As a former martial artist, I'm used to mainstream American movies fumbling martial arts fight scenes. I went into Shang Chi hoping for one good fight, maybe at the story's climax. I was pleasantly surprised by the number of high caliber, well-executed fights. They just kept coming. Kudos to the hard work these pros put in to make that happen.
Eastern action meets Western film. Phenomenal!

Yeah they definitely put the work in. One fight that I wish they'd gone a little bit further on was the Wenwu beats up the gang in the supper club but I think the temptation would be to push the limits and you can't really risk going too violent in a PG-13 Marvel flick so I understand

The jacket gag is officially the coolest combat skill in the world, and definitely must be used more often in other action films.

The fact that shangchi is a part of the MCU is awesome. But the Shangchi movie can stand on its own too. Everything was great about it- music, story, character, shots, etc

Mad respect for dedicating an entire episode to the Shang Chi movie and the team behind it! The bus sequence was one of the most refreshing fight scenes since Winter Soldier and the crew did it justice.
Shang-Chi's fight choreography was superb. Especially to MCU standarts. However, I wonder why they didn't make a video for the Black Widow movie yet.

I was kind of reminded of that Shot in the fight on Macau 🇲🇴. Shang chi vs death dealer. Right after he steals xu xaling's necklace.
What I really love is how they took the grace and elegance of movement from movies like Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon then putting actual gravity in it. So it really doesn't feel like they're just floating with wires. You can still feel the weight.
Hey Corridor Crew! I just wanted to say thanks for bringing behind the scenes content back to the people! When dvds first came out, they used to have hours worth of extra content and special features. In the recent years, it’s been slowly going down and is almost nonexistent. These types of videos are great, and hold true to what special features used to be back in the day. I would specifically buy certain versions of movies for more content! Thanks so much for what you all do! It’s very entertaining, and hits me in the nostalgia pretty hard sometimes.

There is this 'Assembled' Series on Disney + since Wanda vision and all marvel projects after that. Every episode is hour plus long and shot like a documentary and full of behind the scenes.

I honestly mostly feel like all of the fight scenes of Shang chi just feels so top notch and like the next level of choreography marvel is aiming for.
I really hope they can keep up the quality. Shang-Chi gave us grounded fights with great shots.

Not being intensely disagreeable but it didn't feel that way to me. Many of the scenes felt like they were brought to the 80 to 90% level and then they just stopped.
I think the previs group maybe making everything Bland. The movie was too dark for some of the action scenes to see what was happening and in other scenes the CGI was too obvious.
Love the actor from Kim's Convenience and like the movie but felt the movie was too dark and a bit lazy. I had no interest in seeing a second time. I have seen most marvel products between two and a half dozen times.

Not in that first scene. I feel like the slow motion the way it was used took away a lot of the impact. This also happened in several other scenes.
Interesting to see Marvel pulling in indie talent. The guy who played the Death Dealer (?) and doubled young Shang Chi (iirc) is also a RUclipsr.
Really? I have been wanting to know more about that guy. He had the right moves and pulled them off. Reminded me a lot of certain styles of Te and Taijutus,
It also kind suck he died so fast lol, the actor is Vietnamese and the Vietnamese Marvel fan community were a bit hype to see him doing cool stuff in the movie.

@@tcof9690 He did a commercial with Jackie. But the first actual theatrical film he was in was called Paper Tigers, and this is his second. He's never been in a Chinese film.

Hearing them talk about their on set collaboration and the value of having fully fledged directors working on specific aspects is so cool. As a music producer, if the clients you’re working with are also producers themselves, it’s a totally different game. Very cool to see such strong parallels in very different fields.
Same goes in my field (software development). When you have clients, or even managers, who understand how coding works, it's so much more fluid than when they don't. Nothing worse than when a client asks, "So can you just [do this thing that requires refactoring the entire application]? I know we didn't put it in the initial request, but it'll be what, one day of extra work?" Or when a project manager asks, "Can you just merge this code in? I know it hasn't been functionally validated, or even peer reviewed, and no one ran unit tests on that branch, but we're on a deadline so merge it, please and thanks."
Rest in peace, Brad Allan. What an incredible man, fighter, choreographer. Good friend and team member of Jackie Chan. He will be deeply missed. Please look for one of the best fight scenes of all time in Gorgeous, a Jackie Chan flick a bit less well known. He and Jackie tear it UP in that. Best wishes everyone

@@bobswag2353 Disney released their earnings report. If it wasn't Shangchi and Black Widow that lost money it was Black Widow and Eternals so I may be wrong but I think it was Shangchi.

@@dbnathan5 dumber, both black widow and shang chi are success unlike ww84 and the suicide squad, which are definitely flops. They couldn't even recover the budget they spend.
I took my nephew to see this, and he (like the little teenage jerk he is 😂) decided to see it with friends opening night, but then still ask me to wait a week to go with him "because I want to see it again with you". So a week later, we went, him having already seen it, and in the first 10 minutes, when we get to the first Li vs Wenwu scene in Ta Lo, I leaned over to him and whispered, ".......I love this movie already." The choreography, man... it is *splendid.* The Ta Lo "fluid airbending" style especially is just *so damned pretty* that I would honestly watch a supercut of this movie with just the fight scenes -- everything else cut out -- and probably still love it. Not as much, because of course the rest of the film was also amazing, but definitely would still love it.
I really enjoyed this episode. Their insights most certainly showed the importance of bridging the gap between stunt performance and film making. You can really see it in the final product. Shang-Chi was amazing! I hope that we can see a future whereby film productions let everyone shine in their own fields. Film lasts forever and I believe that so will its audiences if you allow everyone to do their thing.

This is why a great movie doesn't just show the greatness of the lead director; it highlights it but everyone involved should be attributed by it in some ways. Shang-Chi would be so different and probably not as great if these second unit directors are not involved.
After a ton of episodes, I'm still learning a lot about filmmaking. Great job, Corridor.

@@DathanNaniel Actually, that's exactly what it means. When it comes to art, there's no such thing as "objectively good" or "objectively bad"; if someone likes a piece of art, then that art is good to them. If a lot of people like the art, then it is good to a lot of people.

I have gained so much respect and awe for the Stunt department from these videos. I work as a 2nd AC and I can't weait until the day I'm on a massive budget film with stunt men like this.

The choreography in Shang Chi was so slick and eye-catching. As someone who doesn't typically notice these things, the action scenes in this movie really stood out. It was almost like dancing. The jacket scene, the bus scene, the parents' scene, and the scaffolding scene are all things I will remember for a while 😅. I'm now a massive fan!

You should watch some Jackie movies. They’ve done the jacket, environment, and scaffolding in his movies. And since Brad Allen worked as part of Jackie’s team and on this movie. It would be fun seeing the inspiration.

The choreography in Shang-Chi is so phenomenal I thought I was watching a Jackie Chan recreation, it was so spot on, what an anazing movie

The choreography was one of the worst parts. Extremely lazy, none of the hits connect, and everyone is on strings.

None of the hits connect meaning bad choreography/direction/acting, not that a hit wasn’t GOING to connect. Hits that the movie presents as landing can very clearly be seen not connecting. Guy on the bus gets punched in the head (doesn’t connect) and then randomly jumps out the window.
The guy who did the stunt coordination used to work with Jackie Chan, also involved in the kingsman movies and a bunch more

This episode really tapped on the reason I personally adore this series. I know this is the exact point of the series but showing the amount of effort and time that goes into all these scenes. Showing how much work and passion is required to make someone a reality. It really makes us all appreciate the amazing work.
I love watching their videos where they go over the stunts of MCU movies. However, I wonder why they didn't make a video for the Black Widow movie yet.

HEAT has one of the most iconic shootouts in cinema history.
I was wearing raycon earbuds while watching this and decided to give an actual review. Drawbacks are that the awareness mode doesn't really do anything, they fall out while chewing, and sometimes if my head is tilted too long. But overall they're great their max volume blocks out other noises and can't be heard by people more than three feet from you, they are very durable I've dropped mine multiple times, once into a pan of water and they sound exactly the same, very comfortable, easy to use (most of the time), long battery life, and great audio. One thing you might see a lot of if you look at other reviews is that they "stop working" but this just means they're having pairing issues that can be fixed by turning them off and on, disconnecting and reconnecting, or leaving them in their case for a minute. Overall great earbuds. Also sweat doesn't effect them and they've never fallen out while exercising.

I watched Shang chi yesterday expecting it to be normal fighting but I loved every fight scene and how cool everything looked, one of the best marvel movies in my opinion

@@SuperFlawless2010 Liking other martial arts movies more is fine, but saying that people who enjoyed Shang-Chi have "simple minds" is just being rude for no reason.
I remember saying this after watching Shang-Chi, this was everything Ironfist could have been, it was like a better, longer version of the warehouse fight where Luke Cage and Ironfist team up and we get a taste of Heroes For Hire possibilities. Shang-Chi was like … Black Panther beautiful, so wonderful. Thanks for story boarding, pre-vissing, coordinating, CGI’ing, and more on Shang-Chi, thank you so much, I still get chills on Bus Fight and Dragon Fight.
Massive achievement by these guys, the hard work and passion for sure bled through the screen, great film.
Actors doing the talk show circuit doesn't get me excited for films or anything like that, because they're just doing a contractual obligation and aren't really invested in the interviews. I mean, hell, often most of the interviews are all the same. But this, having some of the talent that worked on the film come on and talk about it? It REALLY makes me want to watch those movies. Their positivity and passion for the project really affects me, gets me to actually want to watch things I'm otherwise not really interested in, and really makes me appreciate the picture a whole lot more. Thanks to Chris and Yung for doing this interview, because now I actually want to watch Shang-Chi. I hope for many more episodes like this.
To be fair, they are just talking stunts. I enjoyed the work put into the movie, but i can't say i really liked the pacing or the narrative all that well. The guys, even stunt directors that you see here, in the end just do a 'their bit' of the story which they get handed, and as good as fight scenes can be, for me at least, having poor character motivations for example kills that joy of watching him/her act in that world.
"We are only as good as they allow us to be..." might be the biggest flex I ever heard that still feels earned.

Loved all of this! But also want to take note of the extras in the bus scene (around 4:50): the guy filming the action with his phone, the bus driver reacting. Nice touch.
I loved how different each fight scene’s choreography felt really from each other but still made sense story wise. And daaaaang the the airbending fights made me so excited for the Avatar live action series fights

As a huge fan of Captain America: Winter Soldier, the fight choreography of this film is definitely in par (maybe even better) than the fight scenes with cap and bucky...
I gotta give it to cap vs bucky, but shang chi is a close second forsure
To me, winter soldier was better because the choreo was less obstructed by CG. There was so much dust and desaturated shots in the final fight.
The cap/bucky fight had better choreography and story, but Shang Chi has the best marvel fight scene cinematography. It's so great to actually be able to see what's going on rather than 20 shots that are 0.5 seconds long stitched together.
@@ashina5924 Personally, not a big fan of shaky camera and quick cuts. Shang chi definitely edged winter soldier for me. Choreography just felt so fluid in this movie.

After the fight between the father in the mother, I thought a live action Avatar the Last Airbender could totally work.

It would be okay, but I don't think it would work much better with Aang's style. What made the animation work is that the air was "colored" to be visible. Here, they're using leaves and you can see that it's not quite as crisp or clear. (It's not bad; it's just less clear than the animated Avatar fights.) Like, take Aang's finishing move on The Drill. You'd need some kind of visible effect to show that shockwave, and it'd need to clearly read as air pressure, not energy. On a constantly vibrating surface like the drill, you wouldn't have enough loose material to visually show what just happened.
It's a challenge. I'm sure some VFX person will figure something out someday, though.
Chris and Yung did an AMAZING job on SHANG-CHI!!! Hope both of them are signed onto SHANG-CHI 2!
I like how the glass breaking is perfectly on beat with the soundtrack at 4:42.

The gun battle from Heat during the bank robbery with Robert De Niro and Val Kilmer is particularly intense. Especially the sound design, and their sense of desperation. It feels realistic.
One of the key elements that made the Heat gunfight so dramatic is that there is NO sound track added. The ONLY sounds you hear are the gunshots and cars. That had never been done before. (Or since, I think...)
Finally! I've been waiting to see them break this down together since I saw Chris's Instagram posts at the premiere. It's so freaking cool that we get to see both a vfx AND stunts breakdown on this movie :D

@@Backroad_Junkie Sometimes I actually prefer going in with lower expectations so I can be pleasantly supprised but not disappointed. Hopefully no way home is just as good. But I guess time will tell.
One thing I found to be really awesome was the use of visual elements to explain what was happening. Instead of someone pointing and shouting. "Hey the bus is gonna split."

The VFX in this movie are some of the best to date in my eyes, I've yet to see it but from what I've seen it's incredible work.

3:34 completely agree with you there Niko, I just think it's a shame he felt like the script/narrative demoted him to a lesser supporting role, like, it's an origin story intended to introduce us to his character,engage us in his journey and showcase everything he is about.... surely I'm not the only one who thought there should have been more focus on him

You should get Martial Club onto the show. They have a martial arts/ stunt choreography channel on RUclips and the channel owner, Andy Le, was Death Dealer in Shang-Chi

One of my all-time favorite shoot out scenes is in the movie True Romance, so many different groups in 1 room all there for different reasons, a lot going on, very chaotic!
The results are always amazing whenever filmmakers allow stuntmen to do what they do best.

Good gunfight films that predate the 2000s: you’ve already featured Hard Boiled but if there are any scenes (maybe the boat/dock shootout?) that you haven’t gone over then it’s worth a look. The Way of The Gun is another absolutely incredible gunfight movie from that era. The car “chase” shootout was cool as well as the end showdown in a Mexican brothel.

Hi, this is my first time commenting on anything on RUclips but I couldn’t resist suggesting a series of films. I have always loved the fighting in Jackie Chan films but i have always thought the action in Jet Li’s old Hong Kong films to be much more interesting.
I highly suggest the drunken final fight in once upon a time in China 3. You’d have to watch the whole film to really understand all the dynamics going on but the choreography is just so crazy.
Another scene would be the fight between Jet Li and Donnie Yen in Once Upon a Time in China 2 where they fight with a bamboo poles and Donnie pulls out a ‘cloth stick’. please check out these films for stunt work if you’ve never experienced these films and consider reacting to them. I’d love to see your reactions. I feel they are under appreciated compared to Jackie Chan’s fights.

When I was watching the Assembled episode aka the behind the scenes of Shang-Chi the moment I saw Chris I got so hyped 1 cause he’s amazing and 2 cause I knew who he was from this show haha!
And now I’m getting the reverse cause I saw Yung in the behind the scenes and now I’m seeing him here!
I was so waiting this reaction/breakdown. I remember an interview that Daniel Cretton did that the movie was influenced by so many Asian movies, the wuxia style in the fight between Shang-Chi's mom and Wenwu, Oldboy and Jackie during the bus, Jackie also during the scaffolding outside the building, Hong Kong crime films that are Tony Leung's bread and butter. It was amazing
The more I learn about the filmmaking process behind Shang-Chi, the more I love this film.

That fight between shang chi's parents is easily top 3 fights in the MCU
So many greats and legends worked on this Brad Allen, Yuen Wah, Michelle Yeoh, Tony Leung, Andy Le, etc. it’s phenomenal! Eastern action meets Western film. Can never go wrong with Eastern action!
Pre-2000 gunfight. The climactic gunfight from the Japanese noir A Colt is My Passport. Amazing energy, movement, and the variety of camera shots that enhance the action. A true classic
As a boy from asia, I watched Jackie chan my whole childhood...... But honestly to me.... Now matter how good the choreography is in this movie, nothing beated Jackie.
Of course, no argument Jackie Chan is a whole other level. But you should take inspiration from the best.
It would be so cool of this channel do the breakdown of the recent no way home trailer and even the scene in the trailer with the two spidermen being hidden.

Now after hearing that Chris worked on this movie… Idk if anyone noticed the one scene in Shang chi where it was shang-chi vs death dealer and when the blade was thrown in the air, it reminded me of when Chris had mentioned before that his favorite fight was between kakashi vs obito from naruto!! I immediately gasped when I first saw that on screen!
