God bless those young mechanics. I had a good chuckle once when a spick & span guy at a chain repair shop tell me that my power steering fluid was leaking. He ignored all my attempts to tell him that it couldn't be the case - he even called his buddy over, an even newer guy fresh out of technical school, to point out the same fact. Wasn't until the owner walked over & he had a good chuckle too. The car in question was a '77 Corolla, with no power steering.

@CHARLES FORTE we definitely are a dying breed unfortunately. I left the shop I worked at for 5-6 years because at the time I was making $12. 50/hr while I was profiting the owner $1,500-2,000/hr and started doing work out of my personal house garage, having people pay for the parts with me in person up front for the parts discounts I've acquired over the years, and for pennies on the dollar in regards to labor, and always make enough to survive relatively comfortably without causing folks to take a second mortgage out on their homes to pay for repairs. There needs to be a level of balance, and unfortunately far too many shops and dealerships charge you your first born for simple things like drive belts, wheel bearings and brake jobs. It's sickening from my point of view, especially when you see the mark-ups these places are charging.

I had a mechanic tell me my car stalling out when stopped was the fuel pump. He never checked a code at all. He immediately jumped to the most expensive thing.
I took it to O'Reilly and they put a computer on it and look at that! A code... That the mechanic reset intentionally with his computer.
It was a IAC valve that was leaking some air. 84 bucks and 5 minutes later no code runs great. That mechanic wanted 2k for the pump replacement. It's an outback... Scammers work in every field but sadly mechanics in my state of Virginia can just call the police and report your car as a "moving violation after inspection" to blackmail the customers.
Buy a computer and give those guys the finger.

I had a similar issue with tunex. A friend recommended that location because of a tech they knew. They fixed my original issue, but the car broke down on the way home. I took it back, but after week or so they couldn’t figure it out, so they wanted to replace the computer. Seems like an odd fix for something that worked and just died out of the blue - No smoke, no rain, etc. I decided to have it towed to the dealership. It cost me a penny, but they found the timing belt had slipped and had it fixed up within a day.
Don’t be afraid to get a second opinion. Trust your gut.

The only time I’ve ever been upsold on anything is the last time I got tires. Set of tires were $800, they wanted to sell me tire pressure sensors because one was out and I said yes because why not? But also, on my car at least (2010 Lincoln MKZ for those wondering), it’s very difficult if not impossible to find out which sensor was out; I even hooked up an expensive shop grade scanner and along with help from a guy who is a very experienced mechanic, we couldn’t find it. So that was an extra $300. I also bought a full size spare wheel for i think $60, it all added up to about $1,400.

Here are other scams I have personally witnessed while working at dealerships:
employees hoarding extra transmitters then selling and reprogramming them to
other customers for cash, a parts guy hiding a Nissan 370Z wheel in a storage room and offering to sell it to a service customer out the back door, a thieving mechanic who got caught trying to steal a brand new Nissan Altima engine that was ordered for a customer during a time when Nissan was replacing their 4 cylinder engines for an oil problem.
The first activity of this sort I saw was at a Mazda dealer also in S. Florida....
a couple of the more savvy techs would actually go into an area where the filing cabinets were and pull old repair orders and have new ones written usually to replace a bad transmission. Of course it was all bogus but the tech still got paid (until he got caught). Had to have had help from accommodating service writers, and parts countermen.
A dealership is only as good as the honesty and integrity of it's employees.

I’d been going to my local garage here in the UK for about 2 years, spent multiple thousands on my car….I trusted them (a self confessed “Christian family business”) all seemed like really friendly legit guys.
However when I got a bill for £500- £700 on a “failed mot” for inner track rods, tie rod ends and a steering linkage ball joint I knew that can’t be right.
A different garage got the car through MOT for £90 with only 2 advisories and went as far to say that my local garage had failed me incorrectly and their explanation of the failure didn’t even make sense.
NEVER just go with it if you’re not sure, always get a second opinion folks 👍
Plenty of even the nicest seeming people will hamstrung customers who aren’t mechanically savvy.

Tue Aamco in Killeen, Texas worked on my friend's Dodge Grand caravan... The transmission was going out. We discovered that the overweight manager was driving the van around town running personal errands. They eventually put in the wrong part, which caused more damage, and they wouldn't work with us at all.

That first shop definitely needs a summons for small claims court . They are ALL EXPERTS . The ONLY question is " will it fix the car " ? Charging. $ 1250.00 and it's not fixed . They will waste at least half a day in court and may have to refund most of the money . Step 1 : I will pay you your NET cost on the parts it didn't need and NO labor to settle this . NO ? See you in court !

I thought most of the US States was slowly doing away with auto inspections because its just pointless to do them. The thousands of accidents that happen every year aren't due to vehicle negligence, and as mentioned in the video the owner paid $2500 to have the check engine light never fixed only to find out for free it was the spark plugs. Check engine light comes on if the gas cap is bad there's no way the owner can have the check engine light fixed without going through an entire process of internal engine issues to where its physically impossible to make the perfect engine. I know Mississippi recently did away with their auto inspection requirements.

In Missouri , they done away with inspections for cars newer than 10 years and/or less than 150,000 miles . High mileage cars or anything over 10 yrs old - still have to be inspected . You’d think that makes a little sense , but my experience is ….. my 91 Chevy S-10 runs better with 190,000 miles than many new cars . But …. That’s the way it goes .

They argued with me until I told them I was a truck mechanic in the army for 10 years, then they listened all of a sudden. It’s an incompetent company making lots of money ripping people off who don’t know any better. Sad

Took my car in for bad brakes and was told I needed new rotors and pads.. ok. After they replaced those things and billed me over $500, my car still had bad brakes. They didn't fix the problem, they threw parts at me for the front brakes.. they didn't check the drum brakes for the back tires. One was missing a brake adjuster and they don't make brake adjusters for my car anymore. They did refund my money.

I understand the tests can be stupid, and testers can be corrupt, and all, but I've lived in states with strict testing, loose testing, and no testing, and . . . in states without testing, you see a lot more vehicles on the road that for safety reasons should absolutely not be out in public.
Nebraska was my favorite, just because we never saw so many vehicles driving around without license plates of any kind. It was constant. Not even close to the worst thing about driving in Nebraska, but kind of funny.

Main dealers are the worst in my opinion, back in the 90's I worked at a VW one, things weren't great back then but we did have some old school mechanics who knew what they were doing. God only knows what the current young techs are being taught or not,.... most seem to just be fitters, keep changing parts to fix problems which they can't pinpoint in the first place.
