece a video together.. hence I put it off for so long!). Glad to finally tick it off my list.

    Nice to see more on Sonnars. I am a big fan of this lens design. I have owned and tried two pre-war Zeiss f2s, a post-war CZJ 1.5, a 1954 or so Opton 1.5, and abt a dozen Jupiters f2. My findings: My best Jupiter is from 1959 and beats the pre-war Zeiss lenses in every respect. Of the two 1.5s I kept the Opton which is easily the best 50 Sonnar in my collection. Also tested the Zeiss-Cosina Sonnar. It does deliver the typical look but with a rather modern interpretation. Judging from your pictures, the "Bertele" looks fine but I doubt whether I'll lay ou the money for it.

    Love those videos with vintage lenses.
    I like Shay as a model cause she is an interesting person to shoot and I would not so much use her in a some sort of beauty pose but go wild with her with props an d what not.
    Comment on the SL, with vintage lenses (and I would say older than about 20 years, you are better of with a low MP count camera, 24 MP at the most to get the best results.
    Now with the SL3 coming next spring, and probably with the same sensor as the M11 and Q3 with the option of pixel binning it would be great to see how they perform in the Low MP 18 MP.
    They should perform so much better than the high MP sensors.
    Anyways, thanks for sharing and have a great week

    Although I appreciate the new lens and all the work put into it (and if someone gave me one I wouldn't turn it down😊), I’m still very happy with my pre-war Ziess single blue coated 5cm f1.5 Sonnar. Very sharp in the center even wide open, has that curvature of field which adds a creative element, bokeh can be magic, contrast and color is good without being over-the-top ‘modern’ for a true and pleasing vintage look. All these Sonnar lenses are fun to use. The new Skyllaney does make it a lot easier; looking for a good copy, close focus, and just being new. BTW, my favorite normal Sonnar on the SL…, the 1957 58mm f2 ‘Sonnar’ Takumar. Like the slightly longer focal length (the shortest Sonnar for SLR ever made), .6m minimum focus, has that Sonnar magic, like the 2-ring pre-set aperture, light and compact with excellent built quality. Maybe not the easiest vintage lens to find, but they are out there, and prices can be a bargain compared to these.

    It was just the day before yesterday that I suggested a lens comparison of sonnar normal lenses and here you are, Matt. I'm SO GLAD that Skyllaney is making this lens. I do hope they will go into regular production so that I might own one. I see that you chose to compare only European examples in this video, but I remain curious as to how well our Nikkor 50mm/2 in LTM or S-mount compare. No doubt the Skyllaney will win with its modern coatings, but curiosity remains. Also, could you speak more about the focus shift issue? How big of an issue is it really in real-world photography. My guess is that it's an issue when focusing 'close', but how 'close' is 'close'? Cheers, Mate!

    • @MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom
      @MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom  7 месяцев назад

      Thanks Chris, yes sorry this has been on my todo list since I tested them in July! Yes maybe I'll test my Nikkors head to head next year. (Nikkors win on paper FYI which is which the SC 1.4 is so damn amazing.. it's an over-optimised Opton design I'm told ..on steroids. That holds true from my results. Focus shift is only an issue with RF cameras.

  • @jlwilliams
    @jlwilliams 7 месяцев назад +2

    I agree it's nice the Scots have made this lens, but I would still pick the 50mm f/1.5 Opton-Sonnar of all the choices shown. The "Opton" prefix tells you that these post-World-War-II lenses originated from the West German Zeiss works in Stuttgart, whereas the original Carl Zeiss plant in Jena had wound up in the Soviet-controlled Eastern Zone; politics aside, there's no question that the West German team had access to better materials, finishing methods, and (probably) quality control. Based on my admittedly limited experience, the Optons are better-looking, more consistent, and nicer to use than either the prewar lenses or the postwar East German "C.Z. Jena" lenses. For me, the Opton 50/1.5 is an ideal blend of just enough "vintage character" plus just enough modern technology to produce images that are atmospheric but not mushy or uselessly unpredictable. Based on Matt's samples, I'd say even the modern Bertele doesn't quite reach the same level of excellence; the Opton 50/1.5 is just a very tough act to follow!

    • @MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom
      @MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom  7 месяцев назад

      Thanks James and great conclusion. It is 100% true that the Bertele is designed to "fall short" of the Opton to get the most from the old design. I think the Opton offers fantastic value for money and is one of my highest performing vintage lenses.

The point of the video was some Voigtlander lenses are optically very good so I sold some Leica to get those. I still use all Leica cameras (many, film and digital, all systems III, R, M, CL, SL, Q, and digital M). I still use many Leica lenses too but also other brands. This channel is to review every Leica related product to help people when deciding what to get. The MrLeica.com blog does the same in written format.
